| Details Adelaide Teachers College, established in 1876, is [sic] the oldest in Australia with an ubroken history devoted to the training of teachers. The first Principal was Lewis B. Madley. 1876 - 1899 it was located in Grote Street. It was known initially as the Training School, but by 1879 became the Training College. The building later became the ground floor of the central building of the old Adelaide High School. 1900 - 1920 it was located in one, and later two, rooms of the University of Adelaide and became known as the University Training College. In 1913 it became the Teachers Training College. 1921 - May, 1927 it changed its name again to Teachers College and was located in the old Police Barracks part of which became the Children's Library, consequently transferred to Kintore Avenue. 1927 - moved to a new building on Kintore Avenue - now known as the Hartley Building. The modern buildings (Schulz Building, Madley Gymnasium, and Scott Theatre) replaced six temporary structures in September, 1964. 1973 - it made the transition to Adelaide College of Advanced Education, becoming independent of the Education Department, and took on other courses related to community needs. 1979 - it became the Adelaide College of the Arts and Education.
