This series contains notes, blueprints, plans, reports and drawings related to a range of Engineering Department laboratory machines of the early to mid 20th century, beginning with the Riehle testing machine. There are also accounts reflecting the commercial use of some machines. Also included are catalogues, photographs and articles relating to the history of engineering in South Australia.

Riehle Testing Machine - Plans and Instructions

This item contains the original instructions for the Riehle US Standard Automatic and Autographic Testing Machine with Screw Beam, as produced by the Riehle Bros Testing Machine Co, Philadelphia in 1894. It also contains various typed instructions, and supplementary sheets provided by the company. Three blueprints depict various aspects of the machine. A handwritten page lists machine parts and costs, totalling 635 pounds.

Accounts for Use of the Riehle Testing Machine

These folders contain accounts for the use of the Riehle Testing Machine from 1916 to 1968. The accounts are for tests performed by the University for various commercial and government clients. They are mostly compression tests, but also tests for other qualities such as flexural strength, transverse tests, sieve analyses, tensile and cold bend tests, et al. Some miscellaneous hand-noted summaries of testing fees are present. The first three items are ledger books, and the last two are loose-leaf summaries.
Folder 1 contains accounts for 1916 - May 1926. It contains the actual invoice information, ordered alphabetically by client name.
Folder 2 contains accounts for May 1926 - March 1935. It is ordered in the same way.
Folder 3 contains accounts for 1935 - 1942. It consists of account summaries, ordered chronologically.
Folder 4 contains accounts for 1942 - 1950. It consists of typed, loose-leaf account summaries, ordered chronologically.
Folder 5 contains accounts for 1951 - 1968. It is ordered in the same way as the previous folder.

Engineering Department Machine Plans

This item contains a ground floor plan for the Department of Engineering's Main Testing Laboratory in 1947, showing the position and relevant characteristics of 8 different machines: 1) 120K Tension Machine 2) 50T Riehle 3) 15 T Avery Machine 4) 100 T Avery Machine 5) 120 ft/lb and 23 ft/lb Impact Machine 6) 35T Beam Machine 7) 150T Column Machine 8) 25KFatigue Machine.
Plans are included from the period 1942-1948 for various other machines, including a 300K Column Machine, a 1 ton semi-gantry crane, a spherical bearing testing machine, a hydraulic operating valve on a broaching machine and a broach grinder.

300 KIP Column Machine Plans

This item contains plans for a 300 KIP Column Machine, also referred to as a 300,000 lb Testing Machine. Various aspects of the machine are detailed, including the hydraulic circuit, damage control valve, platform hand winch, steel frame side column,hydraulic ram, spherical bearing, cross-beams and castings, moving crosshead, fittings for moving crosshead and upper cross beam, and details of compression platen and tension screw assembly.

300K Compression Machine

This item contains notes, calculations and graphs relating to a 300 K Compression Machine. These are handwritten on loose-leaf paper which has been numbered as 38 pages and was originally held together with a metal clip. These notes are undated. Also present is a blueprint, provided by the South Australian Railways Mechanical Branch, with accompanying memo, in 1944, for the "Amsler" Testing Machine.

Some Comments on Column Machine Design and Drawings

This item contains two pages of handwritten comments on the Column Machine / 300 000 lb Testing Machine. A covering note, illegibly initialled [possibly GJR], notes that the date of the comments is unknown. Accompanying these are some brief notes on the 25000 lb fatigue machine and an unlabelled diagram of a machine.

120,000 lb Tension Machine Drawings

This item contains drawings and plans for a 120,000 lb Tension Machine, of which the last is a blueprint. Various aspects are depicted, including the cylinder and ram, spherical block attachment, top moving cross beam, top main cross beam, lower main cross beam, tension screw and wheel, upper platen, lower platen, tension rods, timber beam attachment, et al.

This item contains drawings and notes relating to a 300K Compression Machine. The notes are handwritten on looseleaf paper, numbered as 10 pages, with an initial index. Discussed are the specifications and assumptions, general layout, piston and cylinder, oil loss etc, top head and screw, frame, and lower platen. Also included are some miscellaneous notes and diagrams.

300,000 lb Testing Machine

This item contains a handwritten booklet entitled "Alternative Deisgn 300 000 # Testing Machine", numbered as 43 pages, with index, originally held together with a large metal clip. The booklet discusses general assembly of the machine, tension screw, moving crossheads, the main frame, the moving frame, eccentricity of loading, weight and approxiamte cost. This item also contains miscellanous diagrams, notes and calculations.

The Transmission Polariscope in Photo-Elasticity: Its function, its performance, its operation

This item consists of a report produced by JDC Crisp of the Research Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, University of Adelaide. It provides an overall review of the Polariscope, discussing its optical system, performance and fridge width, polarizing components, and the Polariscope in practice. It includes a synposis, bibliography and several appendices. A loose sheet of handwritten notes is tucked into the front of the booklet.
