CONFERENCE
Monday 26 – Tuesday 27
November 2012
Shine Dome: Australian Academy of Science, Canberra

This Second Australian Earth System Outlook Conference, open to all, will explore a small selection of globally significant “ticking time bombs” which pose risks of unmanageable undesirable change unless anticipatory actions are taken that fall well outside the corrective capacity of the invisible hand of economic market forces.

For the two-day meeting, four major themes have been selected for discussion that have tipping point potential, partly but not entirely involving climate change and biodiversity. These themes are:

  • The mismatch between actual investment commitments in future fossil fuel infrastructure and the world’s leading governments’ recognition, in the Copenhagen Declaration, of the scientific view that the increase in global temperature ought not to exceed 2 degrees (Convened by Mr Ian Dunlop)

  • Polar deglaciation and its repercussions for global sea level (Convened by Drs Ian Allison and Tas van Ommen)

  • Interactive effects of the multiple environmental pressures on the Great Barrier Reef (Convened by Profs Terry Hughes and Brian Walker)

  • Long term global food security risks (Convened by Prof Will Steffen and Dr Roger Gifford)

Poster Presentation

There will be opportunity to present posters on Earth System Science results and issues.

DVA’s Applied Research Program (ARP) commissions research that contributes to the development of improved policies and service delivery, and/or enables the Department to better identify the health and wellbeing needs of the veteran community.

Suitable proposals will address one or more of DVA's research priorities.

Funding
The ARP has an ongoing budget of approximately $2.4 million per annum. Around 30 projects are running at any point in time with 10 to 20 new project approvals per year. Two assessment rounds are conducted each year to allocate the funding and projects can cross a number of financial years.

Funded projects are conducted under a services agreement (contract) between DVA and the research organisation.

Eligibility
There are no specific eligibility requirements (such as Australian citizenship). Services Agreements for ARP projects are between DVA and the organisation for which the Principal Researcher will be working at the time of the project. Most ARP projects are delivered by Australian universities or in some cases other expert research providers.

Please refer to the DVA ARP Information for Researchers for more details.

AICR awards grants to support fundamental or translational research into the causes, mechanisms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.

Funding & Duration
AICR does not have a formal upper limit for the total cost of an application, but it should be noted that most of the three-year grants wawarded have a total budget of £200,000 or less.

The vision of the FY12 DMDRP is to extend and improve the function, quality of life, and lifespan for all individuals diagnosed with DMD. As such, the DMDRP is seeking to fund research to accelerate the development and clinical testing of new therapeutics and increase our understanding of successes and failures in clinical trials.

Individual award mechanisms within this program are as follows:

INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED RESEARCH AWARD
This award supports studies that will make an important contribution toward understanding mechanisms of initiation or progression, and/or improving patient care for DMD. Research projects should focus on translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in DMD into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s firsthand knowledge from providing care to patients.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $525,000 plus indirect costs. If requesting an Optional Qualified Collaborator, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $675,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Investigator-Initiated Research Award Guidelines

THERAPEUTIC IDEA AWARD
This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in DMD therapeutics. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Presentation of preliminary data is not consistent with the intent of the Therapeutic Idea Award mechanism. While the inclusion of preliminary data is not prohibited, the strength of the application should not rely on preliminary data.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $300,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 2 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Therapeutic Idea Award Guidelines

The LCRP Concept Award mechanism supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to lung cancer. The Concept Award is not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project but, instead, allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations.

This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Applications must describe how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge of lung cancer or create an entirely new avenue for investigation.

Funding & Duration

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $100,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 1 year.

Please refer to the Concept Award Guidelines for more details regarding eligibility and selection criteria.

Submission
A pre-application (pre-proposal) is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website prior to 9 Aug 2012*

R01 - Research Project Grant
Project To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing their specific interest areas and competencies.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), encourages research projects on non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) and their targets in preneoplastic lesions and early stage cancers. This FOA also encourages research projects to assess the usefulness of stable microRNAs (miRNAs) and ncRNAs to predict progression to cancer and as biomarkers for early cancer detection and screening.

Building on both basic and biomarker research on microRNAs (miRNA), this FOA will further promote research on all classes of ncRNAs and support the translation of stable miRNAs into cancer screening or diagnostic tests.
