New Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

The NHMRC, in partnership with the Australian Research Council and Universities Australia, and through extensive public consultation, has developed the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research. The Code replaces the Joint NHMRC/AVCC Statement and Guidelines on Research Practice (1997).

The Code advocates and describes best practice in research for researchers and institutions, as well as setting out a framework for handling breaches of the Code. While the document is aimed at universities and researchers in the public sector, it can be applied by any organisation involved in conducting research.

The Code provides advice on how to manage research data and materials; how to publish and disseminate research findings (including proper attribution of authorship); obligations in peer review; how to collaborate across institutions; and how to manage conflicts of interest. The Code also provides guidance to institutions when establishing independent external inquiries to evaluate allegations of serious misconduct.

The Code is written specifically for universities and other public sector research institutions and is also intended to inform the public about the standards expected of Australian research institutes and individual researchers.

Compliance with the Code is a prerequisite for National Health and Medical Research Council funding. Researchers are encouraged to acquaint themselves with, and meet, the requirements of the new Code as soon as possible.

The new code can be found here http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/r39syn.htm

A summary of the new code can be found here http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/r39syn_summary.htm

Any questions concerning the introduction of the new Code should be directed to the Research Branch (simon.brennan@adelaide.edu.au) in the first instance.

  • provide data for Strategy and Planning http://www.adelaide.edu.au/sp/statistics/research/
  • provide data for research committees and research management
  • provide references for the University of Adelaide's repository to provide access to the public via the internet to the University of Adelaide's research publications

The collection is used by the Group of 8 Universities for comparative analysis of research performance.

The University's publication performance in the DEST Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) in 2006 increased from 1550.3 to 1674.0 an increase of 8% or 124 DEST points. 2006 University of Adelaide DEST HERDC Publications are available for the Research Branch Website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/pub/Pub2006.html. The publications are presented by School / Discipline within Faculties and provides a bibliographic listing of publications that where included in the Higher Education Research Data Collection

UTS Conference on Cosmopolitan Societies

4-5 October 2007, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia

Call for Papers

What does cosmopolitanism mean in an age where globalisation is accompanied by the War on Terror, and where unprecedented levels of international migration are accompanied by attacks on multiculturalism and heightened ‘border security’ politics?

What futures can we imagine for cosmopolitan civil societies as community advocates and organisations struggle against defunding and the silencing of independent voices?

International and Comparative Perspectives are invited, as are submissions for workshop proposals (1½ hours). Submissions should be forwarded to ccs@uts.edu.au by 31 August 2007.

Please include the Title of the Paper; an Abstract (200 words), a short biography (100 words) and the institutional details of presenter(s).

Peer Review: Double blind peer review of full papers has now closed. However, you may submit your abstract for refereeing, or submit an abstract to our unrefereed stream. Further details are available on the flyer.

The Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) Grants

The aim of the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) Grants Programme is to support the documentation of Australia's biological diversity and to improve and increase the national taxonomic effort. The intent of the scheme is to fund rigorous taxonomic treatment mainly at a species level and work contributing to regional or continental generic or higher level reviews, including the development of identification aids to taxa.

The ABRS Participatory Programme recognises two types of grants.

  1. Research Project Grants for which the primary aim is to undertake systematic research on the Australian Biota; and
  2. Biodiversity Information Product Grants for the development or design of a discrete product that aids in the dissemination of taxonomic information to the wider community. The products can be in the form of published or on-line interactive keys, development of databases such as completing a section of the Australian Faunal Directory, completion of ABRS publications such as the Flora of Australia, field-guides, and any other value-added product that facilitates the easy dissemination of taxonomic information

Applications close 3rd November 2007

NHMRC Development Grants 2007

The second round of NHMRC Development Grant applications for 2007 for funding commencing March 2008 opened the 20 July 2007.

The Development Grants support the development of health or medical research that has commercial potential and may benefit the Australian community by providing funding for research commercialisation at the early proof-of-concept stage.

The scheme endeavours to bridge the funding gap between the end of a high quality basic research program and the developments required to make the project commercially attractive to possible investors. Development Grants provide funding for research commercialisation at the early proof-of-concept stage and while commercial partners are encouraged, it is not a requirement that applicants have a commercial partner in place.

Development Grants are designed to support development work undertaken in a human health related field, for example diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceutical product development, biotechnology, bioinformatics and biomaterials.

Funding is normally awarded for a period of one year. Funding may be provided for a maximum period of three years, subject to satisfactory achievement against agreed milestones. The grant request will usually not exceed $200,000 per annum.

Further information is available from the NHMRC website at http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/funding/apply/granttype/development/index.htm

Closing Date: 5pm Friday 14 September 2007.

The first round of Development Grant applications for 2007 for funding commencing September 2007 closed on 9 February. The NHMRC expects to be in a position to advise applicants of the outcomes shortly.
