The aim of the small grants program is to provide financial assistance to organisations planning projects that meet the Foundation's objects. The program is designed to provide fast trunaround time and quick outcomes.
Small grants can be applied for at any time, and decision making takes approximately eight weeks.No organisation is excluded from applying for a small grant. Preference will, however, be given to applications initiated at the community level or with substantial community input. Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation - Research Grants |

The mission of the Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation (APERF) is to support and facilitate research into foot and related problems. As such, the Foundation offers financial support for projects that are focussed on the causes, assessment, diagnosis, management and outcomes of foot and related problems. Further to this, the Foundation supports research into professional issues associated with podiatry and the provision of quality podiatric care.
The APERF Grant is open to all people involved in foot and related research. However, weighting will be given to applications whose team includes podiatric representation, particularly as the primary applicant.
Grants between $2,000 and $4,000 for novice researchers and $2,000 and $8,000 for experienced researchers will be available for projects.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) - Young Investigator Award Program |

NARSAD's Young Investigator Award Program provides support for the most promising young scientists conducting neurobiological research. One and two year awards up to $30,000 per year are provided to enable promising investigators to either extend research fellowship training or begin careers as independent research faculty. Basic and/or clinical investigators are supported, but research must be relevant to serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.

Myer Foundation: Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program | Internal Due Dates |

The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:
- Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated
- rural and remote areas of Australia
- Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed
- Small, discreet projects that meet the needs of a community rather than supplementary funding for large projects. A small, discreet project will be considered to have a total budget of up to $50,000.
Grants are capped at $10,000, and are made for a one-year period only. The requested amount may be part of a budget of up to $50,000. Only one application can be considered per applicant. This includes applications submitted to another funding area of The Myer Foundation or the Sidney Myer Fund. Exceptions are made when multiple applications are received from universities and other large organisations where they represent different faculties, departments or schools, and the proposals are unrelated.

A Travel award is administrated by ARIA-Canberra (Association for Research between Italy and Australasia, Canberra) to provide support for the scholars affected by the L’Aquila earthquake by offering a possibility to continue their research in an Australian Institution. Each of the 10 Awards will provide AU$5,000 towards the visit of a researcher from L’Aquila to an Australian institution. At least eight of the ten Travel Awards will be granted for visits to the Group of 8 Universities

Postdoctoral Fellowships provide up to $180,000 over 3 years to expand the skills and expertise of breast cancer researchers and position trainees for independent careers in breast cancer research. The program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. support novel Parkinson's disease related research in real-time. The goal of this exciting new program is to rapidly support innovative research focused on the cause of and cure for
Parkinson's disease (PD).
MJFF is eager to fund high-risk, high-reward projects tackling critical scientific roadblocks that if successful, can open new avenues for PD
therapy development. With the understanding that submission and review of innovative, high-risk, high-reward proposals should not be limited to one deadline each year, the Rapid

The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $35 million to the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program (SCIRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
1. Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award: The SCIRP Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award (EHDA) supports the initial exploration of innovative, untested, high-risk, high-gain, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the SCI research field. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based, or they should provide initial principles of an innovative hypothesis. This award is designed to provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. Some gaps in supporting rationale may exist due to a lack of available information. Internal deadline is 23 Oct 2009.

The Barth Syndrome Foundation (BSF) provides funding for research on the natural history, biochemical basis, gene product function and treatment of Barth syndrome. Value of the fund is up to $40,000 for two years.
BSF is most interested in providing “seed money” to be used by experienced investigators for the testing of initial hypotheses and collection of preliminary data leading to successful long-term funding by NIH and other major granting institutions. The Broad Foundation - Medical Research Program (BMRP) for Inflammatory Bowel Disease |

Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.
Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Research using non-human material should lead to translational benefits to patients with IBD.
Funding may be requested for up to two years. Second-year funding will be based on an evaluation of the progress and the perceived value of the findings from the first year of funding. There are no deadlines or specific dates by which to request funding. Proposals are accepted and reviewed year–round, and the BMRP makes every effort to provide rapid response and funding.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Research Grants Opportunities |

AFSP offers six types of research grants:
1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.
2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.
4. Standard Research Grants: for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.
5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.
6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The Wenner - Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants |

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.
Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.
The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.
Internal deadline for Round 2 is 24 Nov 2009 for projects starting in July through December of the following year.

Hereditary Disease Foundation - Research Grants |

The focus of the Hereditary Disease Foundation is on Huntington's disease. Support will be for research projects that will contribute to identifying and understanding the basic defect in Huntington's disease. Areas of interest include trinucleotide expansions, animal models, gene therapy, neurobiology and development of the basal ganglia, cell survival and death, and intercellular signaling in striatal neurons.
The maximum award for research grants is $50,000.

The Thrasher Research Fund - Early Career Award (Paediatrics) |

The Thrasher Research Fund is pleased to announce the fourth year of its Early Career Award Program in for 2009. The Fund will continue to make 30 awards in 2009,expanded from 21 awards in 2006-2007. There are three funding cycles per year for New Researcher Award Program grants. Up to ten grants per cycle will be made in 2009.
The Fund is open to a variety of research topics important to children’s health. The Fund’s current focus is on clinical/translational pediatric research. Emphasis is placed on projects with the potential for findings that could be clinically applicable in a relatively short period of time for the prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment of pediatric medical problems.

The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF): Asian Waterbird Conservation Fund |

The objectives of the fund is to support projects that will lead to the conservation of migratory waterbirds and their important wetland habitats in Asia through partnership with, and which will bring socio-economic benefits to the local community at the site.
Cathay Pacific placed an initial donation of HK$500,000 (approx. US$65,000) into the Fund and further donations are actively being sought from other sources to increase the amount in the Fund so that a greater number of worthwhile projects can be supported in future. At present, the maximum amount that can be applied for each project shall not exceed US$4,000.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now accepting grant proposals for Round 4 of Grand Challenges Explorations, a US$100 million initiative to encourage unconventional global health solutions. Anyone can apply, regardless of education or experience level.
Topics for Round 4 are:

● create new ways to induce and measure mucosal immunity
● create low-cost diagnostics for priority global health conditions
● create new ways to protect against infectious disease

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program, an initiative of the National Geographic Society and the Waitt Institute for Discovery, helps qualified and experienced individuals launch the most difficult stage of a project for which to secure funding—the search. Grants are made for exploratory fieldwork that holds promise for new breakthroughs in the natural and social sciences. NGS/Waitt Grants applications are processed throughout the year and grants are awarded expeditiously to help researchers take advantage of immediate opportunities.
Funded through a five-year grant from the Waitt Family Foundation, the NGS/Waitt Grants Program is administered by National Geographic Mission Programs and makes approximately one hundred grants annually of $5,000 to $15,000. Australian participation in the European Commission 2009: International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) |

The Australian Academy of Science receives funding from the Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) to support Australian research organisations participating in the International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES). The project is supported by the International Science Linkages (ISL) program. The ISL program supports professional Australian researchers, from both the public and private sectors, to collaborate with international partners on leading edge science and technology in order to contribute to Australia's economic, social and environmental wellbeing.
Only Australian organisations that are partners of a European-led consortium that has already been selected in 2009 to receive funding from the European Commission’s IRSES program are eligible to apply. DIISR has provided funding totalling $200,000 towards Australian participation in IRSES. Australian organisations may receive a grant-in-aid of a maximum of $50,000 as a contribution towards travel and subsistence costs.

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund |

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund (the Fund) was established in 2003 as part of an historic agreement for Australia to supply LNG to China. The fund supports activities aimed at establishing genuine, long-term partnerships within the energy sector that create positive economic and environmental outcomes, increase knowledge and skills, particularly in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, and enhance the relationship between Australia and China.
The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund provides opportunities for training, scholarships, research and technology transfer between China and Australia in the natural gas and LNG industry. It has a focus on increasing knowledge about the natural gas production-to-consumption chain including liquefaction, transport, re-gasification, distribution, engineering and procurement.
The fund also fosters the development of long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships across the energy sector between Australia and China. Funding is available both for Research and Post Graduate Top-Up Scholarships.

The Group of Eight offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. Each Fellowship is worth AUD 20,000.

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.
