About the ARC Future Fellowships
The Australian Research Council's 'Future Fellowships' are significant Category 1 fellowships offered to outstanding Australian and international researchers, over four years, currently awarded at up to AUD $182,792 (inclusive of on costs) per annum. The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to promote research in areas of critical national importance.

In addition the amount awarded individual Fellows, the ARC will provide Administering Organisations with funding of up to AUD $50,000 per annum, which may be used for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the Future Fellow’s research.

Eligibility and Success Factors
The University was very successful in the last round of Fellowships, with a 43% success rate. Applicants need to have excellent research track records relative to opportunity. Based on the Funding Rules for the last round, dates for the award of PhD (or having achieved equivalent status) to be eligible for a Future Fellowship at the next application opportunity (i.e. for Fellowship funding beginning in 2013) are likely to be on or between 30 November 1997 and 30 November 2007.

Over the past 3 rounds there has been significant growth in national success rate of proposals overall from 20.5% in 2009, to 30.7% in 2011. This was mirrored by growth in the success rate of proposals from resident Australians. The most striking result however is the 41.9% success rate of proposals from “returning Australians” in 2011, while in comparison the success rate of proposals of foreign nationals was only 15.7% in the same year.

These figures support the idea that the Future Fellowships program can provide excellent opportunity for retaining Australian researchers, or recruiting Australian researchers to the University, particularly those currently located overseas.

 

Submission
The Future Fellowships program is coming to a close. There are no more application rounds scheduled beyond the next round for funding to commence in 2013, so now is a good time to start thinking about how to take advantage of this last and significant research funding opportunity before it vanishes.

Funding Rules for the final round may likely be released in September 2012 with applications predicted to close around October / November this year. The Translational Research Grant is designed to further develop ancer research capacity and competitiveness in translational research. The overall aim of the NBCF Translational Research Grant scheme is to support research that either:

• Aims to translate breast cancer research across the spectrum into the development of new methods for prevention, early-detection screening, diagnosis and therapy (including supportive care) through trialling in the clinical or applied setting; OR
• Translates results from clinical studies into clinical practice and/or health policy and/or health decision making processes.

 

Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
The maximum funding available for each Translational Research Grant is up to $250,000 per annum for up to five years.

The funding also supports the costs of the proposed research and may include items, such as cost of facilities and services, storage of biospecimen samples, patient/population research recruitment, treatment costs, development of resources, data collection and third-party contractual services for peri-clinical activity. Overhead costs and purchase of major equipment items cannot be supported via this scheme.

Eligibility
The proposed Project must be located/managed/operated under the auspices of a University, hospital or major research institution(s) located within Australia.

The Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC) is inviting collaborative multi-disciplinary proposals by way of Preliminary Project Applications (PPA) as part of a two-stage process to address the two high-priority areas of:

• Grapevine germplasm
• Yeast and bacterial germplasm.

Grapevine germplasm: Planting material is the foundation of the wine sector. Planting decisions require high-quality germplasm that is resilient to future climate challenges while being able to deliver desired wine quality and styles. Research will focus on developing, evaluating and identifying rootstocks, varieties and clones that produce desirable wine styles, while possessing a number of other essential properties such as tolerance to drought, heat, salt, soil-borne pests and diseases.

Yeast and bacterial germplasm: Fit-for-purpose yeast and bacterial germplasm are key ingredients in the efficient production of superior wine at a range of price points. Research will focus on developing and evaluating new and enhanced fit-for purpose yeast and bacterial germplasm.

These are two of the priority research areas identified in the GWRDC’s Strategic Research, Development and Extension Plan 2012–17.

The object of the Sir Mark Mitchell Foundation is to assist in the promotion of research in Natural History, centered in the State of South Australia. The ARC Linkage Projects aim to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external Partner Organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide research training opportunities for researchers.

Funding & Duration
The ARC will award a minimum of $50,000 per year to a maximum of $300,000 per year. Specific cash and/or in-kind co-contributions are required from Partner Organisations.

The IBRO Asia Pacific Exchange Fellowship aims to allow high-quality junior scientists at the level of postdoctoral fellow or junior faculty from diverse geographic and scientific areas to broaden the scope of their training in neuroscience by working four to six months abroad in established laboratories.

Funding & Duration
Funding of up to US $8,500 is available in principle to cover each 4-6 month fellowship. The award may vary depending on the country in which the successful candidate studies. The grant is used along with matching funds from the host laboratory to defray the cost of travel and to subsidize living costs.

Eligibility
Applicants must be postdoctoral fellow or junior faculty members (under the age of 45). Senior PhD students with a good publication record and strong justification for the exchange program will also be considered. Both the applicant and the host laboratory must be within the Asia Pacific Region.

The MND Association supports biomedical research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and related conditions, in all relevant disciplines, and is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that funds and promotes global research into Motor Neurone Disease.

The purpose of the Biomedical Project Grants is to support a single project: a piece of work designed to answer a single question or a small group of related questions.

Funding & Duration
Applications for project grants should not exceed £85,000 per annum (and £255,000 in total) without the prior agreement of the MND Association.

Applications of up to three years will be considered. Applications for less than two years must include a named researcher with the relevant expertise, familiar with the laboratory. The continuation of a grant within this period will be subject to annual review after the submission of a progress report, which is required at the completion of each year of the project.

Eligibility
Applications submitted by researchers based at institutions outside of the UK and Ireland must meet the following criteria: the project must be unique in concept or design, and the project must involve a significant aspect of collaboration with a UK institute.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)is to accelerate the discovery of causal genes and variants that influence the risk for disease; and conduct follow-up studies of particular genetic variants to gain novel insights into the functions of these variants and the mechanisms by which they may contribute to disease. Genomic regions of interest are primarily those identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) although other types of evidence may also inform the rationale for a given study.

These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.

Funding & Duration
An application may request direct costs of up to $350,000 per year. Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The project duration may be up to four years.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) solicits basic and pre-clinical research applications that study the combined and interactive effects of substance abuse and HIV-1 infection on glial cell biology. Glial cells express a variety of neurotransmitter receptors, transporters, and other molecular entities that are targets of drugs of abuse. Additionally, viral and host responses to HIV-1 infection usurp and alter glial cell function.

The goal of this FOA is to encourage research to determine the molecular and cellular consequences of substance abuse, HIV-1 infection, and their interactions on glial cells within the central nervous system (CNS).

Funding & Duration
Application budgets are not to exceed US $500,000 in direct costs per year, but should reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The module budget format should be used for direct costs requests up to US $250,000 per year. The maximum project period is 5 years.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications to study human and non-human stem cells involved in alcohol-induced tissue injuries. Alcohol abuse is known to cause pathology in a number of organ systems. Disorders most commonly associated with chronic alcohol consumption include alcoholic liver disease (ALD), pancreatitis, cardiovascular disease, neural damage, endocrine dysfunction, osteoporosis, cancer, and immune dysfunction. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify specific biological or biobehavioural pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. This research will require transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioural intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied. Understanding the pathways through which these interventions are effective would identify the optimal type and intensity of intervention and determine who is most likely to benefit from these interventions by cancer type, age, or other host factors.

Visiting Fellowships are intended primarily for professional philosophers and social or political theorists on study leave from their own institutions. Fellows must engage in an area of philosophy relevant to the work of the Centre, but this requirement is broadly interpreted.

Fellowships are for a 12 week period, during which Fellows are expected to take part in Centre activities that take place during their tenure of the fellowship; Fellows also participate in and contribute to research seminars in the Department of Moral Philosophy.

GRDC Travel Awards are available to individuals or groups within the Australian grains industry wishing to attend a conference or undertake travel that aligns with the GRDC’s corporate objectives and demonstrates benefit to the Australian grains industry.

Eligibility
To be eligible for a GRDC Travel Award, the applicant must not be eligible for an Grains Industry Development Awards and must not be associated to a current GRDC project.

Betty Trask left a bequest to the Society of Authors in 1983 to fund a prize for first novels written by authors under the age of 35 in a romantic or traditional, but not experimental, style.

Prize
The prize money, which totals £20,000, must be used for foreign travel. The prize is open to published and unpublished novels.

Authors must be under the age of 35, and have authored a work in the romantic or traditional style.

The RIRDC Rural Women's Award is open to all women involved in primary industries and resource development. The Award's main objective is to support women with demonstrated leadership capacities, who have the desire and commitment to make a greater contribution to their industries and communities.

Prize
The $10,000 Bursary is the major prize for each State and Territory winner to provide resources to develop your vision into a project or initiative that will support your professional development and will benefit primary industries and rural Australia.

• Based examples of previous prize-winners, bursaries may be used to:
• Build your leadership, business and management skills
• Undertake an overseas study tour to grow your knowledge of innovations and markets
• Attend conferences to grow your knowledge and networks with industry
• Run workshops or a speaking tour in an area where you see a need and have expertise

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants about 20 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awards annually, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, to internationally renowned academics from abroad in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in research to date and their exceptional promise for the future.

Prize
The award amount totals EUR 45,000. In Germany, research awards are generally exempt from income tax under German tax law. In addition, further expenditures (such as travel or language courses) are covered in the context of the invitation to stay in Germany for research purposes.

Eligibility
Academics from abroad, regardless of their discipline or nationality, may be nominated for a Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award, provided that they have received their doctoral degree within the past 18 years. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation particularly encourages the nomination of qualified female academics.

Self-nomination is not possible. The nominee’s outstanding academic qualification must be internationally recognised and documented by corresponding successes in research, such as positively received academic publications or previous awards.

In collaboration with five venture capital partners, General Electric (GE) has pledged up to $10 million to find, fund , and bring to market breakthrough ideas for reducing our carbon footprint from Australia & New Zealand.

Prize
GE will support winning Ecomagination Challenge entrants through:

• Investment - capital of up to $10 million from GE to be invested into promising start-ups and ideas
• Validation - evaluation of entrant’s business strategy through in-depth discussions with GE‘s technical and commercial teams
• Distribution - exploration of partnership opportunities with GE to scale a business and create global reach

The ESRC's Future Leaders Scheme is open to high-quality candidates from anywhere in the world who have a maximum of four years’ postdoctoral experience and the support of an eligible UK research organisation.

The proposed host research organisation will be required to demonstrate a high level of commitment to the applicant’s career development.

The scheme aims to:

• Enable outstanding early-career social scientists, in partnership with their host organisation, to acquire the skills set to become the future world leaders in their field
• Fund excellent social science research projects

Funding & Duration
Future Research Leader grants will provide up to three years' funding with an overall limit of £312,500. The ESRC will fund up to 60 percent of the Future Research Leader grant holder’s time. The host research organisation must support the remainder of the grant holder’s normal salary throughout the period of the grant.

This call is open to candidates from anywhere in the world, however, all potential applicants must have the strong support of an eligible research organisation in the UK to host them if they are successful.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications to study human and non-human stem cells involved in alcohol-induced tissue injuries. Alcohol abuse is known to cause pathology in a number of organ systems. Disorders most commonly associated with chronic alcohol consumption include alcoholic liver disease (ALD), pancreatitis, cardiovascular disease, neural damage, endocrine dysfunction, osteoporosis, cancer, and immune dysfunction. The objective of this FOA is to understand the role of stem cells in alcohol-induced tissue damage and recovery, particularly how they are influenced by alcohol metabolism and their role in alcohol-related cancers.

To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his specific interest and competencies.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for integrated, innovative research on the novel and unconventional contributions of ethanol metabolizing pathways, their metabolites, cofactors, and interactions with synergizing biological pathways in the development of alcohol- induced diseases and end organ injuries.

It is anticipated that this FOA will generate data that may lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of identifying key cellular and molecular components in the initiation, progression and maintenance of the diverse medical disorders caused by excessive, long term alcohol consumption. In the future this knowledge may be critical in the diagnosis, treatment and management of vulnerable patient population debilitated by the vast array of alcohol-induced pathologies and enable clinicians to improve disease outcomes and, consequently, public health.

AARE makes this award to encourage and support educational research by Indigenous Australian researchers. The winner of the award will be announced at the Annual Conference. Winners also receive a complimentary conference registration, to be used within the following 2 years.

Eligibility
An applicant must:

• be a member of AARE
• identify as Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
• submit a first-authored conference paper proposal by the closing date for conference paper proposals and have it accepted for presentation
• submit a full copy of this first-authored paper to aare@aare.edu.au
• be able to attend the full conference
• deliver the paper at the conference as scheduled
• have not previously received a Betty Watts Indigenous Researcher award

The conference paper may be based on a paper that has been published elsewhere since the start of the prior calendar year.
