WORKSHOP - 1.5 days Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans
Tuesday 12 June, (9.30am - 4pm) Lunch provided Wednesday 13 June (9.30am - 1pm) University of Adelaide, North Terrace Campus
The University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and Flinders University of South Australia are holding an Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans Workshop on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 June, 2012. This interactive workshop is open to higher degree by research (HDR) / research by higher degree (RHD) students, who have commenced their program of study in the last 12 months at one of the three South Australian universities.
The workshop aims to give participants:
- an understanding of the ethical issues that may arise in research involving human participants (across the full spectrum from biological samples to whole populations);
- tools to analyse and address these issues;
- an understanding of what constitutes good practice in research; and
- assistance in the preparation of applications to Human Research Ethics Committees.
Participants who attended previous workshops have commented:
“ An excellent course...highly necessary for beginning researchers” “I am now much more confident to proceed with the ethics approval process and understand this as a useful contribution to my research” “I think it is great that the 3 universities get together and provide this seminar. Well done!”
Current HDR students who have research projects which require human research ethics approval are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop.
The workshop is free and places are limited. Online registration is essential.

R01 - Research Program Grant
Biomedical research laboratories increasingly undertake a software development project to solve a problem of interest specifically related to that laboratory. These software packages sometimes become useful to a much broader community of users that can include translational and clinical researchers.
The goal of this program announcement is to support the continued development, maintenance, testing and evaluation of existing software.
The proposed work should apply best practices and proven methods for software design, construction, and implementation to extend the applicability of existing biomedical informatics/computational biology software to a broader biomedical research community.
Funding & Duration Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the IC(s) provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds.
Eligibility Non-U.S. Organisations are able to apply. Please refer to the FOA guidelines for a detailed overview of eligibility requirements.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, better known as LAM, is a rare lung disease. Scientists now estimate that as many as 250,000 women worldwide may have LAM, but are currently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with asthma, emphysema, or pulmonary bronchitis.
The LAM Fellowship Award is intended to support postdoctoral level investigators (MD or PhD) who will be performing LAM research in the laboratory of an established scientist who is an expert in areas which are directly pertinent to LAM. The award is generally not available to individuals who have attained faculty rank, or who are seeking transition funds for the establishment of a laboratory in a new setting.
It is expected that the LAM fellow will devote essentially full-time and in no case less than 80% time to the proposed research. The awardee may undertake limited administrative, teaching, and clinical responsibilities if they are directly related to the nature of the research being supported.
Sponsorship
The sponsor or scientific mentor should be a recognised authority in a field of research pertinent to LAM and possess the adequate laboratory and training resources.
Funding & Duration
LAM Fellowships provide a maximum of $50,000 per year, renewable for two additional years. More than 50% of the funds must be used for fellow salary support, but exact apportioning of this award for research and salary support is to be determined by the awardee and his/her department. No overhead indirect costs are provided, but fringe benefits may be included.
LAM Fellowship Awards are granted for three years, subject to annual reviews. Continued funding in the second and third years is based on demonstration of satisfactory progress and the availability of funds. The goal of this award is to enable investigators to gather sufficient preliminary data to apply for more substantial funding from federal agencies.
Eligibility
Applications are welcomed from investigators of all nationalities, but candidates must possess visas which allow for completion of the proposed project in the original laboratory.
Submission
LOI's are to be submitted directly to the Sponsor by the external due date of 30 July 2012.
Please send a copy of your LOI to Dr Don McMaster, by emailing don.mcmaster@adelaide.edu.au.

The primary goal of the DARPA Robotics Challenge program is to develop ground robotic capabilities to execute complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments. The program will focus on robots that can utilize available human tools, ranging from hand tools to vehicles.
The program aims to advance the key robotic technologies of supervised autonomy, mounted mobility, dismounted mobility, dexterity, strength, and platform endurance. Supervised autonomy will be developed to allow robot control by non-expert operators, to lower operator workload, and to allow effective operation despite low fidelity (low bandwidth, high latency, intermittent) communications.
In the DARPA Robotics Challenge, robots will compete with each other performing disaster response operations in representative scenarios that will likely include the following sequence of events:
- Drive a utility vehicle at the site
- Travel dismounted across rubble
- Remove debris blocking an entryway
- Open a door and enter a building
- Climb an industrial ladder and traverse an industrial walkway
- Use a tool to break through a concrete panel
- Locate and close a valve near a leaking pipe
- Replace a component such as a cooling pump
These are representative tasks and will likely be updated based on detailed future planning that will take into account safety, cost, performance, operational capabilities and needs.
Funding Total amount of money to be awarded is up to US $34 million. Multiple awards are anticipated
Eligibility Collaborative efforts/teaming are encouraged. Specific content, communications, networking, and team formation are the sole responsibility of the participants.
