The MND Association supports biomedical research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and related conditions, in all relevant disciplines, and is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that funds and promotes global research into Motor Neurone Disease.

Grant Objective
The purpose of the Biomedical Project Grants is to support a single project: a piece of work designed to answer a single question or a small group of related questions.

Funding & Duration
Applications for project grants should not exceed £85,000 per annum (and £255,000 in total) without the prior agreement of the MND Association.

Applications of up to three years will be considered. Applications for less than two years must include a named researcher with the relevant expertise, familiar with the laboratory. The continuation of a grant within this period will be subject to annual review after the submission of a progress report, which is required at the completion of each year of the project.

Eligibility
Applications submitted by researchers based at institutions outside of the UK and Ireland must meet the following criteria: the project must be unique in concept or design, and the project must involve a significant aspect of collaboration with a UK institute.

Please visit the Biomedical Research Project Guidelines for more details regarding eligibility.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund promotes quality evidence-based practice in drug law enforcement to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of licit and illicit drug use in Australian society. A key aim of NDLERF is to promote collaboration between the Law Enforcement Sector and Researchers. The Fund functions within the broader context provided by the National Drug Strategic Framework.

The NDLERF Board of Management invites applications from researchers for projects which:

  • advance an understanding of the operation of licit and illicit substance markets, including interactions between the markets surrounding various substances

  • describe the specific nature, extent and impact of substance abuse on the community and policing

  • consider the effect of interventions and strategies put in place to counteract the impact of substance misuse

  • assist in the development of innovative technologies and/or tools, techniques or methods which will enhance the sector's response to drug law enforcement

Funding & Duration
Due to the fast-moving environment of drug law enforcement, The NDLERF Board of Management will increasingly seek to fund shorter, rather than longer projects. That said, the Board also recognises some research topics may not lend themselves to projects of shorter duration, and may have longer term strategic benefit to law enforcement. Researchers are encouraged to apply for funding for such projects. In doing so, however, applicants must strongly justify the need for lengthy projects and demonstrate the longer-term practical operational or strategic value to the law enforcement sector of the proposed project.

This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

Submission
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the NDLERF Secretariat prior to submission of applications to the NDLERF Board of Management.

The vision of the FY12 DMDRP is to extend and improve the function, quality of life, and lifespan for all individuals diagnosed with DMD. As such, the DMDRP is seeking to fund research to accelerate the development and clinical testing of new therapeutics and increase our understanding of successes and failures in clinical trials.

Individual award mechanisms within this program are as follows:

INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED RESEARCH AWARD
This award supports studies that will make an important contribution toward understanding mechanisms of initiation or progression, and/or improving patient care for DMD. Research projects should focus on translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in DMD into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s firsthand knowledge from providing care to patients.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $525,000 plus indirect costs. If requesting an Optional Qualified Collaborator, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $675,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Investigator-Initiated Research Award Guidelines

THERAPEUTIC IDEA AWARD
This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in DMD therapeutics. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Presentation of preliminary data is not consistent with the intent of the Therapeutic Idea Award mechanism. While the inclusion of preliminary data is not prohibited, the strength of the application should not rely on preliminary data.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $300,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 2 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Therapeutic Idea Award Guidelines

Submission

The vision of the SCIRP is to advance the treatment of spinal cord injury and its consequences.  This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Individual award mechanisms within this program are as follows:

CLINICAL TRIAL AWARD
Funding from this award mechanism must support a clinical trial and may not be used for pre-clinical research studies. A clinical trial is defined as a prospective accrual of human subjects where an intervention (e.g., device, drug, biologic, surgical procedure, rehabilitative DoD FY12 Spinal Cord Injury Clinical Trial Award 5 modality, behavioural intervention, or other) is tested with a human subject for a measurable outcome with respect to exploratory information, safety, effectiveness, and/or efficacy.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $750,000 plus indirect costs. More cost-effective studies that do not request the full available amount are encouraged. The maximum period of performance is 4 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Clinical Trial Award Guidelines

INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED AWARD
This award is intended to support studies that have the potential to make an important contribution to SCI research and/or patient care. Projects should be innovative, address an Area of Encouragement, and impact the health care needs of military Service members, Veterans, and/or their family members and caregivers. All applications must specifically and clearly address the military relevance of the proposed research. Collaboration with military researchers and clinicians is encouraged.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $400,000 plus indirect costs. More cost-effective studies that do not request the full available funding amount are encouraged. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Investigator-Initiated Award Guidelines

TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH AWARD
This award supports translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in spinal cord injury research into clinical applications. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. While the ultimate goal of translational research is to move an observation forward into clinical application, PIs should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. The research plan must involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic and clinical science.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $750,000 plus indirect costs. More cost-effective studies that do not request the full available funding amount are encouraged. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Translational Research Award Guidelines

The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations, and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognised, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy.

Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations' thinking in return.

Funding

Full-time fellows based in the United States will receive a stipend of US $80,000 or US $100,000, depending on work experience, seniority, and current income. Stipends will be prorated for part-time fellows.

For fellows based elsewhere, appropriate adjustments will be made to reflect the cost of living in those countries. The stipend does not necessarily equal the applicant's current salary. In certain cases, fellows will receive additional financial support to enable them to meet the residency expectation.

In addition to the stipend, fellows will receive a project budget. That budget may include expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance.

Eligibility
The fellowship considers applicants from all parts of the world. Project themes should cut across at least two areas of interest to the Open Society Foundations. Among these are human rights, government transparency, access to information and to justice, and the promotion of civil society and social inclusion.

Please refer to the Fellowship Guidelines for more details.

Placement & Duration
Most fellows spend a portion of their term in one or more Open Society Foundation offices. Fellows may work out of multiple offices during their term.

Fellows who wish to work on their project in a country in which they do not have citizenship must satisfy and comply with applicable visa requirements. The fellowship program will help fellows obtain necessary visas and covers all associated costs.

Though most fellowship terms are for one year, the program will consider requests for shorter or longer durations. Slight preference is given to applications for full-time fellowships, but the program will consider applicants who can only work part-time on their projects.

This award is intended as a recognition of excellence in educational research by doctoral students. It is seen by the Association as a way of recognising the high quality contribution made to educational knowledge by graduate students, and at the same time promoting dissemination and furthering of research.

The main criterion for assessment of excellence in doctoral research in education will be the contribution made to theoretical, empirical, and/or methodological knowledge in education. In particular, preference will be given to studies which make a conceptual advance in educational theory, policy and practice, which point to the methods of improving educational practice or pioneer innovation, which contribute through disciplined research to knowledge on which new educational practices may be based, or which contribute to advances in methodology of educational research, evaluation and dissemination.

Anyone who has been awarded a doctoral degree from an Australian institution in the two years prior to June 30 in the year of the award is eligible. Theses accepted for the degree after this date may be nominated in the following year.

Submission
A pre-application (pre-proposal) is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website prior to 3 July 2012*
