Title

Intending applicants are requested to complete a simple Notification of Intent (NoI) form available from http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkProj.html and return to arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au. This will assist RB and ARI Pty Ltd to coordinate and streamline approaches to developing Linkage Projects and their concomitant agreements. Please note that the internal deadline for submission is 31 Aug 2009.

The Federal Government’s budget announced that up to 50 ARC Super Science 2010 Fellowships are intended to be offered in three areas for early career researchers:

1. Space science and astronomy;
2. Marine and climate science; and
3. Future industries research – biotechnology and nanotechnology.

Whilst there are no firm dates available at present, interested applicants are requested to complete and return a Notification of Intent to Research Branch at arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au by 4 September 2009.Further information on completing a Notification of Intent can be found on the RB webpage at:  http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/supscience.html

The SA Stage Government has given advance notice that Round 7 of the SA Premier’s Science & Research Fund (PSRF) will run this year. The PSRF was established to facilitate investment in key science and research initiatives that have a demonstrable potential to generate significant strategic and sustainable economic, social and/or environmental benefits for the State.

In Round 7, applications addressing SA strategic research areas (refer SASP, STI10, Constellation SA), with a focus on Adaptation to Climate Change will be particularly welcomed.  As in previous years, the PSRF will also consider requests for support for ARC Laureate Fellowship applications.

The PSRF application process involves two stages.

• Stage 1: comprises a 3-page 'Expression of Interest' and these are due by Monday, 31st August 2009 in Research Branch, together with a fully signed internal contribution certification page

• Stage 2: successful Stage 1 applicants will be invited to submit a more detailed Stage 2 application and project case by Friday 3 October 2009.

ARC Future Fellowships for 2010

The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.    

The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:

  • Clinical Research
  • Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
  • Population Health Research
  • Electromagnetic Energy Research
  • Health Services Research 

The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. Applicants should note that NHMRC’s new on-line system will be used.

Once potential applicants receive their ‘login’ they can proceed with filling out their Profile and CV. The Australian Academy of the Humanities is pleased to call for applications to the International Science Linkages (ISL) - Humanities and Creative Arts (ISL-HCA) Programme, funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to support international collaborative research activities in the humanities and creative arts.

The ISL Programme aims to facilitate and support research cooperation between Australian researchers and leading counterparts overseas.

This new ISL Humanities and Creative Arts (ISL-HCA) Programme will provide targeted support in order to:

1. promote access and participation for Australian humanities and creative arts researchers in strategically focused, leading edge, international research; and
2. increase strategic alliances between Australian and overseas researchers.

The G4 Small Grants Program aims to be responsive to community needs and to support youth focussed and driven strategies across a range of areas. The G4 Small Grants Program will support youth focussed initiatives. The priority areas for the G4 Small Grants Program include but are not limited to:

The Ian Potter Foundation now focuses on providing funding for major developments and programs of substantial significance to the University of Adelaide as a whole, rather than individual or team research projects. On your application, you should state why it is a priority for the institution as a whole.

Applications in this round will be accepted for the following program areas:

1. Arts
2. Education
3. Community Wellbeing
4. Community Wellbeing International Travel

Applications for programs which cover more than one area are encouraged. It is NOT necessary for applicants to nominate the area(s) under which they wish their application to be considered. Funding available for small grants: under $20,000 and for general grants: above $20,000.

A small grants program for small rural Australian communities will offer about $850,000 a year in grants to benefit people in rural and remote communities.
Currently, preference will be given to projects that support:

The Native Vegetation Council manages the Native Vegetation Fund and has an annual program of grants to support research activities related to native vegetation conservation. While the Council is willing to consider research proposals that will enhance our knowledge regarding the conservation and management of native vegetation in South Australia, it assesses applications against the following criteria:

  • outcomes that inform and assist in the development of native vegetation policy by the Council 
  • outcomes leading to improved management of native vegetation and/or conservation status of species or communities
  • specific recommendations aimed at improving some aspect of habitat or biodiversity conservation.

Dairy Australia accepts applications for R&D projects and applications are judged on the perceived benefits to the Australian dairy industry and potential for success. Dairy Australia will consider funding applications that address one or more of our Core Objectives (as set out in the Dairy Australia Strategic Plan):

  1. Increase farm productivity.
  2. Maintain and develop high margin markets, channels and products.
  3. Promote and protect the unique benefits of dairy.

Applications for RIRDC funding and scholarships for 2010-11 are now open. The Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation invests in the knowledge needs of our three portfolio areas:

• New rural industries;
• Specific established rural industries; and
• Cross-sectoral national rural issues

RIRDC welcomes proposals that will meet the specific objectives, or a number of objectives, as outlined in the research priorities and in more detail in program Five-Year Plans. RIRDC encourages collaboration with other research providers to build the critical research mass necessary to meet their objectives.

The Institute of Foresters of Australia Inc. (IFA), in conjunction with the Australian Academy of Science have chosen to commemorate the life and work of Dr M.R. Jacobs (25 February 1905 - 9 October 1979) by establishing a fund to support research into the preservation of forestry. The following broad categories of activity may be supported:

1. work to be carried out in or related to Australasia, in any field of forestry science;
2. Field-oriented research in Australia and New Zealand in fields reflecting Max Jacob's particular interests;
3. Overseas travel for either administrators or scientists.

Japan Study Grants are open to postgraduates, honours students, academic staff or independent researchers in Australia who wish to use the Japan-related collections of the National Library for their research. Japan Study Grants are offered for periods of up to four weeks and support travel to Canberra and livings costs.

Applicants must be resident in Australia (Australian citizenship is not mandatory).Grant holders are required to:

1. Take up the Study Grant by 30 September the following year
2 .Spend at least 75% of their time at the Library
3. Write a short report on their research achievement and experience at the Library

The Scleroderma Foundation is seeking applications from promising established investigators both inside and outside the field of systemic sclerosis (SSc) research who wish to propose pilot studies to obtain preliminary data dealing with a highly innovative or highly relevant theme related to SSc. This grant will support pilot research that is likely to lead to more substantial unlimited research project grants from federal or non-federal sources.

Applications may be submitted by non-profit organizations, public and private, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories. Foreign organizations and institutions are eligible. Applicants must have a doctorate degree in Medicine, Osteopathy, Veterinary Medicine, or one of the sciences, must have completed a postdoctoral fellowship, and must have been Principal Investigator on grants from the Scleroderma Foundation or other national, private, or government agencies in the past.

Applicants may request up to US$75,000 per year for up to two years (not to exceed US$150,000). Up to eight percent of the direct costs per year may be set aside as indirect costs. The awards are not renewable.

The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.

BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. In addition, we are especially interested in attracting new investigators to the very interesting field of Barth syndrome research.

The Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and the British Academy provide funding for the support of joint projects between Australian and British scholars in the humanities and social sciences disciplines; projects are expected to be of one year's duration. Funding is not intended to cover major research expenses.

The principal applicant on the Australian side should be normally resident in Australia. Other scholars associated with the project will normally be expected to be of postdoctoral status. The Career Development Program offers the following awards:

1. Scholar: Scholars are highly qualified investigators who have shown a capacity for independent, sustained original investigation in the field of leukaemia,
lymphoma, and myeloma. Awards are for US$110,000 per year for five years.

2. Scholar in Clinical Research: Scholars in Clinical Research who are expected to hold independent faculty-level appointments and who are conducting original, independent applied research, often involving early-stage clinical trials which will advance the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of hematologic malignancies. Awards are for US$110,000 per year for five years.

3. Special Fellow: Special Fellows are researchers who hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree and have completed a minimum of two years of clinical haematology, oncology, haematology/oncology or hematopathology training or postdoctoral research training in a clinical discipline. Awards are for US$65,000 per year for three years.

4. Fellow: Fellows are promising investigators with less than two years of postdoctoral research training. Awards are for US$55,000 per year for three years.

The Society welcomes applications from qualified investigators outside the USA; Applicants should hold a PhD, MD, DVM or equivalent degree.

The Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer Research Institute, formerly the Cancer Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, answers the need for more researchers in the field of cancer immunology. It supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology.

The fellowship provides stipends of $45,000 for the first year, $47,000 for the second year and $49,000 for the third year. In addition, an allowance of $1,500 per year is allotted to the host institution for use at sponsor's discretion to help pay for the fellow's research supplies, travel to scientific meetings or health insurance.

The Group of Eight offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000. The Fellowships are open to eligible researchers in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.

The Go8 European Fellowship scheme recognises the importance of international contacts for early career researchers. It is envisaged that Fellows will continue to collaborate with Australian research partners when they return to their home institutions.

The 2009 Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History will be awarded to an individual or a group, for an outstanding publication or body of work that contributes significantly to an understanding of Australian history. The Prize comprises an embossed gold medallion and a tax free grant of $100,000.

The Board of the Ludvig Holberg Memorial Funding is now calling for nominations for the Holberg International Memorial Prize 2010 for outstanding
scholarly work in the fields of the arts and humanities, social science, law and theology. The prize has a value of NOK 4.5 million (appr. EURO 500,000).

| In June 2009 SRDC announced it will support funding in 2010 for three postgraduate scholarships which foster training in technical and social disciplines relevant to SRDC's SRDC R&D Plan 2007-2012">Research Priorities.

Scholarships provide $26,000 stipend and $6,000 towards operating costs or fees per year for up to three years of full time study, and $1,000 for thesis publication costs.

This program was established to assist promising and highly qualified young foreign researchers wishing to conduct research in Japan. It is aimed at providing opportunities for such researchers to, under the guidance of their hosts, conduct cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions, thereby permitting them to advance their own research while stimulating Japanese academic circles, particularly young Japanese researchers, through close collaboration in scientific activities. Such collaboration is also intended to advance scientific research in the counterpart countries. (Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 to 24 months.)

4. Public policy
5. Building a network

Psychology Beyond Borders seeks research and action-oriented projects that contribute to at least two of the five key areas of PBB's mission.
