The Arts Conference addresses a range of critically important issues and themes relating to the arts in society, including Art & Education, Creative Commons & Copyright, Art & Anthropology, and the Arts & Human Rights. In coordination with the Institute of Cultural Capital, the 2012 conference invites discussion and presentations around the special conference theme – The Art of the Event. Plenary speakers will include leading thinkers and practitioners in the arts who will address this theme, speaking on their backgrounds in arts and major events such as the Cultural Olympiad, Capital of Culture, Commonwealth games, Art fairs, and Biennials.

Call for Papers
The Arts Conference is a participants’ conference comprised of numerous parallel sessions and selected plenary sessions. Participants are invited to submit proposals as either 30-minute, 60-minute or 90-minute sessions. A virtual participation is also available if you are unable to attend the conference in-person. All proposals, presentations and papers must be in English.

Conference presenters may include contributors in all areas of the arts – artists, educators, graduate students, curators, writers, theorists, researchers, arts administrators and policymakers – with presentations in all disciplines (visual, performing, literary, and interdisciplinary genres). This is a Conference for any person with an interest in and a concern for art practice, public art, art theory, research and policy, curatorial and museum studies, and art education in any of its forms and at any of its sites.

The Department of Defence is seeking innovative industry proposals for participation in the Capability and Technology Demonstrator (CTD) Program.

The CTD Program improves Australia’s Defence capabilities by giving Australian and New Zealand industry opportunities to demonstrate new ideas and approaches related to using technology.

Proposals should address an area of Defence capability priority and are required to demonstrate the capability potential of a technology within three years.

Funding is typically in the $500k to $2M range over a period of 2-3 years

The University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University of South Australia are holding an Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans Workshop on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 June, 2012.
This interactive workshop is open to higher degree by research (HDR) / research by higher degree (RHD) students, who have commenced their program of study in the last 12 months at one of the three South Australian universities.

The workshop aims to give participants:

• an understanding of the ethical issues that may arise in research involving human participants (across the full spectrum from biological samples to whole populations);
• tools to analyse and address these issues;
• an understanding of what constitutes good practice in research;  and
• assistance in the preparation of applications to Human Research Ethics Committees.

Arthritis Australia offer grants valued between $10,000 and $50,000 for one year, to be used for research into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of arthritis. Awards are available to clinical, scientific and allied health professionals who work in universities, hospitals or recognised research institutes.

The objectives of the research and professional education program are:

The ASSA Workshops Program is a competitive program bestowing grants to assist social sciences researchers to convene a two-day, multidisciplinary research workshop.

Workshop Format
The Workshop format is interactive, normally held over two days, and includes a dinner at which further exchange and discussion can continue informally. Interdisciplinarity is expected and the topics and participants should reflect this.

It is expected that participants will include:

• established researchers and leaders in their areas of expertise
• early career scholars who are challenging and/or adding to debate

Expected Outcomes
The Academy expects dissemination of the workshop outcomes, through at least one of the following:

• Publication via a recognised publishing house
• Chapter/s in a publication, monograph or journal
• Published paper/s in professional journals
• On a university, institution or Academy website
• Media article (newspaper, radio or TV)

Eligibility
There must be at least two early career scholars who are Australia-based.

The SIEF will support scientific research that satisfies the following:

Multidisciplinary

 

The Asbestos Innovation fund has been established to sponsor programs and research to prevent and better manage asbestos exposure, as well as improve treatment for asbestos disease sufferers.

A diverse range of proposals may be funded, including but not limited to research in the areas of:

• communication and education
• workplace training solutions
• skills development programs
• warning and safety systems
• safe removal systems
• diagnostic, treatment and/or patient care practices
• compensation and support systems

Eligibility
Organisations that are eligible to apply for funding include:

• qualified researchers, scholars and health professionals affiliated with Australian post-secondary institutions, including hospitals and research institutions
• non-government organisations with an established research profile
• trade unions, industry or employer associations and their affiliates with an established research profile
• incorporated Associations and not-for-profit organisations with an established research profile
• incorporated non-Governmental organisations with an established research profile, and
• local government bodies or their equivalent

Other organisations, including industry bodies and private companies, wishing to be involved in the Asbestos Innovation Fund may do so in partnership with eligible organisations as identified above. Organisations seeking research-related grants of $10 000 or more will need to demonstrate a track record of delivering projects on time, within budget and with high quality/practical outcomes.

Funding
Allocation of funding will be dependent upon the quality and relevance of proposed projects and activities. National Disability Research and Development grants will be awarded to researchers for research that supports the National Disability Agreement, the National Disability Strategy and future reforms such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Eligibility
Applications must reflect the directions, foundations and principles for disability research as articulated in the National Disability Research and Development Agenda (the Agenda). Broad aims of the Agenda are to:

• Focus on activities that will result in practical benefits for people with disability and support the creation of a more inclusive Australia.
• Support the continued development of robust disability research.
• Influence other research programs to better facilitate the inclusion of disability issues in mainstream data collection, research, evaluations and reviews.
• Promote partnerships and collaboration within the disability research sector and with other research sectors.

No restrictions are placed on who may apply.

Funding & Duration
A total of $750,000 (ex GST) is available in 2012 for the open competitive funding round. A maximum amount of $100,000 per year will be available for each project (unless a compelling case is made to exceed this limit). Projects can run over more than one year. A proportion (approximately 20%) of the total funding can be approved for seed funding to prepare for grants applications through this funding or through other processes such as NHMRC and/or ARC Linkage grants.

This grant is designed to support the development of creative and innovative programmes for education (of the public or non-sleep health professionals) and/or outreach on sleep health-related research for a variety of audiences.

Specific types of sleep education research grants supported by this programme could include innovative educational approaches designed to:

• improve knowledge transfer to clinicians (non-sleep specialists), allied health and/or community health care providers about sleep and sleep disorders, or
• transfer knowledge gained from sleep and circadian rhythm research into the broad public arena, for example child care venues, schools, workplaces, aged care and community groups that may or may not be brought together around health issues

Applications may include:

• social marketing strategies
• research-practice partnership models
• community-based or clinic-based participatory research
• new models that foster partnerships among researchers
• providers and the public

Funding
Maximum of $20, 000 for one year. Proposals for a single $20,000 grant distributed over two years will also be considered.

Eligibility
This grant is open to individuals or small teams who work in Australia or New Zealand and the health education work must be undertaken in Australia or New Zealand. Proposals must have plans to bring sleep researchers together with appropriate communities of healthcare providers, health services, communities and/or other stakeholders.

Projects that develop educational strategies that are portable and sustainable and have built in metrics for demonstrating measurable outcomes and assess potential for adoption or replication in other settings (see for example http://www.re-aim.org) will be well regarded.

R01 - Research Program Grant

Biomedical research laboratories increasingly undertake a software development project to solve a problem of interest specifically related to that laboratory. These software packages sometimes become useful to a much broader community of users that can include translational and clinical researchers.

The goal of this program announcement is to support the continued development, maintenance, testing and evaluation of existing software.

The proposed work should apply best practices and proven methods for software design, construction, and implementation to extend the applicability of existing biomedical informatics/computational biology software to a broader biomedical research community.

Funding & Duration
Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the IC(s) provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds.

R21 - Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award

Applications are invited from institutions/organisations for research grants that propose to conduct exploratory/developmental clinical studies that will accelerate the development of effective interventions for prevention or treatment of overweight or obesity in adults and/or children. Exploratory epidemiological research with a goal of informing translational/clinical research will also be supported within this program.

Funding & Duration
Direct costs are limited to US $275,000 over an R21 two-year period, with no more than US $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year.

The vision of the ARP is to improve the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) now. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Awards offered within the ARP are as follows:

IDEA DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Preproposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.

• Supports the development of innovative, high-impact ideas that advance the understanding of ASD and lead to improved outcomes
• Preliminary data are required. Clinical trials are not allowed.
• Multiple Principal Investigator (PI) Option: Up to three investigators may collaborate on a single application, each of whom will be recognized as a PI and receive a separate award. Investigators are encouraged to submit their data to the National Database for Autism Research (NDAR), a secure bioinformatics platform for data-sharing.

Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is US $400,000 in direct costs (plus indirect costs). PILOT AWARD
Preproposal is required; application submission is by invitation only.

• Supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ASD forward.
• Preliminary data are not allowed. Clinical trials are not allowed.

The vision of the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) is to assist research into cancers not addressed in breast, prostate, lung (excluding mesothelioma), and ovarian cancer research programs currently executed by the DoD U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research for the following topic areas:

• Blood cancers
• Colorectal cancer
• Genetic cancer research
• Kidney cancer
• Listeria vaccine for cancer
• Melanoma and other skin cancers
• Mesothelioma

The primary purpose of the Career Development Award is to attract qualified and promising scientists early in their faculty careers and to give them the opportunity to establish themselves in areas that reflect the JDRF research emphasis areas. The Career Development Award is intended for individuals in a relatively early stage of their career. Ordinarily, their first degree (MD, PhD, DMD, DVM, or equivalent) will have been received at least three but not more than seven years before the award.

Early Career Patient-Oriented Diabetes Research Award
Funding: US $150,000
Duration: 5 years

The JDRF Early Career Patient-Oriented Diabetes Research Award will provide crucial support to investigators who plan to pursue a career in diabetes-related clinical investigation. These prestigious awards are made in the later stages of training and include the ability for recipients to transition to independent faculty or research appointments.

The successful candidate will have an MD or MD-PhD, hold an appointment or joint appointment in a subspecialty of clinical medicine, and conduct human clinical research. Candidates must hold an appointment or joint appointment in a clinical department.

The applicant must be sponsored by an investigator who is affiliated full-time with an accredited institution, who pursues clinical research, and who agrees to supervise the applicant's training. The sponsor does not necessarily need to have a background in diabetes, but the research project must be type 1 diabetes-related and patient-oriented.

Citizenship & Location
There are no citizenship requirements for the aforementioned programs. Fellowship research may be conducted at foreign and domestic, for-profit and nonprofit, and public and private organisations such as universities, colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state and local governments, and eligible agencies of the federal government.

Within the context of its Social Science Research Grant Program, WADA encourages collaborative research projects, proposals that provide for joint funding, and projects with specific cultural and/or regional perspectives.

This Fellowship is open to researchers based in eligible Australian institutions to pursue research into nutritional and/or lifestyle aspects of Macular Degeneration, consistent with the mission of the Foundation to reduce the incidence and impact of MD. Generally, their first degree (PhD, MD, DMD, DVM, or equivalent) will have been received no more than 5 years before the fellowship.  Applicants who have completed 1-3 years of postdoctoral training and now show extraordinary promise may wish to apply for this advanced award.

Short-Term Fellowships fund research visits of up to three monthsto laboratories in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The aim is to facilitate valuable collaborations with research groups applying techniques unavailable in their own laboratories. Short-Term Fellowships are not awarded for exchanges between two laboratories within the same country. Short-term Fellowships are intended for joint research work rather than consultations. For non-EU applicants, the Short-Term Fellowships are for a fixed duration of 90 days.

Eligibility
Applicants can be scientists with less than ten years of professional experience since finishing their PhD degree. Applicants can be pre-doctoral scientists who have not yet completed a PhD degree (or equivalent). Candidates with little research experience have a lower priority.

Short-Term Fellowships are awarded for exchanges between two laboratories in different countries. All applications must involve either a laboratory of origin or a receiving institute from one of the EMBC Member States.

The ETH Zurich Postdoctoral Fellowship Program supports incoming fellowships for postdoctoral researchers at the ETH Zurich. The program is intended to foster high-potential, young researchers who have already demonstrated excellence in terms of internationally competitive achievements in the early stages of their professional careers.

Eligibility
Applicants must have been awarded a doctoral degree within two years of the submission deadline from an institution other than the ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich. Applications have to be made jointly by the candidate and their host who must be an ETH Zurich Professor and who will act as a mentor of the fellow.

At the time of the relevant submission deadline, researchers must also not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) at either of the two institutions for more than six months prior to the reference date. The applicants need to have at least one scientific publication in a peer-reviewed journal or have been awarded a prize for their PhD thesis. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now accepting nominations for the Gates Vaccine Innovation Award to recognise, celebrate, and spur transformative ideas for achieving impact through the delivery of vaccines.

Prize
The award winner will be recognised with US $250,000 featured on the Foundation website, and personally acknowledged by Gates Foundation leadership.

Eligibility
The Award is open to individuals from any discipline who work on delivery of vaccines. Candidates from academic institutions, governments, health care facilities, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies may be nominated. Nominations focused on innovation in the areas of science and research & development are not eligible for consideration. This award is focused only on programs and policies associated with achieving impact through the delivery of vaccines.

Nominees will be assessed on three broad criteria:

Impact
The nominee should have achieved significant improvements in the prevention, control, or elimination of vaccine preventable disease

Innovation and creativity
The nominee should have applied imaginative and pioneering approaches to overcome difficult challenges to immunising children and achieving impact.

Scale

The OCRP Outcomes Consortium Development Award supports a multi-institutional research effort conducted by leading ovarian cancer researchers and consumer advocates that specifically focuses on identifying and understanding predictors of disease outcomes in ovarian cancer patients.

This effort will be executed through two separate award mechanisms: this FY12 Outcomes Consortium Development Award, which will enable the consortium to lay the groundwork for the research project, including proof of concept, and the FY14 Outcomes Consortium Award, which will support the execution of the full research project.

Funding & Duration
The maximum period of performance is 2 years. The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $400,000 plus indirect costs.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announces the second round of its Reinvent the Toilet Challenge designed to prototype a means of dealing effectively and cost-efficiently with human waste for the 2 billion people on earth who currently lack access to safe and affordable sanitation.

This Challenge intends to fund the concept development, design, and prototyping of a waterless, hygienic toilet that costs less than $0.05 per user per day.

Eight grants will be awarded to universities, amounting to a total of US $3 million.

The Australian Museum's Chadwick Biodiversity Fellowship provides an exciting opportunity for a recent PhD graduate to establish a career in biodiversity research.
This two year appointment enables the recipient to apply for grants and publish articles as well as network and collaborate with senior research scientists at the Australian Museum and other experts in the field.

The two year fellowship should commence on or about 1 July 2012. The recipient must be based at the Australian Museum.

Eligibility
Applicants should be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents. They should have been awarded their PhD in a biodiversity-related field consistent with the Australian Museum's Science Research Strategy 2007-2012 within the last 12-18 months. The Geddes Visiting Research Fellowship offers researchers up to $8,000 to visit and work as collaborators in research projects with Australian Museum Scientists.

Research fellows must be nominated by a staff member of the Australian Museum who is the leader of a research project. A diverse range of proposals may be funded, including but not limited to research in the areas of:

Eligibility
Organisations that are eligible to apply for funding include:

• qualified researchers, scholars and health professionals affiliated with Australian post-secondary institutions, including hospitals and research institutions
• non-government organisations with an established research profile
• trade unions, industry or employer associations and their affiliates with an established research profile
• incorporated Associations and not-for-profit organisations with an established research profile
• incorporated non-Governmental organisations with an established research profile, and
• local government bodies or their equivalent

Other organisations, including industry bodies and private companies, wishing to be involved in the Asbestos Innovation Fund may do so in partnership with eligible organisations as identified above. The aim of this Program Area is to support Australian urban and regional communities to live sustainably and preserve biodiversity. Environment & Conservation grants are of two types, listed below.

Grants up to $20,000
The aim of these grants it to contribute to projects that look to leverage support from multiple stakeholders with a view to:

• increasing public awareness of environmental challenges facing urban and rural Australia, and/or
  
• encouraging the development of policies that are committed jointly to the economic and ecological sustainability of our communities, or

Biomedical research laboratories increasingly undertake a software development project to solve a problem of interest specifically related to that laboratory. These software packages sometimes become useful to a much broader community of users that can include translational and clinical researchers.

The goal of this program announcement is to support the continued development, maintenance, testing and evaluation of existing software.

The proposed work should apply best practices and proven methods for software design, construction, and implementation to extend the applicability of existing biomedical informatics/computational biology software to a broader biomedical research community.

Funding & Duration
Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the IC(s) provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds.

The Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia University Research Grants are scholarships offered to honours or postgraduate students at Australian Universities, for research projects of direct relevance to the conservation of Australian wildlife - plant or animal.

Funding
Each year, 10 x $1000 grants are awarded. Grants may be used for the purchase of equipment or consumables, travel expenses related to field of research, or attendance at conferences for the presentation of research.

The primary goal of the DARPA Robotics Challenge program is to develop ground robotic capabilities to execute complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments. The program will focus on robots that can utilize available human tools, ranging from hand tools to vehicles.

The program aims to advance the key robotic technologies of supervised autonomy, mounted mobility, dismounted mobility, dexterity, strength, and platform endurance. Supervised autonomy will be developed to allow robot control by non-expert operators, to lower operator workload, and to allow effective operation despite low fidelity (low bandwidth, high latency, intermittent) communications.

In the DARPA Robotics Challenge, robots will compete with each other performing disaster response operations in representative scenarios that will likely include the following sequence of events:

1. Drive a utility vehicle at the site
2. Travel dismounted across rubble
3. Remove debris blocking an entryway
4. Open a door and enter a building
5. Climb an industrial ladder and traverse an industrial walkway
6. Use a tool to break through a concrete panel
7. Locate and close a valve near a leaking pipe
8. Replace a component such as a cooling pump

These are representative tasks and will likely be updated based on detailed future planning that will take into account safety, cost, performance, operational capabilities and needs.

Funding
Total amount of money to be awarded is up to US $34 million. Multiple awards are anticipated

Eligibility
Collaborative efforts/teaming are encouraged. Specific content, communications, networking, and team formation are the sole responsibility of the participants.
