Gene-Environment Interplay in Substance Use Disorders (R03, & R21)
The National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism seek to stimulate and expand research on the interplay of genetic and environmental factors in the genesis, course, and outcomes of substance and alcohol use disorders (SUDs). Previous work in genetic epidemiology and molecular genetics has established that SUDs are highly heritable, developmental disorders with important genetic substrates. Building on these findings, new studies using genetically informative approaches are needed to elucidate the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors in developmental trajectories of SUDs and comorbid conditions, deepen and refine phenotypic definitions of SUDs, and meet the methodological challenges of the field

Mechanistic Studies of Pain and Alcohol Dependence (R21)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications that propose to conduct mechanistic studies on the relationship between alcohol drinking, alcohol dependence and pain. Pain transmission and alcohol’s reinforcing effects share overlapping neural substrates giving rise to the possibility that chronic pain states significantly affect alcohol use patterns and promote the development of dependence and addiction. In addition, long term alcohol intoxication and alcohol dependence induce pain symptoms and may exacerbate chronic pain arising from other sources. The objective of this FOA is to understand genetic, pharmacological and learning mechanisms underlying the association between the propensity to drink alcohol and pain responses.

The ASI is seeking highly meritorious projects to fund as Australia-Germany Collaborative Solar R&D Projects pursuant to its Memoranda of Understanding with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. V. (Fraunhofer Institute) and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) respectively.
The ASI will support solar R&D projects that are technically “excellent”, that demonstrate significant and quantifiable collaboration with the identified German research institutes and that will lead to increased commercial deployment of PV and CSP technologies: whether that commercial deployment is in the short, medium or long term.
Projects may be industry-led (research-provider supported), research-provider led (industry supported), or research-provider only, noting that the nature and depth of collaboration with one or more German research institutes, including committed contributions, is assessed as a key merit criterion.
Funding
The maximum amount of ASI funding for any individual Australia-Germany Collaborative Solar R&D Project will be AUD $500,000.
Eligibility
Applicants for Australia-Germany Collaborative Solar R&D Project funding must demonstrate collaboration with one or more German research institutes, including but not limited to those with which the ASI has an institutional linkage, as an essential pre-condition to consideration by the ASI of funding support for their proposed project. Further, applicants must demonstrate a quantifiable commitment to their proposed project from their collaborating German institute(s) and/or a German funding body.
Due date
There is no closing date for applications for Australia-Germany Collaborative Solar R&D Project funding. Applications will be reviewed by the ASI’s Research Advisory Committee (RAC) at regular intervals.

The Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) National Taxonomy Research Grant Program provides grants for taxonomic research. Grants are awarded for research projects where the primary aim is to undertake taxonomic research on the Australian biota or to develop products that aid in the dissemination of taxonomic information. The program also supports projects that build Australian taxonomic capacity.
Priority Areas 2012-2013
Projects funded under the National Taxonomy Research Grant Program must be public good in focus and support the Australian Government’s National Research Priorities. Within the National Research Priorities, the following specific criteria will be used by the ABRS to determine whether a project is eligible for an ABRS grant.
- Biodiversity, Conservation and Vulnerable and Endangered Species
- Public, Plant and Animal Health
- Building Taxonomic Capacity
Types of Award
Research & Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants
The ABRS offers 3-year Research and Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants where the researcher’s primary aim is to undertake taxonomic research on the Australian biota or to develop products that aid in the dissemination of taxonomic information
All Research & Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants have a co-funding requirement. Applicants must have obtained a commitment for the applicable amount of co-funding for their application to be considered. Salary may be included as co-funding, however, in an instance where two projects are of equal scientific merit but one has salary co-funding and the other cash co-funding, the project with cash co-funding will be ranked higher. In-kind contributions will be recognised but will not replace the requirement for additional co-funding input.
Please refer to the Application Form & Guidelines:
http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/abrs/funding-and-research/research-grants/index.html
Capacity Building Grants
The ABRS offers Capacity-Building Grants in the form of Honours and Masters scholarships as well as more Ph.D. awards. In addition, non-salaried researcher grants are offered on an annual basis to allow the completion of projects by non-salaried researchers. A particular priority for these grants is to capture knowledge from senior, retired professionals and allow mentoring of junior researchers.
The ABRS is offering applicants starting a Ph.D. on an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) in 2012 the opportunity to top up the existing APA rate ($22 860 in 2011) by $10 000 per year. The Ph.D. research project of applicants must be focused on taxonomy or systematics analysis and address the ABRS Research Priorities. At least $5 000 of the Top-Up must be used to supplement research costs, with up to $5 000 of the Top-Up used to supplement living costs.
Please refer to the Application Form & Guidelines:
http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/abrs/funding-and-research/capacity-grants/index.html
Bush Blitz PhD Research Supplements
In addition to the above grants, the ABRS is offering Bush Blitz Research Supplements to Ph.D students. The Supplement provides an additional $10,000 research support for a project requiring taxonomy or systematics that can be linked to Bush Blitz. The award also gives the student an opportunity to attend one Bush Blitz survey. Grants awarded will be of one year duration. Applicants must have at least one year remaining on their existing PhD. projects.
Please refer to the Application Form & Guidelines:
