This forum is being presented by the Royal Adelaide Hospital's Human Research Ethics Committee.
Wednesday 6 June 2012
12:00 pm - 1:45 pm
Robson Theatre, Level 1, Eleanor Harrald Building
University of Adelaide, North Terrace
Ethics Applications
Under this new process, the submission of applications for Ethical Review is through Online Forms using the NEAF application. This forum will present basic information on the new process and how it will affect Investigators and Study Coordinators. Processes in development for some low and negligible risk research will also be discussed.
Site Specific Assessments
In addition to Ethical Review, SA Health requires that a Site Specific Assessment (SSA) be undertaken at the sites in which the studies are to be run. The SSA Form, also to be submitted through Online Forms, considers a range of research governance issues, including relevant approvals, resources, financial and human resources to undertake the project successfully at this site. The completion of a SSA is a requirement for all research taking place within the SA public health system. This is inclusive of a single site and multi-site research. The new process is in commencement phase, and must be operational for all submissions from 1st July 2012.
Within this forum there will be ample time to ask questions or provide feedback.
Study Coordinators are particularly welcome but Investigators and others are also welcome to attend.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund promotes quality evidence-based practice in drug law enforcement to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of licit and illicit drug use in Australian society. A key aim of NDLERF is to promote collaboration between the Law Enforcement Sector and Researchers. The Fund functions within the broader context provided by the National Drug Strategic Framework.
The NDLERF Board of Management invites applications from researchers for projects which:
- advance an understanding of the operation of licit and illicit substance markets, including interactions between the markets surrounding various substances
- describe the specific nature, extent and impact of substance abuse on the community and policing
- consider the effect of interventions and strategies put in place to counteract the impact of substance misuse
- assist in the development of innovative technologies and/or tools, techniques or methods which will enhance the sector's response to drug law enforcement
Funding & Duration
Due to the fast-moving environment of drug law enforcement, The NDLERF Board of Management will increasingly seek to fund shorter, rather than longer projects. That said, the Board also recognises some research topics may not lend themselves to projects of shorter duration, and may have longer term strategic benefit to law enforcement. Researchers are encouraged to apply for funding for such projects. In doing so, however, applicants must strongly justify the need for lengthy projects and demonstrate the longer-term practical operational or strategic value to the law enforcement sector of the proposed project.
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012
Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
Submission
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the NDLERF Secretariat prior to submission of applications to the NDLERF Board of Management.
Please submit a hardcopy of finalised proposals to the Research Branch, accompanied by a signed and completed hardcopy of the University's Grant Application Coversheet.
Hardcopies of applications may be sent to:

The vision of the FY12 DMDRP is to extend and improve the function, quality of life, and lifespan for all individuals diagnosed with DMD. As such, the DMDRP is seeking to fund research to accelerate the development and clinical testing of new therapeutics and increase our understanding of successes and failures in clinical trials.
Individual award mechanisms within this program are as follows:
INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED RESEARCH AWARD
This award supports studies that will make an important contribution toward understanding mechanisms of initiation or progression, and/or improving patient care for DMD. Research projects should focus on translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in DMD into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s firsthand knowledge from providing care to patients.
Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $525,000 plus indirect costs. If requesting an Optional Qualified Collaborator, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $675,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.
For more detailed information, please visit the Investigator-Initiated Research Award Guidelines
THERAPEUTIC IDEA AWARD
This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in DMD therapeutics. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Presentation of preliminary data is not consistent with the intent of the Therapeutic Idea Award mechanism. While the inclusion of preliminary data is not prohibited, the strength of the application should not rely on preliminary data.
Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $300,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 2 years.
For more detailed information, please visit the Therapeutic Idea Award Guidelines

The vision of the SCIRP is to advance the treatment of spinal cord injury and its consequences. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
Individual award mechanisms within this program are as follows:
CLINICAL TRIAL AWARD
Funding from this award mechanism must support a clinical trial and may not be used for pre-clinical research studies. A clinical trial is defined as a prospective accrual of human subjects where an intervention (e.g., device, drug, biologic, surgical procedure, rehabilitative DoD FY12 Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Trial Award 5 modality, behavioural intervention, or other) is tested with a human subject for a measurable outcome with respect to exploratory information, safety, effectiveness, and/or efficacy.
Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $750,000 plus indirect costs. More cost-effective studies that do not request the full available amount are encouraged. The maximum period of performance is 4 years.
For more detailed information, please visit the Clinical Trial Award Guidelines
INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED AWARD
This award is intended to support studies that have the potential to make an important contribution to SCI research and/or patient care. Projects should be innovative, address an Area of Encouragement, and impact the health care needs of military Service members, Veterans, and/or their family members and caregivers. All applications must specifically and clearly address the military relevance of the proposed research. Collaboration with military researchers and clinicians is encouraged.
Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $400,000 plus indirect costs. More cost-effective studies that do not request the full available funding amount are encouraged. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.
For more detailed information, please visit the Investigator-Initiated Award Guidelines
TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD
This award supports translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in spinal cord injury research into clinical applications. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. While the ultimate goal of translational research is to move an observation forward into clinical application, PIs should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. The research plan must involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic and clinical science.
Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $750,000 plus indirect costs. More cost-effective studies that do not request the full available funding amount are encouraged. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

The purpose of this FOA is to encourage the submission of applications proposing to use human stem cells to develop methods for generating replacement cells and transplantation techniques for the treatment of ocular diseases and disorders. Studies may include elucidating the mechanisms required to direct stem cell differentiation into specialized ocular cell lineages. The regenerative application of human stem cells offers a promising way to restore lost vision due to injury and disease. Many of the leading causes of visual and ocular disorders are due in part to the loss of photoreceptors, inner retinal neurons, or corneal epithelial cells. Preliminary studies demonstrate that cell-based therapies may have the potential to treat ophthalmic diseases including corneal degeneration and inflammation, glaucoma, and vascular and neurodegenerative diseases of the retina.
This initiative will support basic and preclinical studies leading to the development of differentiated human stem cells for treating ocular diseases and disorders. Studies may include (1) elucidating the mechanisms required to direct stem cell differentiation into specialized ocular cell lineages, (2) developing methods for the generation of replacement ocular cells and tissues, and (3) identifying factors required for optimal transplantation of stem cell-derived lineages, resulting in functional regeneration.
Only studies using human stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (hESC), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), and adult stem cells, will be responsive to this announcement. All human ES cell lines proposed for these studies must be listed in the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry. This program will not support animal stem cell research nor human clinical trials.
Funding
Applicants may request up to $250,000 annual direct costs. Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project.

The primary objective of the Brain Foundation Research Grants is to support individual researchers and research teams to conduct the highest quality research in brain illnesses and neurological disorders as well as brain and spinal injuries. A subsidiary objective is to provide opportunities for early career researchers to gain initiating funding for projects with potential.
Funding (General)
The total amount available for distribution depends on the income of the Brain Foundation in that year. As a guide, the grants awarded in 2011 were up to $40,000 each.
Specific Funding available in 2012
- Each year Headache Australia, a division of the Brain Foundation makes funds available for research into chronic headaches and migraines
- Research into Dystonia
- Research into Parkinson’s Disease
- Research into Muscular Dystrophy
- Research into Brain Tumours
New Specific Funding for 2012
There will be one grant for a Neurological trainee and one for a Neurosurgical trainee.
Although funds are available for all research categories and the above specific areas, grants will only be awarded if they meet the assessment criteria of scientific quality and significance and/or innovation.
Eligibility
The grants are open to competition nationally and all researchers in Australia are eligible to apply, however consideration, subject to merit, is given to:
- Early career investigators, either clinicians or neuroscientists, to help them establish an ongoing research program
- Innovative projects
- Pilot studies to enable a research project to be developed such that it could be supported by a recognised grant-giving agency in subsequent years
- Bridging support for a clinician who has a valid reason for being unable to make an application to a conventional grant-giving agency
- Supplementation of an existing grant from, for example, NHMRC, particularly for grant applications that were successful but funded inadequately to allow satisfactory progress to be made. In this instance applicants should submit the reports on their project from that grant-giving agency, together with ratings, details of the requesting and awarded budget, and full justification for the unfunded items

This Request for Proposals (RFP) calls for research that can inform current discussions about data-based educational reforms and seeking to stimulate new thinking about how to use data in the classroom.

Funding & Duration
The Foundation anticipates funding projects through awards ranging from US $40,000 to US $300,000, covering direct and limited indirect costs for up to three years of work. In exceptional circumstances the Foundation will consider studies with larger budgets. Budgets must be proposed in U.S. Dollars.
Eligibility
Investigators applying for a Research Grant must have an earned doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or appropriate experience in an education research-related profession.
Applicants must be affiliated with a college, university, research facility, school district, or cultural institution that is willing to serve as the fiscal agent if the grant is awarded.
