Dairy Australia accepts applications for R&D projects from individuals and organisations worldwide. Applications are judged on the perceived benefits to the Australian dairy industry and potential for success. Proposals must address the following Core Objectives (as set out in the Dairy Australia Strategic Plan):

  • Increase farm productivity
  • Maintain and develop high margin markets, channels and products
  • Promote and protect the unique benefits of dairy

This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2011 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR)

2011 Project Grant – Response to Assessors
The NHMRC will be inviting researchers to respond to external assessments from mid-July to early August in three response periods based on GRP meeting dates.  The NHMRC have identified which applications will be available for response in each period and the list is available on the NHMRC website. All CIA’s should have received an email from Research Branch notifying them which response period is relevant to their application. 

We strongly encourage CIAs and their teams to make arrangements now so that they are able to provide a response within the specified period.  Whilst some timeframes may not be suitable for some applicants, there is no scope for NHMRC to provide alternative assessment periods due to the close timeframes between the rebuttal period and the start of the Grant Review Panels.

Effects of Secondhand Smoke on Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Disease Mechanisms (R01)
National Institutes of Health, invites applications that propose to better characterize the dose-response relationship between secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure and the cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases by improving our understanding of the mechanisms by which SHS contributes to these diseases.  The recent Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on “Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects: Making Sense of the Evidence” serves as the basis for this initiative.  A wide range of research including animal and human laboratory studies, cohort and case control studies, and natural experiments resulting from home, workplace, and/or community changes in SHS exposure are consistent with this initiative.

Obesity and Asthma: Awareness and Management (R01)
The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement issued by the National Institute of Nursing Research is to stimulate research to examine the interconnections of asthma and obesity. Studies that investigate the molecular pathways linking asthma and obesity are encouraged.  In addition, intervention studies targeting asthma or obesity and their effects on each one, and possible mechanisms of action are encouraged.

Blueprint for Neuroscience Research Grand Challenge on the Transition from Acute to Chronic Neuropathic Pain (R01)
The goal of this FOA is to facilitate research collaborations between pain scientists and neuroscientists with expertise in neuroplasticity who have not previously studied the pain system in order to expand the understanding of biological mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain. The expected outcome of this FOA will be the formation of partnerships between pain researchers and non-pain neuroscientists with expertise in neuroplasticity, to elucidate the maladaptive neuroplastic changes that occur during the transition from acute to chronic neuropathic pain.

Pathophysiology of HIV-Associated Neurodegeneration in Aging Populations on Long-Term Anti-Retroviral Therapy (R01)
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) invite research grant applications focused on elucidating the mechanisms of HIV-associated neuropathogenesis in the context of aging, chronic infection with HIV, and long term exposure to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). Understanding the pathogenesis of HAND in HIV-infected individuals over 50 years of age, in light of potential interactions with HAART, neurodegenerative diseases, and aging-related co-morbid conditions are the focus of this announcement.

The Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11) Defense Appropriations Act provides US $150 million to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) to support innovative, high-impact breast cancer research.

The BCRP is providing the information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications. FY11 BCRP program announcements and general application instructions for the following award mechanisms are anticipated to be posted on Grants.gov in late July 2011.


AWARD MECHANISMS

Clinical Translational Research Award
Supports the acceleration of research with a high potential for direct clinical translation that will result in significant improvements over current approaches to breast cancer prevention and/or therapy. Applications will be supported in two phases. Phase I will enable completion of preclinical translational studies and FDA approvals (if needed). Phase II will initiate and execute the clinical trial. Preliminary data is required.

Eligibility: Investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent)
Funding: Maximum of US $12M for up to 5 Years

 

Impact Award
Supports unique research projects that focus on scientific and clinical breast cancer issues, which, if successfully addressed, could ultimately revolutionalise the understanding, prevention, and/or treatment of breast cancer. Applications that focus on less explored or poorly understood areas that are of significant importance in breast cancer are strongly encouraged.

Eligibility: Investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent)
Funding: Maximum of US $2M for up to 5 years

The ASI invests in research and development (R&D) to accelerate innovation in photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar thermal (CST) technologies that have the future potential to significantly reduce the levelised cost of solar energy, compared to existing stationary electricity generation.

Projects may be industry-led (research-provider supported), research-provider led (industry supported), or research-provider only, noting that collaboration is encouraged and forms part of the assessment criteria.


ASI Round 3 Priorities
Specific focus areas for Round 3 are as follows:

  • Storage and hybrid technologies with the potential to increase commercial deployment of CSP (e.g. hybrid solar / diesel power systems)

  • Reducing CSP field costs

  • Pilot demonstration of prospective CSP technologies

 

State and Territory contributions
The ASI is working with the governments of the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia to identify and support meritorious projects in those jurisdictions that match either an ASI or state or territory government priority area. Applicants are encouraged to contact the ASI or their state or territory government regarding potential project co-funding. As with all ASI funding rounds, co-funding from industry and state and territory governments will be regarded favourably.

Funding
The maximum level of ASI funding for any individual Round 3 Project will be $5,000,000. Within these boundaries, the amount of funding to be released is at the discretion of the ASI Board. Round 3 applicants should note that the ASI has up to $20 million of uncommitted funds remaining for solar R&D projects and enabling research outside the USASEC initiative.

The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) provides national leadership in improving the quality and effectiveness of primary health care through the conduct of high quality, priority-driven research and the support and promotion of best practice.

As a part of its 2011 Stream Funding, the Institute is now offering grants for up to six projects, to provide evidence on how primary care for vulnerable consumers can be consumer centred, best delivered, and coordinated.

APHCRI seeks to commission research where applicants will answer preferably no more than two of the following questions:

  • How do people from vulnerable groups, as identified by the definition above, access primary health care?

  • How do people from vulnerable groups establish and maintain their care networks?

  • What models are most effective in delivering coordinated primary care to people from vulnerable groups?

  • What strategies for providing coordinated care across sectors (within health, and between health and other agencies) have been successful in providing care for people from vulnerable groups?

  • How can local health planning incorporate the needs of people from vulnerable groups?

  • How can health care providers engage and encourage people from vulnerable groups in managing their health care?

  • What is the role of e-health in the care of vulnerable groups?


Funding

Each of the Coordination and the Vulnerable Consumer Health Care Research Streams will be eligible to receive up to $150,000. Applicants based in rural locations may be eligible for additional funding of up to $25,000.

The timeframes will be set in the contract for successful applicants and the research project is set for an eighteen month period.

The following schemes are currently available:


Project Grants
Funding: up to $100,000 p.a. for a maximum of 3 years.
Must include the salary of the applicant and/or research assistant, on-costs, maintenance, equipment and all other costs.

To be eligible, research must be conducted in an Australian or New Zealand university, teaching hospital, or research institute.

Grants-In-Aid
Up to $50,000 p.a. for a maximum of 2 years.
Grants are restricted to equipment and maintenance.

Otolaryngologists, or trainees in the specialty, who are in possession of the first part of the FRACS are eligible to apply.

A Development Grant provides funding support to individual researchers, research teams, or a HMR company in partnership with a researcher/s to undertake research at the early proof-of-principle or pre-seed stage.


The Scheme supports the commercial development of a product, process, procedure or service that if applied, would result in improved health care, disease prevention or provide health cost savings.


Applications must demonstrate a basic understanding of the process and steps required to move from research to outcomes that can be commercialised, including:

  • the process and steps to a market, the nature of the market;
  • the milestones and risks of the venture; and
  • an understanding of possible means of handling intellectual property connected with the project.

This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2011 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

The Holsworth Wildlife Research Endowment invites applications for post-graduate student research support in ecology, wildlife management and natural history studies. Preference will be given to students at an early stage of a Masters or Doctoral program. Honours projects will normally not be supported.

The Cotton Research & Development Corporation (CRDC) is calling for new research investment proposals. Investments by industry address three strategic areas.

CRDC invests in a wide range of research and development projects aimed at enhancing the environmental, economic and social performance of the Australian cotton industry.

The Native Vegetation Research Grants are established under the Native Vegetation Act 1991 to facilitate research into the preservation, enhancement and management of native vegetation in South Australia. The Native Vegetation Council manages the Native Vegetation Fund and has an annual program of grants to support research activities related to native vegetation conservation.

While the Council is willing to consider research proposals that will enhance our knowledge regarding the conservation and management of native vegetation in South Australia, it assesses applications against the following criteria:

  • outcomes that inform and assist in the development of native vegetation policy by the Council 
  • outcomes leading to improved management of native vegetation and/or conservation status of species or communities
  • specific recommendations aimed at improving some aspect of habitat or biodiversity conservation.

Funding is available for biodiversity projects that will assist in conservation, restoration and management of native vegetation in South Australia.

Please note
This program supports research. Projects seeking on ground restoration works will not be funded through this program.

Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC) announces its call for researchers to submit new research, development and extension (RD&E) proposals for activities commencing from 1 July 2012.For projects commencing from July 2012

Priority will be given to projects which contribute to changes in sustainable productivity in sugarcane growing, harvesting and/or milling as outlined in the National Sugarcane Industry Research, Development and Extension Strategy.

Industry goals identified in the National Sugarcane Industry RD&E strategy include:

  • A growth industry, successfully competing in the world market, through profitable businesses
  • Successful diversification into related sugarcane products, using world class research and development
  • Global leaders in environmental sustainability
  • Dynamic and cooperative industry leadership


Research themes:
In this funding round, higher weighting will be given to the first four research themes listed (not in priority order), however applications addressing any of these ten themes will be considered.

The Criminology Research Fund derives its income from an annual contribution from the Australian Government and each of the state and territory Governments.

The Council is empowered by section 47(1) of the Criminology Research Act 1971 to make grants for:

"...such purposes of, or related to, criminological research (including the dissemination of information and advice and the publication of reports, periodicals, books and papers in connection with criminological research and the results of criminological research) as are determined by the Council."

The term criminological research is defined in the Act to mean research in connection with:

  • the causes, correction and prevention of criminal behaviour, and
  • any related matter

The Australian Academy of Science invites Expressions of Interest from junior scientists who are no more than 30 years of age at the time of application, to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States of America. 


Eligibility
Proposals in any health-related field of natural science will be considered.  Only Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia living in Australia at the time of application are eligible to apply. At the time of application, applicants should be either:

  • in the first two years of a PhD degree or equivalent, or
  • have completed a Masters or a Bachelors with Honours degree, or
  • be in the first semester of a Masters of a Bachelors with Honours degree

Under this scheme applicants are expected to be undertaking PhD study in an Australian institution or intend to enrol in PhD study in an Australian institution.  Applicants can request travel support to access the international leading-edge research facilities and staff of the NIH.  The proposed visit should initiate long-term collaborations and facilitate the development of the applicant’s career.

The Early Investigator Synergistic Idea Award supports collaborations between two independent investigators early in their careers who address an innovative and high impact lung cancer research question from synergistic and complementary perspectives. This award is designed specifically to promote collaborations between a clinician and laboratory scientist.

Areas of Emphasis: The FY11 LCRP only accepts Early Investigator Synergistic Idea Award applications that address at least one of the seven Areas of Emphasis listed below:

  • Identification or development of non-invasive or minimally invasive tools to improve the detection of the initial stages of lung cancer

  • Identification and development of new tools and/or building upon already existing tools for screening or early detection of lung cancer. Screening may include, but is not limited to, computed tomography scans, X-rays, other imaging biomarkers, genetics/ genomics/proteomics, and assessment of risk factors.

  • Understanding the molecular mechanisms that lead to clinically significant lung cancer

  • Identification of the mechanisms that lead to the development of the various types of lung cancer

  • Identification of innovative strategies for prevention and treatment of early lung cancer

  • Understanding predictive and prognostic markers to identify responders and non-responders

  • Understanding acquired resistance to treatment.

The Early Investigator Synergistic Idea Award requires that two investigators jointly design a single project. However, each partner will be recognized as a PI, submit a separate application, and receive an individual award.

The LCRP Investigator-Initiated Translational Research Award supports translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and aggression.

Highest priority is given to research that can increase understanding and amelioration of urgent problems of violence and aggression in the modern world.


Funding
Most awards fall within the range of US$15,000 to $40,000 per year for periods of one or two years. Applications for larger amounts and longer durations must be very strongly justified.


Eligibility
Applicants for a research grant may be citizens of any country. While almost all recipients of our research grant possess a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, there are no formal degree requirements for the grant. The Foundation for High Blood Pressure offers a two-year postdoctoral fellowship for a research project in hypertension or related fields in basic, clinical or public health areas at an Australian institution. Applications from biomedical, clinical and public health researchers are invited.


Eligibility
The Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship is open to Australian citizens or permanent residents, for a project at an Australian research institution. Applicants must have had not less than five years and no more than ten years post-PhD research experience (excluding time out for, for example, family reasons).  The research project will be in hypertension or a related field in basic, clinical or public health areas.


Funding
Payment is made to the employing institution at an amount to cover salary, salary support costs and approximately $10,000 per annum research support.  In 2012 the amount paid to the employing institution will be $105,000.

The Garnett Passe and Rodney Williams Memorial Foundation currently offers Research Scholarships, Research Training Fellowships, and an Overseas Research Fellowship, in otorhinolaryngology or related fields of biomedical science, to commence in 2012.

Accommodation, cost of living, maintenance and travel allowances will also be provided, with once-only minimum-cost airfares for the successful applicant and their dependants to cover direct travel to, and return from, the overseas institution.

Duration:  One term of four years (first two years to be spent overseas, subsequent two years to be spent in Australia or New Zealand).
Eligibility:  Outstanding researchers, who are either medically qualified or science graduates with no more than six years total postdoctoral research experience are eligible to apply.

For researchers who hold a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree and have completed at least two years of clinical haematology, oncology, haematology/oncology, haematopathologytraining or postdoctoral research training in a clinical discipline (such as cytogenetics or molecular pathology). Must show evidence that career focus will be on preventing, diagnosing or treating leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.

 

Fellow

For promising investigators with less than two years of postdoctoral research training. This award encourages emerging researchers to embark on an academic career involving clinical or fundamental research in, or related to, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma under a research sponsor's direction.

The PRCRP Visionary Postdoctoral Fellowship Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY11. To support the future generation of cancer research, this award offers opportunity for a candidate postdoctoral fellow to collaborate with an early career investigator mentor(s) in one or more of the FY11 PRCRP Topic Areas.

Important aspects of the Visionary Postdoctoral Fellowship Award are as follows:

Impact
The proposed research should have a significant impact on the concepts or methods that are likely to accelerate the movement of promising cancer research into clinical applications. Correlative clinical research studies are allowed under this mechanism; however, clinical trials are not permitted.

Innovation
Research deemed innovative may examine a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, or look at existing problems from new perspectives. Research may also be innovative in study concept, research methods or technology, or adaptations of existing methods or technologies.

Relevance to Military Beneficiaries
The proposed research should address cancer research that is relevant to military beneficiaries (service members and their families, veterans and their dependents).


Funding
Up to 3 years with maximum allowable direct costs of up to US $240,000 plus indirect costs.


Eligibility
The PI must, by the time of application submission deadline:

  • Have successfully defended a doctoral thesis or possess an M.D. degree , and

Funding from the SIEF is being made available to engage Postdoctoral Fellows in research projects with the highest potential for scientific achievement and benefits to Australia. Research projects in which Postdoctoral Fellows are to be engaged will preferably be collaborative projects between Australian publicly funded research agencies and an Australian University and/or industry collaborators.

In 2012, six John Stocker Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded in the fields of ICT, mathematics and engineering and/or the priority research areas of:

  • Astronomy / Astrophysics
  • Combinatorial Materials Science
  • Environmental Informatics
  • Exploration Geoscience
  • Genomics / Epigenomics
  • Mathematics and Network Science


Funding
A grant of $92,000 per annum for three years for each proposal chosen will be awarded to the Administering Lead Organisation as a contribution towards the salary and on-costs of a Postdoctoral Fellow.


Eligibility
The Fellow must meet the following criteria:

  • awarded (or shortly to be awarded) a PhD degree in a discipline related to the Project

  • eligible to work in Australia

  • on completion of the Fellowship, the candidate’s total relevant work experience since confirmation of the candidate’s doctorate does not exceed six full-time equivalent years

  • available to commence role prior to 30 June 2012

  • be offered employment by the Lead Organisation as a designated post-doctoral fellow for a period of not more than three years full-time

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from professional scientists to collaborate with researchers in institutes affiliated with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2013. The proposed visit should initiate or consolidate long-term collaborations and facilitate the development of the applicant's career. Applicants are required to propose a collaborative research project, or a specific activity, which has been developed in consultation with host scientists in Japan.


Eligibility

  • Proposals in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science will be considered.
  • Applicants must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident living in Australia at the time of submitting the grant application.
  • Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent at the time of application.
  • Support will not be given when the primary purpose of the visit is to attend a conference.

Preference will be given to visits which are short-term and highly-focused. The grant scheme is not to supplement or extend either study or sabbatical leave that is being conducted overseas.


Funding & support
Successful applicants will receive from the Academy a grant in aid towards an international economy class airfare, from Australia to the international airport closest to the host institute in Japan. The Academy will also provide participants with a travel allowance (for ground transportation and internal flights allowance) (up to the value of $500).

JSPS will provide participants with allowances for living and travelling in Japan.  The duration of the visit must be for a minimum of 14 days and a maximum of 28 days. This program does not provide funds for bench fees, managerial, insurance or visa costs.

The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) provides national leadership in improving the quality and effectiveness of primary health care through the conduct of high quality, priority-driven research and the support and promotion of best practice.

As a part of its 2011 Stream Funding, the Institute is now offering grants for up to six projects, to provide evidence on how primary care for vulnerable consumers can be consumer centred, best delivered, and coordinated.

APHCRI seeks to commission research where applicants will answer preferably no more than two of the following questions:

  • How do people from vulnerable groups, as identified by the definition above, access primary health care?

  • How do people from vulnerable groups establish and maintain their care networks?

  • What models are most effective in delivering coordinated primary care to people from vulnerable groups?

  • What strategies for providing coordinated care across sectors (within health, and between health and other agencies) have been successful in providing care for people from vulnerable groups?

  • How can local health planning incorporate the needs of people from vulnerable groups?

  • How can health care providers engage and encourage people from vulnerable groups in managing their health care?

  • What is the role of e-health in the care of vulnerable groups?


Funding

Each of the Coordination and the Vulnerable Consumer Health Care Research Streams will be eligible to receive up to $150,000. Applicants based in rural locations may be eligible for additional funding of up to $25,000.

The timeframes will be set in the contract for successful applicants and the research project is set for an eighteen month period.

JDRF offers travel grants to early-stage researchers throughout Australia in order to strengthen the knowledge of type 1 diabetes amongst the research community. The grants are valued at up to $2,000 for domestic travel or $4,000 for international travel to research institutions or scientific meetings, for the purpose of furthering the researcher's expertise in the study of type 1 diabetes.

Eligible candidates for both forms of Travel Grants will be:

  • Medical or science graduates who are undertaking type 1 diabetes research
  • Researchers in the early stage of their career (e.g. PhD students or not more than 5 years post-doctoral)

OR

  • Allied health or nursing professionals undertaking work or research impacting on the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their carers and families; or
  • Allied health or nursing students, enrolled in a post graduate program, whose work/research will impact on the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their carers and families

The Nature Foundation SA Inc is a non-profit body which raises funds to conserve and sustain South Australia's natural biodiversity. Since its inception, NFSA has raised many millions of dollars for on-the-ground projects, land conservation, education programs and vital research.


Nature Foundation is now inviting and encouraging applications for a Research Project Grant from researchers wishing to undertake projects in areas pertinent to the Foundation's interests. Projects could involve applied research, awards, prizes, scholarships, minor works in parks, wildlife publications or similar.

Project grant funding is available across the following categories:

General Conservation Research
Funding: up to $10,000.

Community Education and Awards
Funding: $11,000
Available to any education-based program involving the interlinking of conservation and science.

Linkage Grants
Funding: $10,000
Designed to provide leverage to attract Commonwealth Government funding. The committee will assess any grant applications and determine at its discretion the size of suitable grants.

Nature Foundation may consider a reallocation between these categories if a sufficient number or quality of grant requests is not received within a specific category.

This Fellowship is jointly sponsored by the AGA and the Goethe-Institut. This annual Fellowship supports a young Australian to visit Germany to study the language and pursue special interest. Prospective candidates should have excellent academic tertiary qualifications and the prospect of a promising career in business, law, science, political studies or arts.

The Fellowship covers a period of twelve weeks at a mutually agreed time. The chosen candidate will attend a German language course for eight weeks. The specific location of the course will be advised by the Goethe-Institut.

The chosen candidate must have a good working knowledge of the German language (level B1 or higher) and is expected to spend the remaining four weeks of his/her time in Germany researching a topic of particular interest to the candidate.

The Fellowship provides for:

  • 12 weeks in Germany
  • eight weeks intensive language and cultural study with full accommodation and breakfast and one meal on course days
  • AU$2,500 allowance towards a return economy airfare
  • AU $6,000 allowance to facilitate travel throughout Germany
  • general advice on itinerary

Where possible AGA will facilitate entry to areas of particular interest to the awardee, however candidates should ensure that their project does not assume that such entries will be available

This Fellowship is open to Australian citizens only. Australian-German citizens are not eligible to apply.

Investigator-Initiated Research Award

The NFRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award supports basic and clinically oriented research that will:

  • Provide insight into the development of NF and Schwannomatosis
  • Result in substantial improvements to the diagnosis and treatment of NF and/or Schwannomatosis
  • Have an impact on the quality of life of persons with those diseases

This award encourages research applications that specifically address the following areas:

  • Complications of NF with high mortality such as neoplasms and cerebrovascular abnormalities
  • Complications of NF with high morbidity such as skeletal maladies, learning deficits, hormone-associated effects, and pain
  • Refinement and standardization of imaging techniques, molecular and cellular markers, and quality of life metrics for use in future clinical trials
  • Translational research such as the development or preclinical testing of therapeutic agents for the treatment of NF

However, Principal Investigators (PIs) with a limited background in NF research are strongly encouraged to have a collaborator who is experienced in the NF field. New Investigator Award applications must include preliminary data that is relevant to NF and/or Schwannomatosis and the proposed project.

 

Postdoctoral Traineeship Award

The intent of the training award is to enable recent medical or other doctoral degree graduates to obtain the necessary experience to pursue an independent career in NF research. Candidates for this award must demonstrate a strong desire to pursue a career in NF research.

Under this award mechanism, the postdoctoral trainee is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) and, as such, should write the project narrative with appropriate direction from the mentor. The focus of these awards is on the PI, the mentor, and the training program and environment. These awards primarily provide salary support for the PI and require the active involvement of a designated mentor who is an established NF researcher, as evidenced by a demonstrated record of past and/or current funding and publications. While the PI is not required to have previous experience in NF research, applications for this award must focus on NF research.

  • Pharmacological interventions

  • behavioural interventions specifically for school-age children, adolescents, or adults
  • Treatment of co-morbid conditions in school-age children, adolescents, or adults

The ARP Clinical Trial Award supports research with the potential to have a major impact on the treatment and/or management of ASD. Funding from this award mechanism must support a clinical trial and cannot be used for preclinical research studies.


Idea Development Award

The Idea Development Award seeks applications from all areas of basic and preclinical research. The FY11 ARP Idea Development Award encourages applications that address the critical needs of the ASD community in the following areas:

  • Studies that lead to improved subgrouping of individuals with ASD to inform on the mechanisms, natural history, and response to treatment. For example:
    • Biomarkers
    • Risk factors including, but not limited to, perinatal, infectious, and environmental exposures, and gene-environment interactions
    • Co-morbid medical and behavioural conditions
    • Sex ratio (biological basis for male bias in autism spectrum disorders)

  • Identification of therapeutic targets, excluding new gene discovery
  • Studies that leverage existing biological samples, clinical populations, and databases to provide statistical power to test ideas
  • Studies that address co-morbid conditions in school-age children, adolescents, and adults

  • Multidisciplinary studies that involve collaborations between investigators with distinct expertise. For example:
    • Special education
    • Biomedical science
    • Clinicians

The ARP Idea Development Award supports the development of innovative, high-impact ideas that advance the understanding of ASD and that ultimately will lead to improved outcomes for individuals with autism.


Pilot Award

The ARP Pilot Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY11. The ARP Pilot Award supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ASD forward. Research projects should include a testable hypothesis based on a strong scientific rationale.

This award is not intended to support the continuation of existing studies or the next logical extension and/or incremental step. The Pilot Award emphasises untested, novel, innovative, and potentially groundbreaking concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods. The award is designed to provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations that may reveal entirely new avenues for investigation.

Postdoctoral Training Fellowship
The purpose of the Postdoctoral Training Fellowships is to provide outstanding researchers who have recently completed a PhD with support to pursue their breast cancer research interests and increase their research capability. The overall aim is to attract, train and retain our most talented breast cancer researchers of the future. At the time of application the applicant must have no more than five years postdoctoral experience.

Postdoctoral Training Fellowships are available for up to four years at $90,000 p.a. including salary stipend, oncosts and some research-related expense. This year (2011) we are delighted to announce our partnership with Cure Cancer Australia Foundation (CCAF) who will contribute $90,000 for the first year of each fellowship.




Early Career Fellowship

The Early Career Fellowship will support the salary and research of outstanding new investigators with a vision to expand the scale and scope of breast cancer research in Australia. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their potential to develop high performing teams that will produce high quality research outcomes.

The specific aims of the scheme are to:

  • Develop the most outstanding and creative breast cancer researchers across the range of disciplines in biomedical, clinical, health services and public health research
  • Foster mentoring and collaboration of talented early career researchers, and facilitate integration of these new investigators into successful research teams
  • Enhance quality and foster expansion of the scale and scope of breast cancer research in Australia
  • Carry out research that is of major importance and with the potential to impact on breast cancer outcomes

The purpose of the GESA Senior Research Fellowship is to provide an opportunity for outstanding biomedical and health researchers with proven track records to undertake research that is of major importance in the broad field of gastroenterology, hepatology or related disorders.

The purpose of this award is to provide funding to travel from Australia for the purpose of study for a minimum period of three months. Studies should be for development of new skills applicable to research into gastrointestinal diseases and sciences.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme aims to encourage talented young students, medical graduates and researchers to pursue a career in basic, applied, or translational research, to find cures and better ways to care for patients and families living with haematological malignancies.

Candidates must have been awarded their PhD no more than three years prior to the closing date for applications or else their PhD must be awarded by December of the year of application.

Postdoctoral fellowships will initially be awarded for one year, with an award of up to $100, 000 per annum.

This Fellowship is open to researchers based in eligible Australian institutions to pursue research into nutritional and/or lifestyle aspects of Macular Degeneration, consistent with the mission of the Foundation to reduce the incidence and impact of MD.

In 2012 the Foundation will provide a Research Fellowship of AU$40,000. It is a requirement that the Fellowship will be matched or bettered by the Applicant’s host institution. Fellowships are fulltime for 12 months, however the recipient can apply for further Fellowships in following years.

Eligibilty

  • Applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents or, if relevant, be eligible for permanent residency on completion of their studies being undertaken in an Australian university. If the latter, research cannot begin until evidence of Permanent Residency has been supplied

  • The Blackmores Dr Paul Beaumont Research Fellow must be based in Australia for the duration of the grant

  • Researchers working in any field of research relevant to Macular Degeneration are eligible to apply, however the research must relate to the effects of nutrition and/or lifestyle and Macular Degeneration

  • Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent. Applicants nearing the end of their PhD are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship funds will not be made available until evidence of PhD acceptance has been provided to the Foundation

The objective of the Macular Degeneration Foundation Research Grant is to facilitate and expedite substantial bio-medical or psychosocial research that is likely to produce significant outcomes in reducing the impact and/or incidence of Macular Degeneration.

In 2012, the Foundation intends to make available a grant, or grants, of up to $250,000 per year for a maximum of three years, for research commencing no later than June 30 2012.

Funding

Eligible Publications
The AAH gives priority to works that require a subsidy for their viability as a publishing venture, or for the inclusion of essential items such as illustrations, photographs or maps. Support may, in some cases, be given for meritorious publications with some prospect of small-scale royalty and profit returns.

Works with clear commercial prospects, however, will not be supported by the AAH. Although the scheme is generally intended for conventional, hardcopy publications, the AAH will consider applications for subsidy support of online works.

Applications from researchers of South African history are particularly welcome; however, researchers with other areas of geographical interest are also encouraged to apply.

Specific types of sleep education research grants supported by this programme could include innovative educational approaches designed to:

The National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre invites research proposals that address priority issues relating to productive ageing.  Two or more innovative projects will be funded that have clear outcomes and benefits for seniors and the general public. NSPAC encourages applications both from academic researchers and researchers involved with community groups and/or organisations that have a focus on ageing and older persons.

Funded research will challenge the view of ageing as a time of decline and dependency and help build a strong evidence base for productive ageing. Topics of particular interest to the NSPAC for this grant round include:

  • financial literacy among older persons
  • intergenerational support provided by older people
  • the use of new technologies in older age to encourage healthy and productive ageing

The International Myeloma Foundation funds several research grants including the Brian D. Novis Research Award. These awards go to doctors/researchers doing work in the field of multiple myeloma. Funding is awarded in both Junior and Senior grant categories.


Junior Research Award
Funding: US$50,000

Proposals considered most favourable are those that provide evidence of an applicant's research initiative and creativity. The Selection Committee will also weigh the previous accomplishments of the applicant, the probability of meaningful results from the proposed research, and the likely contribution of the research to the advancement of our knowledge of myeloma etiology, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention.

Candidate must also have:

  • completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships no later than August 1 of the application year

  • the ability to devote a minimum of 50% of his or her time to the research project during the Award year


Senior Research Award
Funding: US $80,000

These awards are targeted towards established investigators with a track record in myeloma or related research, and are designed for projects which represent a different focus, direction or area of research from those in which they are currently funded.  In most cases, these awards will be for pilot projects to obtain sufficient funding for larger applications from NIH or similar larger funding agencies.

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation welcomes proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and aggression.

The Cotton Research & Development Corporation (CRDC) is calling for new research investment proposals. Investments by industry address three strategic areas.

CRDC invests in a wide range of research and development projects aimed at enhancing the environmental, economic and social performance of the Australian cotton industry.

Multidisciplinary

 

The Marine National Facility (MNF) supports research in Australia's regional seas and oceans and is available to Australian marine researchers and their international collaborators through an independent and peer reviewed applications process.

To facilitate forward planning, the MNF is following the recent call for applications on RV Southern Surveyor in 2012-2013 with a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for research voyages on the new vessel RV Investigator for the financial years 2013-2014 (the commissioning year) and 2014-2015.

The level of detail required for an EOI is less onerous than that required for a normal application for sea time and multiple EOIs will be accepted from a marine researcher.

Supporting a scientific contingent of 40 people, RV Investigator will be a larger and more capable research vessel than RV Southern Surveyor. Operating from the tropics to the Antarctic ice edge, and capable of voyages up to 55 days duration, RV Investigator will support multi-disciplinary marine research projects in:

  • physical, chemical and biological oceanography
  • marine geosciences
  • fisheries
  • meteorology
  • environmental science
