About the ARC Future Fellowships The Australian Research Council's 'Future Fellowships' are significant Category 1 fellowships offered to outstanding Australian and international researchers, over four years, currently awarded at up to AUD $182,792 (inclusive of on costs) per annum. The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to promote research in areas of critical national importance.
In addition the amount awarded individual Fellows, the ARC will provide Administering Organisations with funding of up to AUD $50,000 per annum, which may be used for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the Future Fellow’s research.
Eligibility and Success Factors The University was very successful in the last round of Fellowships, with a 43% success rate. Applicants need to have excellent research track records relative to opportunity. Based on the Funding Rules for the last round, dates for the award of PhD (or having achieved equivalent status) to be eligible for a Future Fellowship at the next application opportunity (i.e. for Fellowship funding beginning in 2013) are likely to be on or between 30 November 1997 and 30 November 2007.
Over the past 3 rounds there has been significant growth in national success rate of proposals overall from 20.5% in 2009, to 30.7% in 2011. This was mirrored by growth in the success rate of proposals from resident Australians. The most striking result however is the 41.9% success rate of proposals from “returning Australians” in 2011, while in comparison the success rate of proposals of foreign nationals was only 15.7% in the same year.
These figures support the idea that the Future Fellowships program can provide excellent opportunity for retaining Australian researchers, or recruiting Australian researchers to the University, particularly those currently located overseas.
Submission The Future Fellowships program is coming to a close. There are no more application rounds scheduled beyond the next round for funding to commence in 2013, so now is a good time to start thinking about how to take advantage of this last and significant research funding opportunity before it vanishes.
Funding Rules for the final round may likely be released in September 2012 with applications predicted to close around October / November this year. The Translational Research Grant is designed to further develop ancer research capacity and competitiveness in translational research. The overall aim of the NBCF Translational Research Grant scheme is to support research that either:
- Aims to translate breast cancer research across the spectrum into the development of new methods for prevention, early-detection screening, diagnosis and therapy (including supportive care) through trialling in the clinical or applied setting; OR
- Translates results from clinical studies into clinical practice and/or health policy and/or health decision making processes.
Funding & Duration This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR). The maximum funding available for each Translational Research Grant is up to $250,000 per annum for up to five years.
The funding also supports the costs of the proposed research and may include items, such as cost of facilities and services, storage of biospecimen samples, patient/population research recruitment, treatment costs, development of resources, data collection and third-party contractual services for peri-clinical activity. Overhead costs and purchase of major equipment items cannot be supported via this scheme.
Eligibility The proposed Project must be located/managed/operated under the auspices of a University, hospital or major research institution(s) located within Australia.

The NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health – Projects (Partnership Projects) provide funding and support to create new opportunities for researchers and policy makers to work together, in order to define research questions, and undertake research and also to interpret and implement the findings relevant to the delivery, organisation, funding and access to health services. These research topics are investigator initiated.
The application deadline for the third call for NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health – Partnership Projects 2012 is 29 January 2013.
NHMRC has changed the arrangements for this scheme to allow applicants to apply at any time during the year rather than through just one annual round.

The Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC) is inviting collaborative multi-disciplinary proposals by way of Preliminary Project Applications (PPA) as part of a two-stage process to address the two high-priority areas of:
- Grapevine germplasm
- Yeast and bacterial germplasm.
Grapevine germplasm: Planting material is the foundation of the wine sector. Planting decisions require high-quality germplasm that is resilient to future climate challenges while being able to deliver desired wine quality and styles. Research will focus on developing, evaluating and identifying rootstocks, varieties and clones that produce desirable wine styles, while possessing a number of other essential properties such as tolerance to drought, heat, salt, soil-borne pests and diseases.
Yeast and bacterial germplasm: Fit-for-purpose yeast and bacterial germplasm are key ingredients in the efficient production of superior wine at a range of price points. Research will focus on developing and evaluating new and enhanced fit-for purpose yeast and bacterial germplasm.
These are two of the priority research areas identified in the GWRDC’s Strategic Research, Development and Extension Plan 2012–17.

The Field Naturalists Society of South Australia Inc. (FNSSA) established the Lirabenda Endowment Fund (LEF) with the intention of making available research grants to encourage and promote research into the biota and natural environment of South Australia.
The Lirabenda Research Grants Committee considers all applications for grants from the Lirabenda Endowment Fund with this intention in mind.
The following are general guidelines to provide applicants with information on projects that the Lirabenda Endowment Fund is likely to support:
- Projects that increase knowledge and understanding of native species and their habitats
- Projects relating to management and conservation of South Australian species and their environment
- Projects that investigate factors relating to declining or threatened species of plants and animals. Preference is given to species that are endemic to South Australia
- Projects leading to improved management of species that cause environmental damage in South Australia
Duration & Funding
Lirabenda Endowment Fund grants are for one year only. If the research proposed is part of a larger study the applicant must describe a project with a one-year time-frame.
The maximum amount available for all grants in any one year will be determined by the FNSSA Council before applications are called. For 2013 the suggested maximum award will probably not exceed $3000.

The objectives of the Small Environmental Grants Scheme are to support Australian biodiversity projects that are concerned with one or more of the following:
- monitoring and recording data
- community education
- community capacity building (training)

Funding
There is no official limit as grant amounts can change, dependent on Sponsor's income. At the present, small grants are generally offered at around $2,000-$10,000 with the average around $8,000. Strong projects may attract more than $10,000. Applicants are advised to refer to the Awarded Grants section of the Sponsor's website for a rough guide.
Eligibility
Academic applicants need to show how their research is directly linked to a community group doing conservation work. Research needs to be of benefit to those groups working on habitat or species conservation.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announces the second round of its Reinvent the Toilet Challenge designed to prototype a means of dealing effectively and cost-efficiently with human waste for the 2 billion people on earth who currently lack access to safe and affordable sanitation.
This Challenge intends to fund the concept development, design, and prototyping of a
waterless, hygienic toilet that costs less than $0.05 per
user per day.

The MSIF offer International Research Meeting Grants to help support the costs of the costs of organisation, administration and hosting of meetings with a focus on MS research, as well as participation and attendance at these meetings. The aim of this grant is to encourage communication of MS research between countries and to promote new collaborative international research projects.
Please note that this grant is not intended simply to support individual attendance at meetings.

Each grant is likely to be of the order of £5,000. The MSIF aims to provide several International Meeting Grants per calendar year.

To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his specific interest and competencies.
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)is to accelerate the discovery of causal genes and variants that influence the risk for disease; and conduct follow-up studies of particular genetic variants to gain novel insights into the functions of these variants and the mechanisms by which they may contribute to disease. Genomic regions of interest are primarily those identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) although other types of evidence may also inform the rationale for a given study.
These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.
Funding & Duration
An application may request direct costs of up to $350,000 per year. Application budgets need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The project duration may be up to four years.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) solicits basic and pre-clinical research applications that study the combined and interactive effects of substance abuse and HIV-1 infection on glial cell biology. Glial cells express a variety of neurotransmitter receptors, transporters, and other molecular entities that are targets of drugs of abuse. Additionally, viral and host responses to HIV-1 infection usurp and alter glial cell function.
The goal of this FOA is to encourage research to determine the molecular and cellular consequences of substance abuse, HIV-1 infection, and their interactions on glial cells within the central nervous system (CNS).
Funding & Duration Application budgets are not to exceed US $500,000 in direct costs per year, but should reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The module budget format should be used for direct costs requests up to US $250,000 per year. The maximum project period is 5 years.

This reissued funding opportunity announcement (FOA) calls for collaborative applications between institutions in the United States, or other developed countries, and research institutions in developing countries affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The goal of this FOA is to strengthen the research infrastructure of local institutions in developing countries and provide support for a small portfolio of high impact social and/or behavioural science research on HIV/AIDS.

The Endangered Archives Programme offers a number of grants every year to individual researchers world-wide to locate vulnerable archival collections, to arrange their transfer wherever possible to a suitable local archival home, and to deliver copies into the international research domain via the British Library.
Scope and Objectives
The principal objective of the Programme is to facilitate scholarship and research by identifying and preserving important archival (or more precisely, archivable) material at risk of neglect, physical deterioration, destruction, or irresponsible care.
For the purposes of the Programme, archives will be interpreted widely to embrace not only rare printed sources (books, serials, newspapers, maps, ephemera, etc.) and manuscripts in any language, but also visual materials (drawings, paintings, prints, posters, photographs, etc.), audio or video recordings, and even other objects and artefacts but normally only where they are found in association with a documentary archive.
Funding & Duration
Funding is generally available for up to one year. There are two grants available via this programme:
Pilot Projects - £10,000
Pilot Project Grants are intended to support investigation into the potential and/or feasibility of a major project are particularly welcomed by the Programme.
Major Projects - £50,000

New Investigator Awards provide a flexible package of funding that is driven by the requirements of the proposed research. A New Investigator Award might be anything up to £425k per year and for any duration up to a maximum of seven years.

- research expenses, including research assistance, animals, equipment, fieldwork costs and funding for collaborative activity

The Kroc Institute’s Visiting Research Fellows Program seeks to bring outstanding scholars focused on peace research to the University of Notre Dame during each academic year. Fellows conduct research related to an existing Institute emphasis while participating fully in the life of the Institute.
For the 2013-14 academic year, the Institute seeks applications for research focusing on the following topics:
Peace Processes
Applications are sought from scholars working on peacebuilding in the context of armed conflict, and post-conflict transformation. Preference will be given to scholars able to make use of the Peace Accords Matrix and similar academic tools in order to gain insights into conflict mediation.
Religion, Conflict and Peacebuilding
Applications are sought from candidates interested in the nexus between religion, conflict and peacebuilding. Preference will be given to candidates working on theoretical and conceptual questions in this growing field of inquiry, and to candidates who are researching issues relevant to the Contending Modernities research project.
Psychology and Peace Studies
The Kroc Institute seeks applications from scholars working at the nexus of psychology and peace studies, who are concerned with understanding how psychosocial processes affect peacebuilding and conflict prevention. A focus in one or more of these topics is preferred:
- youth risk and resilience processes
- psychological dimensions of protracted conflict
- connections between emotions, attitudes, and behaviours in divided societies
- social identity and intergroup contact
- social ecological models and methods, and/or
- adaptive or positive functioning following mass violence

Junior fellows receive a stipend of US $25,000 per semester; senior fellows receive US $30,000 per semester. Housing is provided in furnished Institute apartments at no cost. Funding
JDRF and MGF provide grants of up to $2,000 for domestic travel, and up to $4,000 for international travel to early stage scientists, and allied health and nursing professionals. The awards are designed to provide funding for travel to research institutions or scientific meetings, for the purpose of furthering the recipient’s expertise in type 1 diabetes research or management.
Two categories of Travel Grants are available:
Early Stage Scientist Travel Grants for medical and science graduates who are undertaking type 1 diabetes research, and researchers in the early stage of their career (PhD students or not more than 5 years post-doctoral).
Allied Health and Nursing Travel Grants for allied health or nurse professionals or students, enrolled in a post graduate research program, whose research will impact on the lives of people with type 1 diabetes and their carers and families.

The RIRDC Rural Women's Award is open to all women involved in primary industries and resource development. The Award's main objective is to support women with demonstrated leadership capacities, who have the desire and commitment to make a greater contribution to their industries and communities.
Prize
The $10,000 Bursary is the major prize for each State and Territory winner to provide resources to develop your vision into a project or initiative that will support your professional development and will benefit primary industries and rural Australia.
- Based examples of previous prize-winners, bursaries may be used to:
- Build your leadership, business and management skills
- Undertake an overseas study tour to grow your knowledge of innovations and markets
- Attend conferences to grow your knowledge and networks with industry
- Run workshops or a speaking tour in an area where you see a need and have expertise

The Bursary cannot be used for further education such as a Masters or Doctorate degree, or for buying capital equipment, without explicit approval from the RIRDC

These prestigious Fellowships are named after Dr John Cade AM (1912-1980), an Australian psychiatrist working in Melbourne after World War II, who discovered the effectiveness of lithium as a treatment for bipolar disorder.
Successful applicants will be established researchers with an exemplary international record of achievement, have expertise in innovative research and research translation and have a demonstrated ability to expand Australia’s capacity in mental health research
Funding & Duration
Up to two Fellowships of $750,000 per annum for five years will be awarded in this one-off scheme. The Fellowship package is provided to support or fund the Fellow’s salary and must also be used to support a team of researchers and/or the costs associated with the proposed research.
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

To support a discrete, specified, circumscribed project to be performed by the named investigator(s) in an area representing his specific interest and competencies.
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage biomedical, behavioural, and social science research that will inform the development and evaluation of regulations on tobacco product manufacturing, distribution, and marketing. Research projects must address the research priorities related to the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) as mandated by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA), Public Law 111-31.
Research results from this FOA are expected to generate findings and data that are directly relevant to inform the FDA's regulation of the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products to protect public health.
Funding & Duration
Application budgets are not limited, but need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The maximum project period is 5 years.

R03 - Small Research Grants
To provide research support specifically limited in time and amount for studies in categorical program areas. Small grants provide flexibility for initiating studies which are generally for preliminary short-term projects and are non-renewable.
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage biomedical and behavioural research that will inform the development and evaluation of regulations on tobacco product manufacturing, distribution, and marketing. Research projects must address the research priorities related to the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).
Research results from this FOA are expected to generate findings and data that are directly relevant in informing the FDA's regulation of the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products to protect public health.
Funding & Duration
The combined budget for direct costs for the two year project period may not exceed US $100,000. No more than US $50,000 in direct costs may be requested in any single year. The total project period may not exceed two years.

The Max Weber Programme is Europe’s largest postdoctoral programme offering 1 and 2-year fellowships in the social sciences and humanities. It is funded by the European Commission (DG Education and Culture) and hosted by the European University Institute in Florence.
The Programme is designed for junior post-docs who have received a doctorate in economics, law, history, social and political sciences, or a related field, within the last 5 years, and who want to advance in their research and academic training, in an active multidisciplinary environment before entering the international job market, or in the early stages of their academic careers.
Funding
Fellows are required to live in Florence for the duration of their Fellowship in order that they may take an active part in the programme and in the academic activities of their department. The basic stipend is € 2,000 per month.

Through its Jean Monnet Fellowship Programme the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) offers one or two year fellowships to post-docs in an early stage of their academic career.

The Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) National Taxonomy Research Grant Program provides grants for taxonomic research. Grants are awarded for research projects where the primary aim is to undertake taxonomic research on the Australian biota or to develop products that aid in the dissemination of taxonomic information. The program also supports projects that build Australian taxonomic capacity.
Priority Areas 2013-2014
Projects funded under the National Taxonomy Research Grant Program must be public good in focus and support the Australian Government’s National Research Priorities. Within the National Research Priorities, the following specific criteria will be used by the ABRS to determine whether a project is eligible for an ABRS grant.
- Biodiversity, Conservation and Vulnerable and Endangered Species
- Public, Plant and Animal Health
- Building Taxonomic Capacity
Capacity Building Grants
The ABRS offers Capacity-Building Grants in the form of Honours and Masters scholarships as well as more Ph.D. awards. In addition, non-salaried researcher grants are offered on an annual basis to allow the completion of projects by non-salaried researchers. A particular priority for these grants is to capture knowledge from senior, retired professionals and allow mentoring of junior researchers.
Funding
The ABRS is offering applicants starting a Ph.D. on an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) in 2012 the opportunity to top up the existing APA rate ($23,728 in 2012) by $10 000 per year. The Ph.D. research project of applicants must be focused on taxonomy or systematics analysis and address the ABRS Research Priorities.

All Research & Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants have a co-funding requirement. Applicants must have obtained a commitment for the applicable amount of co-funding for their application to be considered. Salary may be included as co-funding, however, in an instance where two projects are of equal scientific merit but one has salary co-funding and the other cash co-funding, the project with cash co-funding will be ranked higher. In-kind contributions will be recognised but will not replace the requirement for additional co-funding input.

The Group of Eight (G08) offers eight annual fellowships to early career researchers in Europe to work in Go8 universities for up to six months. This scheme recognises the importance of international contacts for researchers at the beginning of their career. It is envisaged that Fellows will continue to collaborate with Australian research partners when they return to their home institutions.
Eligibility
Early career researchers from the following countries are eligible to apply:
- Bulgaria
- The Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Hungary
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Poland
- Romania
- Russia
- Slovakia
- Croatia
Applicants must also:
- have completed a PhD less than five years prior to application for the Fellowship
- be under 40 years of age at the time of application
- be a citizen of one of the designated countries listed above
- reside in one of the designated countries listed above (it need not be the same country as your citizenship)
- have been employed (minimum half-time appointment) for at least six months prior to application by a university or research organisation (public or private) in one of the designated countries
- have sufficient competency in English to be able to adequately communicate with researchers in their host university
- are eligible to obtain an Australian Visiting Academic Visa (subclass 419) or equivalent Australian visa
Funding
Each fellow will receive benefits worth up to $20,000 to travel to Australia in 2013 and work at a Go8 university for up to six months.

Glial cells express a variety of neurotransmitter receptors, transporters, and other molecular entities that are targets of drugs of abuse. Additionally, viral and host responses to HIV-1 infection usurp and alter glial cell function.
The goal of this FOA is to encourage research to determine the molecular and cellular consequences of substance abuse, HIV-1 infection, and their interactions on glial cells within the central nervous system (CNS).
Funding & Duration
Application budgets are not to exceed US $500,000 in direct costs per year, but should reflect the actual needs of the proposed project. The module budget format should be used for direct costs requests up to US $250,000 per year. The maximum project period is 5 years.

These studies are essential for the translation of initial GWAS finding into biological insights, and ultimately important for improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of disease that could lead to predictive, diagnostic, and therapeutic advances.

The Translational Research Grant is designed to further develop ancer research capacity and competitiveness in translational research. The overall aim of the NBCF Translational Research Grant scheme is to support research that either:
- Aims to translate breast cancer research across the spectrum into the development of new methods for prevention, early-detection screening, diagnosis and therapy (including supportive care) through trialling in the clinical or applied setting; OR
- Translates results from clinical studies into clinical practice and/or health policy and/or health decision making processes.
Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2012 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
The maximum funding available for each Translational Research Grant is up to $250,000 per annum for up to five years.
The funding also supports the costs of the proposed research and may include items, such as cost of facilities and services, storage of biospecimen samples, patient/population research recruitment, treatment costs, development of resources, data collection and third-party contractual services for peri-clinical activity. Overhead costs and purchase of major equipment items cannot be supported via this scheme.
Eligibility
The proposed Project must be located/managed/operated under the auspices of a University, hospital or major research institution(s) located within Australia.

Applications for a training fellowship in 2013-2014 are invited from postdoctoral scientists who are Australian nationals, who intend to pursue a career in cancer research and wish to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research related to the Agency's mission and of priority for the Cancer Council Australia: to coordinate and conduct both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes and prevention of cancer.
This programme is supported by the Cancer Council Australia.
Funding, Location & Duration
This Fellowship is tenable at the IARC in Lyon, France working in a research Group. The fellowship is for a period of two years, (the second year being subject to satisfactory appraisal) attracting a stipend of 33, 000 Euros. The cost of travel for the Fellow, and in certain circumstances for dependants, will be met, a dependant's allowance paid, and health insurance covered.
Eligibility
These Fellowships are intended for junior scientists who are Australian Nationals, and who are engaged in research within the medical (and allied) sciences, and wish to pursue a career in cancer research. Candidates are required to finish their doctoral degree (M.D. or Ph.D.) within five years of the closing date for application, or be in the final phase of completing their doctoral degree.
