Research News & Information

[ Expand / Collapse all ]

The ARC recently received a query regarding the level of compliance that would be achieved by publications arising from a particular ARC-funded project being deposited in specific repositories.

Relevant clauses in ARC funding rules and funding agreements address the publication and dissemination of project outputs – for example, clause 5.2.2 under “Budget Items Supported” in the Discovery Projects Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2013, and clause 20.3 under “Material Produced under this Agreement, Publication and Dissemination of Research Outputs” in the Funding Agreement regarding funding for Discovery Projects to commence in 2012.

Clause 5.2.2 in those Funding Rules states that: Publication and dissemination of Project outputs and outreach activity costs may be supported at up to two (2) per cent of total ARC funding awarded to the Project, and no prior approval is required; nor does this need to be separately itemised at time of application. This excludes fees for patent application and holding. The ARC strongly encourages publication in publicly accessible outlets and the depositing of data and any publications arising from a Project in an appropriate subject and/or institutional repository.

The ARC’s policies and procedures in this area are designed to ensure that the research that it funds on behalf of the Australian Government is as accessible as practicable.

The ARC acknowledges that in some instances, and for specific reasons, open access may not be appropriate – for example, clause 13.3.2 under “Reporting requirements” in the Discovery Projects Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2013 states that: The Final Report must justify why any publications from a Project have not been deposited in appropriate repositories within 12 months of publication.

Researchers supported by ARC funding, in consultation with their administering organisation’s research office, are best placed to exercise judgment as to the repositories that are appropriate in seeking to achieve compliance in this area.  The ARC will not necessarily be in a position to offer guidance or advice in relation to individual repositories or sites, but accessibility to the wider community is an important consideration.

The NHMRC has announced a Call for an Investigator Team for the second Centre under NHMRC’s new Partnership Centres for Better Health program.

This program is designed to increase the availability and use of research and researchers for the organisations involved in delivering, managing or making policy for health and health care.

The second Centre will receive at least $20 million over five years from NHMRC and its funding partners: Australian National Preventive Health Agency, NSW Health, QLD Health and ACT Health.

The Investigator Team selected from the call will work with the partners to develop a five year work plan on the Partnership Centre’s theme ofSystems Perspectives on Preventing Lifestyle-Related Chronic Health Problems’.

The Centre will evaluate current national, state and territory prevention and health promotion programs and create an evidence base for innovative health promotion and disease prevention policies and programs.  The Centre’s work will incorporate broader system factors such as food, education and employment policies and urban planning into its policy and program design.  The Centre is also expected to support the implementation of such policies and programs.

With this scope of work before it this Partnership Centre will clearly involve a broad array of disciplines stretching from the medical sciences, through the health-related professions and well into the evaluative and social sciences.

The unique scope of work that this Partnership Centre will perform and its multidisciplinary nature may be of interest to all staff involved in health science, law, business, economics and social science.

The Call for an Investigator Team will close 11 April 2012.

The Therapeutics Development Initiative is a funding mechanism to support and stimulate preclinical Parkinson’s disease research at for-profit institutions. Part of the annual Pipeline Programs, this funding program seeks to support preclinical development of Parkinson’s disease therapies which have the potential for fundamentally altering disease course and/or improving treatment of symptoms above and beyond current standards of care.

Funding & Duration

MJFF intends to fund multiple proposals as part of this initiative. There is no set budget limit for the Therapeutics Development Initiative as it is anticipated that certain research projects could require higher budgets than others. However, no application may exceed a project period greater than two years and budgets must be reasonable and appropriate for the work performed. Please note that funds awarded under this RFP cannot be used for equipment purchases or travel expenses. In addition, MJFF’s policy limits the direct salary that an individual may receive under an MJFF funding award. The maximum base salary for an individual applying to an MJFF funding program is US $200,000.

The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides USD $3.8 million to the Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP).
This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The MSRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research relevant to the prevention, etiology, pathogenesis, assessment, and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The vision of the MSRP is to prevent the occurrence, cure, reverse, or slow the progression, and lessen the personal and societal impact of MS. The FY12 MSRP specifically encourages applications that address critical needs of the MS community as listed below:

  • Pathophysiological basis of disease progression
  • Gene-environment interactions in MS
  • Technological development of hardware and/or software instruments for clinical research data capture and modeling

Idea Award: The MSRP Idea Award promotes new ideas that are in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield high-impact findings and new avenues of investigation. This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/potentially high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries in understanding the causes and progression of MS and/or improvements in patient care and/or quality of life. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply and cost sharing/matching is not an eligibility requirement.

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are USD $400,000 plus indrect costs and the maximum period of performance is 2 years.

Submission (Pre-applications)
Note: A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (http://cdmrp.org) prior to the pre-application deadline of April 24, 2012. Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov.

The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides USD $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) to support innovative, high-impact ovarian cancer research. The OCRP is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Outcomes Consortium Development Award: The OCRP Outcomes Consortium Development Award supports a multi-institutional research effort conducted by leading ovarian cancer researchers and consumer advocates that specifically focuses on identifying and understanding predictors of disease outcomes in ovarian cancer patients.

Research projects proposed under the Outcomes Consortium Development Award must focus on predictors of disease outcomes, particularly for ovarian cancer patients who are long-term survivors. The research project should address overarching issues that have broad implications for the disease and risk management, such as risk factors at the individual level and systems level, treatment, toxicity, and dormancy. The research project should not focus merely on the study of specific molecular pathways or genes. The research project should be focused on identifying what is unique to long-term survivors (defined as those who are at least 10 years from initial diagnosis) as compared to short-term survivors.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply and cost sharing/matching is not an eligibility requirement.

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are USD $400,000 for direct costs plus indirect costs and the maximum period of performance is 2 years.

Investigator-initiated research is encouraged in the areas of congenital or acquired BMF. Studies focused on BMF syndromes and their progression to other malignancies such as leukemia, are acceptable. Translational projects including bone marrow transplantation studies are encouraged to address issues that are unique to BMF syndromes. Stem cell biology studies should be clearly related to BMF syndromes.

Note: research primarily focused on myeloproliferative neoplasms, leukemia, or other malignancies is discouraged.

1. Idea Award: The BMFRP Idea Award is intended to support innovative ideas and high-impact approaches to BMF research to move toward the BMFRP vision of understanding and curing BMF diseases. This award mechanism is designed to support new ideas, not ideas that are extensions of existing work. Proposed research studies should have a high probability of revealing new avenues of investigation. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply and cost sharing/matching is not an eligibility requirement.

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are USD $360,000 in direct costs plus indirect costs. and the maximum period of performance is 3 years.

This award is intended as a recognition of excellence in educational research by doctoral students. It is seen by the Association as a way of recognising the high quality contribution made to educational knowledge by graduate students, and at the same time promoting dissemination and furthering of research.

The main criterion for assessment of excellence in doctoral research in education will be the contribution made to theoretical, empirical, and/or methodological knowledge in education. In particular, preference will be given to studies which make a conceptual advance in educational theory, policy and practice, which point to the methods of improving educational practice or pioneer innovation, which contribute through disciplined research to knowledge on which new educational practices may be based, or which contribute to advances in methodology of educational research, evaluation and dissemination.

Anyone who has been awarded a doctoral degree from an Australian institution in the two years prior to June 30 in the year of the award is eligible. Theses accepted for the degree after this date may be nominated in the following year. Nominations may be made from qualified Faculties, Schools or Departments of Education by the Dean or relevant Head. Normally only one award will be made each year. The award comprises a citation from the Association together with a return airfare to the Conference.

MSRA provides Incubator Grants to enable the applicant to obtain preliminary data or validate a proof of concept relating to the cause, cure or management of MS.  Subject to the research outcome, the Incubator Grant is expected to result in a clear hypothesis being available, for a future Project Grant application. The Incubator Grant should not be regarded as a bridging, ancillary or small Project Grant.

The Incubator Grant Request to submit (RTS) application is a very short form of the Incubator Grant. It qualifies applicants who may later be invited to submit a full Incubator Grant. A successful RTS application will demonstrate at a high level that the research has the potential to realise the benefits of an Incubator Grant which will allow the applicant to gain expertise, create preliminary data, and lead to a grant application to MSRA, NHMRC, ARC or NMSS at a later stage.

The Endangered Language Fund provides grants for language maintenance and linguistic field work. The work most likely to be funded is that which serves both the native community and the field of linguistics. Work which has immediate applicability to one group and more distant application to the other will also be considered. Publishing subventions are a low priority, although they will be considered. Proposals can originate in any country. The language involved must be in danger of disappearing within a generation or two. Endangerment is a continuum, and the location on the continuum is one factor in our funding decisions.

Eligibility
Researchers and language activists from any country are eligible to apply. Awards can be made to institutions, but no administrative (overhead, indirect) costs are covered.

The Faculty Research Awards Program, sometimes referred to as the Research Awards Program, supports academic research in computer science, engineering, and related fields. Through the program, they fund world-class research at top universities, facilitate interaction between Google and academia, and support projects whose output will be made openly available to the research community. Awards are structured as unrestricted gifts to universities and are designed to support roughly the cost of one graduate student for one year of work. The intent of the Google Research Awards is to support cutting-edge research in Computer Science, Engineering, and related fields.

Their awards tend to fund projects that are highly technical in nature. The work funded through Research Awards tends to be of the type and caliber that the results may be published at top conferences and in top publications in computer science.

Funding
Faculty members can apply for up to USD $150,000 in eligible expenses, but actual award amounts are frequently less than the full amount requested.

Eligibility
Full-time faculty members from universities worldwide are eligible to serve as Principal Investigators (PIs) or co-PIs on Research Awards proposals. Faculty members may submit one proposal per funding cycle as a PI or a co-PI unless they received an award the previous round. In that case we ask that PIs wait until the following round to apply for funding again, whether or not the projects are related.

Submission

The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides USD $10 million (M) to the Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program (GWIRP) to support innovative, high-impact research into Gulf War Illness. The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The GWIRP challenges the scientific community to design high-impact research that will improve the health and lives of veterans who have Gulf War Illness (GWI). GWI is characterized by multiple diverse symptoms that typically include chronic headache, widespread pain, cognitive difficulties, debilitating fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, respiratory symptoms, and other abnormalities that are not explained by established medical diagnoses or standard laboratory tests. The GWIRP focuses its funding on innovative projects that have the potential to make a significant impact on GWI. These may take the form of identification of objective indicators of pathology that distinguish ill from healthy Gulf War veterans, or studies to understand the underlying pathobiology of GWI. The GWIRP encourages high-risk/high-reward research; however, all projects must demonstrate solid judgment and sound rationale.

1.Investigator-Initiated Research Award: The IIRA supports research focusing on the complex of symptoms known as Gulf War Illness (GWI), improving its definition and diagnosis, characterizing disease symptoms, and better understanding its pathobiology. It is intended to encourage basic through clinical research aimed at identification of objective measures to distinguish ill from healthy veterans (e.g., biomarkers), elucidate potential treatment targets for GWI, or improve understanding of the pathobiology underlying GWI symptoms. In addition, studies that characterize chronic effects of neurotoxic exposures at dosage comparable to that encountered during the Gulf War are acceptable.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply and cost sharing/matching is not an eligibility requirement.

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are USD $600,000 plus indirect costs.. and the maximum period of performance is 3 years.

2. Innovative Treatment Evaluation Award: The Innovative Treatment Evaluation Award described in this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity is intended to support the initial evaluation of a treatment or intervention in smaller, early phase or pilot clinical trials, and does not require preliminary data.

The ITEA supports the early systematic evaluation of innovative treatment interventions with the potential to impact the health and lives of veterans with GWI. The results of preliminary studies funded by this award can provide proof of principle data, and support future development of broader efficacy studies of the proposed interventions.

Maximum funding of USD $450,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs) and period of performance not to exceed 3 years.

3. Clinical Trial Award (CTA): The Clinical Trial Award, described in this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity, is intended to support larger, more definitive clinical trials. In contrast, the ITEA supports the initial evaluation of a treatment or intervention in smaller, early phase or pilot clinical trials , and does not require preliminary data. The CTA supports execution of clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on the health and lives of veterans with GWI.

Maximum funding of USD $1,500,000 (plus indirect costs) and period of performance not to exceed 4 years.

Submission (Pre-applications)

Applications for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program (ALSRP) are being solicited by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Defense Health Program.  The ALSRP was established in 2007 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit aimed at preclinical assessment of therapeutics for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  Appropriations for the ALSRP from FY07 through FY11 totaled $USD 25.5 million (M).  The FY12 appropriation is $USD 6.4M.

The goal of ALSRP is to promote the introduction of improved therapies for ALS by encouraging ALS investigators to undertake preclinical studies of novel and existing agents. This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

1. Therapeutic Development Award (Pre-Application): The Therapeutic Development Award supports the preclinical assessment of therapeutics for ALS. The proposed studies are expected to be empirical in nature and product-driven but may have a hypothesis-driven approach, provided the focus is on therapeutics. It is anticipated that the agents and/or data generated from these awards will lead to the advancement of new therapies for ALS.

The Therapeutic Development Award mechanism is designed to support preclinical testing and development of therapeutics for ALS. Applications must include preliminary data relevant to the phase(s) of the preclinical development process covered by the proposed research. The application should include a clear statistical plan of analysis, if appropriate. Applicants must clearly and explicitly articulate what impact the project may have on therapeutic development for ALS. Clinical trials will not be supported with this Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to submit applications. The maximum period of performance is 3 years and maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are $USD 1,500,000 plus indirect costs.

2. Therapeutic Idea Award (Pre-Application): The Therapeutic Idea Award is designed to promote new ideas that are still in the early stages of development with the potential to yield highly impactful data and new avenues of investigation for novel therapeutics for ALS treatment. This mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in ALS therapeutics. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.

Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to submit applications. The maximum period of performance is 2 years and the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are $USD 400,000 plus indirect costs.

Pre-Application Submission
A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (http://cdmrp.org) prior to the pre-application deadline of April 9, 2012. Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov

The March of Dimes research program supports projects aimed at preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

This PRI scheme seeks applications requesting grant support for projects related to causes of prematurity. Research proposals of new paradigms based on strong conceptual frameworks are invited. The intent is to provide new insights into the large, and increasing, proportion of preterm deliveries in which the cause (and thus the means of prevention) remains elusive.

The proposals need to consider especially, but not be limited to, genetics, gene-environment interactions, and animal models. We encourage novel approaches.

The purpose of this FOA is to encourage the submission of applications proposing to use human stem cells to develop methods for generating replacement cells and transplantation techniques for the treatment of ocular diseases and disorders. Studies may include elucidating the mechanisms required to direct stem cell differentiation into specialized ocular cell lineages. The regenerative application of human stem cells offers a promising way to restore lost vision due to injury and disease.  Many of the leading causes of visual and ocular disorders are due in part to the loss of photoreceptors, inner retinal neurons, or corneal epithelial cells.  Preliminary studies demonstrate that cell-based therapies may have the potential to treat ophthalmic diseases including corneal degeneration and inflammation, glaucoma, and vascular and neurodegenerative diseases of the retina.

This initiative will support basic and preclinical studies leading to the development of differentiated human stem cells for treating ocular diseases and disorders.  Studies may include (1) elucidating the mechanisms required to direct stem cell differentiation into specialized ocular cell lineages, (2) developing methods for the generation of replacement ocular cells and tissues, and (3) identifying factors required for optimal transplantation of stem cell-derived lineages, resulting in functional regeneration.

Only studies using human stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (hESC), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), and adult stem cells, will be responsive to this announcement.  All human ES cell lines proposed for these studies must be listed in the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry.  This program will not support animal stem cell research nor human clinical trials.

Funding
Applicants may request up to $250,000 annual direct costs.  Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project.
