The Australian Music Examinations Board was officially formed in 1918. Prior to this a joint scheme originally established in 1906 between the University of Melbourne and the University of Adelaide's Music Examinations Board established a system of public examinations in music theory and practice. Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia and later the NSW State Conservatorium of Music subsequently joined the scheme. The Board was responsible for the management of musical education of all grades. The series consists of minutes of the annual conference first held in 1912 to consider issues relating to music education and examination. Copies of some missing minutes are held in the South Australian Music Examinations Board minutes (see Series1360). There are also copies of confidential minutes for 1967 and 1971-1983.
