Council Sub-Committee Records

Staff Club Matters - Records

In 1961 it was determined that the library would expand and cause the demolition of the Old Anatomy Building, where the Staff Club resided. The Club was to move into Building A, which was yet to exist, and were given the opportunity to make proposals for the design of this building according to their requirements. The design was a drawn-out process due to the constant rejection of the Club's proposals.
Record includes discussion concerning moving, plans/proposals for Building A, correspondence, finances, reports, and membership list for 1966.

Staff Club Notes - Records

Construction planning continues for 'Building A'. Records consist of a programme for all proposed building projects and costs, sketches, minutes, traffic flow & related issues, minutes, finances, and correspondence. At this time the Club sent out a questionnaire regarding the present staff club amenities and any future desires; results are included.

Development

Building Alterations - Structural & Feature Work

Temporary Premises Problems

In 1970 construction work finally began on Building A, causing the Staff Club to temporarily reside in the Napier Building. The space was unsatisfactory and issues quickly arose, the Club running at a loss for the first time in many years.
Records include trading and revenue account (1970), and correspondence.

Referendum - Location of Future Staff Club Building

With the impending decision to demolish the Old Anatomy Building to make way for an expansion of the library, the Club held a referendum to decide popular opinion on where to relocate. The two options were a) in the union complex, b) in 'Building A'. Records consist of 3 referendum papers, 1 unmarked.

Manager & Assistant Manager - Applications

Between 1958-60 Mr B.J. Rotgans was manager of the Club. He was replaced by Mr J. Simko, who resigned in 1966 but withdrew this two months later. He finally resigned in 1973. Scott was employed as Assistant Manager in 1962.
Record consists of applications, interview notices, acceptances and rejections.

Staff Club Art Displays

Union Proposals - Proposed Merger With the Union

In 1973/4 the proposal was raised to make several changes to the existing set up of the university: changes be made to the music department, and the amalgamation of the Club with the Union. The Club would be assigned a limited area of the Union Complex for lounge/bar purposes and eating, games, and other facilities shared with the general Union membership.

Building Alterations - Wives' Club

When renovations were made in 1961 the Wives' Club no longer had an exclusive room. After much negotiation their old room was renamed 'Lady Chapman Room' and opened for casual users when not booked by the Wives' Club (they received precedence).
Records include bookings for 1962, reports, and correspondence.

Wives Club

The plans to move the Staff Club caused concern among the Wives' Club that they would not enjoy the same privileges. A request was also made that an exclusive room would be made available for them when the Club moved location.

Local Opinion Poll - Granting of Liquor License

In 1961 the district of Adelaide voted over whether more publican licenses issued. This coincided with the Staff Club's application for such a license. Record includes reports, pamphlets, correspondence, minutes, and information of those who could help transport voters on voting day.

Staff Club Liquor License

Upon a favourable outcome to the opinion poll, the Club was immediately granted its license. The record includes circulars, instructions for license renewal, correspondence, licensing act (1932-53) & amendments for 1954 and 1967, Staff Club constitution, Staff Club rules, trading account for 1960, liquor sales (1961-2), Registered Clubs' Association of SA rules (1919).

Wine Sub-Committee Papers

The Club\x92s Wine Sub-Committee was established in 1965 \x91to consider day to day wine requirements as well as the stocking and supervision of a vintage cellar\x92. Material collected here includes copies of a regularly produced newsletter, which included wine reviews and offers to Club members, and minutes and agenda of Sub-Committee meetings to the mid-1980s.
