Research Branch Bulletin
Issue No & Date: 269, 6 March, 2012
 | Contents |
The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides USD$ 3.8 million to the Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP).
This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
The MSRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research relevant to the prevention, etiology, pathogenesis, assessment, and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The vision of the MSRP is to prevent the occurrence, cure, reverse, or slow the progression, and lessen the personal and societal impact of MS. The FY12 MSRP specifically encourages applications that address critical needs of the MS community as listed below:
1. Pathophysiological basis of disease progression
2.
Gene-environment interactions in MS
3. Technological development of hardware and/or software instruments for clinical research data capture and modeling
The MSRP is providing information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications. FY12 MSRP program announcement and general application instructions for the following award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on Grants.gov in March 2012. Application deadlines will be available when the program announcement is released. This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the Government.
Idea Award
Investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent).
Supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/potentially high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries in understanding the causes and progression of MS and/or improvements in patient care and/or quality of life. Preliminary data that are relevant to MS and the proposed research project should be included Clinical trials are not allowed Preproposal submission is required; application submission is by invitation only Maximum funding of USD$ 400,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) Period of performance not to exceed 2 years.
All applications must conform to the final program announcement and general application instructions that will be available for electronic downloading from the Grants.gov website in March 2012. The application package containing the required forms for the award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov.

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) strongly supports research via the Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine Foundation, annually dedicating in excess of $600,000 to research. Applications for funding for the following Grants are now being called for:
1. Project Grant (including Fellowship Grant):
The award of a Project Grant is ANZCA’s main avenue for the support of projects in biomedical research in universities, medical schools, hospitals and other research institutions.
Project Grants are awarded to support research proposed by Fellows of ANZCA, or FPM and their collaborators (trainees, scientists, students etc).
The maximum amount available for a project grant is $60,000 per year, and nearly all grants are funded for one year only.
Scholarship grants are made within the ANZCA project grant scheme.
2. Simulation/Education Grant: Simulation/Education Grants are awarded to support research proposed by Fellows of ANZCA, or FPM and their collaborators (trainees, scientists, students etc).
The College recognises the need for high quality research in medical simulation and education in human factors as they relate to our specialties. In order to specifically encourage research in this area and because of the challenges in comparing clinical and laboratory research with research in education, the College established a specific simulation/education grant. Investigators conducting research in medical simulation and education in human factors may also apply for funding through the ANZCA Project Grant, Novice Investigator Grant, Academic Enhancement Grant and Scholarship schemes. However, only one application may be made for each specific research project except in relation to AEG grants which may cover the same project or may cover a research project that is a subject of another grant application (note that only one of these applications will be funded). The maximum amount for a simulation/education grant is AUD$60,000 per year and grants are funded for one year only. Scholarship grants are made within the ANZCA project grant scheme. Therefore, researchers in medical simulation and education seeking salary supp

Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) and the Apple and Pear industry requires appropriate individuals and/or organisations to provide a proposal brief (EOI) to address gaps identified in climate change information and activity for the industry. Following a selection process via a program reference group and discussions with representatives from industry, the successful proposal EOIs will be developed by the respective individuals and/or organizations, into a single program called “Responding to Climate Change: Beyond 2010” or similar.
The aim of this resultant program is to improve the strategic RD&E investment by the apple and pear industry towards climate change / climate variability. Ultimately this program should provide apple and pear growers with a good understanding of the likely climate change impacts on their production systems. This program will be conducted over a period of up to four years.

The SHRM Foundation funds original rigorous empirical research projects that advance the HR profession. The Foundation is seeking grant funding proposals for up to USD$ 200,000 each from individuals and institutions.
The SHRM Foundation funds high impact HR research, aimed at an academic audience while also having direct actionable implications for HR practice, whether the focus is on addressing current challenges or understanding emerging trends. Any topic will be considered, however the grant must be for original rigorous empirical academic research that advances the HR profession. While aimed at an academic audience, funded research should also have clear applicability for HR practice and help contribute to evidence-based HR. As such, projects submitted for funding should have a high likelihood of both adding value to the HR academic literature (i.e., be suitable for leading academic journals) and yielding practical implications for HR managers (i.e., applied outlets should be interested in the research results). It is crucial that there is continuity between the research questions proposed and the methods used.
Eligibility
The Foundation welcomes proposals from any country. There is no requirement that researchers be based in the United States.

AICR awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. They will consider pplications that include some clinical research in a project which is mostly basic or translational. However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research are beyond the remit of AICR.
Projects are for a maximum of three years and can include funding for research staff (post doctoral and/or PhD students), consumables, essential items of equipment and travel.
Funding
AICR does not have a formal upper limit for the total cost of an application, but it should be noted that most of the three-year grants we award have a total budget of £200,000 or less.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now accepting Letters of Inquiry for the development of an easy-to-use tool that rapidly assesses the immune status of children against select vaccine-preventable diseases. Inquiries will be welcome that focus on prototype development and detail plans for future commercialization possibilities. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for profit companies.
The purpose of this request for letter of intent (RFLOI) is to solicit inquiries toward the development of a prototype and commercialization plan for an easy-to-use tool that rapidly assesses the immune status of children against selected vaccine- preventable diseases (e.g. tetanus, measles, etc.). The ideal tool would be low cost and easy to use in the fieldby those working in national immunization programs. This tool would be used as an adjunct to current vaccination coverage surveys to help more accurately determine and validate coverage levels and assess population-level immunity.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is looking forward to receiving innovative ideas from around the world to develop an immunity assessment tool that can help more accurately measure vaccination coverage in the developing world.
