About the ARC Future Fellowships
The Australian Research Council's 'Future Fellowships' are significant Category 1 fellowships offered to outstanding Australian and international researchers, over four years, currently awarded at up to AUD $182,792 (inclusive of on costs) per annum. The aim of Future Fellowships is to attract and retain the best and brightest mid-career researchers to promote research in areas of critical national importance.
In addition the amount awarded individual Fellows, the ARC will provide Administering Organisations with funding of up to AUD $50,000 per annum, which may be used for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the Future Fellow’s research.
Eligibility and Success Factors
The University was very successful in the last round of Fellowships, with a 43% success rate. Applicants need to have excellent research track records relative to opportunity. Based on the Funding Rules for the last round, dates for the award of PhD (or having achieved equivalent status) to be eligible for a Future Fellowship at the next application opportunity (i.e. for Fellowship funding beginning in 2013) are likely to be on or between 30 November 1997 and 30 November 2007.
Over the past 3 rounds there has been significant growth in national success rate of proposals overall from 20.5% in 2009, to 30.7% in 2011. This was mirrored by growth in the success rate of proposals from resident Australians. The most striking result however is the 41.9% success rate of proposals from “returning Australians” in 2011, while in comparison the success rate of proposals of foreign nationals was only 15.7% in the same year.
These figures support the idea that the Future Fellowships program can provide excellent opportunity for retaining Australian researchers, or recruiting Australian researchers to the University, particularly those currently located overseas.
Submission
The Future Fellowships program is coming to a close. There are no more application rounds scheduled beyond the next round for funding to commence in 2013, so now is a good time to start thinking about how to take advantage of this last and significant research funding opportunity before it vanishes.
Funding Rules for the final round may likely be released in September 2012 with applications predicted to close around October / November this year. Until the release of these Funding Rules the Rules for the current round might provide useful background: http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/futurefel/ft_fundingrules.htm
Intending applicants need to submit a Notification of Intent (NoI) form via email to arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au as soon as possible. This form, along with other submission details, is also available on the Research Branch’s ARC website: http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/
If you have any queries about Future Fellowships, please email arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au

The three South Australian Universities invite currently enrolled Higher Degree by Research (HDR) and other students, who have recently commenced their program of study and are required to submit an ethics application to their University’s HREC, to attend the next Ethics and Integrity in Research with Humans: Workshop for Students.
This interactive workshop aims to give participants:
- An understanding of the ethical issues that may arise in research involving human participants (across the full spectrum from biological samples to whole populations);
- Tools to analyse and address these issues;
- An understanding of what constitutes good practice in research; and
- Information on how to prepare an ethics approval application to the Universities’ Human Research Ethics Committees.
Participants who attended previous workshops have commented:
“ An excellent course...highly necessary for beginning researchers”
“I am now much more confident to proceed with the ethics approval process and understand this as a useful contribution to my research”
“I think it is great that the 3 universities get together and provide this seminar. Well done!”
Current HDR students who have research projects which require human research ethics approval are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop.
Places are limited and on-line registration is essential at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/ethics/human/training. Please direct any enquiries about the workshop to oreci_training@adelaide.edu.au.

The Forum for European–Australian Science and Technology Cooperation (commonly known as “FEAST”) was an organisation established by the Australian Government and the European Union to highlight, promote, and facilitate research collaboration between their respective communities.
The FEAST project concluded on 30 June 2012. A new bilateral project is currently in the final stages of negotiation with the European Commission (EC) to continue to support Australian-European research cooperation. The EC has agreed in principle to co-fund a project known as ‘Connecting Australian-European Science and Innovation Excellence’ (CAESIE) involving Australian and European partners. Matching support will be provided by the Australian partners led by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education. It is anticipated that CAESIE will commence in October 2012.
CAESIE aims to foster new innovative collaborations between researchers, small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), and other innovation actors from both Europe and Australia. CAESIE will also provide a forum for Australian participation in Horizon 2020, which will replace the 7th Framework Programme (FP7) of the EC in 2014.
A CAESIE website will replace the current FEAST website later this year. Further information will be provided on this FEAST website as soon as it becomes available.
During the interim period support for Australian involvement in FP7 can be obtained from Australia’s official FP7 National Contact Points

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. Across a variety of funding mechanisms, the Trust supports researchers in biomedical research and the medical humanities, including funding for public engagement, education, and the application of research to improve health.
New Investigator Awards support outstanding researchers who are no more than five years from appointment to their first academic position, but who can already show that they have the ability to innovate and drive advances in their field of study. They should be able to articulate a compelling vision for their research and demonstrate the talent, track record and originality to achieve it.
Funding & Duration
New Investigator Awards provide a flexible package of funding that is driven by the requirements of the proposed research. A New Investigator Award might be anything up to £425k per year and for any duration up to a maximum of seven years.
The award covers the direct costs of carrying out the research, such as:
- research expenses, including research assistance, animals, equipment, fieldwork costs and funding for collaborative activity
- travel and subsistence for scientifically justified visits
- overseas allowances where appropriate
Eligibility
Chief Investigators must be based in the UK, the Republic of Ireland or a low or middle-income country. Overseas applicants should fulfil the eligibility criteria for principal applicants. Researchers from low and middle-income countries who have a track record of Wellcome Trust funding as a principal investigator, co-applicant or fellow may apply directly for certain types of support without a UK based collaborator.
Submission
Please forward a copy of your application, accompanied by a signed and completed hardcopy of the University's Grant Application Coversheet to Dr Don McMaster, by emailing don.mcmaster@adelaide.edu.au.
