South Australian university-based or independent researchers can apply for OHSW Commissioned Research Grants to undertake applied research that helps expand the body of knowledge on occupational health, safety and welfare in this state.

A total of approximately $600,000 is available in 2010, with a minimum of $50,000 to be allocated to each of the successful applicants. In exceptional circumstances, applications for less than $50,000 will be considered.

While research projects must normally be completed within three years, special consideration may be given to longer durations, for example when longitudinal research in undertaken. Under the selection criteria, intended projects must match the objectives of the OHSW Strategic Framework for South Australia through research aimed at preventing work-related injury and illness. Proposed research projects must also address the priorities identified in the OHSW Research Strategy for South Australia.

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to motor neurone disease are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2011.

1. Grants-in-Aid for research into motor neurone disease in 2011: The MND Research Institute of Australia regards its role as one of providing seed-funding for research that is innovative and having a clear relationship to the causes, treatments and cures of MND, or the support of people living with MND.  Applications for projects in biomedical and health care research are encouraged. 

A range of grants, including the named grants with special conditions, are offered. In recent years, special conditions for some of these grants have included:

• scientific research relevant to the cause, treatment or cure of motor neurone disease
• research into cause, treatment or cure of MND in basic or applied science
• applied research into MND, including social research
• research investigating the genes responsible for familial MND
• attendance at the International Symposium on ALS/MND.

Applications for grants-in-aid up to a maximum value of $100,000 will be considered. 
Fourteen grants-in-aid were awarded for 2010 with an average value of about $32,500.
The International Symposium on ALS/MND will be held in Sydney in 2011 from 30 November to 2 December.  All MND researchers and grant recipients in Australia are encouraged to attend.

2. Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011 - 2013): The Fellowships of the MND Research Institute of Australia aim to encourage young researchers to focus their interest on MND The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease.  Salary will be funded for three years at $75,000 per year.

The Cancer & Bowel Research Trust is an independent non-profit organisation whose objectives are to provide funding to scientific and medical research into the causes, cure and prevention of cancer related illness for all Australians, along with increasing community awareness of preventative measures into the causes of bowel cancer.

The Cancer & Bowel Research Trust does not fund programs of research. Grant assistance is intended to support work for which the applicants already have some or will have some support within their respective institutions.

There are no specific categories of research which have been nominated as having a higher or lower priority than others. However, the Trust reserves the right to support particular research needs as they emerge, and to support worthwhile research which would have difficulty in finding funding in terms of priorities set by other funding agencies.

Grants are offered each year to support research over a period of 1-3 years. The Trust reserves the right to offer an award for a period less than that sought in the application. Up to $40,000 is available any one year.

Kidney Health Australia’s mission is "To advance the public health agenda through awareness, detection, prevention and management of kidney disease" and their vision is “to save lives and reduce the need for dialysis”. The focus of all future Kidney Health Australia funded research projects will be “to reduce the burden of Chronic Kidney Disease through expanding the range of evidence-based knowledge”.

Areas considered to be a special focus for research support include:

• Improving and assisting community awareness and prevention strategies
• Increasing detection rates of early Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
• Documenting CKD demographics, trends and costs
• Implementing best care approaches to detected CKD cases
• Facilitating a smooth transition into dialysis and transplantation
• Improving outcomes and quality of life on dialysis
• Reducing the financial and social impact of CKD on patients and families

Applicants will be encouraged to specially focus on the harder-to-reach population groups in the community including:

• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
• People from culturally and linguistically diverse populations;
• People experiencing socio-economic disadvantage.

Four project grants of up to $50,000 each will be offered for commencement in 2011. The conditions for these Project Grants include:

• Projects must fit above criteria and priority will be given to those projects capable of completion within a 2 year timeframe (although KHA will not provide 2 years of funding).
• Project “deliverables” to be identified and reported upon prior to final payment of the grant.

The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) was established at The Australian National University in 2003 as a component of the Primary Health Care Research Evaluation and Development (PHC RED) strategy. Its mission is to provide national leadership in improving the quality and effectiveness of primary health care through the conduct of high quality, priority-driven research and the support and promotion of best practice.

The WH Gladstones Population and Environment Fund offers support for empirical research into how the size, distribution, material aspirations and other characteristics of Australia's population are likely to affect our environment not only our land and landscape, but also social cohesion, health, the economy and defence. Population pressures in other countries which may have an impact on Australia could also be part of the research.

Research to be supported should aim to quantify various aspects of the human footprint, and to model likely ecological and other consequences. The grant in 2011 will be $12,000. The renewed grant of $12,000 for 2012 will depend on the Academy of Science receiving a satisfactory progress report at the end of the first year. Applicants should have completed a PhD not more than 10 years ago. Persons engaged in research for a PhD may also be considered if their thesis topics are judged to be highly significant.

Applications for 2011 AINSE Research Awards are now open.

Researchers seeking access to ANSTO’s Institute of Materials Engineering and ANSTO LifeSciences: For 2011, the AINSE Researchers’ Guide identifies research tasks rather than facilities. You must identify the research task which aligns with your application. Draft applications including scientific objectives, background, and proposed method and program must be provided to ANSTO research task leaders by 15 August.

For Environmental Science, Archaeology, Geosciences, irradiations and other facilities, the Researchers' Guide lists the facilities available. The list of research tasks and available facilities can be found in the AINSE Researchers' Guides 2011.

AINSE will be awarding 10 honours scholarships this year. In order to be eligible, you must indicate (in the student section of your application) that the proposal is to support an honours student. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit research grant applications to conduct time-sensitive ancillary studies related to heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders in conjunction with ongoing clinical trials and other large clinical studies supported by NIH or non-NIH entities.

The program establishes an accelerated review/award process to support the crucial time frame in which these ancillary studies must be performed. Time-sensitive ancillary studies include those that require active longitudinal data collection and thus need to begin recruiting subjects as close as possible to the start of the parent study. The ancillary study can address any research questions related to the mission of NHLBI for which the parent study can provide participants, infrastructure, and data.

The parent studies most often will be a clinical trial, but also can be an observational study or registry that can provide a sufficient cohort of well-characterized patients. Each ancillary study application must demonstrate the time-sensitive nature of the proposal and must explicitly address why an expedited review is essential to its feasibility.

The HWK announces the launch of a focus program in the area of European studies in 2010. The HWK-Europe-Fellowships are dedicated to foster the studies of European history, politics, culture and societies and to broaden the knowledge about Europe in the world.

The Fellowships are intended for scholars of social sciences and neighbouring disciplines (such as economics, legal studies, history, ethnology, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, etc.) who want to pursue a project on Europe and whose research will benefit from the possibility to study Europe from within. The HWK strongly encourages the application of researchers who plan to set up a temporary study group on their topic at the HWK.

The HWK allows for different financial solutions regarding reimbursement of fellows, such as direct compensation or reimbursement of the home institution. Drug discovery for frontotemporal dementias (FTD) has been hindered by the heterogeneity of the disease. FTD specific biomarkers that reflect pathological differences are needed to select appropriate patients for clinical trials and monitor target‐specific responses to investigational treatments. The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and The Association for Frontotemporal Dementias (AFTD) challenge scientists to meet this unmet medical need by submitting applications through this Request for Proposals (RFP).

The ADDF and AFTD are particularly interested in: FTD relevant imaging agents; CSF and plasma based assays; and TDP-43 and tau-focused biomarkers specifically relevant to FTD populations. They will provide grants for one year duration (up to $150,000 each) with the possibility of follow‐on funding. The fiscal year (FY) 2010 Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in the field of combat-related orthopaedic injury research. Though the PRORP supports groundbreaking research, all projects must demonstrate appropriate judgment and sound rationale. Applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military services, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other Federal Government agencies are highly encouraged.

The PRORP Career Development Award mechanism supports a mentored research experience to prepare military investigators for productive, independent careers in orthopaedic research. It seeks to allow individuals in the early stages of their careers to obtain the experience necessary to pursue career opportunities at the forefront of orthopaedic research and make significant contributions to combat-relevant orthopaedic research and/or clinical care. The PRORP encourages Career Development Award applications for research with significant clinical relevance.

All applications must have a direct relevance to orthopaedic injuries sustained during military combat or combat-related activities and must address at least one of the focus areas listed on Pages 2 and 3 of the full Program Announcement.

Maximum funding for this award is $225,000 in direct costs, plus indirect costs, for a period of performance of three (3) years

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) Research Grant Program funds research on a wide variety of topics related to the mission of LSAC. Specifically included in the program's scope are projects investigating precursors to legal training, selection into law schools, legal education, and the legal profession.

To be eligible for funding, a research project must inform either the process of selecting law students or legal education itself in a demonstrable way. The program welcomes proposals for research proceeding from any of a variety of methodologies, a potentially broad range of topics, and varying time frames. Proposals will be judged on the importance of the questions addressed, their relevance to the mission of LSAC, the quality of the research designs, and the capacity of the researchers to carry out the project. LSAC's membership includes law schools in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Comparative proposals about topics outside the United States, Canada, and Australia are welcome, but they must include some explicit connection to legal education or the legal profession within those countries.

Applicants may use methodologies derived from many disciplines, including anthropology, criminology, demography, economics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. Projects may be qualitative or quantitative, cross-sectional or longitudinal. They may involve any of a variety of research techniques such as surveys, experiments, correlational methods, systematic observations, and ethnography. The program, however, requires that any project that is funded be planned and conducted in accordance with the best social scientific standards that are applicable to the type of research in question.

Possible topics can address a broad range of issues. Although the program welcomes research on a variety of topics, three requests for proposals have been issued in the following areas:

The project is supported by the International Science Linkages (ISL) program. The ISL program supports professional Australian scientists, from both the public and private sectors, to collaborate with international partners on leading edge science and technology in order to contribute to Australia's economic, social and environmental wellbeing. The objectives of the ISL program are to increase the uptake of leading edge science and technology (S&T) through:

• promoting access to and participation by Australian researchers in strategically focussed, leading edge, international scientific research and technology; and
• increased strategic alliances between Australian and overseas researchers.

Priority areas of interest to Australia in COST Actions fall under the six broad themes of medical and health research; agriculture, biotechnology and food; nanotechnology; information and communications technology; environment and climate change; and social sciences and humanities.

Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents residing in Australia at the time of application and be official members of a COST Action. The program does not fund students. Australian researchers travelling to Europe may receive a grant in aid of up to $5,000 for a STSM, covering a return airfare of up to $2,500 and daily living allowances. Daily living allowances, covering accommodation and meals are provided at the rate of $200 per day or a maximum of $2,500 per month, whichever is the smaller amount.

The International Seminars Support Scheme (ISSS) is an Australian Government aid activity administered by AusAID.  The scheme helps to develop knowledge and technical expertise in developing countries, and builds linkages between the government, academic and community sectors in Australia and our partner developing countries.

ISSS is a discretionary scheme. Funds are limited and competition for them is strong. Applications need to provide a convincing case for support, with clear objectives and details of how they will be achieved. The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit foundation dedicated to the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma, and related blood disorders. Through its National Research Program, the Foundation seeks to foster innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of these cancers, and the care of patients and families. The Fellowship aims to:

• Facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology;
• Exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioural, and epidemiological areas of cancer research, and in cancer control and prevention;
• Acquire up-to-date clinical management, diagnostic and therapeutic expertise.

Applications are encouraged in the fields of cancer control and prevention, epidemiology and cancer registration, public education, and behavioural sciences. The short-term Fellowships permit successful candidates to spend up to 3 months at a suitable host institute abroad. The Nature Conservancy, and the Ecological Society of Australia have great pleasure in announcing The Nature Conservancy Applied Conservation Award established to fund a postgraduate scholarship in the field of applied conservation science. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a U.S. based conservation organisation that funds conservation activities in 35 countries and 50 US States. This award is part of TNC’s Ecological Science Program and has been made possible through a generous donation from The Thomas Foundation.

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds is a public foundation - an independent, not-for-profit institution for the exclusive and direct promotion of basic research in biomedicine. The ASPET-Astellas Awards in Translational Pharmacology are intended to extend fundamental research closer to applications directed towards improving human health. The awards will be given to 1) recognize those individuals whose research has the potential to lead to the introduction of novel pharmacologic approaches or technologies that may offer significant advances in clinical medicine in the future and 2) to facilitate that translational process. The awards are made possible by a grant to ASPET from the Astellas Foundation.

Three (3) awards of $30,000 each will be made to individuals. The money may be used for supplemental research funding, travel, training, or in any way that furthers the goals described above. In addition to the $30,000, award winners will receive travel to and lodging at the ASPET annual meeting for the winner and his/her spouse.

There are no restrictions on nominees for this award. Any ASPET member in good standing may nominate an individual for this award. Awards will be judged in two categories, viz. junior and senior investigators, with at least one award being given in each category. Junior investigators are defined as individuals at the assistant professor or equivalent level. In the event that there are insufficient meritorious candidates in either the junior or senior category, the committee reserves the right to make all awards in a single category. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The GRDC provides sponsorship assistance to organisations wishing to conduct a conference, workshop, seminar or field day that directly benefits the Australian grains industry.

The aim is to develop the skills and capacity required to achieve grains industry and GRDC objectives. GRDC places a high priority on the dissemination and communication of knowledge gained from the experience offered by conference sponsorship.

The winning entry for the Michelson Prize in Reproductive Biology will have, at minimum, the following characteristics:

• Single dose, non-surgical sterilant
• Safe and effective in male and female, cats and dogs
• Suitable for administration in a field setting
• Viable pathway to regulatory approval
• Reasonable manufacturing process and cost

All prize claims will be reviewed by Found Animals and their scientific advisors. Claimants will be required to submit a data package demonstrating satisfactory achievement of the prize criteria. Found Animals may ask for clarification or request additional data in order to verify a prize claim. All animal research performed in pursuit of the Michelson Prize in Reproductive Biology must conform to Found Animals' standards for humane treatment of animal subjects.

A program of prestigious awards initiated in 1998 to recognise outstanding achievements in collaboration between business and tertiary education in the fields of Research & Development and Education & Training. The objective of the program is to highlight at a national level the benefits of such collaboration, and enhance links between industry and universities.

The award is made to a program or project involving a collaborative partnership between business and tertiary education. Therefore, the collaborating organisations nominated for the award must come from business and from tertiary education.

This year’s Awards are for:

• Best Research & Development Collaboration
• Best Higher Education & Training Collaboration
• Best Vocational Education & Training Collaboration
• Best Community Engagement Collaboration
• Outstanding Collaboration with a Regional Focus – R&D or E&T

Applications may be submitted for an Award in one or more categories, however, an application may only win one Award.
