The theme of this conference reveals how publication ethics is similar across different disciplines. Journal editors, researchers and journal authors from the four points of the scientific compass - physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences and health sciences - face many of the same challenges (authorship disputes, plagiarism and duplicate publication).
COPE’s 1st Asia Pacific seminar will provide insights from each of these four compass points. The speakers will focus on the ethical issues they have faced personally, and discuss how they dealt with them and how they have crafted their policies and processes to avoid potential future problems.
The seminar will include the following invited talks:

Richard O’Hair - editor of Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and a chemist at Melbourne University
Life sciences
David Vaux - Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, is a double-blind peer review advocate, and a specialist at spotting image manipulation

Assessor Reports for Project Grant applications
In July, the NHMRC will be asking all Project Grant Applicants to prepare their applicant responses, ahead of the Grant Review Panels meeting in August. It is important you start planning for this now as there is typically a short turn-around time for responses.
Assessor feedback will be available and processed through RGMS. Ensure you have access to this online application system. If you know you won’t be available, make plans for a nominated CI to respond on your behalf. (You will need to provide RGMS login access to the application.)

An Invitation to Nominate Researchers to a New Postdoctoral Reference Group
The NHMRC is seeking representatives to participate in a new reference group that is being established for early-to-mid-career researchers.
The aim of the group will be to provide feedback on issues of relevance to those crucial post PhD years in researcher’s careers in order to better inform the deliberations of NHMRC’s Research Committee. Whilst this will include the Early career and Career Development Fellowship schemes, it will also encompass broader issues applying to all funding schemes and other matters that may affect developing researchers.

Pathophysiology of HIV-Associated Neurodegeneration in Aging Populations on Long-Term Anti-Retroviral Therapy (R01)
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the
National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the National Institute of Neurological
Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invite research grant applications focused on
elucidating the mechanisms of HIV-associated neuropathogenesis in the context
of aging, chronic infection with HIV, and long term exposure to Highly Active
Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). Understanding the pathogenesis of HAND in HIV-infected individuals
over 50 years of age, in light of potential interactions with HAART,
neurodegenerative diseases, and aging-related co-morbid conditions are the
focus of this announcement.

Through this programme the UMAT Board will provide funding for research that enhances the knowledge and understanding of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Test (UMAT) itself and the role of UMAT in the selection of students wishing to pursue a career in the health professions.
Funding

- Category 1 (minor or pilot projects) – projects with a budget up to $40 000
- Category 2 (major projects) – projects with a budget up to $100 000, including those with a timeline up to three years.

The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) provides national leadership in improving the quality and effectiveness of primary health care through the conduct of high quality, priority-driven research and the support and promotion of best practice.
As a part of its 2011 Stream Funding, the Institute is now offering grants for up to six projects, to provide evidence on how primary care for vulnerable consumers can be consumer centred, best delivered, and coordinated.
APHCRI seeks to commission research where applicants will answer preferably no more than two of the following questions:
- How do people from vulnerable groups, as identified by the definition above, access primary health care?
- How do people from vulnerable groups establish and maintain their care networks?
- What models are most effective in delivering coordinated primary care to people from vulnerable groups?
- What strategies for providing coordinated care across sectors (within health, and between health and other agencies) have been successful in providing care for people from vulnerable groups?
- How can local health planning incorporate the needs of people from vulnerable groups?
- How can health care providers engage and encourage people from vulnerable groups in managing their health care?
- What is the role of e-health in the care of vulnerable groups?
Funding
Each of the Coordination and the Vulnerable Consumer Health Care Research Streams will be eligible to receive up to $150,000. Applicants based in rural locations may be eligible for additional funding of up to $25,000.
The timeframes will be set in the contract for successful applicants and the research project is set for an eighteen month period.

The objective of the Macular Degeneration Foundation Research Grant is to facilitate and expedite substantial bio-medical or psychosocial research that is likely to produce significant outcomes in reducing the impact and/or incidence of Macular Degeneration.
In 2012, the Foundation intends to make available a grant, or grants, of up to $250,000 per year for a maximum of three years, for research commencing no later than June 30 2012.
Grant funding may be used for the following purposes:
- Direct research expenses attributable to the proposed research, which may include the salary of appropriate research personnel. The primary investigator may use the award to cover up to 50% of his/her own salary
- Equipment necessary for the proposed research
- Expenses for training in new techniques that will benefit the research project
- Expenses related to the presentation of research data at scientific meetings or through other means that will contribute to the dissemination of the scientific knowledge gained from the research project
- Other purposes described in the proposal at the discretion of the Foundation

A Development Grant provides funding support to individual researchers, research teams, or a HMR company in partnership with a researcher/s to undertake research at the early proof-of-principle or pre-seed stage.
The Scheme supports the commercial development of a product, process, procedure or service that if applied, would result in improved health care, disease prevention or provide health cost savings.
Applications must demonstrate a basic understanding of the process and steps required to move from research to outcomes that can be commercialised, including:
- the process and steps to a market, the nature of the market;
- the milestones and risks of the venture; and
- an understanding of possible means of handling intellectual property connected with the project.

The PCFA encourage and support their interest in prostate cancer research through a research grants program. The Foundation is especially seeking application in its priority funding areas, specifically for projects which aim to:
- Discover the genetic and cellular factors which initiate and/or perpetuate prostate cancer
- Discover, develop and clinically validate new, non-invasive tests to detect prostate cancer, and/or to determine whether a patient's cancer is surgically curable
- Discover, develop and clinically validate new biomarkers that predict the future clinical course of prostate cancer and/or the response to future chemotherapy

The Nature Foundation SA Inc is a non-profit body which raises funds to conserve and sustain South Australia's natural biodiversity. Since its inception, NFSA has raised many millions of dollars for on-the-ground projects, land conservation, education programs and vital research.
Nature Foundation is now inviting and encouraging applications for a Research Project Grant from researchers wishing to undertake projects in areas pertinent to the Foundation's interests. Projects could involve applied research, awards, prizes, scholarships, minor works in parks, wildlife publications or similar.

The Small Environmental Grants Scheme aims to build capacity in local communities to effect long-term beneficial change in the natural environment, and to support and encourage research, monitoring and knowledge sharing relating to all aspects of Australia's natural environment.
Wherever possible, funded projects will:
- be innovative and serve as a model for future projects
- show collaboration with other groups, particularly community groups
- result in long term improvement of the natural environment
- indicate clearly, and thoughtfully, how advice of the project's outcomes will be shared
Funding
There is no official maximum amount, however grants are generally offered at between $5,000 and $10,000.
Eligibility
The Norman Wettenhall Foundation will not support future project applications that:
- are concerned with advocacy
- are concerned with buildings, art, general education, social welfare and medical research or health matters
- include the purchase of equipment, except when a part of a larger project
- contribute to capital or endowment funds established to provide a corpus for institutions
- include domestic or international travel, unless critical to the application
- are focussed on the rehabilitation or rescue of animals
- are primarily focussed on kitchen or bush gardens, nurseries or arboretums

The Department of Primary Industry and Resources (PIRSA) is seeking proposals from industry to undertake cooperative geophysical surveys jointly funded by industry and the government’s PACE 2020 initiative.
As part of PACE 2020’s expanded collaborative program, the South Australian government is launching the PACE Targeting scheme, which seeks to fund high quality, technically and economically sound projects designed to gather geophysical information in greenfield and economically prospective areas of South Australia.
Funding
The maximum possible allocation for any one project funded by PACE will be up to the value of $75,000.
Grant funding is only supplied for survey costs (including mobilisation) and data processing. Funding is not supplied for ancillary or associated services (e.g. land access, legal fees, project management or other geoscientific costs). Grant funding for successful proposals will not exceed 50% of the total proposed survey and processing costs.

Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC) announces its call for researchers to submit new research, development and extension (RD&E) proposals for activities commencing from 1 July 2012.For projects commencing from July 2012
Priority will be given to projects which contribute to changes in sustainable productivity in sugarcane growing, harvesting and/or milling as outlined in the National Sugarcane Industry Research, Development and Extension Strategy.
Industry goals identified in the National Sugarcane Industry RD&E strategy include:

The Apex Foundation for Research into Intellectual Disability (AFRID) invites applications from individuals or research teams for grants in support of new or existing research projects.
Grants may be awarded to workers in any discipline (medicine, education, epidemiology, psychology, biology, sociology, etc.) where the research is concerned with the causes, diagnosis, prevention or treatment of intellectual disability and allied conditions. The National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund promotes quality evidence-based practice in drug law enforcement to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of licit and illicit drug use in Australian society. A key aim of NDLERF is to promote collaboration between the Law Enforcement Sector and Researchers. The Fund functions within the broader context provided by the National Drug Strategic Framework.
The NDLERF Board of Management invites applications from researchers to undertake innovative quality research to assist in the development of technologies, tools or techniques that will assist law enforcement agencies' responses to licit and/or illicit substances in the community. This can include research into the extent and impact of substance misuse on the community and policing, or research which examines or evaluates the effectiveness of existing interventions and strategies.
The NDLERF Board of Management has expressed a preference for research projects of up to two years in direction.

The Criminology Research Fund derives its income from an annual contribution from the Australian Government and each of the state and territory Governments.
The Council is empowered by section 47(1) of the Criminology Research Act 1971 to make grants for:
"...such purposes of, or related to, criminological research (including the dissemination of information and advice and the publication of reports, periodicals, books and papers in connection with criminological research and the results of criminological research) as are determined by the Council."
The term criminological research is defined in the Act to mean research in connection with:
- the causes, correction and prevention of criminal behaviour, and
- any related matter

The National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre invites research proposals that address priority issues relating to productive ageing. Two or more innovative projects will be funded that have clear outcomes and benefits for seniors and the general public. NSPAC encourages applications both from academic researchers and researchers involved with community groups and/or organisations that have a focus on ageing and older persons.
Funded research will challenge the view of ageing as a time of decline and dependency and help build a strong evidence base for productive ageing. Topics of particular interest to the NSPAC for this grant round include:
- financial literacy among older persons
- intergenerational support provided by older people
- the use of new technologies in older age to encourage healthy and productive ageing
Eligibility
Research grants are available to both experienced and early career researchers to build on the current body of knowledge and/or to investigate new research ideas. It is not intended the grant will be used to ‘top up’ other research funding or support students who should be funded from academic sources.
Funding
Grants are awarded at a maximum of $40, 000, and projects are expected to be completed within a 9-month period.

This grant is designed to support the development of creative and innovative
programmes for education (of the public or non-sleep health professionals)
and/or outreach on sleep health-related research for a variety of audiences.
Specific types of sleep education research grants supported by this programme could include innovative educational approaches designed to:
- improve knowledge transfer to clinicians (non-sleep specialists), allied health and/or community health care providers about sleep and sleep disorders, or
- transfer knowledge gained from sleep and circadian rhythm research into the broad public arena, for example child care venues, schools, workplaces, aged care and community groups that may or may not be brought together around health issues
Applications may include:
- social marketing strategies
- research-practice partnership models
- community-based or clinic-based participatory research
- new models that foster partnerships among researchers
- providers and the
public
Funding
Maximum of $20, 000 for one year. Proposals for a single $20,000 grant distributed over two years will also be considered.

This grant is open to individuals or small teams who work in Australia or New Zealand and the health education work must be undertaken in Australia or New Zealand.

The Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) Children's Project strives to assist respected scientists in developing a clearer understanding of ataxia-telangiectasia.
The Project provides competitive grant awards for basic and translational research grants related to A-T. One and two-year projects are funded up to a maximum total direct cost of US $75,000 per year. Average funding amounts awarded range between US$25,000 - 50,000 per year.
Current priorities for funding involve proposals that are relevant to a therapeutic intervention for A-T and/or proposals that facilitate translational or clinical research for this disease.

The International Myeloma Foundation funds several research grants including the Brian D. Novis Research Award. These awards go to doctors/researchers doing work in the field of multiple myeloma. Funding is awarded in both Junior and Senior grant categories.
Junior Research Award
Funding: US$50,000
Proposals considered most favourable are those that provide evidence of an applicant's research initiative and creativity. The Selection Committee will also weigh the previous accomplishments of the applicant, the probability of meaningful results from the proposed research, and the likely contribution of the research to the advancement of our knowledge of myeloma etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention.
Candidate must also have:
- completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships no later than August 1 of the application year
- the ability to devote a minimum of 50% of his or her time to the research project during the Award year
Senior Research Award
Funding: US $80,000
These awards are targeted towards established investigators with a track record in myeloma or related research, and are designed for projects which represent a different focus, direction or area of research from those in which they are currently funded. In most cases, these awards will be for pilot projects to obtain sufficient funding for larger applications from NIH or similar larger funding agencies.

The DMRDP Military Infectious Diseases Clinical Trial Award (MID-CTA) scheme is soliciting proposals focused on wound infection prevention and management as well as antimicrobial countermeasures.
The MID-CTA is intended to support early phase clinical trials/testing with the potential to have a major impact on treatment of combat-related wound infections. Proposed projects should be designed to demonstrate:
- the utility of a novel biomarker/assay, and/or
- the safety and efficacy of novel therapies in human patients suffering from serious, debilitating wound infections due to trauma
Funding is available to the amount of US$ 2,500,000. The maximum period of performance is 3 years, though applicants may request the entire maximum funding amount for a project that may have a period of performance less than 3 years.

New Investigator Award applications must include preliminary data that is relevant to NF and/or Schwannomatosis and the proposed project.
Postdoctoral Traineeship Award

The intent of the training award is to enable recent medical or other doctoral degree graduates to obtain the necessary experience to pursue an independent career in NF research. Candidates for this award must demonstrate a strong desire to pursue a career in NF research.
Under this award mechanism, the postdoctoral trainee is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) and, as such, should write the project narrative with appropriate direction from the mentor. The focus of these awards is on the PI, the mentor, and the training program and environment. These awards primarily provide salary support for the PI and require the active involvement of a designated mentor who is an established NF researcher, as evidenced by a demonstrated record of past and/or current funding and publications. While the PI is not required to have previous experience in NF research, applications for this award must focus on NF research.

This scheme is a joint initiative of the Go8 and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Germany's national agency for the support of international academic co-operation.
Its chief aims are to:

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) Research Grant Program funds research projects investigating precursors to legal training, selection into law schools, legal education, and the legal profession.
Investigators need not be members of law school faculties. Proposals from interdisciplinary teams of law faculty and researchers from outside law schools are strongly encouraged. Meritorious project could include methodologies derived from many disciplines, including anthropology, criminology, demography, economics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology
Eligibility
To be eligible for funding, a research project must inform either the process of selecting law students or legal education itself in a demonstrable way.
The program is open to applicants from all countries, and grants must be made to an institution or organisation, not to individuals. Entities outside the United States, Canada, and Australia are encouraged to collaborate with an institution within those countries to satisfy research issues that are subject to institutional ethical review.

Duration: One term of four years (first two years to be spent overseas, subsequent two years to be spent in Australia or New Zealand).

This Fellowship is open to researchers based in eligible Australian institutions to pursue research into nutritional and/or lifestyle aspects of Macular Degeneration, consistent with the mission of the Foundation to reduce the incidence and impact of MD.
In 2012 the Foundation will provide a Research Fellowship of AU$40,000. It is a requirement that the Fellowship will be matched or bettered by the Applicant’s host institution. Fellowships are fulltime for 12 months, however the recipient can apply for further Fellowships in following years.
Eligibilty
- Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents or, if relevant, be eligible for permanent residency on completion of their studies being undertaken in an Australian university. If the latter, research cannot begin until evidence of Permanent Residency has been supplied
- The Blackmores Dr Paul Beaumont Research Fellow must be based in Australia for the duration of the grant
- Researchers working in any field of research relevant to Macular Degeneration are eligible to apply, however the research must relate to the effects of nutrition and/or lifestyle and Macular Degeneration
- Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent. Applicants nearing the end of their PhD are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship funds will not be made available until evidence of PhD acceptance has been provided to the Foundation
- The successful applicant must commence the research no later than June 30, 2012

The Bill Gole MND Postdoctoral Fellowship is directed towards postdoctoral scientists with a track record in areas of neuroscience related to motor neurone disease. Salary for a full-time research fellow will be funded at $75,000 p.a. for a period of up to three years.

The primary objective of the Brain Foundation Research Grants is to support individual researchers and research teams to conduct the highest quality research in brain illnesses and neurological disorders as well as brain and spinal injuries. A subsidiary objective is to provide opportunities for early career researchers to gain initiating funding for projects with potential.
The total amount available for distribution depends on the income of the Brain Foundation in that year. As a guide the grants awarded in 2010 were up to $40,000 each.

Merit and Foundation Investor Access
Normal merit beamtime applications are the standard method to apply for beamtime at the Australian Synchrotron and approximately 50% of beamtime is awarded to merit proposal applications. Foundation investor beamtime is only open to applicants from the 11 foundation investor (FI) consortia members and makes up approximately 30% of the time available (i.e. approximately 3% per FI consortium).
FI consortium members can maximise prospects for beamtime by submitting a proposal that will be considered for both normal (merit-based) and FI beamtime. To do this, researchers are required to prepare a normal proposal and then check the 'submit for foundation investor beamtime' on the submit page of beamtime proposals to give their FI group access to the proposal.

The Canine Research Foundation is seeking applications for grants for research to commence in the year 2012. The Foundation is an independent public trust for the purposes of funding research directed at improving canine health, which it does through a program of annual research grants. The Australian National Kennel Council has adopted the Foundation as its research-funding vehicle.
Grants per project will normally be in the order of $5,000-15,000 in any one year. Projects may extend beyond one year but funding each year will be dependent upon satisfactory progress as given in interim reports.
Funding is not usually provided for salaries, stipends or significant capital equipment.

The Native Vegetation Council (NVC) invites applications for funding of projects under the Native Vegetation Council Significant Environmental Benefit (SEB) Grants. Funding is available for biodiversity projects that will assist in the large scale conservation, restoration and management of native vegetation at a landscape scale.
Priorities for an SEB Grant include:
- Assisting in the enhancement of biodiversity to meet targets established in regional NRM Plans and regional Biodiversity Plans
- The enhancement of remnant native vegetation through the implementation of active management activities including buffering through the establishment and management of rehabilitation/habitat enhancement and/or plantings
- Assisting in achieving targets identified in the Nature Links program or established Nature Links corridors
- Assisting in the rehabilitation, protection and management of key areas identified through biodiversity analysis

The PCFA encourage and support their interest in prostate cancer research through a research grants program. The Foundation is especially seeking application in its priority funding areas, specifically for projects which aim to:
- Discover the genetic and cellular factors which initiate and/or perpetuate prostate cancer
- Discover, develop and clinically validate new, non-invasive tests to detect prostate cancer, and/or to determine whether a patient's cancer is surgically curable

The Leukaemia Foundation’s Senior Research Fellowships provide sustained support for an outstanding young
researcher, preferably between 3 and 10 years postdoctorate, who has
established an international reputation for research in the field of leukaemia,
lymphoma, myeloma and related blood cancers and disorders.
This Fellowship is particularly targeted at outstanding young researchers currently based overseas and who wish to return to Australia to develop independent research programs, although outstanding candidates already based in Australia will be eligible.
The Fellowship is offered for 5 years, with an award of $200, 000 per annum.
Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents or New Zealand citizens holding a Special Category Visa. Applicants who have applied for, but not yet been granted permanent residency or a Special Category Visa, may apply for the award.

As part of their ongoing commitment to IELTS-related validation and research, IELTS Australia and the British Council are making available funding for research projects in 2011/2012. Financial support for individual projects selected will in principle be limited to a maximum of AU$36,000.
Applications are encouraged to undertake research studies which fit within the following broad areas:
Test development and validation issues
- Studies investigating the essential language knowledge, skills, and abilities in domains where IELTS is used (e.g. for migration, employment, academic study)
- Studies investigating the cognitive processes of IELTS test takers

- Studies investigating the Writing and Speaking features that distinguish IELTS proficiency levels

Proposals are welcomed from researchers and institutions with expertise in language learning and assessment research. The Australian Prime Ministers Centre at the Museum of Australian Democracy awards Fellowships to researchers interested in the history, origins, traditions and contemporary practice of Australian democracy, with reference to Australian prime ministers.

The ESA encourages student attendance at its annual conference by providing a number of Student Travel Grants each year.
The value of each individual grant will depend on the number of applicants and the relative travel costs of all applicants, and are generally determined on the basis of relative costs of air travel. In 2011, in addition to usual travel grants, up to five extra travel grants (Wiley-Blackwell Student Fellowships) will be sponsored by Wiley-Blackwell.
These fellowships will be awarded to individuals from the pool of applicants who have the highest travel costs. To be eligible, applicants must be a member of the Society, be the presenting author of a talk or poster, and not have previously won a travel grant from the Society. The Institute in conjunction with the Robert Graham Center is now seeking to appoint the 2011 APHCRI/Robert Graham Center Visiting Fellow. People enrolled in an Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) vocational training program or a recent graduate (up to three years) of these programs and their predecessors can apply.
The successful applicant will visit the Robert Graham Center in Washington DC in late 2011 to undertake a research project relevant to the Robert Graham Center, the Australian primary health care scene and the work of APHCRI.
Policy areas of aligned interest for APHCRI and Robert Graham Center include:
- primary care workforce
- chronic disease and preventative care management- differences in models of care and funding between the US and Australia
- mental health care – comparison of models of care involvement of primary care and funding options
- e-health – the utilisation of electronic health records and uptake of clinical decision support tools
- primary care teams – the use of practice nurses and physician assistants in providing care to patients
- understanding the distribution of access deprivation - combining ecologic and individual predictors of poor access to health care
The timing of the fellowship will also provide the recipient with the opportunity to attend the 39th North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) Conference in Banff, Alberta (November 12-16, 2011) and the successful applicant is strongly encouraged to do this.
Funding
APHCRI is providing a maximum of AU $15,000 to support the initial phase of the initiative. It is expected that the APHCRI/Robert Graham Center Visiting Fellow would use this money to support travel, the time commitment, attendance at the NAPCRG meeting in Washington and incidental costs associated with the fellowship. The Robert Graham Center is providing a furnished corporate apartment in the heart of Washington, together with a stipend of US$650.

This scheme is a joint initiative of the Go8 and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Germany's national agency for the support of international academic co-operation.
Its chief aims are to:

Arthritis Australia offer grants valued between $10,000 and $50,000 for one year, to be used for research into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of arthritis. Awards are available to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals or recognised research institutes.
Project Grants & Grants in Aid
Grants are typically for short-term projects with well defined aims that can be achieved within a 12 month period. In some cases these grants address particular questions and may complement larger established programs of research. The amount allocated is generally in the range of $10,000 - $15,000 per grant for new investigator grants (defined as within 6 years of receiving their PhD). A maximum of four project grants valued up to $50,000 will be available, including grants focusing on specific arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
ARA Project Grant - $75,000
Two project grants ($50,000 & $25,000). These grants are available to members of the ARA who wish to come into research and aims to facilitate entry back into research. The track record of applicant is not a pre-requisite but the applicant will have to have an innovative, feasible and well designed research project undertaken in collaboration with an established research unit.
