Co-hosted in 2012 with TAFE SA, the 21st staging of NCVER’s popular National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference ‘No Frills’ in Adelaide.
The conference is a key part of NCVER’s commitment to dissemination of research and building research capacity. It will be free to attend with delegates to cover the cost of any special events attended, catering and their own travel and accommodation. NCVER invites practitioners and researchers to share their research and knowledge at the 21st National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference. NCVER seeks presentations that rely on sound evidence-based research rather than descriptive or opinion-based work. This can be presented in one of the following ways:
- Professional development workshops
- Presentations
- Refereed Papers
The conference will be held at TAFE SA’s Adelaide Campus (120 Currie Street) and Adelaide College of the Arts Campus
(39 Light Square) in the heart of the Adelaide CBD.

Information sessions will last approximately three hours
The CRC Program Information Sessions will be of particular interest for those submitting applications in the 15th selection round, and will be conducted in conjunction with the relevant state or territory government department. Representatives from those organisations may be available to discuss support programs they can provide for CRCs as well as other relevant innovation programs.
There will also be an opportunity for potential consortia to meet with the departmental representatives in the afternoon of the scheduled information session. Prospective applicants who are not able to attend an information session and would like to meet with the department should contact the CRC program at the details below.

Minister Plibersek has announced a Call for an Investigator Team for the first Centre under NHMRC’s new Partnership Centres for Better Health program.
This program is designed to increase the availability and use of research and researchers for the organisations involved in delivering, managing or making policy for health and health care.
The first Centre will receive up to $25 million over five years from NHMRC and its funding partners: Alzheimer’s Australia, Hammond Care, Helping Hand Aged Care and Brightwater Care Group.
The Investigator Team selected from the call will work with the partners to develop a five year work plan on the Partnership Centre’s theme of ‘Dealing with Cognitive and Related Functional Decline in the Elderly’.
The focus of this themed Partnership Centre will be on supportive care in the home, the community and the long-term care institutions.
This Partnership Centre will involve a broad array of disciplines stretching from the medical sciences, through the health-related professions and well into the evaluative and social sciences. Similarly a broad spectrum of the caring sectors will have to be involved, from the institutional, through the community, the volunteer or charity.
The Call for an Investigator Team will close 24 February 2012.

The ADRF invites applications for grants from clinicians and trained researchers interested in undertaking a dental research project.
Grants shall be used to support investigations and research carried out within Australia by the person or persons specified in each award.
Research projects are assessed on the basis of scientific merit by the Research Advisory Committee (all members of which must be approved by the NHMRC). It is expected that projects will have direct or indirect bearing on the clinical practice of dentistry. The Committee’s deliberations are assisted by at least two external referee reports on each application. Final marks awarded identify those projects that will be recommended for funding. As available funds may not be sufficient to accommodate all recommended applications, the rank order of the applications based on final marks will be used to allocate funds in whole or in part. Applicants must be aware that poorly prepared and incomplete grant applications will not receive high marks, and applicants are encouraged to ensure grants are accurately completed and proof read prior to submission.

This Targeted Call for Research (TCR) is focussed on research that will deliver immediate and long term benefits to children and young people (less than 25 years of age) with mental illness such as policy and service delivery improvements. Applications under the TCR are intended to be highly collaborative and sustainable beyond the duration of NHMRC funding.
Funding & Duration
The NHMRC has allocated a total of up to $13 million to support a small number of funded projects in response to this Mental Health TCR. Research grants of up to 5 years duration will be offered under this TCR and the period requested must be justified within the application.
Eligibility
As this TCR is focussed on applied research that will deliver immediate and long term policy and service delivery improvements, applications that propose to undertake the following research will not be considered:
- basic discovery research into the underlying neurobiological/neuroscience mechanisms of mental illness
(e.g., identification of candidate genes and proteins, animal studies, etc)
- drug discovery and toxicology studies
- epidemiological studies on the extent of mental illness
Applications of the nature stated above are encouraged to apply through the Project Grants scheme or through other schemes.

Cure Cancer Australia Foundation offers this funding in partnership with Cancer Australia’s 2012 round of the Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme (PdCCRS).
Cancer Australia’s PdCCRS is an annual national research project grant scheme which funds cancer research in identified priority areas to help
reduce the impact of cancer in the community and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. The scheme aims to provide a coordinated approach among funding organisations to fund cancer research in priority areas:
- foster collaboration between research groups on a single research project
- lessen duplication and fragmentation of research effort at the national level.
In 2012, Cancer Australia and its collaborating partners will offer funding for project grants in identified priority areas.
Eligibility
They are keen to receive applications from early-career researchers (less than 7 years post PhD or post MBBS) and will be funding 30 researchers this year. Project grants will be awarded in any field of research (including basic laboratory, epidemiology, psychosocial, translational, and clinical) into malignant disease, to provide “start up” funding to support post-doctoral researchers with less than seven years post-doctoral or less than seven years post-MBBS experience at the time of application

The aim of the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation (CCAF) is to improve the lives of marginalised young people in Australia. Funding provided by the CCAF will target 2 core areas:
- Education – providing and enhancing basic skills to assist young people in improving their day-to-day lives.
- Leadership – enabling young people to develop confidence and leadership skills for their future.
Within the core areas of education and leadership, projects will then be selected for funding based on applicants successfully finding innovative ways to address 2 key issues:
- Wellbeing – promoting the physical fitness, nutrition education and social wellbeing of young people.
- The Environment – promoting the sustainability of the environment for future generations of young people.
Note: Priority will be given to projects that focus on engaging young people aged 12-25. This does not mean the total exclusion of other age groups, but programs must clearly prioritise 12-25 year olds.

One-off payments of up to $10,000 supporting approximately 20 programs/year across all 8 states/territories.

The Besen Family Foundation has been established to build on the philanthropic tradition which was started by Eva and Marc Besen. This tradition has now evolved to encompass three broad areas through which the Foundation can express its involvement and commitment: Arts and Culture.
Grants for Arts and Culture will be given to not-for-profit organisations throughout Australia. The foundation will support projects both in Performing and Visual Arts. Preference will be given to projects that are innovative and challenging. Individuals wishing to make an application for a grant from the foundation are required to make submissions in partnership with a not-for-profit organisation. The organisation will then recommend the project to the foundation. The Law and Justice Foundation of NSW Grants Program supports community projects that aim to improve access to justice, particularly for disadvantaged people. The aim of the Foundation's Grants program is to improve access to justice, particularly for socially and economically disadvantaged people, by supporting selected projects to improve access and decrease barriers to justice, or through research, to identify need or ways to improve access to justice.
Eligibility
The Foundation accepts applications from organisations with an ABN but not from individuals. Preference will be given to applications initiated at the community level or with substantial community input. Joint applications from more than one organisation, although the application needs to be under the auspices of a single incorporated organisation, which will take responsibility for managing the project and administering the funds are welcome.
Funding
These are grants of more than $5,000 and are capped at $50,000 (excluding GST). You should include all necessary expenses in your budget to enable the project to be completed successfully.

The Holsworth Wildlife Research Endowment invites applications for post-graduate student research support in ecology, wildlife management and natural history studies. Applications for an Award from the Hansjörg Eichler Research Fund are welcomed from all current financial members of the Australasian Systematic Botany Society. The project must contribute to Australian systematic botany (including cryptogams); must be carried out within Australia; and the applicant must be attached to an Australian research institute (in the broadest sense)

The objectives of the Small Environmental Grants Scheme are to support Australian biodiversity projects that are concerned with one or more of the following:
- monitoring, collecting, and recording data
- community education
- community capacity building (training)
- research and science
Research on a particular native species, flora or fauna surveys within a particular project or action plan, publications that don’t already exist on flora or fauna, interesting ways to engage the community in biodiversity conservation, training or workshops on identification of species, or training on conservation methods etc

The Australian Marine Mammal Centre Grants Program has limited funds and competition for these funds is high. To be eligible for an AMMC Grant, projects should contribute to the AMMC research priorities. These research priorities demonstrate the need to focus on applied questions relevant to conservation management. Applicants must ensure that conservation managers will be able to use their research to minimise negative consequences of interactions between humans and marine mammals.
The Australian Marine Mammal Centre Grants Program is open to both public and private bodies and individuals. Overseas research organisations and researchers are eligible to receive AMMC Grant funding if the project proposed must be directly related to the science and conservation management of Australian marine mammals. Grant recipients from previous grants rounds may apply for this round.
Student eligibility:
1.1 No postgraduate-student will be sole Chief Investigator
1.2 A postgraduate student may be a Chief Investigator provided they have a Supervisor as Primary Chief Investigator
Funding
Funding for the 2012 round will be considered for periods between 1 and 2 years, and the proposed work must be completed by April 2014. It is important to note that commitments of funding for multiple years will limit future funds available for new projects. The AMMC will endeavour to ensure that no greater than 40% of funding in forward years is allocated against multi-year funding. It is anticipated that the grant scheme will have a total value of approximately $1,070,000 for the 2012/13 year.

The AW Howard Memorial Trust was established by the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science (now AIAST) in 1964 to commemorate the unique contribution of Amos Howard in the use of subterranean clover as a pasture plant in Australia. The aim of the Trust is to encourage and promote research and investigation in the fields of natural science and social science, including economics which relate to the development, management and use of pastures.
The AW Howard Memorial Trust Inc awards on merit and need Grants-in-Aid to Australian organisations, associations, communities or persons that seek financial aid for projects designed to either:
- Commemorate significant contributions made to pastoral sciences or pastoral industries at National, State or Regional scales;
- Facilitate effective dissemination and publication of innovative science and extension relevant to the development, management and use of pastures within Australia or within Australian regions;
- Invite an eminent overseas pasture scientist to visit Australia to deliver a keynote address at an Australian, International or Regional conference and/ or to visit major regional centres to interact with scientists and community groups involved in pastoral industries; or
- Contribute towards the purchase of essential equipment required for research and development projects in the field of pastoral sciences.

Established in 1976, the Australian Orchid Foundation is a voluntary organisation whose members are dedicated to promote orchids, or are persons who are deeply interested in these plants, either in a cultural or scientific sense.
The Australian Orchid Foundation offers funding for the following purposes:
- Studies to research orchids in their habitat and management practices to protect those orchids and their habitats
- Studies of wild populations of orchids, their biology, distribution, conservation, and taxonomy
- Cultivation and propagation of orchids
- Education of the public
- Education of young people in particular in the sciences relevant to orchids

The Indo-Pacific Cetacean Research and Conservation Fund (IPCF) is a competitive grant program administered by the Australian Marine Mammal Centre (AMMC) on behalf of the Australian Government.
The Fund aims to attract high quality, innovative and relevant research projects that address research and conservation challenges of interest to the Australian Government, developing countries in the Indo-Pacific Region and the cetacean research and conservation community more generally
Funding & Duration of Award
Successful proposals are eligible to receive between $10,000 and $30,000 per year but larger grants may be considered if the proposed project has exceptional conservation and scientific merit. Funding will be provided for projects for up to three years, with all work and payments completed by the end of April 2014.
AMMC encourages applicants to identify and include co-funding opportunities.
Eligibility
Applications must be submitted by a research organisation or institution and not by an individual.
The IPCF supports research by investigators based at the following organisations:
- universities and other tertiary education institutions
- state museums and state-funded institutions
- bodies subject to the Commonwealth Authorities and Companies Act 1997, such as the CSIRO
- international organisations and governments from developing countries

Applications follow a two step process. Expressions of Interest (EOI) will be reviewed by AMMC steering committee. Detailed applications will then be requested from highly ranked EOI's and a final set of projects selected for funding.

HAL's General Call is for proposals that are seeking to be funded by Voluntary Contribution (VC). HAL can co-invest with a proposal applicant on a dollar for dollar basis. The funds contributed by the applicant are referred to as Voluntary Contributions (VCs). HAL is able to provide matching funds from the Australian Government for VCs for projects which fall within the definition of R&D and are in line with the Australian Government's Rural Research & Development Priorities.

The aim of the TRF is to allow the FRDC to provide investment funds to its stakeholders in a timely manner to take advantage of opportunities, avert threats, or manage unforeseen events, as they arise. A TRF project may be of an urgent ‘break-the-glass’ type; or, it could also be a project that is used to overcome significant hurdles in, or to significantly fast track, important stakeholder processes, including production. In these cases it is likely that the adoption and benefits will be significantly brought forward if the project had not been funded at all.
Investment criteria
The FRDC's investment criteria specifically for the Tactical Research Fund are:
- projects should be a high priority and driven by the relevant stakeholders. The project proposal must formally demonstrate that the stakeholder supports the proposed project as a high priority, aimed at achieving a specific outcome or responding to an unforseen event
- project's outputs should be immediately adoptable by the stakeholder in order to achieve the specific outcome
Funding & Duration
FRDC investment (including any industry cash contributions) must not exceed $75,000 (this is not inclusive of in-kind contributions). Projects must be completed within 18 months. This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2011
Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

The AIB Labs Research Infrastructure Fund (RIF) is a program designed to facilitate the establishment of research service facilities/organisations to serve the needs of the bioscience research community. The Research Infrastructure Fund (RIF) provides grants to AIB Labs facilities. AIB Labs facilities are committed to working towards the following objectives:
- Providing general access to major bioscience equipment or specific technologies in high demand by SA researchers;
- Promoting and co-ordinating services essential to the SA bioscience
community;
- Implementing relevant quality standards and accreditation;
- Working towards commercial principles of service delivery;
- Augmenting development towards self-sustained financial viability.
Eligibility
The applicant must be an existing AIB Labs facility, or a South Australian research or service organisation engaged in the bioscience field that is willing to become an AIB Labs facility. An existing AIB Labs facility whose AIB Labs membership is currently suspended is not eligible to apply. The funding must be used to leverage or match Australian Research Council - Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (ARC-LIEF) Grant applications.

The Army History Research Grants Scheme supports research into the role and involvement of the Australian Army in the development of the nation. The scheme has been in operation since 1993. Grants range to a maximum of $15,000 in the financial year and are awarded by the Army after academic assessment.
Three areas of research relevant to Army's requirements have been identified:
1. Military strategy and operations
2. Military social history (war and society issues)
3. Military heritage (aspects of militaria)
Funding
Grants range to a maximum of $15,000 in the financial year and are awarded by the Army after academic assessment.
Eligibility
The scheme is open to academic and non-institutional researchers, and Grants are up to a maximum of $15,000.00 for one year. However, in order to support more research, grants of over $7,500.00 will usually only be granted in cases of special merit. Priority will be given to topics which improve the professional knowledge of the Australian Army, within the following areas of research:
Military Strategy and Operations: Including command and leadership, doctrine development, logistics, strategy, operations, tactics, civil-military relations, intelligence, joint service issues, combat/battle experience and military biography. Emphasis should be placed on analysis of events, rather than narrative or description.
Military Social History:
Applied to the study of combat, identity and military ideology with the aim of yielding knowledge and an understanding of issues of continuing relevance to Army. Emphasis should be placed on the essentials of military history - command, battle, the complexities of military planning and doctrine development - rather than on society.
Military Heritage:
Military Heritage studies may be supported if they address areas in which there are no extant records.
Applicants are advised to review their projects carefully to ensure the focus is on the history of the Australian Army. Projects in which the history of the Army is peripheral, or the focus is on another entity, are unlikely to be supported.

World Community Grid invites public and not-for-profit organizations to apply to use its powerful grid technology at no cost for projects that benefit humanity. Grid technology enables researchers to access tremendous amounts of power, exceeding that of several supercomputers, to run complex computations and to accelerate the pace of their research. Research results must be made available to the global research community and will be made available on World Community Grid's web site.
World Community Grid is seeking proposals from research organizations interested in harnessing the immense power of Internet-connected computers to accelerate humanitarian research. Their goal is to support innovative efforts that will benefit most from this technology and promise to deliver significant results on the most pressing issues facing the global community. To meet this goal, World Community Grid plans to implement as many as five research projects per year.
World Community Grid supports research that is:
- Focused on solving problems to benefit humanity;
- Conducted by public or nonprofit organizations;
- Contributed to the public domain; and
- Accelerated by grid computing technology.
Research projects that benefit from grid technology are those that perform computations that require millions of computer processing units (CPUs) and that can be divided into smaller independent computations.

JDRF recognizes the need at this time to support the research of investigators whose research is being curtailed or delayed by failure to receive funding. It is beneficial and of mutual interest to both the scientific community and JDRF to keep these scientists in the field, to help them receive funding for their proposals, and to have them help accelerate the JDRF mission.

$USD 55,000 maximum/year for up to 1 year, including up to 10% for indrect costs. Generally not renewable after 1 year
Eligibility

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms; topics range from molecular and cellular approaches to systems and cognitive neuroscience. A clear emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences.
Emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring together scientists preferably from different disciplines (e.g. from chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering) to focus on problems in the life sciences. Two types of Research Grant are available: Young Investigators' Grants and Program Grants. Participating scientists and laboratories may be situated anywhere in the world.
Young Investigators' Grants are awarded to teams of researchers, all of whom are within the first five years after obtaining an independent laboratory (e.g. Assistant Professor, Lecturer or equivalent). Applications for Young Investigators' Grants will be reviewed in competition with each other independently of applications for Program Grants.
Program Grantsre awarded to teams of researchers, all of whom are within the first five years after obtaining an independent laboratory (e.g. Assistant Professor, Lecturer or equivalent). Morris Animal Foundation is a world leader in advancing veterinary research to protect, treat and cure animals. The Foundation leads the way in addressing the most serious animal health issues for dogs, cats, horses and many wildlife species. Morris Animal Foundation is also training the next generation of veterinary scientists through grant programs that encourage and support aspiring researchers.
Receiving a Foundation grant is a highly competitive process and depends on the amount of available funding, the number of proposals for a given health issue or animal and donor interest. Grant proposals are accepted for small companion animals (dogs and cats), large companion animals (horses and llamas/alpacas) and wildlife. Proposals can be submitted online only.

This award is designed to support young scientists just embarking on their independent research careers and is limited, therefore, to those holding recent faculty appointments. The applicants’ research interests should be consonant with those of the Foundation.
These grants do not cover the recipient’s salary, but do provide salary support for technical help. They may not exceed $USD 75,000 per year, and are awarded for two years.
Basil O’Connor applicants may not be recipients of a major grant (e.g. an RO1, or other grant exceeding $USD 200,000 a year) at the time of the application. Candidates may not simultaneously submit an application for any other March of Dimes research program. Those who have previously submitted an application to the March of Dimes are not eligible for a Basil O’Connor Award, but may apply for a regular research grant.

The March of Dimes seeks applications requesting grant support for projects related to causes of prematurity. Research proposals of new paradigms based on strong conceptual frameworks are invited. The intent is to provide new insights into the large, and increasing, proportion of preterm deliveries in which the cause (and thus the means of prevention) remains elusive. Research subjects appropriate for support by the March of Dimes include basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioral studies.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) is pleased to announce the PCF-Honorable A. David Mazzone Special Challenge Award Research Program 2012.
These two-year awards will provide a total of $1 million per team. Challenge Awards support large-scale research projects. Proposals must be from teams of at least 3 highly experienced investigators capable of providing unique scientific expertise to the solution of a significant problem in prostate cancer research. A team may be assembled from one institution, or several institutions, from across the globe. These awards will focus on funding treatment sciences: investigations of new ideas in man or laboratory support of a high impact clinical investigation.
Treatment Sciences research with a high probability of near-term patient benefit is required in the following topic areas:
- Translational research in metabolism/adiposity/nutrition/survivorship
- Molecular imaging in both primary and metastatic disease
- Co-targeting tumor microenvironment
- First-in-field research on new targets in metastatic disease systemic treatment
- Mechanisms of resistance to new treatments for advanced prostate cancer
- Diagnostics and biomarkers that differentiate indolent from metastatic prostate cancer
Funding
These awards will cover direct research costs only, will be two years in duration, and will provide $USD 500,000 per year in support.

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is the nation’s largest and most prominent voluntary health agency dedicated to supporting investigators studying systemic lupus erythematosus. The primary mission of the ALR is to help people with lupus lead fulfilling and rewarding lives by funding peer-reviewed research into the cause, cure, treatment and prevention of lupus and its secondary complications.
Research Grants: Approved grant applications will be eligible to receive a 2-year award for up to $USD 350,000 (up to $USD 175,000 per year for two years). New Tools to Study Astrocyte Heterogeneity, Development and Function in Brain Regions Relevant to Mental Illness (R01)
The primary objective of this FOA is to address barriers to astrocyte research that are due to the scarcity of tools and datasets to target and identify astrocytes rigorously. Applications should aim to transform the field of astrocyte research by generating resources that will be widely used throughout the neuroscience community. Research supported by this initiative will (i) provide new tools for manipulating and identifying astrocytes based on their heterogeneity, developmental stage or functional state; (ii) identify novel phenomic signatures and combinatorial regulatory mechanisms of astrocyte development/function that account for astrocyte diversity; (iii) characterize mechanisms by which astrocytes regulate neural circuits serving cognition, emotion and social function or contribute to abnormal neural function relevant to psychopathology.

Causes and Consequences of Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes (R01)

CFRD is one of the most common complications of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) that occurs in almost half the patients with Cystic Fibrosis as they age. The Malcolm Douglas Grant Research Fund was established in 2004 by Ms Natalie McConaghy in memory of her nephew, Malcolm Douglas Grant.
The primary purpose of the Fund is to facilitate research of an international standard into the cause of, or treatments for, patients with Morquio syndrome, other mucopolysaccharidoses, or other genetic disorders involving bone dysplasias within the lysosomal storage disorders group. The Malcolm Douglas Grant Research Fund will fund one Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital campus, Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCHN), for a period of three years commencing in 2012.
Eligibility
This Fellowship will be open to graduates with a minimum of two years’ postdoctoral research experience.
Funding
The stipend will be $70,000 per annum for a maximum of three years, with a maintenance allowance of $5,000 provided in the first year, and a travel allowance of $5,000 in the final year to support national and international presentations of the research undertaken.

APSA Congressional Fellowship Program is the nation's oldest and most prestigious congressional fellowship. The Smithsonian's Fellowships in Museum Practice (FMP) program is a professional development opportunity for experienced museum practitioners, academics, and training providers. It was developed in response to an articulated need by the field for career development and renewal opportunities at advanced levels.
The program, unique in the museum profession worldwide, supports research about issues of theory and practice in education, curation, exhibition, administration, and other museum functions and disciplines. It offers competitively selected individuals an opportunity to study a museological topic of their choice for up-to-six months in residence at the Smithsonian.
Eligibility
The program is open to mid- and senior-level museum personnel, researchers, and training providers. All disciplines and functional areas of work in museums and allied cultural and educational organizations are eligible to apply. However, priority is given to those fields which reflect the on-going research of the Smithsonian Institution, and its strategic plan. Antarctica's isolation and inhospitable nature are considerable barriers to all but the few who can afford the high cost of visiting as a tourist, or to those scientists and support personnel who participate in national Antarctic programs.
As a way of informing and educating Australians about Antarctica and Australia's activities there, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) administers the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship enabling those with a non-science focus to experience Antarctica first-hand so that they may communicate this unique experience and understanding to other Australians.
Funding
The Fellowship takes the form of either a berth on a ship or an intercontinental flight to Antarctica and associated logistical support ie, food, accommodation and transport. The AAD also provides cold-weather clothing on loan.
Eligibility
Each year, the AAD invites applications from two main groups:
- artists, researchers, filmmakers and writers with a demonstrated track record
- talented emerging artists and writers from the creative arts, humanities and social sciences
The program aims to nurture the production of excellent and significant works of art and interpretation by leading professionals and talented emerging artists and writers.

The Japan Society for the promotion of Science (JSPS), in association with the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Research Council, offers postdoctoral fellowships annually for Australian researchers to work in institutes affiliated with JSPS. The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers provides opportunities for Australian postdoctoral researchers to conduct, under the guidance of their Japanese hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. The program aims to help such researchers advance their own research while contributing to the advancement of research in Japan and the counterpart countries.
Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 to 24 months. Successful candidates must start the Fellowship in Japan between: 1 July 2012 and 30 November 2012.
Eligibility
Each candidate for the Fellowship must:
- Be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident at time of application. (If you were not born in Australia, please provide proof of Australian citizenship or Australian permanent residency).
- Hold a doctorate degree when the Fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within six years prior to 2 April 2012 (i.e. awarded on or after 2 April 2006) or be scheduled to receive a doctorate degree before the Fellowship goes into affect.
- If the doctorate degree has not yet been awarded, a letter is required form the candidate's institute stating the date that he/she will officially receive the degree. Note: At time of application, PhD thesis needs to have been submitted.
- Have arranged in advance a research plan with his/her Japanese host.
- Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship under JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers or an STA Fellowship Program are not eligible.
- MD (Medical Doctors) holders without a PhD are not eligible
Applications in the humanities and social sciences are also accepted but ONLY for the Postdoctoral Fellowships. Medical doctors without a doctorate are not eligible to apply for the Postdoctoral Fellowship.

The Churchill Trust was established in 1965 to honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill by awarding overseas research Fellowships known as 'Churchill Fellowships'. Churchill Fellowships allow you to design your own research project, travel the world and further your knowledge in your chosen field, before returning to make a real contribution to Australian society.
Funding
The value of every Fellowship is different as it is calculated based on the number of countries visited, the duration of the approved Fellowship and an estimated airfare. The average is currently well in excess of $20,000.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for a Churchill Fellowship you must:
- be an Australian Citizen over the age of 18
- not be enrolled in tertiary studies directly related to the topic of your proposed project
- have experience in and commitment to the field of your project
- have a project of between 4 weeks and approximately 6 weeks length that requires overseas investigation

The Australian Federation of University Women – South Australian Postdoctoral Grants are to be offered to two female postdoctoral fellows, with preference being given to applicants not more than 5 years out from their Doctor of Philosophy. Each grant will be worth up to $5,000.

JDRF, with the support of the Macquarie Group Foundation, offers travel grants to early-stage researchers, and to allied health and nursing professionals, to support the development of expertise in the field of type 1 diabetes research in Australia.
JDRF and the Macquarie Group Foundation support excellence and innovation in research in the field of type 1 diabetes through the Macquarie Group Foundation Diabetes Research Innovation Partnership. The partnership aims to advance the level and impact of type 1 diabetes research in Australia.
The Early-Stage Researcher Travel Grants and The Allied Health and Nursing Travel Grants are funded by the Macquarie Group Foundation as part of this partnership.
1. Early-Stage Researcher Travel Grants: This program is designed to support medical or science graduates in the early stages of their research career (eg current PhD students, or not more than five years post-doctoral). The applicant must be committed to the mission of JDRF to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its complications, and demonstrate relevance to one of JDRF’s therapeutic areas: Beta Cell Therapies, Immune Therapies, Complications Therapies or Glucose Control.
2. Allied Health/Nursing Travel Grants: This program is designed to support allied health or nursing professionals, or allied health or nursing students enrolled in a post graduate program, whose work/research will impact on the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their carers and families. The applicant must be committed to the mission of JDRF to prevent, treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its complications, and demonstrate relevance to one of JDRF’s therapeutic areas: Beta Cell Therapies, Immune Therapies, Complications Therapies or Glucose Control.
The term 'allied health' refers to health professionals usually considered part of the diabetes management team – i.e. diabetes educators, dieticians, psychologists, social workers, and podiatrists. In addition other allied health professionals who are considered relevant to the management of type 1 diabetes, such as exercise physiologists, occupational therapists and pharmacists, will also be considered.

The AW Howard Memorial Trust was established by the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science (now AIAST) in 1964 to commemorate the unique contribution of Amos Howard in the use of subterranean clover as a pasture plant in Australia. The Award consists of a Silver Medal, which is awarded annually for scientific research in one of four categories which rotate from year to year.
Nominations are invited for the Royal Society of Victoria Medal for Scientific Research 2012 in Category IV: Physical Sciences. The Bill Dawbin Postdoctoral Fellowship seeks projects for research activities to use non-lethal techniques to improve the conservation of cetaceans through improved management of human and cetacean interactions.
The research will address key knowledge gaps including building a stronger scientific base for cetacean policy and conservation in the Australasian region, deepening the pool of academic expertise about cetaceans, contributing to cetacean research efforts for the global public good, and contributing to cetacean research, conservation and management issues.

Each year RV Southern Surveyor undertakes a number of transit voyages between the ports where one Research Voyage finishes and the next commences. Between July 2012 and March 2013 Southern Surveyor will undertake five transit voyages, providing an opportunity for researchers, early career researchers and students to carry out underway or opportunistic science during transit voyages.
For Transit Voyages between 2012-2013, there are two programs available:
Next Wave
for early career researchers and students
Activities most suited to transit voyages are those that focus on the collection and analysis of data and samples while the vessel is underway between ports. Institutions are encouraged to develop training and education programs for onboard delivery that integrate with campus based studies. Berths will also be provided for the academic staff required to support the training program. These include a Chief Scientist to supervise the program and other watch leaders or supervisors.
Transit Voyage Science
for researchers
Activities most suited to Transit Voyage Science Programs are those that focus on under way data and sample collection, development of methods or testing of equipment. Bench and laboratory space and berths will be allocated to support the Transit Voyage Science Program.
Eligibility
All researchers employed by an Australian research organisation, based in Australia, are eligible to apply for time on the Southern Surveyor. Any transit voyage may accommodate both Next Wave and Transit Voyage Science programs.

Solicitation of Assays for High Throughput Screening (HTS) to Discover Chemical Probes (R21)
This research opportunity encourages investigators to form collaborations with an established academic, nonprofit, or commercial high throughput screening (HTS) facility that has the requisite expertise and experience to implement HTS-ready assays for the discovery and development of small molecule chemical probes.
With this scheme the NIH wishes to stimulate research in 1) discovery and development of novel, small molecules for their potential use in studying disease treatment relevant to the missions of the participating NIH institutes, and 2) discovery and/or validation of novel, biological targets that will inform studies of disease mechanisms.
