The ARC has introduced a new open access policy for ARC funded research which takes effect from 1 January 2013. The overarching aim of ARC's Policy is to ensure that the findings of publicly funded research are made available to the wider public as soon as possible, so that both the research community and the public may derive the maximum benefits of knowledge acquired through ARC funded research. According to this new policy the ARC requires that any publications arising from an ARC supported research project must be deposited into an open access institutional repository within a twelve (12) month period from the date of publication.

Commencement of the ARC Open Access Policy
The policy commenced on 1 January 2013, but the first publications are not potentially due to be made available in an institutional repository until after 1 January 2014. This policy will be incorporated into all new Funding Rules and Agreements released after 1 January 2013. It will NOT be applied retrospectively to pre-existing Funding Rules and Agreements.

Copyright Restrictions
The ARC is aware of copyright and licensing arrangements currently in place between authors, institutions and publishers. Should ARC policy conflict with existing copyright agreements, this information must be provided at the time of Final Report Submission.

For a detailed overview of the ARC’s Open Access Policy, please visit:
http://www.arc.gov.au/applicants/open_access.htm

Queries regarding the University’s compliance with this policy may be directed to the Research Branch by emailing arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au

The Research Branch compiles and advertises a comprehensive list of grants and other research funding opportunities sponsored by U.S. Federal Funding Agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

The AICC Grants Program provides funding for international arts and cultural projects that align with the objectives of the AICC. The program is not a typical arts funding program in that it is not primarily concerned with supporting artists and companies to tour internationally to develop their work. The program’s focus is on specific cultural relations objectives that contribute to advancing Australia’s foreign and trade policy priorities and enhance understanding of Australia overseas.

Priority Regions
The AICC Grants Program focuses on priority regions which reflect Australia's broad public diplomacy and foreign and trade policy interests. Applications must be for cultural diplomacy projects incorporating activities in priority regions. The AICC's priority regions, in order of priority, are:

  • Asia (from India to Indonesia to Mongolia)
  • South Pacific
  • Middle East and Africa
  • the Americas and Western Europe

Funding

Funding is capped at AUD $40,000 per application. Funding is intended to encourage partnerships with other areas of government, corporate sponsors and private donors, and applicants will normally be expected to demonstrate that they are seeking assistance from other sources.

The opportunity uses the U19 Research Program - Cooperative Agreements (U19) funding mechanism.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites multi-project applications to be part of a network of synergistic research teams focused on the immunological parameters of virus infection and vaccination that are important for understanding the key molecular and cellular immune mechanisms involved in the natural control of infection, the induction of protective immunity by vaccination, or the immune-mediated processes that cause pathology after virus infection or vaccination.

Studies involving multiple viruses are encouraged to foster discovery of novel immune mechanisms and generalizable principles of anti-viral immunity.

The viruses of interest to the Immune Mechanisms of Virus Control (IMVC) program are listed as part of the NIAID Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases. The ultimate goal of this program is to discover and define novel basic immune mechanisms for controlling virus infections that will lead to new potential targets for developing future vaccines and therapeutics.

Funding & Duration
Application budgets are limited to US $1.5 million direct costs per year, but need to reflect actual needs of the proposed project. The scope of the proposed project should determine the project period, however the maximum period is five years.

Natural products are widely used by Americans for health purposes. Knowledge about the active components, their molecular and cellular targets, as well as markers of potential beneficial or harmful biological effects, are critical pieces of preliminary information needed to insure maximally informative clinical efficacy studies on these products.

Research on the development of improved methodology for the isolation and characterisation of constituents of natural products and on their determination in the natural matrix will also be supported under this initiative.

Funding & Duration

  • Public policy
  • Urban development
  • Governance Impacts of technology on society
  • Population and/or migration
  • Environmental protection

The SA Grain Industry Trust (SAGIT or the Trust) has established funds for research, development, and extension into the growing, harvesting, storage, processing and marketing of grain in SA, in order to increase profitability and sustainability of the grains industry.

Funding & Duration
SAGIT does not receive Commonwealth funds and therefore qualifies as an Eligible Partner in the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Linkage Projects. Research Projects typically run for several months to a maximum of three years, reviewed annually. SAGIT will look favourably on projects where the applicant has shown initiative in identifying potential opportunities for cooperative funding arrangements.

Selection Criteria
Preference will be given to projects which meet the following criteria:

  • Major emphasis on benefit to SA farmers

  • Most work will be conducted in SA, but this does not exclude outside activities of benefit to SA.

  • Applications should outline the issue being addressed, why it is important to farmers, the key questions, a brief summary of work done to date by the applicant and others, and why the approach has potential to succeed.

  • Without losing sight of innovative research, emphasis will be on more immediate outcomes for farmers through development and adaptation of research, and extension.

  • Greater emphasis will be placed on the impacts of the work on the farm system and business (rather than just science per se), and on the path to market for project outcomes both at the time of application, during the project and in the final evaluation.

  • Opportunities for synergies and on leveraging through partnerships with other funding sources and industry.

  • Emphasis on project evaluation, especially in terms of real or potential farmer benefit and how the adoption of the results will be measured.

  • Commercial and IP revenues are an important consideration but not the main driver.

Capital Item Application
SAGIT will usually only consider funding Capital Items as a part of a Project, however in exceptional circumstances Capital Item Only Applications will be considered. The relevant form can be downloaded from www.sagit.com.au

Travel Application
SAGIT will usually only fund Travel as a part of a larger project, unless there is a demonstrable benefit to the SA Grains Industry.  The relevant form can be downloaded from www.sagit.com.au.
The call for travel applications occurs at the same time as capital and new applications and follows the same guidelines.

The Australian Synchrotron is a source of highly intense light ranging from infrared to hard x-rays used for a wide variety of research purposes. Researchers may apply for beamtime via the facility's Beamlines program.

The Australian Synchrotron is now accepting proposals for the second round of 2013 (May-Sept).

This includes beamtime on:

IR: Infrared Microscope
FIRHR: Far-IR and High Resolution
MX1: Macromolecular Crystallography
MX2: Micro Crystallography
PD: Powder Diffraction
SXR: Soft X-ray Spectroscopy
SAXS: Small and Wide Angle Scattering
XAS: X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
XFM: X-ray Fluorescence Microscopy
IMBL: Imaging and Medical

Applying for Merit and Foundation Investor beamtime
Normal merit beamtime applications are the standard method to apply for beamtime at the Australian Synchrotron and approximately 50% of beamtime is awarded to merit proposal applications. Foundation investor beamtime is only open to applicants from the 11 foundation investor (FI) consortia members and makes up approximately 30% of the time available (i.e. approximately 3% per FI consortium).
