The ARC has announced a new Special Research Initiative for a Science of Learning Centre. 'Special Research Initiatives' are established to address specific research priorities and/or build capacity in strategically important areas.

The Special Research Initiative for a Science of Learning Research Centre provides funding to Eligible Organisations to support a centre that will undertake cross-disciplinary research programs in the human learning process. This Centre will
provide synergies between researchers and community institutions and educational providers and will cover a comprehensive range of geographic, demographic and socio-economic groups including Indigenous communities.

Funding Rules for the Initiative are available on the ARC website.

Please visit the Science of Learning Research Centre page or the media release for more information.

The ARC will advise of the opening of proposals shortly.
The University’s deadline for Full Proposals is 5.00pm Friday 14 September 2012.

If you have any questions regarding this Initiative, please email arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au.

The European Commission announced the 2013 Work Programme of the EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7). The last set of calls for proposals under FP7 will provide €8.1 billion for projects and ideas that will boost Europe's competitiveness and address key issues such as human health, environmental protection and challenges resulting from growing urbanisation and waste management.

All areas of the 2013 Work Programme are generally open to Australian research institutions. In most cases, however, Australian institutions have to bring their own funding unless their participation is deemed essential for the project.

There are targeted cooperation opportunities, explicitly encouraging Australian participation, or referring to Australia, in the following areas (call reference in bold):

  • Health: Diabetes/Obesity and Chronic Diseases - FP7-HEALTH.2013.4.1-5 and Coordination and Support Action on Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (no call code)

  • Knowledge-based Bioeconomy: Fisheries and Food & Health - KBBE.2013.1.2-08 and KBBE.2013.2.2-02

  • Energy: two topics on Carbon Capture and Storage - ENERGY.2013.5.1-2 and ENERGY.2013.6.1.1

  • Information and Communication Technology: Trustworthy ICT and International Partnership Building - ICT-2013.1.5 Trustworthy ICT and ICT-2013.10.3

  • Transport: High-Speed Civil Air Transport -  AAT.2013.8-2

  • Social Science and Humanities:  Multilingual Policies - SSH.2013.5.2-1

  • International Cooperation: Bi-regional coordination of S&T cooperation in the Pacific region - FP7-INCO-2013-1 (INCO-NET)

CONFERENCE
Monday 26 – Tuesday 27
November 2012
Shine Dome: Australian Academy of Science, Canberra

This Second Australian Earth System Outlook Conference, open to all, will explore a small selection of globally significant “ticking time bombs” which pose risks of unmanageable undesirable change unless anticipatory actions are taken that fall well outside the corrective capacity of the invisible hand of economic market forces.

For the two-day meeting, four major themes have been selected for discussion that have tipping point potential, partly but not entirely involving climate change and biodiversity. These themes are:

  • The mismatch between actual investment commitments in future fossil fuel infrastructure and the world’s leading governments’ recognition, in the Copenhagen Declaration, of the scientific view that the increase in global temperature ought not to exceed 2 degrees (Convened by Mr Ian Dunlop)

  • Polar deglaciation and its repercussions for global sea level (Convened by Drs Ian Allison and Tas van Ommen)

  • Interactive effects of the multiple environmental pressures on the Great Barrier Reef (Convened by Profs Terry Hughes and Brian Walker)

  • Long term global food security risks (Convened by Prof Will Steffen and Dr Roger Gifford)

Poster Presentation

There will be opportunity to present posters on Earth System Science results and issues.

The vision of the FY12 DMDRP is to extend and improve the function, quality of life, and lifespan for all individuals diagnosed with DMD. As such, the DMDRP is seeking to fund research to accelerate the development and clinical testing of new therapeutics and increase our understanding of successes and failures in clinical trials.

Individual award mechanisms within this program are as follows:

INVESTIGATOR-INITIATED RESEARCH AWARD
This award supports studies that will make an important contribution toward understanding mechanisms of initiation or progression, and/or improving patient care for DMD. Research projects should focus on translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in DMD into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s firsthand knowledge from providing care to patients.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $525,000 plus indirect costs. If requesting an Optional Qualified Collaborator, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $675,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 3 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Investigator-Initiated Research Award Guidelines

THERAPEUTIC IDEA AWARD
This award mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancement in DMD therapeutics. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. Presentation of preliminary data is not consistent with the intent of the Therapeutic Idea Award mechanism. While the inclusion of preliminary data is not prohibited, the strength of the application should not rely on preliminary data.

Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $300,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 2 years.

For more detailed information, please visit the Therapeutic Idea Award Guidelines

The Department of the Army (USAMRAA) seeks novel biomedical solutions to preserve the high level of performance and save the lives of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in field environments. Any projects proposed must be unique to the requirements of SOF who typically conduct combat operations in austere, remote locations without timely access to medical evacuation or elevated levels of medical care. It is these far-forward and/or isolated operations that make SOF medicine unique and result in material solutions characterised by ruggedness, light weight, small volume, and low power requirements.

The Department is also interested in research that will lead to improved techniques and procedures that do not necessarily require new material.

Funding & Duration

There are limitations on the duration and cost of research projects that the Department will fund. Proposed projects longer than two years will not be considered. Projects with a total cost exceeding US $700,000 will not be considered.

Eligibility

All individuals, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, who are employed by, or affiliated with an eligible organisation, are eligible.

The LCRP Concept Award mechanism supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to lung cancer. The Concept Award is not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project but, instead, allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations.

This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Applications must describe how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge of lung cancer or create an entirely new avenue for investigation.

Funding & Duration

The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $100,000 plus indirect costs. The maximum period of performance is 1 year.

Please refer to the Concept Award Guidelines for more details regarding eligibility and selection criteria.

R21 - Projects Exploratory/Developmental Grants
To encourage the development of new research activities in categorical program areas.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify specific biological or biobehavioral pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. This research will require transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioral intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied. Understanding the pathways through which these interventions are effective would identify the optimal type and intensity of intervention and determine who is most likely to benefit from these interventions by cancer type, age, or other host factors.

Funding & Duration
The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed US $275,000. No more than US $200,000 may be requested in any single year. The maximum project period is 2 years.

Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.

Research applications must test the effects of physical activity or weight control or both interventions on biomarkers of cancer prognosis among cancer survivors identified by previous animal or observational research, which may include but are not limited to intervention-induced changes in sex hormones, insulin or insulin-like growth factors or their binding proteins, insulin resistance, glucose metabolism, leptin and other adipokines, immunologic or inflammatory factors, oxidative stress and DNA damage or repair capacity, angiogenesis, or prostaglandins.

The Australia-India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) is a platform for bilateral collaboration in science, jointly managed and funded by the governments of Australia and India.

The Grand Challenge Fund is designed to support collaborative projects that address a problem considered by both countries to be significant enough to be characterised as a ‘grand challenge’. The problem would typically affect a large or particularly vulnerable population, an important industry and/or essential services.

The resolution of the problem would clearly lead to tangible benefits which may include: improvements in the quality of life of the affected population; the viability of the industry or the provision of an essential service.

Eligibility
To be eligible for funding under the Grand Challenge Fund the consortium must:

  • include at least one Australian and one Indian ‘eligible organisation’
  • seek support for a collaborative research project in one of the priority themes.

Indian consortium members must also lodge one hard copy of the Expression of Interest.

Please refer to the Grand Challenge Fund Guidelines for more information.

Funding & Duration

R01 - Research Project Grant
To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his specific interest and competencies.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)is to accelerate the discovery of causal genes and variants that influence the risk for disease; and conduct follow-up studies of particular genetic variants to gain novel insights into the functions of these variants and the mechanisms by which they may contribute to disease. Genomic regions of interest are primarily those identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) although other types of evidence may also inform the rationale for a given study.

These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.

Funding & Duration
An application may request direct costs of up to $350,000 per year. Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The project duration may be up to four years.

Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.

These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.

The Open Society Fellowship supports individuals seeking innovative and unconventional approaches to fundamental open society challenges. The fellowship funds work that will enrich public understanding of those challenges and stimulate far-reaching and probing conversations within the Open Society Foundations, and in the world.

A fellowship project might identify a problem that has not previously been recognised, develop new policy ideas to address familiar problems, or offer a new advocacy strategy.

Fellows should take advantage of the considerable intellectual and logistical resources of the Open Society Foundations and expect to contribute meaningfully to the Foundations' thinking in return.

Funding

Full-time fellows based in the United States will receive a stipend of US $80,000 or US $100,000, depending on work experience, seniority, and current income. Stipends will be prorated for part-time fellows.

For fellows based elsewhere, appropriate adjustments will be made to reflect the cost of living in those countries. The stipend does not necessarily equal the applicant's current salary. In certain cases, fellows will receive additional financial support to enable them to meet the residency expectation.

In addition to the stipend, fellows will receive a project budget. That budget may include expenses such as travel (including airfare and hotel), visa costs, part-time research assistance, conference fees and health insurance.

Eligibility
The fellowship considers applicants from all parts of the world. Project themes should cut across at least two areas of interest to the Open Society Foundations. Among these are human rights, government transparency, access to information and to justice, and the promotion of civil society and social inclusion.

Please refer to the Fellowship Guidelines for more details.

Placement & Duration
Most fellows spend a portion of their term in one or more Open Society Foundation offices. Fellows may work out of multiple offices during their term.

Fellows who wish to work on their project in a country in which they do not have citizenship must satisfy and comply with applicable visa requirements. The fellowship program will help fellows obtain necessary visas and covers all associated costs.

Though most fellowship terms are for one year, the program will consider requests for shorter or longer durations. Slight preference is given to applications for full-time fellowships, but the program will consider applicants who can only work part-time on their projects.
