The mission of the Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation (APERF) is to support and facilitate research into foot and related problems. As such, the Foundation offers financial support for projects that are focussed on the causes, assessment, diagnosis, management and outcomes of foot and related problems. Further to this, the Foundation supports research into professional issues associated with podiatry and the provision of quality podiatric care.

The APERF Grant is open to all people involved in foot and related research. However, weighting will be given to applications whose team includes podiatric representation, particularly as the primary applicant.

Grants between $2,000 and $4,000 for novice researchers and $2,000 and $8,000 for experienced researchers will be available for projects.

NARSAD's Young Investigator Award Program provides support for the most promising young scientists conducting neurobiological research. One and two year awards up to $30,000 per year are provided to enable promising investigators to either extend research fellowship training or begin careers as independent research faculty. Basic and/or clinical investigators are supported, but research must be relevant to serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.

The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:

• Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated

• Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) announces the launch of the Rapid Response Innovation Awards, a one-of-a-kind rolling application program to support novel Parkinson's disease related research in real-time. The goal of this exciting new program is to rapidly support innovative research focused on the cause of and cure for Parkinson's disease (PD).

MJFF is eager to fund high-risk, high-reward projects tackling critical scientific roadblocks that if successful, can open new avenues for PD
therapy development. With the understanding that submission and review of innovative, high-risk, high-reward proposals should not be limited to one deadline each year, the Rapid Response Innovation Awards will operate on a rolling basis. Research proposals may be submitted at any time during the year and funding decisions will be made within six weeks of receiving the application. The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $35 million to the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award: The SCIRP Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) supports the initial exploration of innovative, untested, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the SCI research field. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or they should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.

Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.

Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Research using non-human material should lead to translational benefits to patients with IBD.

Funding may be requested for up to two years. Second-year funding will be based on an evaluation of the progress and the perceived value of the findings from the first year of funding. AFSP offers six types of research grants:

1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.

5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.

6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. Support will be for research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease. Areas of interest include trinucleotide expansions, animal models, gene therapy, neurobiology and development of the basal ganglia, cell survival and death, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons.

The Thrasher Research Fund is pleased to announce the fourth year of its Early Career Award Program in for 2009. The Fund will continue to make 30 awards in 2009,expanded from 21 awards in 2006-2007. The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund (the Fund) was established in 2003 as part of an historic agreement for Australia to supply LNG to China. The fund supports activities aimed at establishing genuine, long-term partnerships within the energy sector that create positive economic and environmental outcomes, increase knowledge and skills, particularly in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, and enhance the relationship between Australia and China.

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund provides opportunities for training, scholarships, research and technology transfer between China and Australia in the natural gas and LNG industry. The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund provides opportunities for training, scholarships, research and technology transfer between China and Australia in the natural gas and LNG industry. It has a focus on increasing knowledge about the natural gas production-to-consumption chain including liquefaction, transport, re-gasification, distribution, engineering and procurement.

The fund also fosters the development of long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships across the energy sector between Australia and China. Funding is available both for Research and Post Graduate Top-Up Scholarships.

Humboldt Research Fellowships for experienced researchers are the instrument with which the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars from abroad, who completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago1 to spend extended periods of research (6-18 months; may be divided up into a maximum of three blocks) in Germany.

The value of the fellowship is worth 2,450 EUR per month.

The Group of Eight offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000. The Fellowships are open to eligible researchers in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia.

The Go8 European Fellowship scheme recognises the importance of international contacts for early career researchers. It is envisaged that Fellows will continue to collaborate with Australian research partners when they return to their home institutions.

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.

The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 800-1200 euros (in 2009). The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by CIMO.
