The aim of the TRF is to allow the FRDC to provide investment funds to its stakeholders in a timely manner to take advantage of opportunities, avert threats, or manage unforeseen events, as they arise. A TRF project may be of an urgent ‘break-the-glass’ type; or, it could also be a project that is used to overcome significant hurdles in, or to significantly fast track, important stakeholder processes, including production. In these cases it is likely that the adoption and benefits will be significantly brought forward if the project had not been funded at all. Investment criteria:

The International Research Grants Program (IRGP) is designed to promote innovative research that has a high potential to significantly advance the knowledge of Parkinson's disease (PD) but little likelihood of securing funding through more traditional sources. By supporting novel, "high risk/high reward" research, the goal of the IRGP is to enable investigators to demonstrate the feasibility of their ideas while generating preliminary data necessary for the support of future funding. IRGP award a maximum of US$75,000 in direct costs per year for two years, subject to review of first year progress. Research grants are eligible for an additional 10 percent in indirect costs. The IRGP is open to applicants both nationally and internationally, possessing postdoctoral training or a medical degree, with clinical, preclinical or basic research proposals that will directly impact Parkinson's disease or its treatment. Preference will be given to scientists who are at an early stage in their professional careers. Postdoctoral researchers/scientists and fellows are not eligible to apply for this program.

As part of the expanded program, Australia and India agreed to introduce a new ‘Grand Challenge’ component, to fund projects of larger scope and scale designed to deliver tangible outcomes in areas of shared ‘grand challenge’. Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis to consortia of one or more eligible partners from both Australia and India, for joint research projects in specified priority themes. The projects would typically run for three years and for no longer than four years. Total funding of up to AUD 3 million per project will be available to the Australian consortium. The Government of India will provide matching support to the Indian consortium Expressions of Interest are called in the first instance to address the programs priority themes:

Founded in 1950 by aerospace pioneer James S. McDonnell, the Foundation was established to "improve the quality of life," and does so by contributing to the generation of new knowledge through its support of research and scholarship. The Foundation offers Collaborative Activity Awards to initiate interdisciplinary discussions on problems or issues, to help launch interdisciplinary research networks, or to fund communities of researchers/practitioners dedicated to developing new methods, tools, and applications of basic research to applied problems. In each case the focus of the collaborative activity must meet the program guidelines for one of the following program areas: Collaborative awards will not be awarded in support of large, program-project style research proposals. Applicants requesting funds to support innovative research projects involving several laboratories should consider submitting one or more applications to the 21st Century Research Awards. The budgets for collaborative activities will vary greatly depending on the scope of the proposed problem or project and on the number of people involved. The Foundation recognises that funding must be appropriate to an activity's specific scope and needs. The Foundation requires a Letter of Inquiry prior to a full application. Please submit a copy of Letter of Inquiry, along with the completed University Grant Application Coversheet to Dr Don McMaster (don.mcmaster@adelaide.edu.au) in the Research Branch.
