SEMINAR
15 December 2011
7.45am
- 9.30am

Ayers House
288 North Terrace, Adelaide, SA

Presented by eResearch SA

Bright Ideas Over Breakfast: Connecting Collections will feature a presentation from Dr Christine Garnaut, Director of the Architecture Museum in the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of South Australia, and will be followed by a champagne networking opportunity.

The Architecture Museum houses a research collection of over 200,000 paper items, books and other publications, donated by private practitioners, which represent diverse aspects of South Australia’s (and Australia's) architectural and wider built environment history. To keep this rich and extensive collection fresh, the Architecture Museum has looked to technology to best utilise and present the items in the collection.

In 2010 the Museum was successful in securing Australian National Data Service (ANDS) funding, and in 2011 Christine was involved in eResearch SA’s summer scholarship program where she supervised a digital visualisation project - the result providing a practical example of how researchers can use digital technologies to bring to life the items in their collections.

Christine’s presentation will focus on her own experience, including how she came to engage with eResearch technologies, and how they now support her research. She will discuss how other humanities and social science researchers might become involved with digital technologies, making this event a must see for anyone who works with collections, analyses or manages data, collaborates with distant colleagues, is grappling with the technical challenges arising from the ‘data deluge’, or is just interested in finding out more.

If you would like to register for this event, please visit:

The SA Grain Industry Trust (SAGIT or the Trust) has established funds for research, development, and extension into the growing, harvesting, storage, processing and marketing of grain in SA, in order to increase profitability and sustainability of the grains industry.

Research Funding
Research Projects typically run for several months to a maximum of three years, reviewed annually. Preference will be given to projects which meet the following criteria:

  • Major emphasis on benefit to SA farmers

  • Most work will be conducted in SA, but this does not exclude outside activities of benefit to SA.

  • Applications should outline the issue being addressed, why it is important to farmers, the key questions, a brief summary of work done to date by the applicant and others, and why the approach has potential to succeed.

  • Without losing sight of innovative research, emphasis will be on more immediate outcomes for farmers through development and adaptation of research, and extension.

  • Greater emphasis will be placed on the impacts of the work on the farm system and business (rather than just science per se), and on the path to market for project outcomes both at the time of application, during the project and in the final evaluation.

  • Opportunities for synergies and on leveraging through partnerships with other funding sources and industry.

  • Emphasis on project evaluation, especially in terms of real or potential farmer benefit and how the adoption of the results will be measured.

  • Commercial and IP revenues are an important consideration but not the main driver.

SAGIT will look favourably on projects where the applicant has shown initiative in identifying potential opportunities for cooperative funding arrangements.

Capital Item Application
SAGIT will usually only consider funding Capital Items as a part of a Project, however in exceptional circumstances Capital Item Only Applications will be considered. The relevant form can be downloaded from www.sagit.com.au

Travel Application
SAGIT will usually only fund Travel as a part of a larger project, unless there is a demonstrable benefit to the SA Grains Industry.  The relevant form can be downloaded from www.sagit.com.au.
The call for travel applications occurs at the same time as capital and new applications and follows the same guidelines.

The Field Naturalists Society of South Australia Inc. (FNSSA) established the Lirabenda Endowment Fund (LEF) with the intention of making available research grants to encourage and promote research into the biota and natural environment of South Australia.

The Lirabenda Research Grants Committee considers all applications for grants from the Lirabenda Endowment Fund with this intention in mind. The following are general guidelines to provide applicants with information on projects that the Lirabenda Endowment Fund is likely to support:

  • Projects that increase knowledge and understanding of native species and their habitats

  • Projects relating to management and conservation of South Australian species and their environment

  • Projects that investigate factors relating to declining or threatened species of plants and animals. Preference is given to species that are endemic to South Australia

  • Projects leading to improved management of species that cause environmental damage in South Australia

Duration & Funding
Lirabenda Endowment Fund grants are for one year only. If the research proposed is part of a larger study the applicant must describe a project with a one-year time-frame.
