2008 DEEWR Publications Collection

Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop

(1) Fundamentals of Program Planning

This course is centered on the belief that "it's all about the program." This intensive course will teach professional program development essentials and program evaluation. While most grant writing "workshops" treat program development and evaluation as separate from the writing of a proposal, this class will teach students the relationship between overall program planning and grant writing.

(2) Professional Grant Writing

Designed for both the novice and experienced grant writer, this course will make each student an overall proposal writing specialist. In addition to teaching the basic components of a grant proposal, successful approaches, and the do's and don'ts of grant writing, this course is infused with expert principles that will lead to a mastery of the process. Strategy resides at the forefront of this course's intent to illustrate grant writing as an integrated, multidimensional, and dynamic endeavour. Each student will learn to stop writing the grant and to start writing the story. Ultimately, this class will illustrate how each component of the grant proposal represents an opportunity to use proven techniques for generating support.

(3) Grant Research

At its foundation, this course will address the basics of foundation, corporation, and government grant research. However, this course will teach a strategic funding research approach that encourages students to see research not as something they do before they write a proposal, but as an integrated part of the grant seeking process. Students will be exposed to online and database research tools, as well as publications and directories that contain information about foundation, corporation, and government grant opportunities. Focusing on funding sources and basic social science research, this course teaches students how to use research as part of a strategic grant acquisition effort.

Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) - Call for Research Proposals

Internal Deadline

The Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) was established in July 2003 for seven years under the Federal Government’s Co-operative Research Centres program in response to the fires that affected Sydney in 2001/02. The CRC’s work program was driven by the research requirements for the improvement of policy and practice, as it existed in 2002. The CRC is now completing its fifth year and is focusing on adoption of the outcomes from that research agenda. The underlying focus for the future CRC work program is based upon a number of significant drivers for change including climate change and demographic movements.

The next step for the steering committee is to call for research proposals from potential research providers that address the identified outcomes. Please note that in responding to this request for proposals the steering committee is looking for a coordinated approach to addressing the outcomes that may include inputs from a range of research bodies.

Gambling Research Australia- Gambling: Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse Communities - Grants

The theme of Gambling and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Populations
is a broad topic that encompasses several elements. The GRA does not seek
recommendations regarding government policy. It seeks the development of research
which will assist its members formulate policy recommendations and to set policy in a
significant way. Key topics which are considered to be of most use to the GRA within
this topic:
1. Culturally appropriate interventions for CALD communities.
2. Gambling in refugee populations or in communities with refugee-like experiences.
3. Acculturation and gambling.
4. International students and gambling
5. The nature of gambling and associated risks across different CALD communities.

Cardiovascular Disease and Depression Strategic Research Program- Call for applications for funding commencing in 2009

The Heart Foundation and beyondblue: the national depression initiative are partnering to fund strategic research of up to $3.5M in the area of depression and cardiovascular disease. 

Applications for funding are invited from researchers who would like to pursue research in this area. The program will support quality research that is practical, with specific endpoints and clearly defined pathways to care

Grants of one to five years duration with a total funding value of $10,000 - $3,500,000 (exclusive of GST) are invited. Funding will be awarded based on relevance, project potential, merit/feasibility and track record. The Heart Foundation and beyondblue may fund a combination of large and small projects using the criteria of relevance and quality as crucial elements of the final funding decision(s).

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Research Foundation Inc (SA)- Outline Submission

Motor Neurone Disease Research Grants 2009

The Motor Neurone Disease Research Institute of Australia provided $480,000 for research relevant to MND in 2008.  It is hoped that even more than this will be available to support research projects in 2009.

Research Innovator Grants in Pancreatic Cancer 2009- The Cancer Council NSW

The Cancer Council NSW (TCCNSW) has developed a new granting scheme, known as Innovator Grants, to promote the development and sharing of innovative cancer research ideas, which address agreed research goals in pancreatic cancer.

Innovator Grants offer opportunities for researchers of any background that have a strong commitment to research, have demonstrated their potential to undertake high quality scientific research and have an ability to identify novel ways to answer pressing questions for improving patient outcomes.

The Cancer Council NSW seeks proposals from all areas of basic, clinical, public health practice, behavioural, and epidemiological research. Proposals should be for innovative and original research projects of high quality and potential.  The projects must be aligned to the research goals in pancreatic cancer that have been identified through one of The Cancer Council’s Strategic Research Partnerships

Wildlife Conservation Fund Grants- Department of Environment and Heritage

Internal Deadline

Wildlife Conservation Fund grants money annually for conservation and research projects concerned with South Australia’s biodiversity.

Projects should be capable of completion within one year, although continuing support may be available for projects of up to three years in duration where project brief and costings are supplied. Research institutions are encouraged to apply for supervised project funding at the Honours Degree, Masters Degree and PhD levels.

2008/2009 round of Native Vegetation Council Research Grants

The Native Vegetation Council manages the Native Vegetation Fund and has an annual program of grants to support research activities related to native vegetation conservation.  While the Council is willing to consider any research proposals that will enhance our knowledge regarding the conservation and management of native vegetation in South Australia, it assesses applications against the following criteria:

• outcomes that inform and assist in the development of native vegetation policy by the Council,
• outcomes leading to improved management of native vegetation and/or conservation status of species or communities,
• specific recommendations aimed at improving some aspect of habitat or biodiversity conservation in South Australia.

Please note: This program supports research.  Projects seeking on ground restoration works will not be funded through this program.

Research Funding 2008/09-Australian Antarctic Division

Marine mammals interact with humans in a diverse manner. In order to identify and effectively manage the interactions that might require some alteration to human activities the Australian Government requires an understanding of the status of the marine mammal species (population structure, distribution, abundance and trend), the nature and extent of the interaction and the options for, and likely effectiveness of, mitigation strategies.

In this third funding round the Australian Marine Mammal Centre (AMMC) seeks proposals that deliver the highest quality science outcomes to address the most pressing marine mammal management needs. Priority will be given to those proposals that address the three key needs.

General Research Grants - Criminology Research Council

The Criminology Research Council funds research grants to individuals or organisations wishing to undertake policy-relevant criminology research. The Council and encourages research that involves collaborative funding by other agencies and sources.

Applicants must provide a detailed list of all items for which support is being sought. Items should indicate the cost of GST as a separate item in the proposed budget. Please group each item according to the categories listed in the application form.

Premier's Science & Research Fund (PSRF) - Call for Proposals

The Fund Objectives and Guidelines for Applicants for Round 6 of the
PSRF funding scheme have been released and can be accessed at:

The PSRF application process involves two stages. Stage 1 comprises a
3-page 'Expression of Interest' and these are due by *Monday 11th August
2008* in Research Branch, together with a fully signed internal contribution certification page. Please note that the PSRF require significant co-contributions from host institutions and partner organisations, and  these contributions _must_ have appropriate approval. As in previous years, the PSRF will also consider requests for support for ARC Federation Fellowship applications.

Myeloma Cancer Stem Cell - Letter of Intent

The overall goal of this scheme is to utilize existing preclinical tools or develop new tools to identify and characterize cell populations displaying hallmark features of cancer stem cells, namely the ability to self-renew (clonogenic growth potential) and differentiate into MM plasma cells both in vitro and/or in vivo. In the course of the studies a better definition concerning the type of clonogenic cell being examined should emerge with respect to its ability to be called a “cancer stem” cell, “tumor initiating” cell or “tumor regenerating” cell.

The Pilot Grant program serves as seed funding to support efforts that reflect innovative approaches and techniques and aid in the development of necessary pilot data. Applications in the following areas are particularly encouraged
1. human investigation
2. research that takes advantage of existing or planned collections of patients or clinical materials
3. grants that seek to identify or characterize putative biomarkers
4. functional validation project that take advantage of previously published genome wide association studies to determine which candidate genes/variants have au authentic role in human lupus and

The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation (HFG)

The Clarke Medal is considered for award annually for distinguished work in a natural science done in Australia and its territories. This year's award is in the field of Botany in all aspects, and nominations are called for the names of suitable persons who have contributed significantly to the science of Botany.

The Council requests that every nomination should be accompanied by a list of publications, a full CV, and also by a statement clearly indicating which part of the nominee's work was done in Australia and which part was done overseas.

Agreement of the nominee to his/her nomination must be obtained by the nominator before the submission of the nomination and included in the submission.

Nominations and supporting material should be submitted to The Royal Society of NSW not later than 30th September 2008. One (1) hard copy of the nomination and supporting material should be mailed to the address below. Additionally, to facilitate distribution amongst the judging panel, an electronic copy of the nomination and key supporting material should be emailed to the email address below.

The winner will be announced and the Medal presented at the Annual Dinner of the Royal Society scheduled to be held in March 2009. The winner will be notified atleast two weeks beforehand.

The Edgeworth Medal is awarded to distinguished contributions by a young scientist. The conditions of the Award of the Medal are:
1. The recipient must be under the age of thirty-five years at 1st January, 2008;
2. The Award will be for work done mainly in Australia or its Territories; or, contributing to the advancement of Australian science.

Nominations are called for the names of suitable persons who have contributed significantly to science, including scientific aspects of agriculture, engineering, dentistry, medicine and veterinary science.

International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management (ICE WaRM)- International Visits & Exchanges Programme -Round 9

2009 Masterclass for Emerging Researchers in Ageing

The ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2009 Emerging Researchers in Ageing Masterclass to be held at the University of Queensland on the 05th and 06th February 2009. Confirmed PhD candidates whose research is in the field of ageing are invited to apply for a place in the class.

The two-day program will include sessions with leading academics in the field of ageing from Australia and overseas. Sessions will focus on practical and methodological considerations for PhD students conducting research into ageing, as well as career development options and pathways, how to fund your research, how to promote your research in the media and how to publish your research in the ageing literature. The second day will commence with a networking breakfast which will feature a panel discussion with senior policy makers and leading academics in the field. The Masterclass will culminate with presentations of collaborative projects to be developed by student groups across the two days. A prize will be awarded for the best presentation.

2009-10 Round of Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) Workshops - Call for proposals

The purpose of the Workshop Program is to advance knowledge through in-depth discussion, and to promote its application by the dissemination of workshop outcomes through publication. It is expected that the ideas and research discussed at the workshop will be rigorously debated and that they are open to scrutiny by scholars within the social sciences and others.
1. Numbers are limited to around 15 to 20 participants to allow for meaningful exchange of ideas and extensive in-depth debate.
2. The theme, quality and range of participants, and expected outcomes determine the Academy’s support which has a maximum of $7,500.
