Animal Ethics Course: The Use of Animals in Science - Ethical and Practical Considerations

To be held on Friday 9 March 2007 from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm in the National Wine Centre of Australia, Busby Hall, Corner of Botanic and Hackney Roads.

The Animal Ethics Committees of the University of Adelaide and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science will jointly conduct a one day training course for staff and honours/postgraduate students, including those at other institutions, on Friday 9 March, 2007. The course is particularly aimed at new users but is of interest and value to animal users generally. No fee is charged. Registration is necessary by 2 March. ARC Linkage International - Funding Commencing in 2008 - ELIGIBILITY EXEMPTIONS

The ARC provides funding under Linkage International for the movement of researchers between eligible Australia based research organisations and centres of research excellence overseas, and to foster collaboration and networking between Australia-based and overseas researchers.

The 'Linkage International Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2008' are now available from the Research Branch website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInt.html

ELIGIBILITY EXEMPTIONS - Eligibility Ruling Requests are due in Research Branch by 2 March 2007. The Funding Rules describe a number of situations where it is possible to submit an Eligibility Exemption Request or an Eligibility Ruling Request for the purposes of obtaining an exemption or ruling from the ARC regarding the eligibility of a proposed Proposal. All such requests must be submitted on the ARC Eligibility Exemption/Ruling Request Form and sent to Research Branch by 2 March 2007. The form is available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInt.html

Linkage International proposals submitted in 2007 (for funding commencing in 2008) include one round only of Awards, ARC International Fellowships and two Internationally Coordinated Initiatives.

2008 NHMRC Project round

Please note the internal closing date for 2008 Project applications is 26 Feb 2007. If you have requested an ID for a project, and do NOT intend to submit a full application, please advise raohealth@adelaide.edu.au .
One of the most common errors on applications has occurred at question 8.3 Direct Research Costs. Each year should be listed in $5000 quanta, as is clearly requested by NHMRC in their 'Instructions and advice to applicants'

Priority-Driven Collaborative Cancer Research Grants

Applications are now open for new Priority-Driven Collaborative Cancer Research Grants to commence in 2007. The Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme is inviting researchers working in Australia to apply for grants up to a maximum of $600,000 over three years with a maximum, in any one year, of $200,000. The Scheme is a new funding program to support collaborative priority-driven cancer research and foster Australian researchers to work collaboratively to generate evidence, increase knowledge, improve the translation of research into policy and practice in identified priority areas, reduce the impact of cancer on the community and improve outcomes for people affected by cancer. The scheme is a joint initiative of Cancer Australia, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, and the Diagnostics and Technology Branch of the Department of Health and Ageing.

NHMRC Special Call for Research into Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Special Call for Research into Complementary and Alternative Medicine is now open. This special call for research provides $5 million to fund the best innovative research into Complementary and Alternative Medicine that addresses needs or information gaps that are not already being covered through other means. The scope of this call encompasses research on a diverse group of health-related substances, therapies and disciplines that are not considered to be part of mainstream medical care in Australia. These include herbal medicine, vitamin and mineral supplements, nutritional supplements, traditional medical systems such as Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and homeopathic medicine. International Human Frontiers Science Program

Applications are now open for the international Human Frontier Science Program Research Grants (Young Investigator and Program Grants) to commence in 2008. Australia, through the NHMRC, became a member of this internationally renowned program in 2004. The Human Frontier Science Program supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. It supports international research teams. The Program has an interdisciplinary focus and research grants are offered to scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, engineering as well as biology to focus on the problems at the frontier of the life sciences. Applicants for research grants must first submit a letter of intent online. You must pre-register for a password by Tuesday 22 March 2007. The internal deadline for submission of the letter of intent is Tuesday 27 March 2007.

Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research

Nominations are now being called for the Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research, 2007, closing 5pm Friday, 30 March 2007 (apply direct). The Award is open to researchers who have completed their first PhD or MD within the last fifteen years. The annual Award, made in recognition of outstanding individual achievement in health and medical research in Australia, is now in its eighth year and consists of $50,000 and a presentation medal. Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation invites applications for funding in 2008

The Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation of South Australia (CRF) invites applications for research grants for the calendar year 2008. The Foundation supports health, educational or social research to encourage and advance investigation into the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of any condition that may affect the general health, education or wwelfare of children. Applications are sought from the fields of Medicine, Education, Dentistry, Nursing, Social Sciences, Environment, Mental Health and Allied Health Professions.

Grant applications must be undertaken via the Foundation's website (www.crf.org.au). The application process involves:
1. Creation of a secure user profile, including login and password details
2. Completion of the on-line Research Grant Registration form
3. Downloading, completion and emailing the Research Grant Application for 2008 form and any supplementary information to the Research Branch at raohealth@adelaide.edu.au

2007 NHMRC Deeds of Agreement

The NHMRC Deed of Agreement for Research Funding Schemes (version 4) and The NHMRC Deed of Agreement for Researcher Support (version 5) have now
been fully executed by the University of Adelaide and the NHMRC. We advise researchers receiving funding from the NHMRC to become familiar with the Deed of Agreement pertaining to their award, particularly regarding progress and final reporting requirements. The University of Adelaide has also requested the following additions:
1. Due to University research facilities being dispersed over various sites, the security warranty in clause 2.3 is provided to the 'best of our knowledge'
2. The NHMRC agrees to provide a 3 month period of notice concerning any significant changes to the Deed, and gives the opportunity to withdraw without penalty of changes are not acceptable.

CORRECTION: 2007 NHMRC PROJECT GRANT APPLICATIONS -Nomination of Preferred Assessor.

The NHMRC have noted that there is a possibility that some applicants could misunderstand the way in which external assessors may be selected to assist
the peer review of applications. The NHMRC have provided the following clarification: When providing advice to Grant Review Panel (GRP) members and spokespersons, the following clause will be deleted from the Peer Review Guidelines:

"Where possible, and only if appropriate to the application, the applicant's nominated assessor should be used"; (Refer: NHMRC Peer Review Guidelines
for funding commencing in 2008. Appendix B - Nominating Assessors; p.24).

While applicants are permitted to nominate a preferred assessor when submitting their grant application, there should be no expectation that the nominee will be
approached to provide an assessment. Every effort will be made to ensure that all potential conflicts of interest are addressed at all stages of the peer review process. It should be noted that for the 2007 round of Project Grants, external assessors will be asked to provide their assessment of the scientific content of the application only. (Refer: NHMRC Project Grants Funding Policy for funding commencing in 2008. Section 2; Policy Changes; p3). Assessors will not be asked to provide a category rating for the application. All decisions on the ranking of applications will be made by the relevant GRP.

Heart Foundation Strategic Research Program

In 2007, the Heart Foundation will launch a Strategic Research Program for funding research in priority areas defined by the Heart Foundation’s work in the area of cardiovascular health. This program will add to our current investigator initiated projects to provide additional funding for valuable research which will help the Heart Foundation to better address the burden of cardiovascular disease in Australia.

The Strategic Research Framework provides an overview of how this funding program will function. The first priority area for the Strategic Research Program will be Depression and Heart Disease. We are hoping to host a forum for researchers with an interest in these areas in March or April 2007. This will be followed by a Request for Proposals, with funding to commence in late 2007 or early 2008. If you would like to be contacted as further information about our Strategic Research Program becomes available, please email the Research Team.

Department of Education, Science and Training funding – CHINA

Applications are now being sought by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) for the next round of International Science Linkages (ISL) Australia-China Special Fund for Scientific and Technological Cooperation. The Australia-China Special Fund provides support for excellent, researcher-initiated, international Science & Training cooperation activities between Australian and Chinese researchers, which meet the objectives of the ISL programme. Successful NHMRC Project Grants for 2007 Funding

Please note that funding will not commence for successful project grants until the following have been received:
a) all relevant ethics clearances;
b) two intialled copies of the schedules;
c) signed University acceptance.

To accept the project funding, the Research Branch must forward these items to the NHMRC before 31 March 2007.

ARC Discovery Projects - Costing Personnel in Budget

The ARC have provided the following clarification regarding costing personnel in the budget:

Page 35 of the Discovery Projects Instructions to Applicants for funding commencing in 2008 provides details on how to complete the application form relating to Part C - Project Costs - Direct Costs - Personnel. The Instructions currently state: "Do not build increments into the amounts requested. Project payments to the Administering Organisation will be automatically indexed at the time of payment for each year of the Project".

The increments referred to are the annual pay rises arising from enterprise agreements. Organisations may still include salary increases to match anticipated normal progress through salary increments within a classification level based on current pay scales.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) visit in May

Dr Antonio Scarpa, Director of the Centre for Scientific Review, which is the portal for NIH grant applications and their review, will be visiting the University on the 14 and 15 May 2007.

Dr Scarpa will present an information session on grant opportunities and the NIH process as well as visiting relevant areas of the University.

His visit will provide an excellent opportunity for researchers and administrators to find out about grant opportunities with the NIH as well as an insight into NIH processes.

The visit is being coordinated by Dr Don McMaster at the Research Branch and further information about the visit will be distributed closer to the date. Be sure to put this date in your calendar.

Linkage Projects - For Funding Commencing in 2008

Linkage-Projects aims to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide opportunities for Postdoctoral and Postgraduate researchers to pursue high quality research collaboration with external organisations.

Prizes

2007 Balzan Prizes in the Scientific and Humanistic Fields

The International E. Balzan Prize Foundation – “Prize” has the aim of fostering culture, the sciences and the most meritorious humanitarian initiatives of peace and brotherhood among peoples, regardless of nationality, race or creed. It meets these goals by assigning four annual awards in the following categories: 1) literature, the moral sciences and the arts; 2) the physical, mathematical and natural sciences and medicine. The amount of each prize is currently 1,000,000 Swiss francs; half of the prize must be destined by the prize-winner for research work, preferably involving young scholars. Brain Foundation (SA) - Elizabeth Penforld Simpson Prize

The Brain Foundation (SA) is offering a prize of $20,000 for the best original research work in any of the basic or clinical neurosciences (neuroanatomy,
neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropathology, neurology, neruosurgery, neuropsychology, etc.) carried out wholly or chiefly in South Australia during the period
1 January 2005 - 31 December 2006.

Conditions:
1. The donor of the prize wishes to encourage younger research workers so that candidates for the award should have been no older than 40 years at the
time of completion of thesubmitted work, however, under exceptional circumstances (eg. late entry into a research career), an older person will be
considered.

2. The application should give the candidate's full name, date of birth, address for correspondence and professional qualifications.

3. Candidates for the award should be nominated by a senior neuroscientist or clinician, who should state to what extent the work represents the original
work of the candidate. The nominator should also give reasons for considering the research work to be meritorious. Alternatively, a candidate may
nominate him/herslef, in which case the candidate should submit evidence from an independent colleague for the place and originality of work.

4. Nominations should be accompanied by three copies of published, in press or submitted research reports.

5. Applications close on Friday 27 April 2007, and should be addressed to: Executive Officer, Brain Foundation (SA), PO Box 125, Unley Business Centre SA 5061.

Presented annually by the Australian Museum, the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes reward excellence in the fields of scientific research & innovation, science leadership, school science and science journalism & communication. 2007 Prime Minister's Prize for Science: Nominations and Renominations Now Open

Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) are seeking nominations to the 2007 Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, Australia's most prestigious
science and science teaching awards. The Prizes are awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to science and science teaching and who are
currently active in research or teaching. Nominations close at 5.00pm AEST, Friday 27 April 2007. Information on Nomination Guidelines and the online nomination process are available on the Science Prizes website at: www.dest.gov.au/scienceprize

Pursuant to the 2007 Nominations Guidelines, nominees who were previously nominated for one of the Science Prizes are eligible for reconsideration in 2007 by the
Committee, subject to Eligibility Criteria being met and to the agreement of nominators and nominees. To encourage and facilitate your renomination, DEST have a function in their Online Nomination System that allows information previously submitted (including materials uploaded) to be migrated to create a new nomination for 2007. All nomination details and documents submitted will be repopulated to create a new 2007 nomination. You will be able to review, update and provide further evidence of relevant achievements of the person being re-nominated.

For 30 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have provided financial support for exceptional individuals with groundbreaking projects that:
-expand our knowledge of the world;
-improve quality of life on the planet or
-enhance the human condition.

The awards are presented in every two years in five areas: Science and Medicine, Technology and Innovation, Exploration and Discovery, The Environment and Cultural Heritage. However a project may be submitted in almost any field of endeavour. Projects must be innovative, feasible and demonstrate a spirit of enterprise.
