NHMRC Funding Outcomes

Research Branch congratulates all the researchers who have been successful in the NHMRC Project Grants, Program Grants, Centre for Clinical Research Excellence, Research Fellowships, Practitioner Fellowships, and Career Development Award Fellowships for funding in 2007. Departmental/School statistics are available on the Grants Awarded page. The NHMRC advise that results for Development Grants and Training Award Fellowships will be announced mid-December.

Strategic Health Research Program 2006-2007 Extension of Closing Date

The closing date for this scheme has been extended 2 weeks. Applications are now due in Research Branch 13 November 2006. The SA Department of Health has made available $1.5 million in 2006-2007 for research that meets the research and information needs of the Department. Applications are being invited for projects which address specific research topics and
questions which have been developed by the Department of Health to be funded under the Strategic Health Research Program (SHRP). Funding Guidelines, Registration Form, Expression of Interest Form and Research Priorities are available from the SHRP website, http://www.health.sa.gov.au/shrp or alternatively by email shrp@health.sa.gov.au

Application Process
Interested applicants must register first using the form available on the SHRP website by COB Monday 23rd October 2006.

2 hard copies + electronic of the Expression of Interest are due in Research Branch by 13 November 2006, except for Aboriginal ‘New Research’ projects, where expressions of interest will be due by 27 November 2006.

Horticulture Australia - Industry Call

The Industry Call is for R&D proposals involving levy and/or industry endorsed voluntary contributions. Proposals are reviewed by the relevant Industry Advisory Committees and therefore must align with the industry strategic plan and industry
priorities. The application is to be completed online + 1 copy submitted to Research Branch by 13 November 2006. Further information is available at http://www.horticulture.com.au/working_hal/overview_industrypriorities.asp

Lirabenda Endowment Fund Research Grants

The Lirabenda Endowment Fund has recently been established by the Field Naturalists Society of South Australia Inc.(FNSSA). The FNSSA has had amongst its aims the promotion of the study and diffusion of knowledge relating to natural sciences. It promotes the conservation of natural features and habitat and the preservation of native flora and fauna of Australia and, in particular, South Australia. One of the aims of the Fund is to encourage and promote research into the biota and natural environment of South Australia and it is offering research grants to further this aim. Applications are encouraged from research institutions for supervised project funding at the Honours Degree, Masters Degree and PhD levels and for projects conducted by researchers at South Australian Research Institutes. Florey Medal & Prize

The 2006 Merck Sharp & Dohme Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian, or Australians, for a milestone achievement in biomedical science and human health advancement arising from research carried out in Australia. The Award carries a prize of $25,000. Nominations for the 2006 Merck Sharpe & Dohme Florey Medal should be received by the Florey Medal Selection Committee by 23 November 2006 (apply direct). Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History

The Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History 2006 will be awarded to an individual or group, for an outstanding publication or body of work that contributes significantly to an understanding of Australian history. The prize comprises an embossed gold medal and a grant of $100,000.

The subjects of work submitted could include, but are not limited to:

  • historical events
  • hisorical figures (including biographies); and
  • work covering a particular subject.

Eligible nominations can include a published book, a documentary film, a documentary for radio or television, CD-ROM, DVD, other form of multimedia or a series of these works. Submissions must have been first published, produced or broadcast between 20 September 2004 and 20 September 2006. Nominations close (apply direct) on 17 November 2006. 2007 NSW Premier's Literary Awards

The NSW Literary Awards were established to honour distinguished achievement by Australian writers. Nominations are sought for the Christina Stead Prize, the UTS Award for New Writing, the Douglas Stewart Prize, the Kenneth Slessor Prize, the Patricia Wrightson Prize, the Ethel Turner Prize, the Play Award, the Script Writing Award, the Community Relations Commission For a multicultural NSW Award, and the Gleebooks Prize. NHMRC - Palliative Care Research Program Training Awards

The Palliative Care Research Program is a joint initiative between the National Health and Medical Research Council and the Department of Health and Ageing. The Program aims to improve the quality of palliative care by funding research and research capacity building initiatives, including offering training awards. The program seeks to provide a platform to assist the palliative care research community to develop experience and skills to enable them to successfully attract funding from other sources. QANTAS Researcher Travel Support Scheme for Emerging Researchers

Applications are invited for awards from the 2006 Qantas Researcher Travel Support Scheme. Applicants should be early researchers at the University of Adelaide actively engaged in research and seeking to develop their research profile and support through engagement in the international research community. This scheme will provide support for the full air travel component of strategic research activities such as:
· presentations at international/overseas national conferences,
· visits to and work undertaken at overseas research groups and laboratories or specialist facilities
· study leave for these purposes.

ARC Linkage Projects Now Open

ARC Linkage-Projects aims to foster alliances between higher education institutions and external organisations. A specific objective of this programme is to provide opportunities for Postdoctoral and Postgraduate researchers to pursue high quality research collaboration with external organisations.

Applications are now available in GAMS.

The University Of Adelaide and CSIRO Health Sciences And Nutrition Collaborative Grants Program - The Brailsford Robertson Award 2007 - 2008

The University of Adelaide and CSIRO Human Nutrition are jointly funding an award of $200,000 to encourage collaborative research into life sciences between members of the two organisations. Where appropriate, industry and/or international collaboration will be highly regarded.

The award will fund a collaborative research project between members of the two organisations, recognising the contribution of Professor T Brailsford Robertson to the University of Adelaide as Professor of Physiology and Biochemistry (1919-1927) and to CSR (later CSIRO) as Chief of the Division of Animal Nutrition (1927-1930).

Projects with the potential to forge links with international research institutes in food, nutrition and health are strongly encouraged, as are those with the potential to lead to more significant research programs, which would have the capacity to attract funding and support from sources external to the University and the CSIRO.

An amount up to a total of $200,000 over two years will be awarded to the successful applicant team.

Proposals for the Brailsford Robertson Award for 2007-2008 are now invited from members of the University and CSIRO Human Nutrition.

Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards

The purpose of the Channel 9 Young Achiever Awards is to acknowledge, encourage and most importantly promote the positive achievements of young South Australians aged between 14 and 26 years of age. The Awards recognise the achievements of South Australia’s youth in nine categories, which are:

Australian Institute of Urban Studies (South Australia) Early Career Research Prize

The AIUS Urban Studies Early Career Research Prize is an annual prize of $1,500 awarded for an outstanding research paper by an Early Career Researcher addressing an urban theme of relevance to South Australia. Rolex Awards for Enterprise

For 30 years, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have provided financial support for exceptional individuals with groundbreaking projects that:
-expand our knowledge of the world;
-improve quality of life on the planet or
-enhance the human condition.

The awards are presented in every two years in five areas: Science and Medicine, Technology and Innovation, Exploration and Discovery, The Environment and Cultural Heritage. However a project may be submitted in almost any field of endeavour. Projects must be innovative, feasible and demonstrate a spirit of enterprise.
