National Archives of Australia's Ian Maclean Award
We offer Ian Maclean Awards to individuals interested in conducting research that will benefit the archival and historical profession in Australia and promote the important contribution that archives make to society. The principal benefit of an award for the recipient is the opportunity to complete an innovative research project that may require travel or time away from their regular employment.

Cardiovascular Disease and Depression Strategic Research Program
The Heart Foundation and beyondblue: the national depression initiative are partnering to fund strategic research in the area of depression and cardiovascular disease. This research program aims to achieve an improvement in health outcomes for those with co-morbid cardiovascular disease and depression through application-focused, practical research with specific endpoints and clearly defined pathways. Research proposals should fit within the themes of 'Prevention' and/or 'Recovery'.
Grants of 1 - 5 years duration with a funding value of $10,000 - $1,000,000 (exclusive of GST) per annum are invited. Funding will be awarded based on relevance, project potential, merit/feasibility and track record.
The closing date for Expressions of Interest for this grant funding is 5.00pm, Monday 8 October 2007.

American Fund for Suicide Prevention
AFSP offers five types of research grants:
- Distinguished Investigator Grants for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.
- Standard Research Grants for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.
- Young Investigator Grants for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. These grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
- Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.
- Pilot Grants of up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

Association for International Cancer Research
AICR finances fundamental scientific research into the causes of cancer. We are currently supporting the work of more than 300 scientists in 23 countries. We are funding in excess of 230 projects in over 80 of the world's top scientific establishments.

National Institute of Health -Methods of Statistical Analysis of DNA Sequence Data for Studies Relating Variation to Disease

Chiang Ching
Funded by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for Scholarly Exchange, ACLS offers a program of support for conferences and publications on "New Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society."
This program is intended to support projects in the humanities and related social sciences that bridge disciplinary or geographic boundaries, engage new kinds of information, develop fresh approaches to traditional materials and issues, or otherwise bring innovative perspectives to the study of Chinese culture and society.

Academic Research Grant Program

Funding Opportunities

New Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research
The NHMRC, in partnership with the Australian Research Council and Universities Australia, and through extensive public consultation, has developed the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research. The Code replaces the Joint NHMRC/AVCC Statement and Guidelines on Research Practice (1997).
The Code advocates and describes best practice in research for researchers and institutions, as well as setting out a framework for handling breaches of the Code. While the document is aimed at universities and researchers in the public sector, it can be applied by any organisation involved in conducting research.
The Code provides advice on how to manage research data and materials; how to publish and disseminate research findings (including proper attribution of authorship); obligations in peer review; how to collaborate across institutions; and how to manage conflicts of interest. The Code also provides guidance to institutions when establishing independent external inquiries to evaluate allegations of serious misconduct.
The Code is written specifically for universities and other public sector research institutions and is also intended to inform the public about the standards expected of Australian research institutes and individual researchers.
Compliance with the Code is a prerequisite for National Health and Medical Research Council funding. Researchers are encouraged to acquaint themselves with, and meet, the requirements of the new Code as soon as possible.

2007 University of Adelaide DEST HERDC Publications Collection arrangements.
Academics, Students and University of Adelaide Affiliates are reminded that their publications for 2007 can be submitted to their School's publication coordinator.
The deadline for submission of publications to the Research Branch is 31 March 2008.
The process for the 2007 DEST Higher Education Research Data Collection of publications has undergone changes aimed at simplifying the processes in the disciplines and schools. Support material is located at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/pub/.
The objective of this annual collection is to
- comply with the requirements of the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC)
- provide data for Strategy and Planning http://www.adelaide.edu.au/sp/statistics/research/
- provide data for research committees and research management
- provide references for the University of Adelaide's repository to provide access to the public via the internet to the University of Adelaide's research publications
The collection is used by the Group of 8 Universities for comparative analysis of research performance.
The University's publication performance in the DEST Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) in 2006 increased from 1550.3 to 1674.0 an increase of 8% or 124 DEST points. 2006 University of Adelaide DEST HERDC Publications are available for the Research Branch Website http://www.adelaide.edu.au/rb/pub/Pub2006.html. The publications are presented by School / Discipline within Faculties and provides a bibliographic listing of publications that where included in the Higher Education Research Data Collection

Group of Eight announces 2008 European Fellowships
The Group of Eight today announced its 2008 Round of Fellowships for early career researchers from Europe.
The $20,000 Fellowships are open to eligible researchers from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria..
A two stage application process will apply this year.
Applications from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria open on 1 September 2007 and close on 5 October 2007.
Applications from Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland will open on 11 September and close on 19 October 2007.

National Eye Health Initiative - Request for Funding Application
The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing is seeking applications from health related organisations that can demonstrate the ability to undertake projects that trial and evaluate new approaches to the delivery of eye health care in Australia. One-off grants between $15,000 and $150,000 (GST exclusive) are being made available over two years.
Funding will be available for projects that have the potential to enhance the delivery of eye health care and improve the quality and safety of care. Special consideration will be given to proposals targeting marginalised and disadvantaged people or groups at particular risk of eye disease and injury.

2007 Crawford Fund Fellowship
The 2007 Crawford Fund Fellowship will be offered to an agricultural scientist who is below the age of 35 and a citizen of,or who is working in, one the following countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Fiji, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Is, Tonga, Tuvalu and Kirabati, Vanuatu,Viet-Nam.

Go8 - DAAD German Research Exchange Scheme Announced
Research collaboration between Australia and Germany will be enhanced through a new researcher exchange scheme between the Group of Eight and the German Academic Service (DAAD). The DAAD is Germany’s national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. With a budget of over 250 million euros (AUD410 million), it is one of the world’s largest and most respected organisations in its field.
Under the Go8 Australia Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme the Go8 and the DAAD have each agreed to provide AUD200,000 a year from 2008 to 2010 to meet the travel and living costs of researchers who spend time at collaborating institutions in Australia or Germany.

What does cosmopolitanism mean in an age where globalisation is accompanied by the War on Terror, and where unprecedented levels of international migration are accompanied by attacks on multiculturalism and heightened ‘border security’ politics?
What futures can we imagine for cosmopolitan civil societies as community advocates and organisations struggle against defunding and the silencing of independent voices?
International and Comparative Perspectives are invited, as are submissions for workshop proposals (1½ hours). Submissions should be forwarded to ccs@uts.edu.au by 31 August 2007.

Open Forum-National Security Science and Technology Unit (NSST)
There will be an Open Forum of the National Security Science and Technology Unit (formerly the Science Engineering and Technology Unit) presented by Richard Davis, Head of NSST - Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
The NSST has been implementing a research and development programme that enhances support for Australia's counter-terrorism needs. The Unit collaborates closely with other counter-terrorism agencies to develop the technical requirements that will guide future research in this area.
The NSST Unit aims to develop greater understanding of potential research and development capabilities that can be drawn from Universities, publicly funded research agencies etc and therefore welcomes any interested parties to the Open Forum to be held at:

GlaxoSmithKline Australia - Award for Research Excellence 2008
Since its inception in 1980, the GlaxSmithKline Australia Award for Research Excellence has recognised world-class Australian medical research, and the annual presentation dinner has become a significant event in the Australian research calendar. Recipients of the GlaxoSmithKline Award for Research Excellence receive an honorarium of $50,000 to acknowledge their discovery and contribution to science and help further their work.

Dan David Prize
The Dan David Prize annually awards 3 prizes of US$ 1 million each for achievements having an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social impact on our world. The Royal Society of New South Wales Award Invitations 2007
The Walter Burfitt Prize 2007
The Walter Burfitt Prize is awarded at intervals of three years to the worker in pure or applied science, resident in Australia or New Zealand, whose papers and other contributions published during the past six years are deemed of the highest scientific merit.
The Edgeworth David Medal 2007
The Edgworth David Medal is awarded for distinguished contributions by a young scientist. Nominations are called for the names of suitable persons who have contributed significantly to science, including scientific aspects of agriculture, engineering, dentistry, medicine and veterinary science.
The Clarke Medal 2007
The Clarke Medal, established in memory of the Reverend William Branwhite Clarke, MA, FRS, FGS, Vice-President of The Royal Society of New South Wales.. This year's award is in the field of Geology in all its aspects, and nominations are called for the names of suitable persons who have contributed significantly to the science of Geology.
Attention MSc, MA or PhD Graduates - Call for Scientific Papers
The Royal Society of New South Wales wished to provide a medium for the wider dissemination of the work performed as the MSc/MA and PhD levels. Therefore, the Council of the Society is willing to publish abstracts (maximum 500 words) of MSc, MA and PhD theses on application by the author or supervisor.
Applications for these awards are due onthe 30th September, 2007.

Adelaide Research & Innovation Impact Awards
More than $35,000 prize money is up for grabs over the next three months for the most innovative University of Adelaide researchers. The financial incentive is being provided by Adelaide Research & Innovation Pty Ltd (ARI). ARI is offering four separate awards to the University's researchers and affiliates who can demonstrate successful commercial partnerships with industry and projects that are making an impact on the community, the State and around the world..

The Millennium Technology Prize
The Millennium Technology Prize is a biannual award given to a groundbreaking innovation that promotes people's quality of life, contributes towards the realisation of humane values and encourages sustainable development.
