2006 NHMRC Equipment round is now open
The 2006 NHMRC equipment grant round is now open. Applications are invited from teams seeking funds to purchase equipment to be used in health and medical research, as supported by NHMRC and other competitive grant support.

DEST Collection of 2006 Publications
The Research Branch is continuing to encourage Schools and other units to make the annual collection of research publications for submission to DEST an ongoing process through the year. It it would be appreciated if Schools and Disciplines that have not already begun collecting 2006 publications could begin as soon as possible with a view to sending batches to the Branch progressively until the deadline 31 March, 2007. The Research Branch will be glad to receive batches at any time. Please note, due to the implementation of the Research Quality Framework it is now mandatory to collect Research Fields, Courses and Disciplines (RFCD) and Socio Economic Objective (SEO) codes for all publications (codes can be obtained at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/funding/codes.html). National Heart Foundation Schemes
The National Heart Foundation of Australia is offering funding to pursue the research of cardiovascular disease and related disorders. The work must be in the areas of Biomedical, Clinical, or Public Health research. The Heart Foundation is now calling for applications for funding beginning 2008 in the following categories:
Research Grants-In-Aid
Applications are invited for financial support for research in the study of
cardiovascular disease and related disorders. The work may be pursued as an
investigation in BIOMEDICAL, CLINICAL OR PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH. Grants -in-aid
of up to two years' duration will be awarded, with a maximum funding value of
$63,000 per year. Applications are due in Research Branch 19 March 2007.
Research Fellowships
Fellowships of the following durations will be awarded:
- Postdoctoral Fellowships of up to 2 years
-Biomedical Research
- Clinical Research
- Public Health Research
- Overseas Fellowships of up to 3 years (2 years O/S)
- Career Development Fellowships of up to 5 years.
Applications are due in Research Branch 11 May 2007.

The Embassy of France in Australia - French lessons for scientists
The Embassy of France in Australia is pleased to offer its program ‘French lessons for scientists’ in 2007.
The following persons are invited to apply to benefit from the program:
-Researchers,
-Academics,
-PhD students (especially enrolled in Cotutelle) and
-Administrative staff, preferably involved in International Relations, and working
for Research or Academic institutions.
Lessons will be held at 6 major Alliances Francaises around Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney) and aim to improve general language knowledge, depending on each student's level. The program is not a scientific nor a specific terminology course, and applications from all levels (beginners to advanced) will be considered. ARC Discovery Projects Information Session
Time and Date: 1pm - 2pm, Wednesday, 22 November 2006
Place: Equinox Room, Level 4 Union House, North Terrace Campus
The DVC(R) Professor Alan Johnson will be presenting an information session for those wishing to apply for an ARC Discovery Project in 2007.
Current member of the ARC College of Experts, A/Professor Jeff Schwartz, and ARC Federation Fellow and past member of the College of Experts, Professor Graeme Hugo will also talk and share their invaluable knowledge and experience and will be happy to answer questions regarding ARC Discovery Projects.
After the presentation and questions A/Professor Jeff Schwartz will continue with a session regarding Biological and Biomedical Research Funding by the ARC.
The ARC funds basic biological research, even research with a biomedical endpoint. However, the applicability of the research and the presentation of the proposal are different for ARC versus NHMRC. In an effort to prevent local investigators from missing out on valid funding opportunities. A/Professor Schwartz will discuss ARC perspectives on biomedical type research.

NHMRC Applicant Workshop - Dementia Research Grants Program
The NHMRC, together with the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, is conducting a workshop on Policy Relevance and Methodology for potential applicants for strategic awards in dementia research. The aim of the Dementia Research Grants Program is to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers through research into identified gaps in applied and translational dementia research.
WORKSHOP DATE: 27 November 2006.
LOCATION: Stamford Plaza Hotel, North Terrace Adelaide SA.
TIME: 10am ? 4pm
COST: Free
The workshop will provide practical advice and support to potential applicants
to increase the quality and competitiveness of

NHMRC - Palliative Care Research Program Training Awards
The Palliative Care Research Program is a joint initiative between the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Department of Health and Ageing. The Program aims to improve the quality of palliative care by funding research and research capacity building initiatives, including offering training awards. The program seeks to provide a platform to assist the palliative care research community to develop experience and skills to enable them to successfully attract funding from other sources. The University Of Adelaide and CSIRO Health Sciences And Nutrition Collaborative Grants Program - The Brailsford Robertson Award 2007 - 2008
The University of Adelaide and CSIRO Human Nutrition are jointly funding an award of $200,000 to encourage collaborative research into life sciences between members of the two organisations. Where appropriate, industry and/or international collaboration will be highly regarded.
The award will fund a collaborative research project between members of the two organisations, recognising the contribution of Professor T Brailsford Robertson to the University of Adelaide as Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry (1919-1927) and to CSR (later CSIRO) as Chief of the Division of Animal Nutrition (1927-1930).
Projects with the potential to forge links with international research institutes in food, nutrition and health are strongly encouraged, as are those with the potential to lead to more significant research programs, which would have the capacity to attract funding and support from sources external to the University and the CSIRO.
An amount up to a total of $200,000 over two years will be awarded to the successful applicant team.
Proposals for the Brailsford Robertson Award for 2007-2008 are now invited from members of the University and CSIRO Human Nutrition.

Prizes
Florey Medal & Prize
The 2006 Merck Sharp & Dohme Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian, or Australians, for a milestone achievement in biomedical science and human health advancement arising from research carried out in Australia. The Award carries a prize of $25,000. Nominations for the 2006 Merck Sharpe & Dohme Florey Medal should be received by the Florey Medal Selection Committee by 23 November 2006 (apply direct). Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History
The Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History 2006 will be awarded to an individual or group, for an outstanding publication or body of work that contributes significantly to an understanding of Australian history. The prize comprises an embossed gold medal and a grant of $100,000.
The subjects of work submitted could include, but are not limited to:
- historical events
- hisorical figures (including biographies); and
- work covering a particular subject.
Eligible nominations can include a published book, a documentary film, a documentary for radio or television, CD-ROM, DVD, other form of multimedia or a series of these works. Submissions must have been first published, produced or broadcast between 20 September 2004 and 20 September 2006. Nominations close (apply direct) on 17 November 2006. 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Awards
The NSW Literary Awards were established to honour distinguished achievement by Australian writers. Nominations are sought for the Christina Stead Prize, the UTS Award for New Writing, the Douglas Stewart Prize, the Kenneth Slessor Prize, the Patricia Wrightson Prize, the Ethel Turner Prize, the Play Award, the Script Writing Award, the Community Relations Commission For a multicultural NSW Award, and the Gleebooks Prize. Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards

Australian Institute of Urban Studies (South Australia) Early Career Research Prize
The AIUS Urban Studies Early Career Research Prize is an annual prize of $1,500 awarded for an outstanding research paper by an Early Career Researcher addressing an urban theme of relevance to South Australia. Volvo Environment Prize
The Volvo Environment Prize Foundation invites universities, research institutes, scientists and engineers in the field of environmental protection, life sciences, earth sciences and social sciences, by national academies of science and their staff as well as other persons and organisations to submit nominations for the 2007 Volvo Environment Prize.
The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded for “Outstanding innovations or discoveries scientific, socio-economic, or technological which have direct or indirect significance in the environmental field and are of global or regional importance”. Rolex Awards for Enterprise
For 30 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have provided financial support
for exceptional individuals with groundbreaking projects that:
-expand our knowledge of the world;
-improve quality of life on the planet or
-enhance the human condition.
The awards are presented in every two years in five areas: Science and Medicine, Technology and Innovation, Exploration and Discovery, The Environment and Cultural Heritage. However a project may be submitted in almost any field of endeavour. Projects must be innovative, feasible and demonstrate a spirit of enterprise.
