Researchers and school coordinators are reminded that DEEWR (formerly DEST) HERDC publications are due in Research Branch by the end of March. We expect to receive and check over 2500 papers before the June deadline. Many thanks to those coordinators who have begun to submit papers on a progressive basis.

Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) - Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP)
Internal Due Dates

The Access to Major Research Facilities Program (AMRFP) supports access by Australian researchers from industry, private and public research organisations and universities to major international research facilities that are not available in Australia or to attend overseas strategic planning meetings to secure access to a major research facility.

This program primarily supports travel where time has been granted on an overseas major facility following peer review. Collaboration visits will not be supported unless time has already been granted at an eligible facility. Two six-month funding rounds are held each year.

NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program
Internal Due Dates

The Co-operative Development Grants Program provides funding for research projects, education and feasibility studies that assist the NSW co-operative sector to grow and remain a viable sector of our economy. Funding is generally provided over a 12 month period, depending on the project. Applications for grants can be made at any time. $100,000 per annum is currently available under this program.

Australian Rotary Health/Bipolar Expedition - Bi-Polar Disorder in Australia (1 Year Research Project)
Internal Due Dates

The Bipolar Expedition is an initiative developed within the Australian branch of the successful Brightest Young Minds Foundation, an organisation which provides a platform for Australian adults to launch ventures to address pressing social issues. In Nov 2009 an expedition will embark on a three-week trek to the South Pole and in April 2010 a similar trek to the North Pole. This initiative began to discover better ways to manage and diagnose Bipolar Disorder. Australian Rotary Health is partnering The Bipolar Expedition to advertise, assess and distribute funds raised. Researchers Australia-Wide are encouraged to apply.

The Australian Rotary Health/Bipolar Expedition Research Project is valued at $55,000.00 + GST for 1 year.

The Australian Society for Medical Research - Research Awards
Internal Due Dates

ASMR offers two Research Awards annually. These awards support a postgraduate student member of the ASMR nearing completion of their studies or a recently graduated ( 2 years maximum) postdoctoral member to undertake a short period of research in a laboratory outside of Australia ($5,000) or in a distal laboratory ($2,000) within Australia. The award specifically excludes support for conference attendance and travel for an extended period of postdoctoral studies. Applicants for these awards must have been members of the ASMR for at least 12 months immediately preceding the year in which the Award application is to be considered.

NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) - Call for Applications
Internal Due Dates


The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.    

The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:

  • Clinical Research
  • Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
  • Population Health Research
  • Electromagnetic Energy Research
  • Health Services Research 

The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. Applicants should note that NHMRC’s new on-line system will be used.

Once potential applicants receive their ‘login’ they can proceed with filling out their Profile and CV. Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation - Research Grants
Internal Due Dates

The mission of the Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation (APERF) is to support and facilitate research into foot and related problems. As such, the Foundation offers financial support for projects that are focussed on the causes, assessment, diagnosis, management and outcomes of foot and related problems. Further to this, the Foundation supports research into professional issues associated with podiatry and the provision of quality podiatric care.

The APERF Grant is open to all people involved in foot and related research. However, weighting will be given to applications whose team includes podiatric representation, particularly as the primary applicant.

Grants between $2,000 and $4,000 for novice researchers and $2,000 and $8,000 for experienced researchers will be available for projects.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - Young Investigator Award Program
Internal Due Dates

The program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities and supports basic and/or clinical investigators, however, research must be relevant to our understanding, treatment and prevention of serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Awards are up to $30,000/year, for one or two years (maximum of $60,000) and this award supports scientists at the advanced post-doctoral or assistant professor (or equivalent) level.

The 2010 Young Investigator Awards application submission has been rescheduled to Nov.

Leukaemia Foundation National Research Program - Call for applications 2010
Internal Due Dates

In 2010, the Leukaemia Foundation is calling for innovative research applications for Grants-in-Aid, Fellowships and Scholarships. The Foundation is delighted to call for applications for 2010 for innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma and related disorders, and the care of patients and families. The following grants are available:

1. PhD Scholarships ($40,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done.  Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD.  Successful applicants who have already commenced their PhD program will only be awarded a Leukaemia Foundation Scholarship for the balance of their study. The internal deadline is 18 Sept 2009.

2. PhD Scholarships (Clinical) ($55,000/year for max 3 years): Candidates will be eligible for enrolment in the PhD program in the institution in which the proposed study will be done.  Scholarships are open to students commencing their PhD or who have completed no more than one year of full-time study toward their PhD. The internal deadline is 18 Sept 2009.

The Australian Academy of the Humanities: International Science Linkages (Humanities & Creative Arts Programme)

The Australian Academy of the Humanities is pleased to call for applications to the International Science Linkages (ISL) - Humanities and Creative Arts (ISL-HCA) Programme, funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to support international collaborative research activities in the humanities and creative arts.

The ISL Programme aims to facilitate and support research cooperation between Australian researchers and leading counterparts overseas.

This new ISL Humanities and Creative Arts (ISL-HCA) Programme will provide targeted support in order to:

Ian Potter Foundation: Project Grants
Internal Due Dates

The Ian Potter Foundation now focuses on providing funding for major developments and programs of substantial significance to the University of Adelaide as a whole, rather than individual or team research projects. On your application, you should state why it is a priority for the institution as a whole.

Applications in this round will be accepted for the following program areas:

The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney - 2010 Research Grants

Myer Foundation - Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program
Internal Due Dates

The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:

  • Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated
  • rural and remote areas of Australia
  • Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed
  • Small, discreet projects that meet the needs of a community rather than supplementary funding for large projects. A small, discreet project will be considered to have a total budget of up to $50,000.
Grants are capped at $10,000, and are made for a one-year period only. The requested amount may be part of a budget of up to $50,000. Only one application can be considered per applicant. This includes applications submitted to another funding area of The Myer Foundation or the Sidney Myer Fund. Exceptions are made when multiple applications are received from universities and other large organisations where they represent different faculties, departments or schools, and the proposals are unrelated.

Institute of Foresters of Australia: Maxwell Ralph Jacobs Grants
Internal Due Dates

The Institute of Foresters of Australia Inc. (IFA), in conjunction with the Australian Academy of Science have chosen to commemorate the life and work of Dr M.R. Jacobs (25 February 1905 - 9 October 1979) by establishing a fund to support research into the preservation of forestry. The following broad categories of activity may be supported:

1. work to be carried out in or related to Australasia, in any field of forestry science;
2. Field-oriented research in Australia and New Zealand in fields reflecting Max Jacob's particular interests;
3. Overseas travel for either administrators or scientists.

Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation - Invitation to Apply for Funding 2010-2011 (Preliminary Research Proposals)

The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering Inc (AINSE) - Research Awards

The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE) makes awards in support of projects undertaken by its member universities which have an identifiable focus on nuclear and nuclear-related applications and/or on the use of Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) facilities and expertise.

Awards are awarded for one year commencing in January. The Awards

  • cover the costs associated with the use of the AINSE listed facilities
  • contribute to the cost of travel and/or accommodation when the university researcher lives in a city different from that in which the facility is located
  • contribute toward the cost of equipment and/or materials

Norman Wettenhall Foundation - Foundation Grants

The objectives of the Foundation are:

  • to build capacity in local communities to effect long-term beneficial change in the natural environment
  • to support and encourage research, monitoring and knowledge sharing relating to all aspects of Australia's natural environment

Applicants from academic institutions seeking funding should include a curriculum vitae and a recommendation from their Supervisor or Head of Department. Grants should not exceed $5,000.  Research needs to be part of a wider, collaborative project and show how it will directly benefit the natural living environment.

Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research - Project Development
Internal Due Dates

ACIAR is part of Australia's international development cooperation program and works toward advancing Australia's national interest by assisting developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. It does this by encouraging Australian agricultural scientists to use their skills for the benefit of developing countries through international agricultural research and development partnerships.

ACIAR welcomes ideas for new projects at any time. Initial project ideas should be addressed to the appropriate ACIAR Research Program Manager (RPM). ACIAR's principal goals are to reduce food insecurity, improve livelihoods, and care for the natural resource base for agriculture. Small Grants up to $150,000;Medium Grants $150,000 to $400,000; Large Grants $400,000. See Guidelines for definition of these.

National Library of Australia: Japan Study Grants)
Internal Due Dates


Japan Study Grants are open to postgraduates, honours students, academic staff or independent researchers in Australia who wish to use the Japan-related collections of the National Library for their research. Japan Study Grants are offered for periods of up to four weeks and support travel to Canberra and livings costs.

Applicants must be resident in Australia (Australian citizenship is not mandatory).Grant holders are required to:

1. Take up the Study Grant by 30 September the following year
2 .Spend at least 75% of their time at the Library
3. Write a short report on their research achievement and experience at the Library

Association for Research between Italy and Australasia (ARIA) - Australian Travel Award for L’Aquila researchers
Internal Due Dates

Do you have colleagues in L’Aquila, Italy who want to study at the University of Adelaide?

A Travel award is administrated by ARIA-Canberra (Association for Research between Italy and Australasia, Canberra) to provide support for the scholars affected by the L’Aquila earthquake by offering a possibility to continue their research in an Australian Institution. Each of the 10 Awards will provide AU$5,000 towards the visit of a researcher from L’Aquila to an Australian institution. At least eight of the ten Travel Awards will be granted for visits to the Group of 8 Universities

The sponsored research visits will have to be carried out by 31 December 2010 and should have a minimum duration of 8 weeks. Applications close on 30 Sept 2009. Notification to the successful applicants by early Nov 2009.

The Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) - Research Projects (Request for Proposals)

The Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) is an international non-profit organization, based in Muscat, Oman. The purpose of the Center’s research program is to conduct, support and coordinate basic and applied R&D in water desalination and supporting fields, with the overall objective to reduce the cost of desalination.

The RFP addresses all individuals, institutions and companies, worldwide, engaged in the different fields of desalination practice, in desalination R&D, in academic teaching or in practical training. The Center budget for this RFP is in the order of US$ 500,000.

The Scleroderma Foundation: New Investigator Grant
Internal Due Dates

The Scleroderma Foundation is seeking applications from promising established investigators both inside and outside the field of systemic sclerosis (SSc) research who wish to propose pilot studies to obtain preliminary data dealing with a highly innovative or highly relevant theme related to SSc. This grant will support pilot research that is likely to lead to more substantial unlimited research project grants from federal or non-federal sources.

Applications may be submitted by non-profit organizations, public and private, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories. Foreign organizations and institutions are eligible. Applicants must have a doctorate degree in Medicine, Osteopathy, Veterinary Medicine, or one of the sciences, must have completed a postdoctoral fellowship, and must have been Principal Investigator on grants from the Scleroderma Foundation or other national, private, or government agencies in the past.

Applicants may request up to US$75,000 per year for up to two years (not to exceed US$150,000). Up to eight percent of the direct costs per year may be set aside as indirect costs. The awards are not renewable.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) - Rapid Response Innovation Awards
Internal Due Dates

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) announces the launch of the Rapid Response Innovation Awards, a one-of-a-kind rolling application program to support novel Parkinson's disease related research in real-time. The goal of this exciting new program is to rapidly support innovative research focused on the cause of and cure for Parkinson's disease (PD).

MJFF is eager to fund high-risk, high-reward projects tackling critical scientific roadblocks that if successful, can open new avenues for PD
therapy development. With the understanding that submission and review of innovative, high-risk, high-reward proposals should not be limited to one deadline each year, the Rapid Response Innovation Awards will operate on a rolling basis. Research proposals may be submitted at any time during the year and funding decisions will be made within six weeks of receiving the application. Rapid Response Innovation Awards are designed to support projects with little to no existing preliminary data, but that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding or treatment of Parkinson's disease. Program Highlights:

1. No submission deadline
2. Funding decisions made within six weeks of submission date
3. Postdoctoral fellows are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators.

US Department of Defense - Bone Marrow Failure Research Funding Opportunities (Pre - Applications)
Internal Due Dates

Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) congressional appropriations have provided $5 million to the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Bone Marrow Failure Research Program (BMFRP).  The program will support innovative research focused Bone Marrow Failure (BMF). 

The FY09 BMFRP is pleased to announce the release of the second and third of three award mechanisms, the Idea Awards and the Synergistic Idea Awards. 

1. Idea Awards: support innovative ideas and high-impact approaches to bone marrow failure research to move toward the BMFRP vision of understanding and curing bone marrow failure disease. This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas, not ideas that are extensions of existing work. Proposals should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation. Maximum period of performance is 3 years.  Maximum allowable funding is $375,000 in direct costs for the entire period of performance or a lesser period of performance, plus indirect costs in accordance with the institution’s negotiated rate agreement. 

2. Synergistic Idea Awards: support innovative ideas and synergistic approaches to bone marrow failure research through scientific collaborative partnerships. This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas, not ideas that are extensions of existing collaborative efforts. Collaborative partnerships must involve two Principle Investigators (PIs) who will use synergistic and complementary perspectives to address a central problem or question in bone marrow failure research.  Proposals should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation. Applications must clearly identify the synergy that will enable or greatly accelerate the evaluation of a single innovative hypothesis.  Maximum period of performance is 3 years.  Combined total maximum allowable funding is $750,000 in direct costs for the entire period of performance, plus indirect costs in accordance with the institution’s negotiated rate agreement.

The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $35 million to the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

1. Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award:
The SCIRP Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) supports the initial exploration of innovative, untested, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the SCI research field. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or they should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. This award is designed to provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. Some gaps in supporting rationale may exist due to a lack of available information. The Broad Foundation - Medical Research Program (BMRP) for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Internal Due Dates


Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.

Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Research using non-human material should lead to translational benefits to patients with IBD.

Funding may be requested for up to two years. Second-year funding will be based on an evaluation of the progress and the perceived value of the findings from the first year of funding. There are no deadlines or specific dates by which to request funding. Proposals are accepted and reviewed year–round, and the BMRP makes every effort to provide rapid response and funding.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Research Grants Opportunities

AFSP offers six types of research grants:

1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.

2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.

3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.

4. Standard Research Grants: for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.

5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.

6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants
Internal Due Dates

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.

The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.

Hereditary Disease Foundation - Research Grants

The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. The Thrasher Research Fund - Early Career Award (Paediatrics)

Centre for International Mobility (CIMO) - Fellowships Programme
