CONFERENCE
23 - 24 November 2011
Mercure Hotel, 818 George Street
Sydney, Australia

This international conference (with workshops) is sponsored by the New South Wales Department of Attorney General and Justice in partnership with the Australian Institute of Criminology. Its aims are to provide participants with the latest methods and techniques to make better crime prevention decisions and to allocate resources effectively.

The analysis of crime using evidence-based methods is increasingly used worldwide in crime prevention. Economic and spatial crime mapping are two particular techniques that have become increasingly utilised to identify crime problems and as tools to monitor the effectiveness of interventions. These techniques, along with cost benefit and risk analysis, are also increasingly being applied to public security and policing as well as other Government policy areas such as transport, health and economic planning.

International Keynote Speakers

These interdisciplinary challenges will be explored by two expert workshops led by Dr Steve Aos, Director of the Washington State Institute of Public Policy, and Professor Patricia Brantingham, Director of the Canadian Institute for Urban Research Studies (ICURS) at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. Other sessions and Australian presenters will also discuss contemporary practice.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Contributions are invited from participants that possess knowledge and practice experience relevant to the conference program:

  • Techniques to map and cost the criminal justice process, and to identify policy efficiencies
  • Use and analysis of crime maps in the identification and monitoring of responses to crime problems
  • Estimating the benefits to the community when crime is prevented
  • Analysis of crime prevention interventions to determine the best strategies for a given investment

External Assessment Deadline
The final deadline for NHMRC Project Grant external assessments is 11 July 2011.  To ensure all applicants have a fair go during peer review, it is important all assessments are submitted to the NHMRC by this date.

Final Report Deadline
Due to complications with RGMS, the Final Reports deadline has been extended until Friday, 29 July, 2011.

Development Grants
The internal deadline for Development Grant applications is Monday, 11 July, 2011.  For a comprehensive review of your application, it should be submitted to Research Branch on or before this date.

2011 Project Grant – Response to Assessors
The NHMRC will be inviting researchers to respond to external assessments from mid-July to early August in three response periods based on GRP meeting dates.  The NHMRC have identified which applications will be available for response in each period and the list is available on the NHMRC website at http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/apply/projects/index.htm.  All CIA’s should have received an email from Research Branch notifying them which response period is relevant to their application.

We strongly encourage CIAs and their teams to make arrangements now so that they are able to provide a response within the specified period.  Whilst some timeframes may not be suitable for some applicants, there is no scope for NHMRC to provide alternative assessment periods due to the close timeframes between the rebuttal period and the start of the Grant Review Panels.
