The Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has cancelled the information session that was to be held on Tuesday 13 March 2007 regarding the amended Gene Technology Regulations. NHMRC Project Grant Applications Now Due At Research Branch

Internal closing date was 26 February 2007.

This is a friendly reminder to applicants who have had an NHMRC ID number issued for Project Grants for funding in 2008. If you no longer intend to lodge your application then please advise the branch by email to raohealth@adelaide.edu.au

If you have not already sumbitted your application please be advised Research Branch will be closed on Monday 12 March due to a Public Holiday. Applications submitted on or before Friday 9 March 2007 will receive compliance checking prior to submission.

US Department of Defence Funding Opportunity

The following funding opportunity information may interest bio-life scientists, therapeutic pharmacology, medical-oncology, paediatric, neurology, and clinical researchers of the University of Adelaide. The DoD Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) has received US$10 million for fiscal year 2007. On February 28, 2007 the NFRP released three Program Announcements describing funding mechanisms for 2007. All details for application are available in the Program Announcement for each funding mechanism located on the Grants.Gov web site http://www.grants.gov/ and the CDMRP website: http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/nfrp.htm .

DoD Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP): The overall goal of the FY07 NFRP is to develop effective therapies for NF1, NF2, and hwannomatosis. The Fiscal Year 2007 (FY07) NFRP encourages proposals that specifically address critical needs of the NF community in the following areas:

• Translational research such as the development or preclinical testing of therapeutic agents for the treatment of Neurofibromatosis.
• Complications of neurofibromatosis with high mortality such as childhood neoplasms, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and cerebrovascular abnormalities.
• Complications of neurofibromatosis with high morbidity such as skeletal maladies, learning deficits, hormone-associated effects, and pain.
• Refinement and standardization of imaging techniques for use in future clinical trials.

Grants.Gov Proposal Submission Tip: Submission of a proposal requires institutional registration with the Central Contractor Registry (CCR), which requires a Data Universal Number System (DUNS) number, Tax Identification Number (TIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN), and a Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) code and must be completed well in advance of Grants.gov registration and proposal submission. Please note that CCR registrations have expirations. Plan accordingly and allow several weeks for these registration processes. Grants.gov will not allow proposals to be submitted unless all of the registration steps have been completed.

Group of Eight Fellowships for Early Career Researchers in Europe.

The Go8 has announced the establishment of four annual Fellowships for ECRs from Europe to work within Go8 universities. In 2007 the Fellowships are open to eligible researchers from Hungary and Poland. Applications close on 23 March 2007. In 2008 the $20,000 Fellowships will be available to eligible researchers from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech republic, Slovania, Romania and Bulgaria.

The targeted research themes for the Fellowship are:

* Sustainable Environmental Practices, Resource Management and Human Ecology
* Health and Welfare
* Innovative Technologies
* Human, Digital and Bio-Security
* Language/Cultural Studies
* Biotechnology/Biomedicine
* International Trade

An ECR opportunity: JSPS-UNU Posdoctoral Fellowship Programme 2007

The JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme was launched in 2002, and is jointly organised by United Nations University (UNU) and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). It is designed to provide opportunities for promising, highly qualified, young researchers to conduct cooperative research under the leadership of their host researchers of Japanese universities and research institutions especially in the fields relevant to the main thematic focus of UNU-IAS,
located in Yokohama, and UNU Centre, located in Tokyo.

All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, particularly those related to the main thematic focus of UNU’s programme activities with emphasis on policy issues. Research proposals should relate clearly to one of the current research areas of UNU-IAS and UNU Centre (see UNU-IAS, UNU Centre/Peace and Governance and UNU Centre/Environment and Sustainable Development websites):

Eligibility:
Citizens of UN member countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan. (Japanese nationals that do not have citizenship or permanent residency of foreign countries are not eligible.) Holders of a doctoral degree when the Fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within six years prior to 2 April 2007.
Those who have research experience (at least 10 months) after receiving their doctoral degree are encouraged to apply. JSPS and UNU cannot accept nominations for persons who have in the past been awarded either a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship or STA (Japan Science and Technology Corporation) Fellowship (Long-term) for a term of 12 months or more.

Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 to 24 months and include

* A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations)
* A monthly maintenance allowance of 392,000 yen
* A settling-in allowance of 200,000 yen (based on JSPS regulations)
* An annual domestic research travel allowance of 58,500 yen
* Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage

Internal closing date: 12 April 2007 for Fellowships beginning on 1 November 2007.

Baby News

Research Branch wishes to advise that Kathyn Hudson has now commenced an extended period of Maternity Leave. Although before the expected due date Kathryn and baby son are both well.

2007 NHMRC Deeds of Agreement

The NHMRC Deed of Agreement for Research Funding Schemes (version 4) and The NHMRC Deed of Agreement for Researcher Support (version 5) have now
been fully executed by the University of Adelaide and the NHMRC. We advise researchers receiving funding from the NHMRC to become familiar with the Deed of Agreement pertaining to their award, particularly regarding progress and final reporting requirements. The University of Adelaide has also requested the following additions:
1. Due to University research facilities being dispersed over various sites, the security warranty in clause 2.3 is provided to the 'best of our knowledge'
2. The NHMRC agrees to provide a 3 month period of notice concerning any significant changes to the Deed, and gives the opportunity to withdraw without penalty of changes are not acceptable.

ARC Linkage Infrastructure Equipment & Facilities (LIEF)

Funding Rules and information for the 2007 Round of LIEF (Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment & Facilities) Submissions for funding in 2008 are now available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInfra.html. Please ensure you note the following: the University timetable for significant dates in the application process at
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/docs/ARC_LIEF_timeframe_2007.rtf and changes from the previous Funding Rules, as detailed in section 2 (pp 14-16) of the new Funding Rules. A reminder email will be sent regarding Expressions of Interest and when ARC Instructions to Applicants becomes available.

NHMRC Complementary Medicines Strategic Awards

This special call for research provides $5 million to fund the best innovative research into Complementary and Alternative Medicine that addresses needs or information gaps that are not already being covered through other means. The scope of this call encompasses research on a diverse group of health-related substances, therapies and disciplines that are not considered to be part of mainstream medical care in Australia. These include herbal medicine, vitamin and mineral supplements, nutritional supplements, traditional medical systems such as Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and homeopathic medicine. 2 hard copies + electronic of the application are due in Research Branch by 23 March 2007. Successful NHMRC Project Grants for 2007 Funding

Please note that funding will not commence for successful project grants until the following have been received:
a) all relevant ethics clearances;
b) two intialled copies of the schedules;
c) signed University acceptance.

To accept the project funding, the Research Branch must forward these items to the NHMRC before 31 March 2007.

Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development

The Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2008 is now available on the ARC Web Site - http://www.arc.gov.au/. Also available is the sample application form and the Eligibility Exemption/Ruling Request form. Closing date for submission
of IRD Proposals is Friday 4 May 2007. Closing date for eligibility Exemption/Ruling requests is Friday 6 April 2007. Internal closing date is Tuesday 10 April 2007. If you have any questions please contact Dr Don McMaster on 8303 3347 or email don.mcmaster@adelaide.edu.au

National Institutes of Health (NIH) visit in May

Dr Antonio Scarpa, Director of the Centre for Scientific Review, which is the portal for NIH grant applications and their review, will be visiting the University on the 14 and 15 May 2007.

Dr Scarpa will present an information session on grant opportunities and the NIH process as well as visiting relevant areas of the University.

His visit will provide an excellent opportunity for researchers and administrators to find out about grant opportunities with the NIH as well as an insight into NIH processes.

The visit is being coordinated by Dr Don McMaster at the Research Branch and further information about the visit will be distributed closer to the date. Be sure to put this date in your calendar.

ARC Linkage International - Funding Commencing in 2008 - ELIGIBILITY EXEMPTIONS

The ARC provides funding under Linkage International for the movement of researchers between eligible Australia based research organisations and centres of research excellence overseas, and to foster collaboration and networking between Australia-based and overseas researchers.

The 'Linkage International Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2008' are now available from the Research Branch website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInt.html

ELIGIBILITY EXEMPTIONS - Eligibility Ruling Requests are due in Research Branch by 2 March 2007. The Funding Rules describe a number of situations where it is possible to submit an Eligibility Exemption Request or an Eligibility Ruling Request for the purposes of obtaining an exemption or ruling from the ARC regarding the eligibility of a proposed Proposal. All such requests must be submitted on the ARC Eligibility Exemption/Ruling Request Form and sent to Research Branch by 2 March 2007. The form is available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInt.html

Linkage International proposals submitted in 2007 (for funding commencing in 2008) include one round only of Awards, ARC International Fellowships and two Internationally Coordinated Initiatives.

Linkage Projects - For Funding Commencing in 2008

Linkage-Projects aims to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide opportunities for Postdoctoral and Postgraduate researchers to pursue high quality research collaboration with external organisations.

The 'Linkage Projects Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2008' are now available from the Research branch website
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkProj.html. Linkage Projects proposals submitted in 2007 (for funding commencing in 2008) are due for submission at the following internal closing dates:

Round 1 - Friday 13 April 2007; and
Round 2 - Friday 2 November 2007

The main changes to the Linkage Projects Funding Rules from the previous year (proposals submitted in 2006) are summarised at Section 2 of the rules. We will provide further notification advising when Application Forms and other relevant documentation become available.


Prizes

2007 Balzan Prizes in the Scientific and Humanistic Fields

The International E. Balzan Prize Foundation – “Prize” has the aim of fostering culture, the sciences and the most meritorious humanitarian initiatives of peace and brotherhood among peoples, regardless of nationality, race or creed. It meets these goals by assigning four annual awards in the following categories: 1) literature, the moral sciences and the arts; 2) the physical, mathematical and natural sciences and medicine. The amount of each prize is currently 1,000,000 Swiss francs; half of the prize must be destined by the prize-winner for research work, preferably involving young scholars. Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research

Nominations are now being called for the Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research, 2007, closing 5pm Friday, 30 March 2007 (apply direct). The Award is open to researchers who have completed their first PhD or MD within the last fifteen years. The annual Award, made in recognition of outstanding individual achievement in health and medical research in Australia, is now in its eighth year and consists of $50,000 and a presentation medal. Brain Foundation (SA) - Elizabeth Penforld Simpson Prize

The Brain Foundation (SA) is offering a prize of $20,000 for the best original research work in any of the basic or clinical neurosciences (neuroanatomy,
neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropathology, neurology, neruosurgery, neuropsychology, etc.) carried out wholly or chiefly in South Australia during the period
1 January 2005 - 31 December 2006.

Conditions:
1. The donor of the prize wishes to encourage younger research workers so that candidates for the award should have been no older than 40 years at the
time of completion of thesubmitted work, however, under exceptional circumstances (eg. late entry into a research career), an older person will be
considered.

2. The application should give the candidate's full name, date of birth, address for correspondence and professional qualifications.

3. Candidates for the award should be nominated by a senior neuroscientist or clinician, who should state to what extent the work represents the original
work of the candidate. The nominator should also give reasons for considering the research work to be meritorious. Alternatively, a candidate may
nominate him/herslef, in which case the candidate should submit evidence from an independent colleague for the place and originality of work.

4. Nominations should be accompanied by three copies of published, in press or submitted research reports.

5. Applications close on Friday 27 April 2007, and should be addressed to: Executive Officer, Brain Foundation (SA), PO Box 125, Unley Business Centre SA 5061.

2007 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Now Open

Presented annually by the Australian Museum, the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes reward excellence in the fields of scientific research & innovation, science leadership, school science and science journalism & communication. 2007 Prime Minister's Prize for Science: Nominations and Renominations Now Open

Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) are seeking nominations to the 2007 Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, Australia's most prestigious
science and science teaching awards. The Prizes are awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to science and science teaching and who are
currently active in research or teaching. Nominations close at 5.00pm AEST, Friday 27 April 2007. Information on Nomination Guidelines and the online nomination process are available on the Science Prizes website at: www.dest.gov.au/scienceprize

Pursuant to the 2007 Nominations Guidelines, nominees who were previously nominated for one of the Science Prizes are eligible for reconsideration in 2007 by the
Committee, subject to Eligibility Criteria being met and to the agreement of nominators and nominees. To encourage and facilitate your renomination, DEST have a function in their Online Nomination System that allows information previously submitted (including materials uploaded) to be migrated to create a new nomination for 2007. All nomination details and documents submitted will be repopulated to create a new 2007 nomination. You will be able to review, update and provide further evidence of relevant achievements of the person being re-nominated.

Rolex Awards for Enterprise

For 30 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have provided financial support for exceptional individuals with groundbreaking projects that:
-expand our knowledge of the world;
-improve quality of life on the planet or
-enhance the human condition.

The awards are presented in every two years in five areas: Science and Medicine, Technology and Innovation, Exploration and Discovery, The Environment and Cultural Heritage. However a project may be submitted in almost any field of endeavour. Projects must be innovative, feasible and demonstrate a spirit of enterprise. 2007 Frederick Watson Fellowship - $15,000

Have you already made your mark as a scholar? Are you interested in furthering your already substantial scholarly career using the collections at the National Archives of Australia? If so, you should consider applying for the Frederick Watson Fellowship. The fellowship provides a range of benefits for researchers that extend well beyond financial support. Applicants may be authors, academics, senior public servants, former politicians or scholars and should have either a postgraduate degree or a demonstrated record of published work. 2007 Margaret George Award - $10,000

Are you beginning a brilliant career? The Margaret George Award is for those who are establishing a Professorile in their chosen field of research and are interested in conducting further research at the National Archives. Applicants should have a demonstrable record of achievement and the potential to excel further. They could be emergent historians, independent researchers or journalists with a talent for research. Historical research into the collection is not limited to paper documents. It can include photos, posters, maps, architectural drawings, films, plays, musical scores and sound recordings.Closing date is Friday, 29 June 2007 (apply direct).
