The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides USD$ 3.8 million to the Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The MSRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research relevant to the prevention, etiology, pathogenesis, assessment, and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The vision of the MSRP is to prevent the occurrence, cure, reverse, or slow the progression, and lessen the personal and societal impact of MS. The FY12 MSRP specifically encourages applications that address critical needs of the MS community as listed below:

1. Pathophysiological basis of disease progression
2. Gene-environment interactions in MS
3. Technological development of hardware and/or software instruments for clinical research data capture and modeling

The MSRP is providing information in this pre-announcement to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications. FY12 MSRP program announcement and general application instructions for the following award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on Grants.gov in March 2012. Application deadlines will be available when the program announcement is released. This pre-announcement should not be construed as an obligation by the Government.

Idea Award
Investigators at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). Supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/potentially high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries in understanding the causes and progression of MS and/or improvements in patient care and/or quality of life. Preliminary data that are relevant to MS and the proposed research project should be included Clinical trials are not allowed Preproposal submission is required; application submission is by invitation only Maximum funding of USD$ 400,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) Period of performance not to exceed 2 years.

All applications must conform to the final program announcement and general application instructions that will be available for electronic downloading from the Grants.gov website in March 2012. The application package containing the required forms for the award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov.

Applications for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program (ALSRP) are being solicited by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Defense Health Program.  The ALSRP was established in 2007 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit aimed at preclinical assessment of therapeutics for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  Appropriations for the ALSRP from FY07 through FY11 totaled $USD 25.5 million (M).  The FY12 appropriation is $USD 6.4M.

The goal of ALSRP is to promote the introduction of improved therapies for ALS by encouraging ALS investigators to undertake preclinical studies of novel and existing agents. This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

1. Therapeutic Development Award (Pre-Application): The Therapeutic Development Award supports the preclinical assessment of therapeutics for ALS. The proposed studies are expected to be empirical in nature and product-driven but may have a hypothesis-driven approach, provided the focus is on therapeutics. It is anticipated that the agents and/or data generated from these awards will lead to the advancement of new therapies for ALS.

The Therapeutic Development Award mechanism is designed to support preclinical testing and development of therapeutics for ALS. Applications must include preliminary data relevant to the phase(s) of the preclinical development process covered by the proposed research. The application should include a clear statistical plan of analysis, if appropriate. Applicants must clearly and explicitly articulate what impact the project may have on therapeutic development for ALS. Clinical trials will not be supported with this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to submit applications. The maximum period of performance is 3 years and maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are $USD 1,500,000 plus indirect costs.

2. Therapeutic Idea Award (Pre-Application): The Therapeutic Idea Award is designed to promote new ideas that are still in the early stages of development with the potential to yield highly impactful data and new avenues of investigation for novel therapeutics for ALS treatment. This mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in ALS therapeutics. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.

Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to submit applications. The maximum period of performance is 2 years and the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are $USD 400,000 plus indirect costs.

Pre-Application Submission
A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (http://cdmrp.org) prior to the pre-application deadline of April 9, 2012. Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov

Please send a copy of your Pre-application along with the completed University Grant Application Coversheet to Dr Don McMaster, by emailing don.mcmaster@adelaide.edu.au.

The SHRM Foundation funds original rigorous empirical research projects that advance the HR profession. The Foundation is seeking grant funding proposals for up to USD$ 200,000 each from individuals and institutions.

The SHRM Foundation funds high impact HR research, aimed at an academic audience while also having direct actionable implications for HR practice, whether the focus is on addressing current challenges or understanding emerging trends. Any topic will be considered, however the grant must be for original rigorous empirical academic research that advances the HR profession. While aimed at an academic audience, funded research should also have clear applicability for HR practice and help contribute to evidence-based HR. As such, projects submitted for funding should have a high likelihood of both adding value to the HR academic literature (i.e., be suitable for leading academic journals) and yielding practical implications for HR managers (i.e., applied outlets should be interested in the research results). It is crucial that there is continuity between the research questions proposed and the methods used.

Eligibility
The Foundation welcomes proposals from any country. There is no requirement that researchers be based in the United States.

The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) strongly supports research via the Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine Foundation, annually dedicating in excess of $600,000 to research. Applications for funding for the following Grants are now being called for:

1. Project Grant (including Fellowship Grant):

The award of a Project Grant is ANZCA’s main avenue for the support of projects in biomedical research in universities, medical schools, hospitals and other research institutions. Project Grants are awarded to support research proposed by Fellows of ANZCA, or FPM and their collaborators (trainees, scientists, students etc).
The maximum amount available for a project grant is $60,000 per year, and nearly all grants are funded for one year only. Scholarship grants are made within the ANZCA project grant scheme.

2. Simulation/Education Grant: Simulation/Education Grants are awarded to support research proposed by Fellows of ANZCA, or FPM and their collaborators (trainees, scientists, students etc). The College recognises the need for high quality research in medical simulation and education in human factors as they relate to our specialties. In order to specifically encourage research in this area and because of the challenges in comparing clinical and laboratory research with research in education, the College established a specific simulation/education grant. Investigators conducting research in medical simulation and education in human factors may also apply for funding through the ANZCA Project Grant, Novice Investigator Grant, Academic Enhancement Grant and Scholarship schemes. However, only one application may be made for each specific research project except in relation to AEG grants which may cover the same project or may cover a research project that is a subject of another grant application (note that only one of these applications will be funded). The maximum amount for a simulation/education grant is AUD$60,000 per year and grants are funded for one year only. Scholarship grants are made within the ANZCA project grant scheme.
