Title

The NHMRC has undertaken a review of the NHMRC-European Union (EU) Collaborative Research Grants scheme.  The scheme helps Australian researchers participate in projects with international researchers under the European Commission’s (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).  

The revised NHMRC-EU scheme Funding Policy, approved by Research Committee in May this year, and the revised Application Form, are now available on the updated webpage of the NHMRC website located at: http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/types/granttype/strategic/austeu.htm.

The National Centre for Biosecurity invites proposals for presentations addressing the theme ‘Global Health Security’ in one or more of the following areas:

- Responding to infectious disease crises in Australia and the Asia-Pacific
- The epidemiology of public health and animal health emergencies
- The development and use of biological weapons by state and non-state actors
- Ethical dilemmas and security risks of research on pathogenic micro-organisms
- International law and domestic regulation
- Relevance and applications of new technologies to biosecurity challenges
- Ethical, social and cultural dimensions of biosecurity

The Federal Government’s budget announced that up to 50 ARC Super Science 2010 Fellowships are intended to be offered in three areas for early career researchers:

1. Space science and astronomy;
2. Marine and climate science; and
3. Future industries research – biotechnology and nanotechnology.

The Heart Foundation will be holding a research funding information session in Adelaide (venue and date TBC).  Find out how you can obtain funding for your research from the Heart Foundation with details on their awards, the assessment criteria and how they assess applications. They will also provide tips on what to do to give yourself and your team the best chance of putting in a successful application.

The Australian Stem Cell Centre invites applications from commercial companies or academic researchers seeking financial support to apply for the ASCC Strategic Development Fund. The fund is designed to develop and accelerate projects in stem cell research towards a well-defined commercial, medical or academic goal. 

Australian for-profit and not-for-profit organisations; public or private institutions, with appropriate facilities. The proposed project may be carried out in collaboration with research already funded in the ASCC’s Collaborative Streams provided there is no overlap or duplication with currently funded scientific aims. The ASCC is providing a total of $1 million in grants with each grant up to a maximum of $250,000. Funding will commence no later than 1 December 2009.

The NHMRC have recently introduced the Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) Scheme which replaces the Centres for Clinical Research Excellence Scheme and the Capacity Building Grants in Population Health and Health Services Research.    

The CRE Scheme seeks applications from teams of researchers to pursue innovative, high quality collaborative research activities in the following priority areas:

  • Clinical Research
  • Research into Asbestos Related Diseases
  • Population Health Research
  • Electromagnetic Energy Research
  • Health Services Research 

The CRE will build capacity, support research that will lead to improved community health outcomes, and ensure effective translation of research outcomes primarily into practice. Funding will be awarded for a period of five years and is expected to commence in 2010. Applications opened on 10 July 2009. The Australian Academy of the Humanities is pleased to call for applications to the International Science Linkages (ISL) - Humanities and Creative Arts (ISL-HCA) Programme, funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to support international collaborative research activities in the humanities and creative arts.

The ISL Programme aims to facilitate and support research cooperation between Australian researchers and leading counterparts overseas.

On your application, you should state why it is a priority for the institution as a whole.

The aim of the small grants program is to provide financial assistance to organisations planning projects that meet the Foundation's objects. The program is designed to provide fast trunaround time and quick outcomes.

Small grants can be applied for at any time, and decision making takes approximately eight weeks.No organisation is excluded from applying for a small grant. Preference will, however, be given to applications initiated at the community level or with substantial community input. We welcome joint applications from more than one organisation, although the application needs to be auspiced by a single incorporated organisation.

Dairy Australia accepts applications for R&D projects and applications are judged on the perceived benefits to the Australian dairy industry and potential for success. Dairy Australia will consider funding applications that address one or more of our Core Objectives (as set out in the Dairy Australia Strategic Plan):

  2. Maintain and develop high margin markets, channels and products.
  3. Promote and protect the unique benefits of dairy.

The Flagship clusters fund a large scale of activity with an emphasis on people and partnerships working on a collection of projects relevant to a Flagship's goals. The Flagship clusters foster collaboration between CSIRO, universities and other publicly-funded research agencies.

Flagship clusters will be funded for about three years at approximately A$1million per annum from the Flagship Collaboration Fund. Co-investment from partner organisations is expected, at least matching the contribution from the Flagship Collaboration Fund.

To apply for beamtime at the Australian synchrotron, applications can be submitted via an online proposal system.

Proposals are peer reviewed for scientific merit by a specialist committee. The technical feasibility of the proposal is also reviewed.  Proposals are then allocated time based on these reviews by the Proposal Allocation Committee (PAC) for each beamline. The International Seminar Support Scheme (ISSS) is an Australian Government small grants scheme administered by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). ISSS supports attendance at international development-oriented seminars in Australia and overseas. ISSS is a discretionary scheme. Funds are limited and competition for them is very strong. AusAID will give priority to seminars that focus on:

1. poverty reduction including, employment generation;
2. good governance, human rights and participatory development;
3. private sector development;
4. sustainable improvement of production and productivity in agriculture and other sectors, including technology transfer;
5. economic policy reform, including trade and income-related issues;
6. health and population, particularly primary health and child and maternal health;
7. education, including adult literacy and distance education;
8. urbanisation and infrastructure development;
9. environment and development; and/or
10. peace, conflict and development.

The program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, or subfield. The Foundation particularly welcomes proposals that employ a comparative perspective, can generate innovative approaches or ideas, and/or integrate two or more subfields.

Dissertation Fieldwork Grants provide a maximum of US $15,000 and the Osmundsen Initiative supplement provides up to an additional $5,000 for a maximum grant of US $20,000. The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.

BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. In addition, we are especially interested in attracting new investigators to the very interesting field of Barth syndrome research.

Through a generous gift the Rockefeller Archive Center has available funds to support short-term research in the Paul Ehrlich Collection at the Archive Center. The Career Development Program offers the following awards:

1. Scholar: Scholars are highly qualified investigators who have shown a capacity for independent, sustained original investigation in the field of leukaemia,
lymphoma, and myeloma. Awards are for US$110,000 per year for five years.

2. Scholar in Clinical Research: Scholars in Clinical Research who are expected to hold independent faculty-level appointments and who are conducting original, independent applied research, often involving early-stage clinical trials which will advance the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of hematologic malignancies. Awards are for US$110,000 per year for five years.

3. Special Fellow: Special Fellows are researchers who hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree and have completed a minimum of two years of clinical haematology, oncology, haematology/oncology or hematopathology training or postdoctoral research training in a clinical discipline. Awards are for US$65,000 per year for three years.

4. Fellow: Fellows are promising investigators with less than two years of postdoctoral research training. Awards are for US$55,000 per year for three years.

The Irvington Institute Fellowship Program of the Cancer Research Institute, formerly the Cancer Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, answers the need for more researchers in the field of cancer immunology. It supports qualified young scientists at leading universities and research centers around the world who wish to receive training in cancer immunology or general immunology.

The fellowship provides stipends of $45,000 for the first year, $47,000 for the second year and $49,000 for the third year. In addition, an allowance of $1,500 per year is allotted to the host institution for use at sponsor's discretion to help pay for the fellow's research supplies, travel to scientific meetings or health insurance.

The Group of Eight offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000. The Fellowships are open to eligible researchers in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.

The Go8 European Fellowship scheme recognises the importance of international contacts for early career researchers. It is envisaged that Fellows will continue to collaborate with Australian research partners when they return to their home institutions.
