Law and Justice Foundation of New South Wales: Small Grants
Internal Due Date

The aim of the small grants program is to provide financial assistance to organisations planning projects that meet the Foundation's objects. The program is designed to provide fast trunaround time and quick outcomes.

Small grants can be applied for at any time, and decision making takes approximately eight weeks.No organisation is excluded from applying for a small grant. Preference will, however, be given to applications initiated at the community level or with substantial community input. We welcome joint applications from more than one organisation, although the application needs to be auspiced by a single incorporated organisation.

NSW Department of Commerce - The Co-operative Development Grants Program
Internal Due Date

The Co-operative Development Grants Program provides funding for research projects, education and feasibility studies that assist the NSW co-operative sector to grow and remain a viable sector of our economy. Myer Foundation: Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program
Internal Due Date


The current priority areas for the Poverty and Disadvantage Small Grants Program are as follows:

  • Communities experiencing social and economic exclusion with particular emphasis on Indigenous Australians, asylum seekers and refugees, and people living in isolated
  • rural and remote areas of Australia
  • Children and young people from impoverished backgrounds whose opportunities for development and advancement are curtailed
  • Small, discreet projects that meet the needs of a community rather than supplementary funding for large projects. A small, discreet project will be considered to have a total budget of up to $50,000.
Grants are capped at $10,000, and are made for a one-year period only. The requested amount may be part of a budget of up to $50,000. Only one application can be considered per applicant. This includes applications submitted to another funding area of The Myer Foundation or the Sidney Myer Fund. Exceptions are made when multiple applications are received from universities and other large organisations where they represent different faculties, departments or schools, and the proposals are unrelated.

Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS): Research Grants and Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants 2010/2011
Internal Due Date


The Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) National Taxonomy Research Grant Program provides grants for taxonomic research. Grants are awarded for research projects where the primary aim is to undertake taxonomic research on the Australian biota or to develop products that aid in the dissemination of taxonomic information. The program also supports projects that build Australian taxonomic capacity. All research grants awarded in the 2010/2011 grants round will be of three years duration.

Lirabenda Endowment Fund: Research Grants
Internal Due Date


The Field Naturalists Society of South Australia Inc. (FNSSA) established the Lirabenda Endowment Fund with the intention of making available research grants to encourage and promote research into the biota and natural environment of South Australia. 

The Lirabenda Research Grants Committee considers all applications for grants from the Lirabenda Endowment Fund with this intention in mind. It promotes the conservation of natural features and habitat and the preservation of native flora, fauna and fungi of Australia and, in particular, South Australia.

Applications are encouraged from research institutions for supervised project funding at the Honours Degree, Masters Degree and PhD levels and for projects conducted by researchers at South Australian Research Institutes.

Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research - Project Development

ACIAR is part of Australia's international development cooperation program and works toward advancing Australia's national interest by assisting developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. It does this by encouraging Australian agricultural scientists to use their skills for the benefit of developing countries through international agricultural research and development partnerships.

ACIAR welcomes ideas for new projects at any time. Initial project ideas should be addressed to the appropriate ACIAR Research Program Manager (RPM). ACIAR's principal goals are to reduce food insecurity, improve livelihoods, and care for the natural resource base for agriculture. Australia & Pacific Science Foundation: Project Grants
Internal Due Date

In seeking to achieve its aims, The Australia & Pacific Science Foundation (APSF) provides support, on a competitive basis, for the following activities:

  • The top priority is to encourage high quality research by scientists in Australian national or state institutions, and similar institutions in other countries of the South West Pacific.
  • Occasional support may also be given to such activities as training, publications or conferences.

Typically the APSF provides project grants up to A$15,000 per year for up to three years. Grants are awarded to institutions within Australia or other countries of the South West Pacific region for activities within those countries or within the region.

The Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) - Research Projects (Request for Proposals)

The Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) is an international non-profit organization, based in Muscat, Oman. The purpose of the Center’s research program is to conduct, support and coordinate basic and applied R&D in water desalination and supporting fields, with the overall objective to reduce the cost of desalination.

The RFP addresses all individuals, institutions and companies, worldwide, engaged in the different fields of desalination practice, in desalination R&D, in academic teaching or in practical training. The Center budget for this RFP is in the order of US$ 500,000.

The Wenner-Gren Foundation: Dissertation Fieldwork Grants
Internal Due Date

Dissertation Fieldwork Grants are awarded to aid doctoral or thesis research. The program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, or subfield. The Foundation particularly welcomes proposals that employ a comparative perspective, can generate innovative approaches or ideas, and/or integrate two or more subfields.

Dissertation Fieldwork Grants provide a maximum of US $15,000 and the Osmundsen Initiative supplement provides up to an additional $5,000 for a maximum grant of US $20,000. Students must be enrolled in a doctoral program (or equivalent, if applying from outside the United States) at the time of application. Students of all nationalities are eligible to apply. Post-Ph.D. Research Grants are awarded to individuals holding a Ph.D. or equivalent degree to support individual research projects. The program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation.

Post-Ph.D. Research Grants provide a maximum of US $20,000 and the Osmundsen Initiative supplement provides up to an additional $5,000 for a maximum grant of US $25,000. Grants are for research expenses. Under special circumstances grants can be renewed to support longer-term research projects. Applicants can apply regardless of institutional affiliation, country of residence, or nationality.

US Department of Defense (DoD): Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Career Development Award (Pre-Application)
Internal Due Date


The Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program's (PRORP) Career Development Award is being offered for the first time in FY09. This award supports a mentored research experience to prepare military investigators without significant experience in orthopaedic research for a productive, independent career in this field. This award supports individuals in the early stages of their careers by providing the experience necessary to pursue career opportunities at the forefront of orthopaedic research and make significant contributions to combat-relevant orthopaedic research and/or clinical care.

The maximum period of performance is 3 years and the maximum allowable funding for the entire period of performance is $225,000 in direct costs.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: Research Grants Opportunities
Internal Due Date


AFSP offers six types of research grants:

1. Linked Standard Research Grants: for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.

2. Young Investigator Grants: for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.

3. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.

4. Standard Research Grants: for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.

5. Distinguished Investigator Grants: for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.

6. Pilot Grants: of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

The Wenner-Gren Foundation: International Collaborative Research Grants
Internal Due Date

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars, where the principal investigators bring different and complementary perspectives, knowledge, and/or skills to the project.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication. By encouraging international collaborations, the grant contributes to the development of an international anthropology that values and incorporates different national perspectives and resources. By providing training funds, the grant helps to build capacity in countries were anthropology may be under-resourced. Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.

The grants are for a maximum of US$30,000 for the research project.

Internal deadline for Round 2 is 24 Nov 2009 for projects starting in July through December of the following year.

US Department of Defense (DoD): Lung Cancer Biospecimen Resource Network Award Pre-Application)

The LCRP Lung Cancer Biospecimen Resource Network (LCBRN) Award is intended to provide infrastructure support for the development of a lung cancer biospecimen resource that will facilitate the collection, processing, annotation, storage, and distribution of high-quality human lung cancer biospecimens through a collaborative network across multiple institutions.

International Union Against Cancer (UICC): Yamagiwa-Yoshida Memorial International Study Grants
Internal Due Date

The purpose of these grants is to enable cancer investigators from any country to carry out bilateral research projects abroad which exploit complementary materials or skills, including advanced training in experimental methods or special techniques.

Candidates should possess appropriate scientific or medical qualifications and a minimum of two years postdoctoral experience, demonstrate active engagement in cancer research and have recent publications in the international peer-reviewed literature.

National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD): Young Investigator Award Program
Internal Due Date

NARSAD's Young Investigator Award Program provides support for the most promising young scientists conducting neurobiological research. One and two year awards up to $30,000 per year are provided to enable promising investigators to either extend research fellowship training or begin careers as independent research faculty. Basic and/or clinical investigators are supported, but research must be relevant to serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, or child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.

Meningitis Research Foundation: Research Grants (Preliminary Proposals)
Internal Due Date

Research proposals must demonstrate clear relevance to meningitis and septicaemia and have potential for prevention of these diseases or other clinical or public health benefit. Priority is given to research that produces results in immediate problem areas, including prevention of all forms of meningitis and associated infections, improving treatment and outlook for patients, and improving the speed and accuracy of diagnosis.

Meningitis Research Foundation seeks to fund research that is most likely to defeat meningitis and septicaemia. Research grants may be held in any country but must meet UK standards of research ethics, scientific integrity and animal welfare, and research institutions must be able to accept the charity's Terms and Conditions of Grant Aid including the policy on protection of intellectual property rights described therein.

Majority of grants awarded are in the region of 70,000 - 100,000 English pounds per year for up to three years, with a number of small grants of up to 30,000 English pounds.

The James S. McDonnell Foundation: Collaborative Activity Awards

The Foundation offers Collaborative Activity Awards to initiate interdisciplinary discussions on problems or issues, to help launch interdisciplinary research networks, or to fund communities of researchers/practitioners dedicated to developing new methods, tools, and applications of basic research to applied problems. The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF): Rapid Response Innovation Awards
Internal Due Date

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) announces the launch of the Rapid Response Innovation Awards, a one-of-a-kind rolling application program to support novel Parkinson's disease related research in real-time. The goal of this exciting new program is to rapidly support innovative research focused on the cause of and cure for Parkinson's disease (PD).

MJFF is eager to fund high-risk, high-reward projects tackling critical scientific roadblocks that if successful, can open new avenues for PD
therapy development. With the understanding that submission and review of innovative, high-risk, high-reward proposals should not be limited to one deadline each year, the Rapid Response Innovation Awards will operate on a rolling basis. Research proposals may be submitted at any time during the year and funding decisions will be made within six weeks of receiving the application. Rapid Response Innovation Awards are designed to support projects with little to no existing preliminary data, but that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding or treatment of Parkinson's disease. Program Highlights:

The Broad Foundation: Medical Research Program (BMRP) for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Internal Due Date


Research grants are available for innovative proposals that will lead to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis or therapy of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Investigators in nonprofit institutions worldwide are eligible for funding.

Basic and clinical investigators, scientists not currently working in inflammatory bowel disease, and interdisciplinary teams are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to proposals for work conducted with patients and with strong potential of clinical applicability in the foreseeable future. Research using non-human material should lead to translational benefits to patients with IBD.

Funding may be requested for up to two years. Second-year funding will be based on an evaluation of the progress and the perceived value of the findings from the first year of funding. There are no deadlines or specific dates by which to request funding. Proposals are accepted and reviewed year–round, and the BMRP makes every effort to provide rapid response and funding.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS): Research Funding
Internal Due Dates

ICAS supports high quality research which is timely and relevant to the accountancy profession or business. Applications are encouraged from researchers and institutions anywhere in the world. Successful applicants benefit from a close working relationship with a world class professional body which has close links with national and international policy makers and regulators. Universities Federation for Animal Welfare: Research and Project Awards
Internal Due Date


Through its Research awards, UFAW aims to encourage high quality research that is likely to lead to substantial improvements in animal welfare. UFAW seeks to promote both fundamental research aimed at providing new insight into the subjective mental experiences of animals relevant to their welfare and at understanding their needs and preferences, and also to promote applied research aimed at developing practical solutions to animal welfare problems. UFAW is concerned with the welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, and captive wild animals and with free-living wild animals whose welfare is compromised by humans.

National Geographic Society: Waitt Grants Program
Internal Due Date

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program, an initiative of the National Geographic Society and the Waitt Institute for Discovery, helps qualified and experienced individuals launch the most difficult stage of a project for which to secure funding—the search. Grants are made for exploratory fieldwork that holds promise for new breakthroughs in the natural and social sciences. NGS/Waitt Grants applications are processed throughout the year and grants are awarded expeditiously to help researchers take advantage of immediate opportunities.

Funded through a five-year grant from the Waitt Family Foundation, the NGS/Waitt Grants Program is administered by National Geographic Mission Programs and makes approximately one hundred grants annually of $5,000 to $15,000. Proposals are considered as they are received and awards are made within weeks of application.

The Austrian Science Fund (FWF): The Lise Meitner Program

Highly qualified scientists of any discipline who could contribute to the scientific development of an Austrian research institution by working at it. The Lise Meitner Program is designed:

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund (the Fund) was established in 2003 as part of an historic agreement for Australia to supply LNG to China. The fund supports activities aimed at establishing genuine, long-term partnerships within the energy sector that create positive economic and environmental outcomes, increase knowledge and skills, particularly in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, and enhance the relationship between Australia and China.

The Australia China Natural Gas Technology Partnership Fund provides opportunities for training, scholarships, research and technology transfer between China and Australia in the natural gas and LNG industry. It has a focus on increasing knowledge about the natural gas production-to-consumption chain including liquefaction, transport, re-gasification, distribution, engineering and procurement.

The fund also fosters the development of long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships across the energy sector between Australia and China. Funding is available both for Research and Post Graduate Top-Up Scholarships.

Alexander von Humboldt: Humboldt Research Fellowships

Humboldt Research Fellowships for experienced researchers are the instrument with which the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars from abroad, who completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago1 to spend extended periods of research (6-18 months; may be divided up into a maximum of three blocks) in Germany.

Centre for International Mobility (CIMO): Fellowships Programme
Internal Due Date

The CIMO Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.

The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 800-1200 euros (in 2009). The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by CIMO.

The Patrick White Playwrights’ Award is a joint initiative of Sydney Theatre Company and The Sydney Morning Herald.
