Presented by the High Comission of Canda, this session will provide information on Canadian research grants (all disciplines) available to academic staff and postgraduate students.

The session will cover funding available from Canada’s three major federal research councils:

  • The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
  • The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and
  • The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

The High Commission of Canada will also provide information on the prestigious Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships - and other grants offered by some of the provinces - as well as other non-government organisations.

In order to address the requirements of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, the University recently launched a new research data service, DataConnect. This service is provided to you to assist in meeting the requirements of the Code to “address the ownership of research materials and data, their storage, their retention beyond the end of the project, and appropriate access to them by the research community”.

DataConnect is the University’s online system for capturing information about research data. DataConnect is available to all staff at the University, with a focus on collecting data arising from Category 1 grants. All University researchers in receipt of current Category 1 grants will receive an email from DataConnect upon completion of the project, requesting that you provide a description of your dataset or collection. The descriptive information (metadata) you provide will be made available for the public to view on Research Data Australia. Please note that confidential information should not be included in your DataConnect record.

DataConnect is managed by the University Libraries on behalf of the Office of the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research).

About NVivo Software
NVivo10 software is a comprehensive data analysis and management tool that supports qualitative and hybrid research methods across all disciplines.

Development company QSR, designers of the NVivo software will be hosting webinar workshop "NVivo Essentials", which is free for University of Adelaide staff.

This workshop is a 6 hour session, spread over 3 x 2 hour sessions.

How to Register
There is a limit of 20 participants in each workshop, therefore:

  • this offer is only available to staff who are not HDR students
    HDR students are able to access NVivo10 sessions run by the Grad Centre throughout the year (see http://www.adelaide.edu.au/red/student/timetable.html)

  • the first to register will receive the places

  • please only register if you can participate in all three sessions of the series

  • registrations and email requests prior to the first set of webinars will determine whether the next set of workshops will be a repeat of the NVivo Basics Course or an Advanced course.

Names are also being taken for invitation to future Basic and Advanced NVivo10 workshops including webinars and potentially on campus in-lab classes. Expressions of interest will help determine choice of workshop, and future dates and days for the rest of the year, so please email Cate Jerram with an indication of your interest and timetabling preferences.

A Project Grant is an award made in support of either a biomedical or social and applied research project within an Australian institution proposed by an appropriately qualified investigator.

The award of project grants is MSRA’s main avenue for the support of research relevant to multiple sclerosis in universities, hospitals or other recognised research institutions. Since these awards will normally be made for a period of two or three years only, the purpose is primarily to assist investigations in which considerable progress can be expected over this or a shorter period.

Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2013 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

Grant-in-aid funding available, typically for no more than $30,000 - $140,000 per annum, and up to 3 years. MSRA does not intend to provide long term salaries for support staff.


Eligibility
Successful applicants for this Award will need to have strong experience in MS research.

The purpose of the Vanguard Grants award is to provide funding to test the feasibility of innovative concepts in public health and/or health services (including clinical service delivery) which may lead to larger, more rigorous testing in the future. These projects will provide tangible outcomes with the potential to improve cardiovascular health. The award is designed to encourage research and innovation in clinical/public health interventions and cardiovascular health practices.

Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2013 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

Grants are valued at up to $75,000 for one year.


Eligibility
Open to all cardiovascular researchers. (Note: This award does not fund basic clinical or biomedical research)

The Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia invites applications for research funding in 2014.

Eligibility
Grants will be available to ophthalmologists, trainee ophthalmologists or for work being done in University Departments of Ophthalmology. If the investigator is applying from overseas, the majority of the project work should be conducted in Australia with both the investigator and the project being connected to an Australian institution.

Funding & Duration
The amount of money available each year varies and the ORIA will consider funding individual grants during 2014 for up to $50,000 for a period of one year. Grants are available for a period of one year.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners is committed to supporting new and emerging general practitioner researchers to conduct research into primary health care, and general practice.

Grants schemes offered are allied with a range of funding partners, offering support for research in a variety of health areas, including Indigenous health policy & practice, diabetes management, and the diagnosis & prevention of bone diseases. Funding and duration of research varies according to scheme.

Eligibility
Research grants are available to RACGP member general practitioners, or general practice registrars through the RACGP Foundation. New and emerging general practitioner researchers are encouraged to apply.

The NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health Projects (Partnership Projects) provide funding and support to create new opportunities for researchers and policy makers to work together, in order to define research questions, and undertake research and also to interpret and implement the findings relevant to the delivery, organisation, funding and access to health services.  These research topics are investigator initiated.


The application deadline for the first call for NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health – Partnership Projects 2013 is 23 April 2013.
NHMRC has changed the arrangements for this scheme to allow applicants to apply at any time during the year rather than through just one annual round.


Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2013 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).
Projects may be of any duration up to five (5) years and the maximum amount of NHMRC funding that may be requested for a single application is $1.5 million.

The Native Title Anthropologist Grants Program aims to attract a new generation of junior anthropologists to native title work and encourage senior anthropologists to remain within the system.

The program targets three priority areas of need:

  • Training and development for anthropologists to smooth the transition from study to native title field work
  • Professional development and support for anthropologists working in the native title sector
  • Forging stronger links between academic and applied anthropological work.

Funding
The amount of funding (exclusive of GST) available is expected to be $574,000 in 2013-14, $583,000 in 2014-15 and $594,000 in 2015-16. There are no limitations on the amount requested in individual applications.

Following an internal review of the program, the program guidelines have been updated from previous rounds. Please refer to the Native Title Anthropologist Grants Program Guidelines (revised March 2013) for more information.

The GRDC Industry Development Awards (IDAs) are specifically targeted at groups of Australian grain-growers for study tours or other forms of training approved by the GRDC. The aim is to develop new skills, build relationships and acquire new information that will contribute to building a sustainable and profitable grains industry. GRDC places a high priority on the dissemination and communication of knowledge gained from the experience offered through the IDA.

One of the National Archives' key roles is to promote archival research in Australia and to encourage scholarly use of our collection. Research Grants are designed to help scholars complete an innovative research project that:

  • is significant to Australian audiences 
  • makes substantial use of the National Archives collection 
  • produces articles, a book, website, exhibition, film or event to promote the National Archives collection

The Archives also participates in collaborative research with universities and other cultural institutions through the Australian Research Council grants scheme.

The International Collaborative Research Grant (ICRG) supports international research collaborations between two or more qualified scholars to support worldwide research in all branches of anthropology.

Priority will be given to those applications that make a strong case for a balanced collaboration between the applicant and co-applicant/s in all aspects of the research: fieldwork, analysis, and eventual publication.


Funding & Duration
The grants are for a maximum of US $35,000 for the research project.


Eligibility
Each researcher must hold a doctorate or equivalent qualification in anthropology or a related discipline.

The Australia-Malaysia Institute (AMI) grants are intended to provide seed funding for innovative proposals relevant to the aims and objectives of the Institute. This includes proposals which demonstrate the potential for the development of long-term links between individuals and institutions in Australia and their counterparts in Malaysia.

The AMI Board will consider grant proposals across a wide range of research fields, however applications which support implementation of the Australia in the Asia Century White Paper are highly encouraged.

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) supports hundreds of early-stage research projects, including many ideas that have never before been tested, and scientists from a wide range of disciplines and regions. The Explorations initiative funds innovative ideas that could lead to new vaccines, diagnostics, drugs, and other technologies targeting diseases that claim millions of lives every year.


Eligibility & Selection Criteria
All proposals must represent an innovative approach that is responsive to the topic. Grand Challenges Explorations is open to both foreign and domestic non-profit organisations, for-profit companies, international organisations, government agencies, and academic institutions. Grants will not be provided to individuals.


Funding & Duration
Phase I grants of US $100,000 are awarded in the first instance. Projects have one opportunity to apply for a follow-on Phase II grant of up to US $1,000,000. The term of the Phase I grants expires 18 months from the project start date.

The PH/TBI Research Program was initiated in 2007 for the purpose of complementing ongoing Department of Defense efforts towards promoting a better standard of care for psychological health (including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury in the areas of prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.


Funding & Duration
Applications can be either basic research, applied research, or a combination of basic and applied research.

  • For basic research awards, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance is US $1M plus indirect costs.

  • For applied research and combined awards, the maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance cannot exceed US $4M plus indirect costs.

The maximum period of performance is 4 years.

Independent investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent), and Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organisations) are eligible to apply.

The PRORP Idea Development Award is designed to promote new ideas that are still in the early stages of development and have the potential to yield highly impactful data and new avenues of investigation. This mechanism supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress in the clinical care of combat-related orthopaedic injuries.


Funding & Duration
The maximum allowable direct costs for the entire period of performance are US $500,000 plus indirect costs. The applicant may request the entire maximum funding amount for a project that may have a period of performance less than the maximum 3 years.


Eligibility
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organisations) are eligible to apply.

Purpose of Grant

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to appeal to a broad audience of alcohol and HIV/AIDS researchers, including:

  • alcohol researchers with no prior experience in HIV/AIDS research but with a keen appreciation for the relationship between problem drinking and HIV/AIDS and a strong interest in acquiring such experience.

  • HIV/AIDS researchers with no prior alcohol research experience who realize the importance of more intensive alcohol interventions to improving clinical outcomes among HIV-infected individuals; and those with prior research experience in the area of co-occurring HIV/AIDS and alcohol and other substance abuse.

The primary objectives for this announcement are to increase research:

  1. To characterise the relative importance of reducing alcohol misuse in the prevention of acquisition and transmission of HIV in order to identify and apply appropriate alcohol and HIV interventions as public health measures

  2. To more fully understand and prevent the progression of HIV disease in the presence of continued alcohol exposure; and

  3. To develop operational research frameworks for addressing the occurrence and persistence of infections in high-risk populations (e.g. minority women, young gay men, etc.), and translate findings into effective, culturally appropriate preventive and treatment interventions for these targeted populations.

The NHMRC TRIP Fellowship provides support for health care professionals (e.g. medical specialists, general practitioners, public health practitioners, physiotherapists, nurses, midwives, radiologists, and other allied health providers), health care personnel (health service managers, hospital department leaders, clinical trial managers) and policy makers to translate evidence into health care and public health improvements.

The Fellowship provides protected time for Fellows to develop the range of skills needed for leadership in research translation and to apply evidence to improve health care and/or public health. The TRIP Fellowship scheme is therefore aimed at developing early to mid-career applicants wishing to combine research translation with their career and is not designed to support applicants already established as health care leaders.

Award Conditions
Several awards may be made each year to assist outstanding students with the costs of attendance. The awards are intended as a contribution to expenses; they will not necessarily cover the full costs of travel and attendance.

The Australian Academy of Science invites Expressions of Interest from junior scientists who are no more than 30 years of age, to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States of America between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2014.


Eligibility
Proposals in any health-related field of natural science will be considered.  Only Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia living in Australia at the time of application are eligible to apply. At the time of application, applicants should be either:

  • in the first two years of a PhD degree or equivalent, or
  • have completed a Masters or a Bachelors with Honours degree, or
  • be in the first semester of a Masters of a Bachelors with Honours degree

Under this scheme applicants are expected to be undertaking PhD study in an Australian institution or intend to enrol in PhD study in an Australian institution.  Applicants can request travel support to access the international leading-edge research facilities and staff of the NIH.  The proposed visit should initiate long-term collaborations and facilitate the development of the applicant’s career.


Funding & Duration
The successful applicant will receive a contribution towards the direct return air travel between Australia and the host institution up to a maximum of AUD $2600, and a once off living allowance of up to a maximum of AUD $400, provided by the Adam J. Berry Memorial Fund (AJBMF). The duration of the visit is expected to be between six and 13 weeks. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will provide a small daily stipend during the participant’s stay in America. The program does not provide funds for bench fees or insurance costs.

Jointly sponsored by the AGA and the Goethe-Institut, the aim of this Fellowship is encourage a young Australian to visit Germany to study the language, and to pursue a special research interest. Prospective candidates should have excellent academic tertiary qualifications and the prospect of a promising career in business, law, science, political studies or arts.

The Fellowship covers a period of twelve weeks at a mutually agreed time. The chosen candidate will attend a German language course for eight weeks. The specific location of the course will be advised by the Goethe-Institut.

The chosen candidate must have a good working knowledge of the German language (level B1 or higher) and is expected to spend the remaining four weeks of his/her time in Germany researching a topic of particular interest to the candidate.


Conditions of the Award

The Fellowship provides for:

  • 12 weeks in Germany
  • eight weeks intensive language and cultural study with full accommodation and breakfast and one meal on course days
  • AUD $2,500 allowance towards a return economy airfare
  • AUD $6,000 allowance to facilitate a 4-week study tour throughout Germany

Where possible AGA will facilitate entry to areas of particular interest to the awardee, however candidates should ensure that their project does not assume that such entries will be available


Eligibility

This Fellowship is open to Australian citizens only. Australian-German citizens are not eligible to apply. Applicants must also be under the age of 35 on 1 July of the year the application is lodged.

The Mary Paton Research Award is a biennial award for breastfeeding research. An award of $2000 is offered for the best original paper on breastfeeding.

Eligiblity
In order for a paper to be eligible, it must satisfy the following criteria:

  • It may relate to any aspect of breastfeeding and may either be a report of original research or a critical review of the literature

Through the Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year Award, the Australian Government seeks to recognise the important contribution made by individuals or organisations working across Australia in the environment and sustainability arena. In particular, it recognises those who have made a significant contribution to our environment at a national level.

Nominations
This award invites nominations from individuals, groups or organisations who have demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment and service to the environment. The category is open to people or groups, whether they are working on a voluntary or paid basis, on environmental or sustainability projects. Possible examples include:

  • research or projects to improve biodiversity management, natural heritage or ecosystem conservation urban sustainability projects, including sustainable use of resources and energy efficiency

  • sustainable water projects pollution reduction projects, including air quality and renewable energy

  • advocacy and community education concerning the above areas.

Self nomination is welcome.

Prime Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award
This award recognises an outstanding contribution to the environment by a young person under the age of 25.

Prize
The annual US $100,000 prize recognises an individual whose own work, or work on behalf of an institution, has made a distinguished contribution to community building and who is committed to a built environment of the highest quality, anywhere in the world.

Eligibility
Nominees are not limited to a specific discipline and may include developers, public officials, academics, writers, journalists, researchers, urban planners and architects, among others. The purpose of the Future Leader Fellowship program is to support researchers to develop as independent researchers, develop their own research portfolio and to help them become the leaders of cardiovascular research groups.

Funding & Duration
This is a category 1 funding scheme, listed on the 2013 Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR).

Two levels of Future Leader Fellowship are offered:

  • Level 1: For researchers three to six years post awarding of their PhD on the application closing date.
  • Level 2: For researchers seven to ten years post awarding of their PhD on the application closing date.

Stipend Level 1 (pro rata) - $90, 000 p.a.
Project Support - $40,000 p.a.

Stipend Level 2 (pro rata) - $110, 000 p.a.
Project Support - $50, 000 p.a.


Eligibility

  • Level 1 - Must be 3–6 years post-PhD, in any area of cardiovascular health research including biomedical, clinical, public health and health service delivery.

  • Level 2 - Must be 7–10 years post-PhD (or equivalent), in any area of cardiovascular health research including biomedical, clinical, public health and health service delivery.

Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation collaborates with local and international researchers and organisations to deliver a meaningful program of research aimed at reducing the prevalence of problem gambling, and the severity of harm related to gambling.

Round five of the Grants for Gambling Research program invites researchers to submit project proposals under one of the two thematic areas:

  • stigma
  • changing gambling environments


Funding & Duration

The program provides funding of up to $200,000 over three years for investigator-initiated research projects. The program also invites early career researchers to apply for funding of up to $50,000 over two years.

Eligibility
The grants program is open to researchers working within universities, research institutes and other incorporated bodies.

The Early Career Researcher Showcase has been sponsored by CSIRO for over a decade: celebrating good research, communicated well.

Entrants are required to showcase their research project in 30 seconds, to win a trip to Melbourne to present their work at Collaborate/Innovate 2013, (15–17 May 2013), the annual conference of the Cooperative Research Centres Association. The Showcase is always one of the top sessions at CRCA's annual conference.

The Thiess International Riverprize, Australian Riverprize and IRF European Riverprize are awarded for excellence in river management, and are the world’s most prestigious environmental prizes. Since 1999, International RiverFoundation has awarded over AUD $3 million in Riverprize awards.

About each Award:

Thiess International Riverprize
The Thiess International Riverprize is valued at AUD $300,000 and consists of a AUD $200,000 cash prize and a AUD $100,000 grant to establish a twinning project.

The Thiess International Riverprize is open to Australian, European and all other International applicants. If Australian and European applicants choose to apply for the Thiess International Riverprize in 2013, they may not apply in any other category in the same year. Riverprize winners are not eligible to reapply in the same category for 10 years.


Australian Riverprize
The Australian Riverprize is valued at AUD $200,000 and consists of AUD $150,000 in cash prizes and a AUD $50,000 grant for the winner to establish a twinning project within Australia.

The Australian Riverprize is funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative, through the Water Smart Australia program. The Australian Government provided $1 million to fund the Australian Riverprize over a five-year period.

The Australian Riverprize is exclusively for Australian applicants. If you choose to enter the Australian Riverprize, you cannot also enter the Thiess International Riverprize in the same year.


IRF European Riverprize
The IRF European Riverprize is open to European applicants only. If you choose to enter the IRF European Riverprize, you cannot also enter the Thiess International Riverprize in the same year.

The PRORP Clinical Trial Development Award (CTDA) is intended to support the planning and development activities necessary to support preparation for clinical trials with the potential to have a significant impact on military combat-related orthopaedic injuries.

The Conservation Biology Grant is a program of the Nature Conservation Society of South Australia (NCSSA). The NCSSA Conservation Biology Grant aims to assist student research into aspects of conservation biology; and encourage students to share the results of research into conservation biology with the broader community.

The Conservation Biology Grant is likely to support research projects in South Australia which lead to:

  • improved understanding of the conservation status of species or ecological communities
  • recommendations to improve aspects of biodiversity conservation
  • improved understanding of species or ecological community ecology
  • improved understanding of threats to biodiversity
  • improved management of threatening processes


Eligibility

Funding is only available to research students undertaking studies at Honours Degree, Graduate Diploma, Masters Degree or PhD level at accredited Universities. Funding for Undergraduate projects will only be available in exceptional circumstances.


Funding
Funding is available to support travel for the purposes of field-work or research, equipment purchase or hire, purchase of materials or promotion of research results. Salaries, bursaries and conference travel will not be funded. Applicants can apply for up to $1,000. However, applications for smaller amounts will be regarded favourably. The NCSSA reserves the right to partially fund a project.

A Project Grant is an award made in support of either a biomedical or social and applied research project within an Australian institution proposed by an appropriately qualified investigator.

The award of project grants is MSRA’s main avenue for the support of research relevant to multiple sclerosis in universities, hospitals or other recognised research institutions. Since these awards will normally be made for a period of two or three years only, the purpose is primarily to assist investigations in which considerable progress can be expected over this or a shorter period.

Funding & Duration
Grant-in-aid funding available, typically for no more than $30,000 - $140,000 per annum, and up to 3 years. MSRA does not intend to provide long term salaries for support staff.


Eligibility
Successful applicants for this Award will need to have strong experience in MS research.
