Establishment of the University Association
The records consist of letters, drafts and memos to and from the University Association which was constituted in 1872 to promote the establishment of a university in Adelaide. The Association's aims were to secure further members and financial support, appoint professors and lecturers, arrange classes and to establish the university formally by Act of Parliament. The records include state government matters and correspondence with solicitors, Knox & Thrupp. Some of the correspondence appears not to be related to the University.

Acceptances of Membership of University Association Committee
At the first meeting of the University Association held on 7 September 1872, a list of names was compiled whose consent to act on the Committee it was considered desirable to obtain. The records consist of acceptances from eleven of those listed including F.G. Waterhouse, Marshall MacDermott, Dr J.M. Gunson, W. Eggers, Sir John Morphett, Dr A. Campbell, J.H. Angas, Charles H. South Australian Government and Development of the University Act
The records consist of correspondence with South Australian Government officials and the Agent General regarding issues around the development of the Act of Incorporation for the University of Adelaide. Hughes Endowment
In 1872 Walter Watson Hughes announced his intention to give \xA320,000 for the promotion of a university. In the deed of gift it was agreed that the money was to endow professorships. When further donations were slow to eventuate, Hughes suggested the money be applied to other educational projects and he left Adelaide early in 1873 taking no further part in the establishment of the university. The records consist of correspondence regarding conditions of the Hughes endowment and the appointment of the Hughes Professors, Reverend Henry Read and Reverend John Davidson. There is also a letter and typed transcription dated 1962 titled "Notes for Consideration on points desirable to be laid before Mr. W.W. Hughes".

Return of Academic Staff & Salaries at the University of Melbourne
The Victorian Legislative Assembly requested the University of Melbourne Registrar to supply a Return showing details of expenditure of an item in the balance-sheet of the University for the Year 1873. The return gives the name of every person who received payment, describes the office filled, and the nature of the services rendered to the University.

Application of Rev. Bleasdale for Chair of Chemistry & Mineralogy
Reverend John I. Bleasdale of the Industrial and Technological Museum, Melbourne, first wrote to the University of Adelaide in 1873 submitting an application for appointment as the Chair of Chemistry & Mineralogy (see Item 15). This envelope contains a follow up application and letter to the Chancellor which were submitted to the University Council for consideration, but appears to have been unsuccessful.

First Commencement Ceremony
The first commencement ceremony took place on 2 May 1877 in the Adelaide Town Hall. Degrees were conferred Ad Eundem Gradum to approved applicants who already had awards in literature or science from other recognised institutions. This enabled the establishment of the Senate as a constituent element of University governance. The main address was given by the Chancellor, The Right Rev Dr Augustus Short, Lord Bishop of Adelaide. Building Design Competition

Designs were submitted for the Building Designs Competition on the 31 October 1876. It is unclear from the records who won first prize - James MacGeorge or Michael Egan. Ultimately, however, William McWinn was employed instead. The records consist of detailed conditions of the competition as well as submitted designs with accompanying reports by a number of architects, including MacGeorge, Egan and Harrison. An article from The Advertiser, dated 20 February 1877, critically discusses these designs. There are several reports from the Designs Committee over the years in question, correspondence regarding finances, and numerous letters of criticism and complaints by Egan. Gas explosion at Brompton
On the evening of 28 March 1883 one of the gas holding tanks at the Brompton Gasworks exploded. It was held that the engineer and manager, Mr George Anderson, was responsible. A wave of criticism and condemnation followed, as seen in letters to the editor and newspaper reports on the coronial inquest into the incident. This record appears to be unrelated to the university.

There is also a copy of Simpson's student cards. The testimonials were donated by Mrs O Simpson in 1979 and forwarded to Dr Mike Tyler, who subsequently forwarded to the University Librarian in 1980. They were transferred to the University Archives in 2006.
