BREAKFAST SEMINAR
7.45am (breakfast served)
Thursday, 2 August 2012
Ayers House
288 North Terrace. Adelaide, SA
Bright Ideas Over Breakfast is a series of breakfast seminars organised by eResearch SA, inviting leaders, who are involved in eResearch, to talk about their vision: both for their field of research and for their own work, and the role technology and eResearch plays in achieving that vision.
Presenters
At this special breakfast Dr Nick Tate will talk about the impact the RDSI Project will have on your research, now and in the future, as projects such as RDSI challenge common perceptions about research data as a research outcome in itself and its access and reuse.
Both Dr Tate and Mary Hobson, Director of eResearch SA will touch on eResearch SA’s successful NoDE bid, and the ReDS program, and their implications for research data storage in South Australia.
This event provides an excellent networking opportunity for a group of people with a common interest, but who are from a diverse range of disciplines, and for anyone dealing with or managing research data.
To register for this event, please visit: http://realisingrdsi.eventbrite.com.au/

North Terrace, Adelaide
Presentations will be followed by drinks & networking.
Adelaide Research & Innovation will host a free information session at the Art Gallery of South Australia for those interested in learning more about the benefits of research collaboration with government and industry partners.
Background
The landscape of academic research funding is changing. Diminishing government funding and increased competition has left researchers from across all disciplines looking for alternative sources to resource projects. Collaboration with government and industry is one option to consider, with benefits to be had beyond money. Working with government and industry partners can provide a great opportunity to facilitate the translation of research into impact in the community, as well as offer a stimulating source of new ideas and information to feed into research.
Guest Speakers
In this session, researchers from the University of Adelaide will talk about their experiences undertaking such collaborations.
Speakers include:
- Associate Professor Rachel Ankeny, School of History and Politics
- Associate Professor Simon Koblar, Stroke Research Program
- Dr Bruce Northcote, Director, Defence Communications & Information Networking Centre
- Professor David Adelson, Head of School, Molecular & Biomedical Sciences

The Department of the Army (USAMRAA) seeks novel biomedical solutions to preserve the high level of performance and save the lives of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in field environments. Any projects proposed must be unique to the requirements of SOF who typically conduct combat operations in austere, remote locations without timely access to medical evacuation or elevated levels of medical care. It is these far-forward and/or isolated operations that make SOF medicine unique and result in material solutions characterised by ruggedness, light weight, small volume, and low power requirements.
The Department is also interested in research that will lead to improved techniques and procedures that do not necessarily require new material.
Funding & Duration
There are limitations on the duration and cost of research projects that the Department will fund. Proposed projects longer than two years will not be considered. Projects with a total cost exceeding US $700,000 will not be considered.
Eligibility
All individuals, regardless of ethnicity, nationality, or citizenship status, who are employed by, or affiliated with an eligible organisation, are eligible.

R21 - Projects Exploratory/Developmental Grants
To encourage the development of new research activities in categorical program areas.
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify specific biological or biobehavioral pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. This research will require transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioral intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied. Understanding the pathways through which these interventions are effective would identify the optimal type and intensity of intervention and determine who is most likely to benefit from these interventions by cancer type, age, or other host factors.
Funding & Duration
The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed US $275,000. No more than US $200,000 may be requested in any single year. The maximum project period is 2 years.
Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.
Research applications must test the effects of physical activity or weight control or both interventions on biomarkers of cancer prognosis among cancer survivors identified by previous animal or observational research, which may include but are not limited to intervention-induced changes in sex hormones, insulin or insulin-like growth factors or their binding proteins, insulin resistance, glucose metabolism, leptin and other adipokines, immunologic or inflammatory factors, oxidative stress and DNA damage or repair capacity, angiogenesis, or prostaglandins.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)is to accelerate the discovery of causal genes and variants that influence the risk for disease; and conduct follow-up studies of particular genetic variants to gain novel insights into the functions of these variants and the mechanisms by which they may contribute to disease. Genomic regions of interest are primarily those identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) although other types of evidence may also inform the rationale for a given study.
These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.
Funding & Duration
An application may request direct costs of up to $350,000 per year. Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The project duration may be up to four years.
Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.
Submission
Letters of Intent (LOI's) are to be submitted directly to the Sponsor by the external due date *
