Open Forum-National Security Science and Technology Unit (NSST)
There will be an Open Forum of the National Security Science and Technology Unit (formerly the Science Engineering and Technology Unit) presented by Richard Davis, Head of NSST - Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The NSST has been implementing a research and development programme that enhances support for Australia's counter-terrorism needs. The Unit collaborates closely with other counter-terrorism agencies to develop the technical requirements that will guide future research in this area. The NSST Unit aims to develop greater understanding of potential research and development capabilities that can be drawn from Universities, publicly funded research agencies etc and therefore welcomes any interested parties to the Open Forum to be held at:

FEAST Seminar in Adelaide - 18 September 07
What is FEAST?
Forum of European-Australian Science and Technology Cooperation (FEAST) is the organisation established to highlight, promote, and facilitate research collaboration between the European and Australian research communities A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Australia and Europe was recently signed which will help accelerate the transfer of knowledge. This MoU will allow both centres to tap into the banks of knowledge the other has accumulated over the years, thereby expanding the horizons of the future.
What are the aims?
FEAST aims to:
- Highlight existing multilateral and bilateral S&T cooperation between Europe and Australia
- Improve this cooperation, particularly multilateral cooperation, through identifying priorities and enhancing the quality, quantity and visibility of future action.
What are its objectives?
- To increase the links between European and Australian researchers
- To better identify, promote, and demonstrate cooperation
- To improve the process of providing information on Australian and European programmes promoting cooperating between Europe and Australia
- To exchange best practices and support cutting edge research
- To provide opportunities for present state of the art S&T, and improve the prospects for cooperation in these fields

Premier’s Science & Research Fund - Information Session

Animal Ethics Course: The use of animals in Science - Ethical and Practical Considerations
To be held on Friday 9 March 2007 from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm in the National Wine
Centre of Australia, Busby Hall, Corner of Botanic and Hackney Roads. The Animal Ethics Committees of the University of Adelaide and the Institute
of Medical and Veterinary Science will jointly conduct a one day training course
for staff and honours/postgraduate students, including those at other institutions,
on Friday 9 March, 2007. The course is particularly aimed at new users but is
of interest and value to animal users generally. No fee is charged. Registration

Heart Foundation Information Session

Medical School South, Frome RoadThe presentation will outline each award currently being offered by the Heart
Foundation in clinical, biomedical or public health research: Grants-in-aid;
Postgraduate Scholarships; Postdoctoral Fellowships; Career Development Fellowships;
Overseas Fellowships; Vacation Scholarships; and Travel Grants. The information
session is valuable for all researchers considering applying for Heart Foundation
funding, in particular, those applying for the first time. The information sessions

The 2006 Brailsford Robertson Award Presentation & Lecture - Reminder
The University of Adelaide and CSIRO Human Nutrition are jointly funding an
award of $200,000 over two years to encourage collaborative research in areas
identified as strategic priorities by CSIRO (Obesity, Obesity-related diseases
such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer, Novel carbohydrate-based
foods and Attitudes to novel technologies) and the University of Adelaide (Healthy

ARC Discovery Projects Information Session
Time and Date: 1pm - 2pm, Wednesday, 22 November 2006
Place: Equinox Room, Level 4 Union House, North Terrace Campus The DVC(R) Professor Alan Johnson will be presenting an information session
for those wishing to apply for an ARC Discovery Project in 2007. Current member of the ARC College of Experts, A/Professor Jeff Schwartz, and
ARC Federation Fellow and past member of the College of Experts, Professor Graeme
Hugo will also talk and share their invaluable knowledge and experience and
will be happy to answer questions regarding ARC Discovery Projects. After the presentation and questions A/Professor Jeff Schwartz will continue
with a session regarding Biological and Biomedical Research Funding by the ARC.
The ARC funds basic biological research, even research with a biomedical endpoint.
However, the applicability of the research and the presentation of the proposal
are different for ARC versus NHMRC. In an effort to prevent local investigators
from missing out on valid funding opportunities. A/Professor Schwartz will discuss

ABRS Funding Opportunities Information Session
Professor Andrew Austin is presenting an information session for researchers
interested in applying for an Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) grant

NHMRC Roadshow
The NHMRC Research Committee will be conducting a national road-show during
May and June of this year. The purpose of the road-show is to provide an opportunity

The State We Are In - State Strategic Plans Seminar
The State Government has developed a range of strategic plans that it uses
to assess new initiatives and co-investment opportunities. For researchers who
want to seek funding or partnership from state government for new research ideas,
it is important that they are fully aware of these plans, and can identify how
their research will help deliver against the state's strategic objectives.The Research Clusters of the University of Adelaide and Research Branch are
pleased to present a Seminar that will outline the key strategic planning documents
for the State Government of South Australia. This is a valuable opportunity for
you to be briefed on these documents and seek further advice from senior state
public servants. The seminar will be held on 2:00pm-4:00pm Friday 2 June 2006.

Council (NHMRC) are collaborating to develop a new initiative, Thinking Systems,
which will progress the Australian Government's National Research Priority goals
for Breakthrough Science and Frontier Technologies under the National Research
Priority Frontier Technologies for Building and Transforming Australian Industries. The roadshow is to be held on Tuesday 20 September 2005 at 10am in the Theatre
S3 Teletheatre in the IST Building at Flinders University. If you are interested
