About the ARC Future Fellowships
The Australian Research Council's 'Future Fellowships' are significant Category 1 fellowships offered to outstanding Australian and international researchers, over four years, currently awarded at up to AUD $182,792 (inclusive of on costs) per annum. The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to promote research in areas of critical national importance.
In addition the amount awarded individual Fellows, the ARC will provide Administering Organisations with funding of up to AUD $50,000 per annum, which may be used for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the Future Fellow’s research.
Eligibility and Success Factors
The University was very successful in the last round of Fellowships, with a 43% success rate. Applicants need to have excellent research track records relative to opportunity. Based on the Funding Rules for the last round, dates for the award of PhD (or having achieved equivalent status) to be eligible for a Future Fellowship at the next application opportunity (i.e. for Fellowship funding beginning in 2013) are likely to be on or between 30 November 1997 and 30 November 2007.
Over the past 3 rounds there has been significant growth in national success rate of proposals overall from 20.5% in 2009, to 30.7% in 2011. This was mirrored by growth in the success rate of proposals from resident Australians. The most striking result however is the 41.9% success rate of proposals from “returning Australians” in 2011, while in comparison the success rate of proposals of foreign nationals was only 15.7% in the same year.
These figures support the idea that the Future Fellowships program can provide excellent opportunity for retaining Australian researchers, or recruiting Australian researchers to the University, particularly those currently located overseas.
Submission
The Future Fellowships program is coming to a close. There are no more application rounds scheduled beyond the next round for funding to commence in 2013, so now is a good time to start thinking about how to take advantage of this last and significant research funding opportunity before it vanishes.
Funding Rules for the final round may likely be released in September 2012 with applications predicted to close around October / November this year. Until the release of these Funding Rules the Rules for the current round might provide useful background: http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/futurefel/ft_fundingrules.htm
Intending applicants need to submit a Notification of Intent (NoI) form via email to arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au by Friday 10 August.
This form, along with other submission details, is also available on the Research Branch’s ARC website: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/
If you have any queries about Future Fellowships, please email arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au

R21 - Projects Exploratory/Developmental Grants
To encourage the development of new research activities in categorical program areas.
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify specific biological or biobehavioural pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. This research will require transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioural intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied. Understanding the pathways through which these interventions are effective would identify the optimal type and intensity of intervention and determine who is most likely to benefit from these interventions by cancer type, age, or other host factors.
Funding & Duration
The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed US $275,000. No more than US $200,000 may be requested in any single year. The maximum project period is 2 years.
Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.
Research applications must test the effects of physical activity or weight control or both interventions on biomarkers of cancer prognosis among cancer survivors identified by previous animal or observational research, which may include but are not limited to intervention-induced changes in sex hormones, insulin or insulin-like growth factors or their binding proteins, insulin resistance, glucose metabolism, leptin and other adipokines, immunologic or inflammatory factors, oxidative stress and DNA damage or repair capacity, angiogenesis, or prostaglandins.

R01 - Research Project Grant
To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his specific interest and competencies.
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)is to accelerate the discovery of causal genes and variants that influence the risk for disease; and conduct follow-up studies of particular genetic variants to gain novel insights into the functions of these variants and the mechanisms by which they may contribute to disease. Genomic regions of interest are primarily those identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) although other types of evidence may also inform the rationale for a given study.
These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.
Funding & Duration
An application may request direct costs of up to $350,000 per year. Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The project duration may be up to four years.
Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) supports innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems, with emphasis placed on novel approaches involving scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries.
The HFSP is currently offering two fellowship schemes:
Long-Term Fellowships (LTF)
The Long-Term Fellowships are aimed at applicants with a Ph.D. in a biological discipline to embark on a new project in a different field of the life sciences. Preference is given to applicants who propose an original study in biology that marks a departure from their previous Ph.D. or postdoctoral work.
Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF)
Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships (CDF) are aimed at applicants with a Ph.D. from outside the life sciences (e.g. in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering or computer sciences), who have had limited exposure to biology during their previous training. Applicants for the CDF should propose a significant departure from their past research, for example, changing from material science or physics to cell biology, from chemistry to molecular biology, or from computer science to neuroscience, among many other possibilities.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund promotes quality evidence-based practice in drug law enforcement to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of licit and illicit drug use in Australian society. A key aim of NDLERF is to promote collaboration between the Law Enforcement Sector and Researchers. The Fund functions within the broader context provided by the National Drug Strategic Framework.
The NDLERF Board of Management invites applications from researchers for projects which:
- advance an understanding of the operation of licit and illicit substance markets, including interactions between the markets surrounding various substances
- describe the specific nature, extent and impact of substance abuse on the community and policing
- consider the effect of interventions and strategies put in place to counteract the impact of substance misuse
- assist in the development of innovative technologies and/or tools, techniques or methods which will enhance the sector's response to drug law enforcement
Funding & Duration
Due to the fast-moving environment of drug law enforcement, The NDLERF Board of Management will increasingly seek to fund shorter, rather than longer projects. That said, the Board also recognises some research topics may not lend themselves to projects of shorter duration, and may have longer term strategic benefit to law enforcement. Researchers are encouraged to apply for funding for such projects. In doing so, however, applicants must strongly justify the need for lengthy projects and demonstrate the longer-term practical operational or strategic value to the law enforcement sector of the proposed project.
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
Submission
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the NDLERF Secretariat prior to submission of applications to the NDLERF Board of Management.
Please submit a hardcopy of finalised proposals to the Research Branch, accompanied by a signed and completed hardcopy of the University's Grant Application Coversheet.
Hardcopies of applications may be sent to:
Research Branch - Level 7, 115 Grenfell Street, Adelaide SA 5000

The Academy provides funding of up to $10,000 as well as the use the Shine Dome free of charge as a venue to host conferences, the themes of which must align themselves with the following available schemes:
Boden Research Conferences (Biological Sciences)
With the support of the late Dr Alex Boden, FAA, the Academy has established a series of small specialist conferences in the biological sciences to enable active research workers in rapidly advancing fields to discuss current advances and problems.
Please note: under this scheme, conferences that are one of a continuing series are less likely to gain support unless they specifically address a newly emerging theme or topic within the broader area of the series.
Elizabeth and Frederick White Research Conferences (Physical Sciences)
With the support of the late Lady White, MBBS and the late Sir Frederick White, FAA, FRS, the Academy has established a series of research conferences in the physical and mathematical sciences related to the solid Earth, the terrestrial oceans, the Earth's atmosphere, solar-terrestrial science, space sciences and astronomy.
The purpose of the conferences is to advance at the most fundamental level of the understanding of the subject, to introduce to Australian research new aspects or directions, and to encourage participation of overseas scientists.
Please note: organisers are asked to make an undertaking on acceptance of an offer of funding from the Academy to call their conference an Elizabeth and Frederick White Conference and to advertise it as such.
Fenner Conferences on the Environment
With the support of Professor Frank Fenner, FAA, FRS, and the late Mrs Fenner, the Academy has established a series of environmental conferences on the environment and conservation issues in Australia and its environs.
The purpose of these conferences is to bring together those with relevant scientific, administrative and policy expertise to consider current environmental and conservation problems in Australia, thereby contributing to the formation of policies that can alleviate some of these problems.
The organisers of all approved conferences are responsible for the organisation of the conference, and the sponsoring scientific society(ies) are responsible for the funding allocated to the conference.
