This forum is being presented by the Royal Adelaide Hospital's Human Research Ethics Committee.
Wednesday 6 June 2012
12:00 pm - 1:45 pm
Robson Theatre, Level 1, Eleanor Harrald Building
University of Adelaide, North Terrace
Ethics Applications
Under this new process, the submission of applications for Ethical Review is through Online Forms using the NEAF application. This forum will present basic information on the new process and how it will affect Investigators and Study Coordinators. Processes in development for some low and negligible risk research will also be discussed.
Site Specific Assessments
In addition to Ethical Review, SA Health requires that a Site Specific Assessment (SSA) be undertaken at the sites in which the studies are to be run. The SSA Form, also to be submitted through Online Forms, considers a range of research governance issues, including relevant approvals, resources, financial and human resources to undertake the project successfully at this site. The completion of a SSA is a requirement for all research taking place within the SA public health system. This is inclusive of a single site and multi-site research. The new process is in commencement phase, and must be operational for all submissions from 1st July 2012.
Within this forum there will be ample time to ask questions or provide feedback.
Study Coordinators are particularly welcome but Investigators and others are also welcome to attend.

The PCFA encourage and support their interest in prostate cancer research through a research grants program.
The Foundation is especially seeking applications to address its priority funding areas, specifically for projects which aim to:
- Discover the genetic and cellular factors which initiate and/or perpetuate prostate cancer (PCa)
- Discover, develop and clinically validate new, non-invasive tests to detect PCa, and/or to determine whether a patient's cancer is surgically curable
- Discover, develop and clinically validate new biomarkers that predict the future clinical course of PCa and/or the response to future chemotherapy
- Discover, and validate through preclinical and clinical trials, novel molecular targets for chemotherapy of locally-invasive or metastatic PCa, including androgen-independent cancers
- Develop new treatment strategies for PCa, especially locally-invasive or metastatic cancers
- Undertake research, which if successful, will provide immediate improvements in the quality of life of patients with PCa, especially those with advanced PCa, including studies of the families and carers of men affected by prostate cancer, and studies of the psychological burden of prostate cancer to those men, their families and their caregivers.

The Academy provides funding of up to $10,000 as well as the use the Shine Dome free of charge as a venue to host conferences, the themes of which must align themselves with the following available schemes:
Boden Research Conferences (Biological Sciences)
With the support of the late Dr Alex Boden, FAA, the Academy has established a series of small specialist conferences in the biological sciences to enable active research workers in rapidly advancing fields to discuss current advances and problems.
Please note: under this scheme, conferences that are one of a continuing series are less likely to gain support unless they specifically address a newly emerging theme or topic within the broader area of the series.
Elizabeth and Frederick White Research Conferences (Physical Sciences)
With the support of the late Lady White, MBBS and the late Sir Frederick White, FAA, FRS, the Academy has established a series of research conferences in the physical and mathematical sciences related to the solid Earth, the terrestrial oceans, the Earth's atmosphere, solar-terrestrial science, space sciences and astronomy.
The purpose of the conferences is to advance at the most fundamental level of the understanding of the subject, to introduce to Australian research new aspects or directions, and to encourage participation of overseas scientists.
Please note: organisers are asked to make an undertaking on acceptance of an offer of funding from the Academy to call their conference an Elizabeth and Frederick White Conference and to advertise it as such.
Fenner Conferences on the Environment
With the support of Professor Frank Fenner, FAA, FRS, and the late Mrs Fenner, the Academy has established a series of environmental conferences on the environment and conservation issues in Australia and its environs.
The purpose of these conferences is to bring together those with relevant scientific, administrative and policy expertise to consider current environmental and conservation problems in Australia, thereby contributing to the formation of policies that can alleviate some of these problems.
The organisers of all approved conferences are responsible for the organisation of the conference, and the sponsoring scientific society(ies) are responsible for the funding allocated to the conference.

The 2012 scholarship award will be for $8,119 and can be used towards any area of research that fits the General Scholarship Criteria, listed below)
RSPCA Australia Scholarship for Humane Animal Production Research
This scholarship category is available for individual research projects that are related to the development of humane alternative animal production systems. The 2012 scholarship award will be for $8,119 and is available to full-time or part-time students in Australian tertiary institutions. The National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund promotes quality evidence-based practice in drug law enforcement to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of licit and illicit drug use in Australian society. A key aim of NDLERF is to promote collaboration between the Law Enforcement Sector and Researchers. The Fund functions within the broader context provided by the National Drug Strategic Framework.
The NDLERF Board of Management invites applications from researchers for projects which:
- advance an understanding of the operation of licit and illicit substance markets, including interactions between the markets surrounding various substances
- describe the specific nature, extent and impact of substance abuse on the community and policing
- consider the effect of interventions and strategies put in place to counteract the impact of substance misuse
- assist in the development of innovative technologies and/or tools, techniques or methods which will enhance the sector's response to drug law enforcement
Funding & Duration
Due to the fast-moving environment of drug law enforcement, The NDLERF Board of Management will increasingly seek to fund shorter, rather than longer projects. That said, the Board also recognises some research topics may not lend themselves to projects of shorter duration, and may have longer term strategic benefit to law enforcement. Researchers are encouraged to apply for funding for such projects. In doing so, however, applicants must strongly justify the need for lengthy projects and demonstrate the longer-term practical operational or strategic value to the law enforcement sector of the proposed project.
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012
Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
Submission
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the NDLERF Secretariat prior to submission of applications to the NDLERF Board of Management.
Please submit a hardcopy of finalised proposals to the Research Branch, accompanied by a signed and completed hardcopy of the University's Grant Application Coversheet.
Hardcopies of applications may be sent to:
