Australian Research Council (ARC)

The Australian Research Council is a statutory authority within the Australian Government's Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (IISR) portfolio. Its mission is to deliver policy and programs that advance Australian research and innovation globally and benefit the community.

The ARC manages the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), a significant component of Australia's investment in research and development. Through the NCGP, the ARC supports the highest-quality fundamental and applied research and research training through national competition across all disciplines, with the exception of clinical medicine and dentistry.

Linkage-Infrastructure Equipment & Facilities (LIEF) provides funding assistance for the institutional resources essential for mounting high-quality research projects in a particular field, including associated indirect costs. The programme aims to develop collaborative arrangements between and within institutions, and with organisations outside the sector, in order to develop research infrastructure. Further, it allows the sharing of large-scale expensive facilities to enhance access in areas of recognised research strength and potential.

The Industrial Transformation Research Program (ITRP), recently announced by the ARC, offers a number of funding opportunities attractive to both university-based researchers and industries.

This dynamic Program will:

  • fund research hubs and research training centres;
  • support Higher Degree by Research students and postdoctoral researchers in gaining real-world practical skills and experience through placement in industry.

Industrial Transformation Research Hubs
These research hubs will encourage R&D projects that could help solve the big problems facing our industries today. In these hubs, managers, researchers and industry workers will work together to address everything from our need to reduce pollution in our manufacturing processes to our struggle to compete locally with a high Australian dollar.

The Industrial Transformation Research Hubs for funding commencing in 2012 will seek applications addressing the Industrial Transformation Priorities of future food storage; food processing; manufacturing capabilities; product opportunities and other food related research.

Co-Funding Requests
While cash co-funding from the Administering Organisation is not mandatory under either of these schemes, some applicants may feel that a University cash contribution is necessary to increase competitiveness. Any requests for cash co-funding must be made with reference to the University Cash Contributions in Competitive Research Grant Proposals Guidelines.

Any such requests must be made to the DVCR’s office (via the Research Branch) when notifying the Research Branch of your intention to submit (Notification of Intent) by Tuesday, 13 November 2012. Any cases for co-funding must provide a compelling strategic reason for the inclusion of University cash in the proposal AND demonstrate a significant return on investment for the proposed University cash contribution.

If you are intending to submit an ITRP Research Hub or Training Centre:
you will be required to submit a completed Notification of Intent (proforma) to the Research Branch (arcgrants@adelaide.edu.au) by COB, Tuesday 13 November 2012

The DVCR’s office will not give consideration to requests for co-funding unless this form has been completed and submitted to the Research Branch by 13 November 2012.
