DEST Collection of 2006 Publications - Reminder

We would appreciate it if all schools and disciplines could send 2006 publications to Research Branch by the internal closing date of Friday 30th March 2007. If you anticipate any late submissions could you please inform us as soon as possible. Please note that due to the implementation of the RQF it is now mandatory for authors to supply Research Fields, Courses and Disciplines (RFCD) and Socio Economic Objective (SEO) codes for all publications. See the Research Classification Codes page to obtain the appropriate codes. The new proformas for the 2006 collection are available on our website at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/pub/

Could you please let us know if there have been any changes of coordinators in your area so that we can update our records.

NHMRC Progress Reports

This is to advise you that a revised NHMRC progress report form is now available at :

This form is to be used for the following grant types:

Project Grants
Development Grants
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Special Program Grants
Program Grants
Program in Medical Genomics Grants
Strategic Awards

In accordance with the NHMRC Deed of Agreement, progress reports must be submitted to the NHMRC by 31 March following each calendar year in which there were payments or carry forward of funds, except in the final year when the Final Report form must be used.

Where possible please ensure that the revised progress report form is used. However as many researchers may have already commenced a progress report using the previous version of the form, the NHMRC will continue to accept this format for an interim period.

Please forward the electronic version of the progress report to raohealth@adelaide.edu.au and send one signed hard copy to Chelsea Mudge at the Research Branch (Level 7, 115 Grenfell Street, Adelaide, 5005).
Please note the report must be signed by both the first named Chief Investigator and the appropriate Head of School.

Australian Institute Nuclear Science & Engineering, Postdoctoral Research Fellowships - Now Open

Applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are currently open. Fellowships are offered at academic level B for outstanding and enthusiastic scientists to undertake research in areas of science and technology, using the OPAL reactor. Two research directions have been highlighted by AINSE this year, in calling for applications for Research Fellowships. Animal Ethics online application form downtime

The next deadline for submission of University of Adelaide Animal Ethics Committee applications is 5pm on Monday 16 April. Major information technology upgrades will take place University-wide that weekend immediately prior to and on that date. THE ANIMAL ETHICS ONLINE APPLICATION FORM WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE during the major systems upgrade period from 6pm on Friday 13th until 5pm Tuesday 17th April.

This is to advise that any activity in drafting and submitting the webform for the next round must take place before the system closes on Friday afternoon the 13th April if the deadline is to be met.

Please note that the deadline for desktop login password synchronisation coincides with this upgrade. Information Technology Services have advised all staff that syncronising passwords as soon as possible will ensure minimal impact on access to services. This includes access to the online animal ethics application form.

2007 Dementia Grants Program

Alzheimer's Australia Research (AAR) would like to announce the 2007 Dementia Grants Program. This year, AAR is happy to be able to offer a larger range of grants than in previous years. In 2007, AAR will be offering the following grants and scholarships:
New Researcher Grants:

* 5 AAR Dementia Research Grants of $20,000
* Janssen Cilag Research Grant of $20,000
* 2 Hazel Hawke Research Grant in Dementia Care of $20,000

Travel Grants:

* Rosemary Foundation Travel Project Grant of $10,000
* Rosemary Foundation Travel Stipend Grant of $5,000
* AAR Travel Stipend Grant of $5,000

Postgraduate Scholarships:

* Hunter Postgraduate Research Scholarship into the Causes of Alzheimer's Disease ($23,000 per year for 3 years)
* 2 AAR Postgraduate Research Scholarships in Social Research and Dementia ($23,000 per year for 3 years)

US Department of Defence Cancer Funding Opportunities

1. Breast Cancer Funding Opportunity. The following funding opportunity information may interest bio-life scientists, oncologists, and clinical researchers investigating breast cancer at the University of Adelaide. Some of the awards are specifically designed for a broad spectrum of investigators in the fields of social sciences, public health policy, economics, etc., to focus their research on breast cancer research.

The Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program received US$127.5million in Congressional appropriations for 2007. There will be a total of nine (9) Program announcements. This notification describes the seven Program Announcements now ready to accept submissions for required Pre-applications (such as Nominations, Letter of Intent, etc.) (http://cdmrp.army.mil).

2. The Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program received $80 million in Congressional appropriations for 2007. There will be a total of 8 Program announcements. This notification describes the first Program Announcements now ready to accept submissions for required Letters of Intent (http://cdmrp.army.mil). Seven additional PCRP Program Announcements will be released in March 2007. All details for application are available in the Program Announcement located on the CDMRP website: http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/pcrp.htm .

3. Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program Announces $3 million for Concept Awards: The DoD Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) has released $3 million in funding opportunities in Concept Awards on March 21, 2007. This will be a two step submission process: Step One) The pre-application for the Concept Award mechanism is a Letter of Intent (LOI). The LOI must be submitted electronically through the CDMRP eReceipt System at=20 https://cdmrp.org . Step two) Proposals must be submitted electronically by the Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) through Grants.gov www.grants.gov . All details for application are available in the Program Announcement located on the CDMRP website: http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/ocrp.htm .

The Cooperative Research Centre Association's 12th Annual Conference

'Driving Innovation Through Cooperative Research' 16-18 May 2007, Perth

The CRC Association extends an open invitation for interested parties to join representatives from 57 CRCs throughout Australia at this conference to critically evaluate how successful scientific research and development innovation can happen through cooperative research, both in Australia and abroad.

Over three days, a selection of highly-regarded Australian and international speakers will provide valuable global perspectives on innovation and the research and development process, tackling such issues as innovation policy and planning, and entrepreneurship. The programme will provide delegates with useful knowledge that can be implemented in public and private sectors.

Applying for NHMRC Funding for 2008

ARC Linkage Infrastructure Equipment & Facilities (LIEF)

Funding Rules and information for the 2007 Round of LIEF (Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment & Facilities) Submissions for funding in 2008 are now available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInfra.html. Please ensure you note the following: the University timetable for significant dates in the application process at
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/docs/ARC_LIEF_timeframe_2007.rtf and changes from the previous Funding Rules, as detailed in section 2 (pp 14-16) of the new Funding Rules. A reminder email will be sent regarding Expressions of Interest and when ARC Instructions to Applicants becomes available.

Successful NHMRC Project Grants for 2007 Funding

Please note that funding will not commence for successful project grants until the following have been received:
a) all relevant ethics clearances;
b) two intialled copies of the schedules;
c) signed University acceptance.

To accept the project funding, the Research Branch must forward these items to the NHMRC before 31 March 2007.

NHMRC Career Development Awards

Career Development Awards are available to researchers in the early stages of their careers. They aim to develop their capacity for original independent research; develop their research leadership skills; and help them to establish themselves as independent self-directed health and medical researchers in a research program or as part of a research team.

Applications Open for Funding for 2008 Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development

Application Forms are now available in GAMS (https://gams.arc.gov.au/) for the 2008 Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development. The internal closing date for proposals is Friday 13 April 2007. All applications are to be sent to Research Branch, Dr Don McMaster: don.mcmaster@adelaide.edu.au

Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation Grants

Eligible applications must be related to the fields of Medicine, Education, Dentistry, Nursing, Social Sciences, Environment, Mental Health and Allied Health Professions. Funds will be allocated solely to applicants for research undertaken in South Australia or the Northern Territory. Further information can be obtained from the website http://www.crf.org.au

All applications for Channel 7 Children's Research Foundation Grants are due in Research Branch by Thursday 26 April 2007.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) visit in May

Dr Antonio Scarpa, Director of the Centre for Scientific Review, which is the portal for NIH grant applications and their review, will be visiting the University on the 14 and 15 May 2007.

Dr Scarpa will present an information session on grant opportunities and the NIH process as well as visiting relevant areas of the University.

His visit will provide an excellent opportunity for researchers and administrators to find out about grant opportunities with the NIH as well as an insight into NIH processes.

The visit is being coordinated by Dr Don McMaster at the Research Branch and further information about the visit will be distributed closer to the date. Be sure to put this date in your calendar.

ARC Linkage International - Funding Commencing in 2008 - ELIGIBILITY EXEMPTIONS

The ARC provides funding under Linkage International for the movement of researchers between eligible Australia based research organisations and centres of research excellence overseas, and to foster collaboration and networking between Australia-based and overseas researchers.

The 'Linkage International Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2008' are now available from the Research Branch website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInt.html

ELIGIBILITY EXEMPTIONS - Eligibility Ruling Requests are due in Research Branch by 2 March 2007. The Funding Rules describe a number of situations where it is possible to submit an Eligibility Exemption Request or an Eligibility Ruling Request for the purposes of obtaining an exemption or ruling from the ARC regarding the eligibility of a proposed Proposal. All such requests must be submitted on the ARC Eligibility Exemption/Ruling Request Form and sent to Research Branch by 2 March 2007. The form is available at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkInt.html

Linkage International proposals submitted in 2007 (for funding commencing in 2008) include one round only of Awards, ARC International Fellowships and two Internationally Coordinated Initiatives.

Linkage Projects - For Funding Commencing in 2008

Linkage-Projects aims to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide opportunities for Postdoctoral and Postgraduate researchers to pursue high quality research collaboration with external organisations.

The 'Linkage Projects Funding Rules for funding commencing in 2008' are now available from the Research branch website
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/arc/LinkProj.html. Linkage Projects proposals submitted in 2007 (for funding commencing in 2008) are due for submission at the following internal closing dates:

Round 1 - Friday 13 April 2007; and
Round 2 - Friday 2 November 2007

The main changes to the Linkage Projects Funding Rules from the previous year (proposals submitted in 2006) are summarised at Section 2 of the rules. We will provide further notification advising when Application Forms and other relevant documentation become available.


Prizes

Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research

Nominations are now being called for the Commonwealth Health Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research, 2007, closing 5pm Friday, 30 March 2007 (apply direct). The Award is open to researchers who have completed their first PhD or MD within the last fifteen years. The annual Award, made in recognition of outstanding individual achievement in health and medical research in Australia, is now in its eighth year and consists of $50,000 and a presentation medal. Brain Foundation (SA) - Elizabeth Penforld Simpson Prize

The Brain Foundation (SA) is offering a prize of $20,000 for the best original research work in any of the basic or clinical neurosciences (neuroanatomy,
neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropathology, neurology, neruosurgery, neuropsychology, etc.) carried out wholly or chiefly in South Australia during the period
1 January 2005 - 31 December 2006.

Conditions:
1. The donor of the prize wishes to encourage younger research workers so that candidates for the award should have been no older than 40 years at the
time of completion of thesubmitted work, however, under exceptional circumstances (eg. late entry into a research career), an older person will be
considered.

2. The application should give the candidate's full name, date of birth, address for correspondence and professional qualifications.

3. Candidates for the award should be nominated by a senior neuroscientist or clinician, who should state to what extent the work represents the original
work of the candidate. The nominator should also give reasons for considering the research work to be meritorious. Alternatively, a candidate may
nominate him/herslef, in which case the candidate should submit evidence from an independent colleague for the place and originality of work.

4. Nominations should be accompanied by three copies of published, in press or submitted research reports.

5. Applications close on Friday 27 April 2007, and should be addressed to: Executive Officer, Brain Foundation (SA), PO Box 125, Unley Business Centre SA 5061.

2007 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Now Open

Presented annually by the Australian Museum, the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes reward excellence in the fields of scientific research & innovation, science leadership, school science and science journalism & communication. 2007 Prime Minister's Prize for Science: Nominations and Renominations Now Open

Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) are seeking nominations to the 2007 Prime Minister's Prizes for Science, Australia's most prestigious
science and science teaching awards. The Prizes are awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to science and science teaching and who are
currently active in research or teaching. Nominations close at 5.00pm AEST, Friday 27 April 2007. Information on Nomination Guidelines and the online nomination process are available on the Science Prizes website at: www.dest.gov.au/scienceprize

Pursuant to the 2007 Nominations Guidelines, nominees who were previously nominated for one of the Science Prizes are eligible for reconsideration in 2007 by the
Committee, subject to Eligibility Criteria being met and to the agreement of nominators and nominees. To encourage and facilitate your renomination, DEST have a function in their Online Nomination System that allows information previously submitted (including materials uploaded) to be migrated to create a new nomination for 2007. All nomination details and documents submitted will be repopulated to create a new 2007 nomination. You will be able to review, update and provide further evidence of relevant achievements of the person being re-nominated.

Rolex Awards for Enterprise

For 30 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have provided financial support for exceptional individuals with groundbreaking projects that:
-expand our knowledge of the world;
-improve quality of life on the planet or
-enhance the human condition.

The awards are presented in every two years in five areas: Science and Medicine, Technology and Innovation, Exploration and Discovery, The Environment and Cultural Heritage. However a project may be submitted in almost any field of endeavour. Projects must be innovative, feasible and demonstrate a spirit of enterprise. 2007 Frederick Watson Fellowship - $15,000

Have you already made your mark as a scholar? Are you interested in furthering your already substantial scholarly career using the collections at the National Archives of Australia? If so, you should consider applying for the Frederick Watson Fellowship. The fellowship provides a range of benefits for researchers that extend well beyond financial support. Applicants may be authors, academics, senior public servants, former politicians or scholars and should have either a postgraduate degree or a demonstrated record of published work. 2007 Margaret George Award - $10,000

Are you beginning a brilliant career? The Margaret George Award is for those who are establishing a Professorile in their chosen field of research and are interested in conducting further research at the National Archives. Applicants should have a demonstrable record of achievement and the potential to excel further. They could be emergent historians, independent researchers or journalists with a talent for research. Historical research into the collection is not limited to paper documents. It can include photos, posters, maps, architectural drawings, films, plays, musical scores and sound recordings.Closing date is Friday, 29 June 2007 (apply direct).
