About the ARC Future Fellowships
The Australian Research Council's 'Future Fellowships' are significant Category 1 fellowships offered to outstanding Australian and international researchers, over four years, currently awarded at up to AUD $182,792 (inclusive of on costs) per annum. The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to promote research in areas of critical national importance.

In addition the amount awarded individual Fellows, the ARC will provide Administering Organisations with funding of up to AUD $50,000 per annum, which may be used for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the Future Fellow’s research.


Eligibility and Success Factors
The University was very successful in the last round of Fellowships, with a 43% success rate. Applicants need to have excellent research track records relative to opportunity. Based on the Funding Rules for the last round, dates for the award of PhD (or having achieved equivalent status) to be eligible for a Future Fellowship at the next application opportunity (i.e. for Fellowship funding beginning in 2013) are likely to be on or between 30 November 1997 and 30 November 2007.

Over the past 3 rounds there has been significant growth in national success rate of proposals overall from 20.5% in 2009, to 30.7% in 2011. This was mirrored by growth in the success rate of proposals from resident Australians. The most striking result however is the 41.9% success rate of proposals from “returning Australians” in 2011, while in comparison the success rate of proposals of foreign nationals was only 15.7% in the same year.

These figures support the idea that the Future Fellowships program can provide excellent opportunity for retaining Australian researchers, or recruiting Australian researchers to the University, particularly those currently located overseas.

 

Submission
The Future Fellowships program is coming to a close. There are no more application rounds scheduled beyond the next round for funding to commence in 2013, so now is a good time to start thinking about how to take advantage of this last and significant research funding opportunity before it vanishes.

Funding Rules for the final round may likely be released in September 2012 with applications predicted to close around October / November this year. The Tizard machine is six times faster than its predecessor, and capable of 34 trillion calculations per second. It will enable new research opportunities for scientists studying fields such as climate change, cancer genomics, and high-energy physics.

The Tizard machine is a unique and powerful mix of different computing systems, all optimised to complete specific tasks faster than ever before, making it the most powerful high-performance computing research facility in South Australia.

This event will give you the opportunity to see the Tizard machine in action with our featured visual demonstrations and interactive displays.

The high-performance computer is named in honour of James Tizard, founding CEO of SABRENet (2007-2011) and Director of eResearch SA (2009-2010) who passed away in 2011. This occasion will provide an opportunity to recognise the important contribution James made to the development of ICT capacity in South Australia.

The Translational Research Grant is designed to further develop ancer research capacity and competitiveness in translational research. The overall aim of the NBCF Translational Research Grant scheme is to support research that either:

  • Aims to translate breast cancer research across the spectrum into the development of new methods for prevention, early-detection screening, diagnosis and therapy (including supportive care) through trialling in the clinical or applied setting; OR
  • Translates results from clinical studies into clinical practice and/or health policy and/or health decision making processes.

 

Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
The maximum funding available for each Translational Research Grant is up to $250,000 per annum for up to five years.

The funding also supports the costs of the proposed research and may include items, such as cost of facilities and services, storage of biospecimen samples, patient/population research recruitment, treatment costs, development of resources, data collection and third-party contractual services for peri-clinical activity. Overhead costs and purchase of major equipment items cannot be supported via this scheme.


Eligibility
The proposed Project must be located/managed/operated under the auspices of a University, hospital or major research institution(s) located within Australia.

The NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health Projects (Partnership Projects) provide funding and support to create new opportunities for researchers and policy makers to work together, in order to define research questions, and undertake research and also to interpret and implement the findings relevant to the delivery, organisation, funding and access to health services.  These research topics are investigator initiated.


The application deadline for the third call for NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health – Partnership Projects 2012 is 29 January 2013.
NHMRC has changed the arrangements for this scheme to allow applicants to apply at any time during the year rather than through just one annual round.

This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
Projects may be of any duration up to five (5) years and the maximum amount of NHMRC funding that may be requested for a single application is $1.5 million.

The Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC) is inviting collaborative multi-disciplinary proposals by way of Preliminary Project Applications (PPA) as part of a two-stage process to address the two high-priority areas of:

  • Grapevine germplasm
  • Yeast and bacterial germplasm.

Grapevine germplasm: Planting material is the foundation of the wine sector. Planting decisions require high-quality germplasm that is resilient to future climate challenges while being able to deliver desired wine quality and styles. Research will focus on developing, evaluating and identifying rootstocks, varieties and clones that produce desirable wine styles, while possessing a number of other essential properties such as tolerance to drought, heat, salt, soil-borne pests and diseases.

Yeast and bacterial germplasm: Fit-for-purpose yeast and bacterial germplasm are key ingredients in the efficient production of superior wine at a range of price points. Research will focus on developing and evaluating new and enhanced fit-for purpose yeast and bacterial germplasm.

These are two of the priority research areas identified in the GWRDC’s Strategic Research, Development and Extension Plan 2012–17.

Lake Eyre is one of the driest places on one of the driest continents and yet it is probably most famous for its floods. Researchers have an unrivalled chance to discover some of the mysteries of how plants and animals cope with the irregular patterns of the inland.

Proposals are requested for projects directed towards gaining vital information to protect the unique wildlife in the region of the Lake Eyre Basin and to learn how to better manage the inland environments.

The ARC Linkage Projects aim to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external Partner Organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide research training opportunities for researchers.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announces the second round of its Reinvent the Toilet Challenge designed to prototype a means of dealing effectively and cost-efficiently with human waste for the 2 billion people on earth who currently lack access to safe and affordable sanitation.

This Challenge intends to fund the concept development, design, and prototyping of a waterless, hygienic toilet that costs less than $0.05 per user per day.


Funding
Eight grants will be awarded to universities, amounting to a total of US $3 million.

The TB Vaccine Accelerator Program is a new scheme within the Foundation's Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative. It focuses on key areas where additional investments may be able to fill critical knowledge gaps and generate much-needed tools for enabling and accelerating TB vaccine development.

The two main goals of the TB Vaccine Accelerator Program are:

  1. To develop novel approaches to vaccination against Mtb, with a particular focus on approaches that aim to induce protection against infection with Mtb

  2. To develop models of natural Mtb transmission and/or methods for defining molecular and biological characteristics of naturally transmitted mycobacteria and the interactions of such with vertebrate hosts


Funding & Duration
Up to US $20 million will be available over the next three years ($5 to 8 million per year). The sum cost of all projects ultimately selected, may not exceed this amount.

The MND Association supports biomedical research on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and related conditions, in all relevant disciplines, and is the only national charity in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that funds and promotes global research into Motor Neurone Disease.

The purpose of the Biomedical Project Grants is to support a single project: a piece of work designed to answer a single question or a small group of related questions.


Funding & Duration
Applications for project grants should not exceed £85,000 per annum (and £255,000 in total) without the prior agreement of the MND Association.

Applications of up to three years will be considered. Applications for less than two years must include a named researcher with the relevant expertise, familiar with the laboratory. The continuation of a grant within this period will be subject to annual review after the submission of a progress report, which is required at the completion of each year of the project.


Eligibility
Applications submitted by researchers based at institutions outside of the UK and Ireland must meet the following criteria: the project must be unique in concept or design, and the project must involve a significant aspect of collaboration with a UK institute.

To provide research support specifically limited in time and amount for studies in categorical program areas. Small grants provide flexibility for initiating studies which are generally for preliminary short-term projects and are non-renewable.


This FOA invites applications proposing to 1) investigate the role of specific bioenergetic factors in increased fatigability, reduced activity, and diminished sense of well-being in older persons; 2) test the effects of interventions targeted at such factors on performance capabilities, functional status, and other outcomes that relate to quality of life; or 3) develop and evaluate measures of fatigability applicable for observational and/or interventional studies.  


Funding & Duration
The combined budget for direct costs for the two year project period may not exceed US $100,000. No more than US$50,000 in direct costs may be requested in any single year. The total project period may not exceed two years.


Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Institutions) are eligible to apply.

This FOA invites applications proposing to 1) investigate the role of specific bioenergetic factors in increased fatigability, reduced activity, and diminished sense of well-being in older persons; 2) test the effects of interventions targeted at such factors on performance capabilities, functional status, and other outcomes that relate to quality of life; or 3) develop and evaluate measures of fatigability applicable for observational and/or interventional studies.

The combined budget for direct costs for the two year project period may not exceed US $275,000. No more than US $200,000 may be requested in any single year. Applicants may request direct costs in US $25,000 modules, up to the total direct costs limitation of US $275,000 for the combined two-year award period.

This research will require transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioural intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied. Understanding the pathways through which these interventions are effective would identify the optimal type and intensity of intervention and determine who is most likely to benefit from these interventions by cancer type, age, or other host factors.

This reissued funding opportunity announcement (FOA) calls for collaborative applications between institutions in the United States, or other developed countries, and research institutions in developing countries affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The goal of this FOA is to strengthen the research infrastructure of local institutions in developing countries and  provide support for a small portfolio of high impact social and/or behavioural science research on HIV/AIDS.

Funding & Duration
New Investigator Awards provide a flexible package of funding that is driven by the requirements of the proposed research. A New Investigator Award might be anything up to £425k per year and for any duration up to a maximum of seven years.

This Fellowship is tenable at the IARC in Lyon, France working in a research Group. The fellowship is for a period of two years, (the second year being subject to satisfactory appraisal) attracting a stipend of 33, 000 Euros. The cost of travel for the Fellow, and in certain circumstances for dependants, will be met, a dependant's allowance paid, and health insurance covered.


Eligibility
These Fellowships are intended for junior scientists who are Australian Nationals, and who are engaged in research within the medical (and allied) sciences, and wish to pursue a career in cancer research. Eligibility
The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation invites universities, research institutes, scientists and engineers as well as other individual and organisations to submit nominations for the Volvo Environment Prize. Priority is given however, to an individual or to a group of named individuals, rather than to institutions.


Prize
The Volvo Environment Prize consists of a diploma, a glass sculpture and a cash award for SEK 1.5 million (approximately AUD $204,000)

The IBRO Asia Pacific Exchange Fellowship aims to allow high-quality junior scientists at the level of postdoctoral fellow or junior faculty from diverse geographic and scientific areas to broaden the scope of their training in neuroscience by working four to six months abroad in established laboratories.


Funding & Duration
Funding of up to US $8,500 is available in principle to cover each 4-6 month fellowship. The award may vary depending on the country in which the successful candidate studies. The grant is used along with matching funds from the host laboratory to defray the cost of travel and to subsidize living costs.


Eligibility
Applicants must be postdoctoral fellow or junior faculty members (under the age of 45). Senior PhD students with a good publication record and strong justification for the exchange program will also be considered. Both the applicant and the host laboratory must be within the Asia Pacific Region.

The ASSA Workshops Program is a competitive program bestowing grants to assist social sciences researchers to convene a two-day, multidisciplinary research workshop.

Workshop Format
The Workshop format is interactive, normally held over two days, and includes a dinner at which further exchange and discussion can continue informally. Interdisciplinarity is expected and the topics and participants should reflect this.

It is expected that participants will include:

  • established researchers and leaders in their areas of expertise
  • early career scholars who are challenging and/or adding to debate


Expected Outcomes

The Academy expects dissemination of the workshop outcomes, through at least one of the following:

  • Publication via a recognised publishing house
  • Chapter/s in a publication, monograph or journal
  • Published paper/s in professional journals
  • On a university, institution or Academy website
  • Media article (newspaper, radio or TV)


Eligibility
There must be at least two early career scholars who are Australia-based.

Funding & Timeframe
Workshops will be funded to a maximum of $7,500 for workshops to be conducted in the period 1 July 2012- 30 June 2013.

The OHF Research Grant program assists investigators, new or established, who have research projects for which they need support. While the OHF primarily seeks to fund grants which will increase the understanding of Primary Hyperoxaluria and oxalosis, and improve the clinical management and treatment of the genetic diseases, applications focused on hyperoxaluria and oxalosis associated with other conditions and diseases will also be considered.


Funding & Duration
The maximum amount awarded per grant is US $160,000 for up to two years. Indirect costs must be included in the maximum funding amount.


Eligibility

  • Applicants must hold a MD, PhD. or equivalent by the time of the start of the funding period and have an appointment at an academic institution

  • No US citizenship requirements are imposed by the OHF. Compliance with local and federal statutes and regulations of the country of origin must be met

  • Revised grant applications submitted to OHF require a 2-page introduction addressing the Reviewers' comments from the prior review of the grant application

Funding & Duration

Research Awards are designed to be in an amount approximately equivalent to the amount necessary to support 1 graduate student for 1 year. While costs differ by university and by region, the median award amount is around US $50,000 to $60,000. The maximum amount the primary investigator may request is US $150,000.

To encourage the development of new research activities in categorical program areas.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages transdisciplinary and translational research that will identify specific biological or biobehavioural pathways through which physical activity and/or weight control (either weight loss or avoidance of weight gain) may affect cancer prognosis and survival. This research will require transdisciplinary approaches that bring together behavioural intervention expertise, cancer biology, and other basic and clinical science disciplines relevant to the pathways being studied. Understanding the pathways through which these interventions are effective would identify the optimal type and intensity of intervention and determine who is most likely to benefit from these interventions by cancer type, age, or other host factors.

The combined budget for direct costs for the two-year project period may not exceed US $275,000. No more than US $200,000 may be requested in any single year. The maximum project period is 2 years.

Research applications must test the effects of physical activity or weight control or both interventions on biomarkers of cancer prognosis among cancer survivors identified by previous animal or observational research, which may include but are not limited to intervention-induced changes in sex hormones, insulin or insulin-like growth factors or their binding proteins, insulin resistance, glucose metabolism, leptin and other adipokines, immunologic or inflammatory factors, oxidative stress and DNA damage or repair capacity, angiogenesis, or prostaglandins.

These prestigious Fellowships are named after Dr John Cade AM (1912-1980), an Australian psychiatrist working in Melbourne after World War II, who discovered the effectiveness of lithium as a treatment for bipolar disorder.

Successful applicants will be established researchers with an exemplary international record of achievement, have expertise in innovative research and research translation and have a demonstrated ability to expand Australia’s capacity in mental health research


Funding & Duration
Up to two Fellowships of $750,000 per annum for five years will be awarded in this one-off scheme. The Fellowship package is provided to support or fund the Fellow’s salary and must also be used to support a team of researchers and/or the costs associated with the proposed research.

This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for integrated, innovative research on the novel and unconventional contributions of ethanol metabolizing pathways, their metabolites, cofactors, and interactions with synergizing biological pathways in the development of alcohol- induced diseases and end organ injuries.

It is anticipated that this FOA will generate data that may lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of identifying key cellular and molecular components in the initiation, progression and maintenance of the diverse medical disorders caused by excessive, long term alcohol consumption. In the future this knowledge may be critical in the diagnosis, treatment and management of vulnerable patient population debilitated by the vast array of alcohol-induced pathologies and enable clinicians to improve disease outcomes and, consequently, public health.

Funding
JDRF and MGF provide grants of up to $2,000 for domestic travel, and up to $4,000 for international travel to early stage scientists, and allied health and nursing professionals. The awards are designed to provide funding for travel to research institutions or scientific meetings, for the purpose of furthering the recipient’s expertise in type 1 diabetes research or management.

Two categories of Travel Grants are available:

Early Stage Scientist Travel Grants for medical and science graduates who are undertaking type 1 diabetes research, and researchers in the early stage of their career (PhD students or not more than 5 years post-doctoral).

Allied Health and Nursing Travel Grants for allied health or nurse professionals or students, enrolled in a post graduate research program, whose research will impact on the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their carers and families.

The RIRDC Rural Women's Award is open to all women involved in primary industries and resource development. The Award's main objective is to support women with demonstrated leadership capacities, who have the desire and commitment to make a greater contribution to their industries and communities.

Prize
The $10,000 Bursary is the major prize for each State and Territory winner to provide resources to develop your vision into a project or initiative that will support your professional development and will benefit primary industries and rural Australia.

  • Based examples of previous prize-winners, bursaries may be used to:

  • Undertake an overseas study tour to grow your knowledge of innovations and markets
