About the ARC Future Fellowships
The Australian Research Council's 'Future Fellowships' are significant Category 1 fellowships offered to outstanding Australian and international researchers, over four years, currently awarded at up to AUD $182,792 (inclusive of on costs) per annum. The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to promote research in areas of critical national importance.

In addition the amount awarded individual Fellows, the ARC will provide Administering Organisations with funding of up to AUD $50,000 per annum, which may be used for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the Future Fellow’s research.

Eligibility and Success Factors
The University was very successful in the last round of Fellowships, with a 43% success rate. Applicants need to have excellent research track records relative to opportunity. Based on the Funding Rules for the last round, dates for the award of PhD (or having achieved equivalent status) to be eligible for a Future Fellowship at the next application opportunity (i.e. for Fellowship funding beginning in 2013) are likely to be on or between 30 November 1997 and 30 November 2007.

Over the past 3 rounds there has been significant growth in national success rate of proposals overall from 20.5% in 2009, to 30.7% in 2011. This was mirrored by growth in the success rate of proposals from resident Australians. The most striking result however is the 41.9% success rate of proposals from “returning Australians” in 2011, while in comparison the success rate of proposals of foreign nationals was only 15.7% in the same year.

These figures support the idea that the Future Fellowships program can provide excellent opportunity for retaining Australian researchers, or recruiting Australian researchers to the University, particularly those currently located overseas.

 

Submission
The Future Fellowships program is coming to a close. There are no more application rounds scheduled beyond the next round for funding to commence in 2013, so now is a good time to start thinking about how to take advantage of this last and significant research funding opportunity before it vanishes.

Funding Rules for the final round may likely be released in September 2012 with applications predicted to close around October / November this year. The Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Program (ITRP) offers a suite of funding schemes attractive to both university-based researchers and industries. This dynamic Program will:

• fund research hubs and research training centres;
• support Higher Degree by Research students and postdoctoral researchers in gaining real-world practical skills and experience through placement in industry.

To achieve this, the Program will fund Industrial Transformation Research Hubs and Industrial Transformation Training Centres.

The three South Australian Universities invite currently enrolled Higher Degree by Research (HDR) and other students, who have recently commenced their program of study and are required to submit an ethics application to their University’s HREC, to attend the next Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans: Workshop for Students.

This interactive workshop aims to give participants:

• An understanding of the ethical issues that may arise in research involving human participants (across the full spectrum from biological samples to whole populations);
• Tools to analyse and address these issues;
• An understanding of what constitutes good practice in research; and
• Information on how to prepare an ethics approval application to the Universities’ Human Research Ethics Committees.

Human Research: Single Ethical Review and Approval within South Australia

The University of Adelaide accepts ethics approvals granted to its staff and students by the following five Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs). In these cases additional approval from the University of Adelaide HREC is not required:

National Institutes of Health: Mechanistic Research on CAM Natural Products (R01) - Advanced Notice of Funding Opportunity

 

The opportunity uses the R01 Research Project Grant (R01) funding mechanism.

Purpose of Grant
This opportunity is issued by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in collaboration with the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), at the National Institutes of Health. It invites Research Project Grant (R01) applications to study the potential mechanisms of action of promising CAM natural products (NPs).

Natural products are widely used by Americans for health purposes. Knowledge about the active components, their molecular and cellular targets, as well as markers of potential beneficial or harmful biological effects, are critical pieces of preliminary information needed to insure maximally informative clinical efficacy studies on these products.

Research on the development of improved methodology for the isolation and characterisation of constituents of natural products and on their determination in the natural matrix will also be supported under this initiative.

Funding & Duration
Budgets for direct costs of up to US $300,000 per year, and a project duration of up to five years may be requested for a maximum of US $1,500,000 direct costs over a five-year project period.

Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organisations) are eligible to apply.

The Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men’s Health is holding a half-day research event highlighting findings from the NHMRC-funded Men, Androgens, Inflammation, Lifestyle, Environment & Stress (MAILES) study (Project Grant #627227) .

At this free event there will be presentations relating to the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity and chronic disease; new insights into testosterone levels, lower urinary tract symptoms, erectile dysfunction and ageing in men; new concepts on depression and the influence of intelligence, cognitive function and socio-economic factors on health in men will be discussed; and we will introduce our research addressing the effects of environmental toxins on health.

2013 NHMRC Information Workshop

 

NHMRC INFORMATION WORKSHOP

The Research Branch is conducting a workshop about NHMRC Chief Investigator responsibilities and obligations. It will be particularly helpful for CIAs on new NHMRC grants, but everyone involved in NHMRC research will benefit. Speakers from Research Accounting, Legal Services and the Digital Library will also present essential information, including details relating to the new NHMRC Policy regarding open access to publications.

The workshop will also provide you with an opportunity to ask any questions you may have in relation to your award.

NHMRC: Request to Carry Forward Grant Funds

 

Carry forward requests for NHMRC Grants are to be submitted online via RGMS. In the final year of a grant where there is any amount of funds to be carried forward, this constitutes an extension to the grant and the Chief Investigator A (CIA) must log into RGMS and submit a grant variation request before 31 December in the final year of the grant.

To create your request select ‘Grantee Variation’ under the ‘Grant Management’ menu in RGMS, then select ‘New’ and choose 'Extend Grant Duration' as the variation type.

Premier's Research and Industry Fund - Applications Open

 

Since its establishment in 2003/04 the SA Government through the Premiers Science and Research Fund has provided an investment in South Australian research and development of approximately $32 million with an additional $74 million contributed from partners.

The newly renamed Premier’s Research and Industry Fund, supports South Australia’s research community to ensure that it has the capacity and capability to compete successfully on a national and global scale. It encourages investment in key science and research areas that have the potential to generate significant economic, social and/or environmental benefits for the State.

Once a year the Bupa Health Foundation seeks submissions via Expressions of Interest process for the funding of new initiatives that provide clear benefit to the Australian community in one or more of the following key strategic areas:

The NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health – Projects (Partnership Projects) provide funding and support to create new opportunities for researchers and policy makers to work together, in order to define research questions, and undertake research and also to interpret and implement the findings relevant to the delivery, organisation, funding and access to health services.  These research topics are investigator initiated.

The application deadline for the third call for NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health – Partnership Projects 2012 is 29 January 2013.
NHMRC has changed the arrangements for this scheme to allow applicants to apply at any time during the year rather than through just one annual round.

Perpetual's 2013 funding round is now open. Past funding has been provided for a wide range of projects at different developmental stages. Early career researchers are encouraged to apply.

Funding & Duration
Gifts generally range between $10,000 and $100,000. In 2012, the average gift was approximately $60,000. The maximum amount an organisation can request is $200,000. Funding is generally provided for a one-year period.

Eligibility
Universities, hospitals, and medical research institutions may submit one application per department, up to a maximum of four applications per organisation. International organisations may submit three applications in total provided each application relates to a different activity.

The NSC Research Grants Program is designed to foster new and innovative research concerning issues relevant to Australia’s national security. The NSC invites scholars to submit an application (on an individual or collaborative basis) for funding to conduct research on one of the following priority topic areas:

1. Options for ‘developing national security policy’ or ‘a national security strategy’.
2. Prospects for enhancing Australia’s bilateral and regional security partnerships, with preference to research on Vietnam, Malaysia and ASEAN.
3. Sources of future instability in the Indo-Pacific region with significant implications for Australia’s national security.
4. The consequences of increased resource insecurity for economic development, stability and coercive action in the Indo-Pacific region.
5. Future security challenges for South-Pacific states, with priority to research on Papua New Guinea.
6. The relationship between Australia’s national security and the cyber environment.

Funding
For the purpose of the 2012 round of research awards, a total of $75,000 is available for at least two research grants with a maximum individual grant of up to $50,000. However, the College also welcomes applications for smaller grants and, depending on the merits of the applications received, may provide several smaller research grant awards totalling up to $75,000.

All applications must commit to the completion of a refereed NSC Occasional Paper by November 2013. All NSC Occasional Papers will be subject to a review process prior to publication in print and/or on the NSC website.

The Foundation seeks applications for grants for research into the causes, prevention and cure of disease in animals and in particular in the canine, feline and other companion animal species, and relevant to small animal veterinary practice.

Funding
Grants are unlikely to exceed $7,500 per year.

Eligibility
The type of research funded is wide ranging, but it must be for the direct benefit of companion animal species. Some examples would be investigation into arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and cancer, which focuses upon a better understanding of the basic disorder, and thus lead to improved methods of treatment and prevention.

The ARC Linkage Projects aim to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external Partner Organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide research training opportunities for researchers.

Funding & Duration
The ARC will award a minimum of $50,000 per year to a maximum of $300,000 per year. Specific cash and/or in-kind co-contributions are required from Partner Organisations.

Australian Research Council (ARC): Industrial Transformation Research Program

 

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Program (ITRP) offers a suite of funding schemes attractive to both university-based researchers and industries.

This dynamic Program will:

• fund research hubs and research training centres;
• support Higher Degree by Research students and postdoctoral researchers in gaining real-world practical skills and experience through placement in industry.

To achieve this, the Program will fund Industrial Transformation Research Hubs and Industrial Transformation Training Centres.

Industrial Transformation Research Hubs
The research hubs will encourage R&D projects that could help solve the big problems facing our industries today. In these hubs, managers, researchers and industry workers will work together to address everything from our need to reduce pollution in our manufacturing processes to our struggle to compete locally with a high Australian dollar.

Industrial Transformation Training Centres
The training centres will foster close partnerships between university-based researchers and the industry members who will use the research outcomes.

The Industrial Transformation Priorities are priority research areas identified by the ARC which will be updated from round to round. The Industrial Transformation Research Hubs for funding commencing in 2012 will seek applications addressing the Industrial Transformation Priorities of future food storage; food processing; manufacturing capabilities; product opportunities and other food related research.

Funding & Duration

• Research Hubs: a minimum of $500,000 per year to a maximum of $1 million per year. Projects may be applied for and awarded funding for a minimum of one to a maximum of five consecutive years.
  
  
• Training Centres: a minimum of $600,000 per year to a maximum of $1 million per year. Projects may be applied for and awarded funding for three consecutive years.

To support research projects that will enhance the capability of resources to serve biomedical research.

This reissued funding opportunity announcement (FOA) calls for collaborative applications between institutions in the United States, or other developed countries, and research institutions in developing countries affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The goal of this FOA is to strengthen the research infrastructure of local institutions in developing countries and  provide support for a small portfolio of high impact social and/or behavioural science research on HIV/AIDS.

Activities supported under this FOA should be led by local social and behavioural scientists in partnership with scientists from the United States and/or other developed countries.  Research should address social and behavioural issues in the prevention, care, and/or treatment of HIV/AIDS. The research projects and enhanced research infrastructure support should be designed to foster the emergence of local scientists as recognized leaders in behavioural and social sciences research on HIV/AIDS

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships aim to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build partnerships and linkages between Australian organisations and partner organisations in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.

The Fellowships are designed to provide short term opportunities for study, research and professional attachment programs in Australia, delivered by Australian organisations, to nominated fellows from eligible countries.

Prospective Fellows will typically be professionals already in leadership positions, or who have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes.

ALA Fellowships support a wide variety of areas and sectors. Australian organisations are encouraged to design programs that address priority areas, including disability and development, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation.

Funding
A maximum of $35,000 per Fellow is available which can include:

• return economy airfare from/to home country’s international hub
• in-Australia transport in respect of approved activities
• short course/tuition/training course costs
• accommodation and living expenses
• medical insurance costs when in Australia
• special assistance/assistive devices (to support people with disability)
• program overhead fees

The "International Short Visits" of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) allow for researchers working in Switzerland to go abroad, or for researchers from elsewhere to come to Switzerland.

The main aim of this funding instrument, which is open to all fields of research, is to initiate or to consolidate international collaborations. To reach this aim, short research projects between the host institution and the visiting fellow should be carried out during the stay.

Funding
The SNSF pays lump sums contributing solely to travel (one round trip) and living expenses of the visiting fellow. Since funding is based on lump sums defined by SNSF, the applicants do not need to indicate a budget in the application. For Swiss researchers going abroad, the money will be directly allocated to the visiting fellow. For researchers from abroad coming to Switzerland, the money will be transferred to the host institution.

The attendance of congresses, conferences, workshops, seminars or talks is not envisioned. Scientific sabbaticals are also not funded.

Eligibility
"International Short Visits" have no geographical restrictions. Swiss researchers can go to any other country or researchers from any country can come to Switzerland.

ASI PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships are available to support high calibre candidates whose research will lead to the advancement of innovation in Australian solar research, development and industry.

An institution hosting a candidate who is successful in obtaining an ASI Scholarship or Postdoctoral Fellowship will be required to enter into a funding agreement with the ASI in respect of the scholar or fellow, on terms satisfactory to the ASI.

PhD Scholarship - Eligibility

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Award supports exceptionally talented recent doctoral or medical graduates in their pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral training and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. These individuals should be exceptionally talented scientists who have demonstrated that they are the “best and brightest” of their peers. Applicants for this award must exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research.

Under this award mechanism, the postdoctoral fellow is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) and, as such, should write the projective narrative, training plan, and other application components with appropriate direction from the mentor.

A maximum funding of US $300,000 for direct costs (US $100,000 per year, plus indirect costs). The period of performance not to exceed 3 years.

The Endangered Archives Programme offers a number of grants every year to individual researchers world-wide to locate vulnerable archival collections, to arrange their transfer wherever possible to a suitable local archival home, and to deliver copies into the international research domain via the British Library.

Scope and Objectives
The principal objective of the Programme is to facilitate scholarship and research by identifying and preserving important archival (or more precisely, archivable) material at risk of neglect, physical deterioration, destruction, or irresponsible care.

For the purposes of the Programme, archives will be interpreted widely to embrace not only rare printed sources (books, serials, newspapers, maps, ephemera, etc.) and manuscripts in any language, but also visual materials (drawings, paintings, prints, posters, photographs, etc.), audio or video recordings, and even other objects and artefacts but normally only where they are found in association with a documentary archive.

Funding & Duration
Funding is generally available for up to one year. There are two grants available via this programme:

Pilot Projects - £10,000
Pilot Project Grants are intended to support investigation into the potential and/or feasibility of a major project are particularly welcomed by the Programme.

Major Projects - £50,000
Major Project Grants are intended to assist the gathering, relocation and/or copying of material.

Eligibility
Any accredited member of teaching or research faculty, and any registered post-graduate researcher, at a recognised UK or overseas university or similar higher education institution are eligible to apply. PhD candidates will only be considered for an award in exceptional circumstances

These prestigious Fellowships are named after Dr John Cade AM (1912-1980), an Australian psychiatrist working in Melbourne after World War II, who discovered the effectiveness of lithium as a treatment for bipolar disorder.

Successful applicants will be established researchers with an exemplary international record of achievement, have expertise in innovative research and research translation and have a demonstrated ability to expand Australia’s capacity in mental health research

Up to two Fellowships of $750,000 per annum for five years will be awarded in this one-off scheme. The Fellowship package is provided to support or fund the Fellow’s salary and must also be used to support a team of researchers and/or the costs associated with the proposed research.

To support research projects that will enhance the capability of resources to serve biomedical research.

This reissued funding opportunity announcement (FOA) calls for collaborative applications between institutions in the United States, or other developed countries, and research institutions in developing countries affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The goal of this FOA is to strengthen the research infrastructure of local institutions in developing countries and  provide support for a small portfolio of high impact social and/or behavioural science research on HIV/AIDS.

Activities supported under this FOA should be led by local social and behavioural scientists in partnership with scientists from the United States and/or other developed countries.  Research should address social and behavioural issues in the prevention, care, and/or treatment of HIV/AIDS. The research projects and enhanced research infrastructure support should be designed to foster the emergence of local scientists as recognized leaders in behavioural and social sciences research on HIV/AIDS

Application budgets are not limited, but need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this FOA may not exceed five years.

The Australian Lung Foundation / Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Fellowship supports research to improve the diagnosis and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Australia. Specifically, the proposed research must be aimed at developing and/or delivering optimal care to people with COPD.

Relevant domains of research inquiry range from evaluation of population screening initiatives; interventions to improve diagnostic accuracy within primary care; through to issues of management in the context of a clinician-patient interaction to system level issues to do with the organisation, financing and performance of the health system, including COPD management of indigenous and ethnic minorities within Australia.

Funding & Duration
The Fellowship is available as either a one or two year award, with a value of $80,000 per annum, and is tenable in conjunction with additional financial support.

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Fellowships aim to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build partnerships and linkages between Australian organisations and partner organisations in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East.

The Fellowships are designed to provide short term opportunities for study, research and professional attachment programs in Australia, delivered by Australian organisations, to nominated fellows from eligible countries.

Prospective Fellows will typically be professionals already in leadership positions, or who have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes.

ALA Fellowships support a wide variety of areas and sectors. Australian organisations are encouraged to design programs that address priority areas, including disability and development, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development and water and sanitation.

Funding
A maximum of $35,000 per Fellow is available which can include:

• return economy airfare from/to home country’s international hub
• in-Australia transport in respect of approved activities
• short course/tuition/training course costs
• accommodation and living expenses
• medical insurance costs when in Australia
• special assistance/assistive devices (to support people with disability)
• program overhead fees

 

Eligibility
Applications are not accepted from individuals or overseas organisations. The general eligibility requirements of fellows are that they must:

• Be a citizen of, and residing in, an eligible country
• Not have Australian permanent residence status or be applying for permanent residency
• Have been working in their country of citizenship and in areas relevant to their proposed training in Australia, prior to the date of the proposed commencement of their Fellowship
• Be able to take up the nominated Fellowship Program at the time and for the duration proposed by the Australian organisation
