The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has commenced public consultation on the revised draft A Guide to the Use of Australian Native Mammals in Biomedical Research and invited submissions regarding the proposed revisions.

A guide to the use of Australian Native Mammals in Biomedical Research (1-3) (1990) and A guide to the use of Australian Native Mammals in Biomedical Research, Section 4: Care of Individual Species (1995) were developed to ensure that the specific and unique needs of Australian native mammals were met when these animals are used in biomedical research. These two documents have been consolidated to one document, now titled A Guide to the Use of Australian Native Mammals in Biomedical Research. It is a technical guideline intended for use primarily by researchers working with Australian native mammals. The revision of A Guide to the Use of Australian Native Mammals in Biomedical Research seeks to ensure that the document continues to be a relevant, accurate and applicable guide.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm (AEST) Friday 25 May 2012.

For more information regarding draft revisions, and how to make a submission, please visit:

The primary goal of the DARPA Robotics Challenge program is to develop ground robotic capabilities to execute complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments. The program will focus on robots that can utilize available human tools, ranging from hand tools to vehicles.

The program aims to advance the key robotic technologies of supervised autonomy, mounted mobility, dismounted mobility, dexterity, strength, and platform endurance. Supervised autonomy will be developed to allow robot control by non-expert operators, to lower operator workload, and to allow effective operation despite low fidelity (low bandwidth, high latency, intermittent) communications.

In the DARPA Robotics Challenge, robots will compete with each other performing disaster response operations in representative scenarios that will likely include the following sequence of events:

  1. Drive a utility vehicle at the site
  2. Travel dismounted across rubble
  3. Remove debris blocking an entryway
  4. Open a door and enter a building
  5. Climb an industrial ladder and traverse an industrial walkway
  6. Use a tool to break through a concrete panel
  7. Locate and close a valve near a leaking pipe
  8. Replace a component such as a cooling pump

These are representative tasks and will likely be updated based on detailed future planning that will take into account safety, cost, performance, operational capabilities and needs.

Funding
Total amount of money to be awarded is up to US $34 million. Multiple awards are anticipated

Eligibility

Collaborative efforts/teaming are encouraged. Specific content, communications, networking, and team formation are the sole responsibility of the participants.

The “Security, Society, and the State” research programme targets new security-related issues that are prime examples of the post-Cold-War era but have been largely neglected in mainstream research.

The programme is intended to encourage junior scholars to pursue unconventional research agendas that are nonetheless crucial, while providing senior scholars with the opportunity to focus intensively on work in progress for a limited period. Moreover, the objective is to combine basic theoretical research with concepts that are applicable to present-day political issues of security policy.

Eligibility

Proposals are invited for existing research projects. The Foundation generally only accepts applications for research project grants from postdoctoral scholars at universities, other research institutes, or comparable institutions. The applicants must be actively involved in the research work of the project.

Funding
The maximum amount of funding is € 100.000 per project application. Applications for limited travel and material grants only will not be accepted.

The grants for research projects involve, depending on the type of project, research and PhD fellowships for project participants, travel and material expenses as well as academic conferences and workshops. The costs incurred by visiting (foreign) scholars can also be financed as part of a research project.

The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides USD $3.8 million to the Department of Defense Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP).
This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The MSRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research relevant to the prevention, etiology, pathogenesis, assessment, and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). The vision of the MSRP is to prevent the occurrence, cure, reverse, or slow the progression, and lessen the personal and societal impact of MS. The FY12 MSRP specifically encourages applications that address critical needs of the MS community as listed below:

  • Pathophysiological basis of disease progression
  • Gene-environment interactions in MS
  • Technological development of hardware and/or software instruments for clinical research data capture and modeling

Idea Award: The MSRP Idea Award promotes new ideas that are in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield high-impact findings and new avenues of investigation. This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/potentially high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries in understanding the causes and progression of MS and/or improvements in patient care and/or quality of life. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply and cost sharing/matching is not an eligibility requirement.

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are USD $400,000 plus indrect costs and the maximum period of performance is 2 years.

The OCRP is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Outcomes Consortium Development Award: The OCRP Outcomes Consortium Development Award supports a multi-institutional research effort conducted by leading ovarian cancer researchers and consumer advocates that specifically focuses on identifying and understanding predictors of disease outcomes in ovarian cancer patients.

Research projects proposed under the Outcomes Consortium Development Award must focus on predictors of disease outcomes, particularly for ovarian cancer patients who are long-term survivors. The research project should address overarching issues that have broad implications for the disease and risk management, such as risk factors at the individual level and systems level, treatment, toxicity, and dormancy. The research project should not focus merely on the study of specific molecular pathways or genes. The research project should be focused on identifying what is unique to long-term survivors (defined as those who are at least 10 years from initial diagnosis) as compared to short-term survivors.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent) are eligible to apply and cost sharing/matching is not an eligibility requirement.

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are USD $400,000 for direct costs plus indirect costs and the maximum period of performance is 2 years.

Submission (Pre-applications)
Note: A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (http://cdmrp.org) prior to the pre-application deadline of April 24, 2012. Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov.

AICR awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. They will consider pplications that include some clinical research in a project which is mostly basic or translational.  However, completely clinical applications, such as intervention studies, clinical trials or health care delivery research are beyond the remit of AICR.

Projects are for a maximum of three years and can include funding for research staff (post doctoral and/or PhD students), consumables, essential items of equipment and travel.

Funding
AICR does not have a formal upper limit for the total cost of an application, but it should be noted that most of the three-year grants we award have a total budget of £200,000 or less.

Submission
Applicants must register on the AICR on-line application system, which can be found at http://www.aicr.org.uk/applyingforagrant.stm, and can start an application at any
