| Description | In 1872 Walter Watson Hughes announced his intention to give £20,000 for the promotion of a university. In the deed of gift it was agreed that the money was to endow professorships. When further donations were slow to eventuate, Hughes suggested the money be applied to other educational projects and he left Adelaide early in 1873 taking no further part in the establishment of the university. The records consist of correspondence regarding conditions of the Hughes endowment and the appointment of the Hughes Professors, Reverend Henry Read and Reverend John Davidson. There is also a letter and typed transcription dated 1962 titled 'Notes for Consideration on points desirable to be laid before Mr. W.W. Hughes". |

I have a copy for 1870. If I remember rightly the copy for 1872 is in the same form as the Melbourne Calendar. I have been thinking about the effect of Mr. Hughes's Indenture on our future operation and I cannot avoid the conclusion that the conditions of the gift are such as will prevent our [Page 3] carrying out the intention with respect to the classes lately held by Union College. This is an important question and ought to be settled soon. I do not know whether all the gentlemen appointed as the subcommittee are returned from holiday keeping but I may suggest that it would be well to call a meeting on as early a day as we can be sure of Mr. Thrupp's attendance I am My dear Sir Yours Truly H. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 8/11 March 1873 Draft of Statute for appointment of Professors [Page 2] Adelaide 8th March 1873 To the Council of the University Association In accordance with the instructions given at last meeting of the Council your Committee have prepared and now beg to submit a draft of the provisions under which it appears advisable that future appointments of Professors should be made. In framing these provisions your Committee have examined the conditions under which such appointments are made in various Universities as well in the Mother Country as in Sydney and Melbourne, as set forth in the official publications of the several Universities. Of these the regulations adopted in Melbourne appearing to be more in accordance with the requirements of Adelaide than any of the others are, have been taken by your Committee as substantially the best model to be followed here. Leonard W. Thrupp [Page 3] Draft of Statute for appointment of Professors in the Adelaide University 1. Each Professor shall hold his office during good behaviours, unless he is incapacitated by illness extending over more than twelve months continuously from discharging all the duties attaching to his office and at the expiration of any such period of twelve months the Governing Body may declare the office of such Professor vacant and remove such Professor from his office and enrolments. 2. In case any Professors shall be temporarily incapacitated by sickness or other cause from performing the duties of his office, the Governing Body may appoint a substitute who shall receive at the discretion of that Body a sum not exceeding one half the salary of the Professor so incapacitated. 3. The Professors shall not sit in Parliament nor become Members of any Political association, neither shall they in any case give private instruction nor without the Sanction of the Governing Body deliver lectures to persons not being students of the University. 4. The Professors shall not receive any Students as Boarders in their houses 5. It shall be the duty of the Professors to take such part (if any) as the Governing Body may from time to time prescribe in conducting the University Examinations. [Copy] Letter Requesting Assent to Use of Endowment for Funding Lectureships
Author - George Young, Honorary Secretary of the University Association Addressee - Walter Watson Hughes
|
Image >> |
|
TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] University Association 28th March 1873 W. W. Hughes Esqre. Dear Sir The object of this letter will perhaps be best explained by referring you to the contents of the enclosed draft Report which has been prepared for the information of the Association. As time advanced it became evident to all, that the hope must be abandoned which had been at first entertained of being able to obtain the funds required for starting in a proper state of efficiency during the Session of this year the courses of University Instruction which we contemplated in addition to those handsomely provided for by you. At this same time it was felt that to commence with those two chairs only would in all probability lead to misunderstanding both of present motives and ultimate intentions and so endanger success of the whole scheme. Many who were inclined to give liberal aid would in that case have held aloof, while this ___ of the Government had distinctly intimated from the first ___ ___ were of assistance which they would ask Parliament to agree ____ depend on the manner in which the Institution, had thus ____ to the wants of the Community and had received the ____ of the Public. After much anxious deliberation it was [Page 2] resolved to aim for this session at the establishment of lectureship only, which would not engross the full time of the lecturers or Professors. Subject of course to your approval Mesrs Read and Davidson have in the most gratifying and self denying manner given their assent to this plan by which it is proposed to carry this into effect that is, they consent to place at the disposal of the Association for this year one half of the income secured ____ by your endowment. And it is to solicit your approval that I now by direction of the Council ___ ___. It is confidently believed that if the Association puts before the public such a course of instruction, commencing in lectureships this year, to be developed into fully efficient Chairs next year, funds will at once be forthcoming which will admit for all the lecturers being placed on a fair footing as regards fair remuneration for the duties of the first less(ons) and will also provide for all those expenses of rooms, fittings, apparatus, books etc etc which are indispensably necessary and if it is before Parliament meets we should be in a position to represent to Government that instruction has been systematic answered in five important branches of study, and to urge a claim for supplemental aid which if given only at the rate of pound for pound would for future years enable the Governing Body of the University to devoted the sum of say £600 per annum, if needful to the maintenance of each of the three chairs that will be established in addition to the two endowed by your generous act [Page 3] ___ ___ may reasonably be expected that this would not ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ of Parliament or the public and that ere long, other chairs would be established with adequate endowments. I enclose letters from Mr. Read and Mr. Davidson notifying their concurrence in the proposed plans, and I am ___ respectfully to ask if as is hoped you approve of it, you will kindly transmit your assent by telegram, as this would strengthen the hands of the Association six weeks earlier than if your communication was sent by mail only. I may add that gentlemen possessing suitable qualifications are understood to be available for two of the chairs, and that a gentleman in Melbourne of known scientific attainments has expressed his willingness to undertake for a time the duties of the others. ABSTRACT Duplicates of letters sent from Reverends Davidson and Read to W.W. Hughes as copied and retained by George Young. The originals were enclosed with a letter sent to Mr Hughes from George Young on behalf of the University Association. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 28 March 1873 Copy of letter to W.W. Hughes [Page 2] Copies 25 March 1873 My dear Mr Young, I shall be glad with the approval of Mr Hughes, to acquiesce in and to forward as much as I can any measure likely to secure the best interests of the University - I am inclined to think, that in present circumstances - the proposal suggested I the report is as wise a one as could be framed or adopted. Faithfully yours (signed) John Davidson --------------------------------------------------- Mitcham Parsonage March 26 1873 My dear Mr. Hughes At the request of the University Association I write to inform you that in common with Mr. Davidson, I have consented, subject to your approval, to waive for one year from the 1st of May half of my income as Professor of Classics the reason for this proposal is that as money has not come in to provide for other Professorships it has been thought that by this means the University might at once start on a course of usefulness, teaching five branches instead of only two; and that we might with more force urge the claims of the University on the Government and the general Public in the hope that during the year, the Association will be enabled to found other Professorships and leave us to draw our full pay from your endowment. The arrangement is only proposed as a temporary one, and Mr. Davidson and I have been requested to write to you to show you that the proposal has met with our consent and approval if it also met your approval. This step is thought to be the only way of ensuring the safety, and general acceptance of the University - I am dear Mr. Hughes faithfully yours (signed) Henry Read This item contains references to: establishment, University of Adelaide; University Association; benefactors; finance; course delivery; professors

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] University Association 30th April 1873 Revd. John Davidson Revd. and (D)ear Sir I am instructed to communicate to you the following resolution which was adopted at a meeting of the Council held yesterday. That the secretary write to Revds. Messrs. Read and Davidson enclosing copies of the resolutions passed at the meeting of the University Association on the 22 instant and informing them that in consequence of the first resolution the Council must decline with thanks their liberal offer to give up one half their salaries for one year - and also that in pursuance of the second resolution it will be the duty of the Council to communicate with Mr. Hughes with the view to modifying the condition upon which he has made his gift of £20,000. And that the Secretary further point out to Messrs. Read and Davidson that with the possibility of an alteration of the arrangement with Mr. Hughes and also the possibility that an Act of Incorporation will be passed subject to the conditions imposed by Mr. Hughes the council wish to caution Messrs. Read and Davidson against resigning their Cures or other sources of income or taking any proceedings which may injure them in case the present intentions [Page 2] of Mr. Hughes are not carried out. That the Secretary further inform Messrs. Read and Davidson that a Sub Committee will be appointed to communicate with Mr. Hughes in accordance with the instructions of the Association and will be instructed to confer with them on the subject prior to such communication being forwarded. The Resolutions which were passed at the meeting of the Association and which are referred to - the foregoing resolution of the Council were these 1. That this Association disapproves of the arrangement entered into between the Council and the Revd. Messrs. Davidson and Read by which those gentlemen have agreed to waive one half of their salaries for the first year of their service. 2. That the Report of the Council be adopted with the exception of that portion of it which refers to the arrangement of which the Association had recorded its disapproval in the foregoing resolution, and that it be on instruction to the Council respectfully to request Mr. Hughes to reconsider the conditions of his gift with a view to their modification, and also to apply to Parliament to obtain an Act of Incorporation and a grant from the public revenue and lands of the Colony in support of the proposed University. [Letter] Protest Concerning Appointment of Professors
Author - Reverend James Lyall Addressee - Adelaide University Association
|
Image >> |
|
TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 23 May 1873 Protest of Revd. J. Lyall [Page 2] I beg leave to express my dissent from that part of the letter to Mr. Hughes which requests him to leave the appointment of the Professors, to the Council which may hereafter be appointed: and I do so on the following grounds. 1. Such a proposal is tantamount to a request for the cancelling of the appointments which Mr. Hughes has already made - a thing which he cannot with a good grace be asked to do. 2. Such a proposal stultifies(?) the position already taken by the Council and by the Association - the Council having approved of the appointment of the Professors, and the Association having endorsed the action of the Council by adopting its report, with a slight amendment. 3. Such a proposal is eminently unfair to the Professors - they having agreed to the regulations determined on by the Council and having expressed their [Page 3] readiness to give up all other sources of enrolment. 4. Such a proposal exceeds other instructions of the Association under which the Council is at present acting - the Amendment Requesting Mr. Hughes to cancel the appointments having been rejected and the Report of the Council approving said appointments having been adapted by a decided majority. [Letter] Regarding Lecture Times and Commencement
Author - George Young, Honorary Secretary of the University Association Addressee - Reverend John Davidson

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] Glenelg, 31 May 1873 Sir Permit me to suggest that, if it be practicable, the English Literature, and Mental Philosophy Classes should meet during the day, that not more than five lectures should by delivered each week and that a commencement should be made at as early a date as possible. At the same time considering the probability of many students being [Page 2] prevented by other engagements from giving daily attendance, or attendance during the day. I am of opinion that it would be wise to determine the hours, and the frequency of the lectures, in such a way as to secure the greatest advantage to the students. So far as the lectures themselves are concerned, I propose to complete the courses begun last year in Connexion with Union College - and if necessary to commence junior classes - [Page 3] I am not prepared at present to suggest anything beyond what the immediate necessity requires, but I do feel extremely anxious to resume as speedily as possible the courses already initiated - I am Sir Yours faithfully John Davidson This item contains references to: establishment, University of Adelaide; Union College; course delivery

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] To The Secretary of The University Association Mitcham, June 2. 1873 Dear Sir, With reference to the opening of Classes, I would respectfully bring the following suggestions before the Council:- First, that the divisions of the Academical year be the same as the Terms in Melbourne, viz:- February Term. - From the last Wednesday in February to the first Wednesday in June, with a recess of a fortnight ending in the Thursday in Easter Week. July Term. - From the first Wednesday in July to the first Wednesday in September. October Term. - From the first Wednesday in October to the first Wednesday in December. Secondly: - That the subjects of Lectures, and Examinations be the same as those selected at Melbourne, and that the same Text books be adopted for the Classics [Page 2] Thirdly: - that the same Time Table of Lectures be adopted here as in Melbourne: viz - Junior Greek - 10.15 to 11.15. Mon: Wed: Friday: with a view to the Inst: Exam Junior Latin - 11.15 to 12.15. Tues: Thurs: with a view to the Inst: Ex: Senior Greek - 1.15 to 2.15. Mon: Wed: Friday. with a view to the Melbourne Mat: Exam Senior Latin - 1.15 to 2.15 Tues: Thurs: If, as a preliminary arrangement, until the University be Incorporated, it be thought that students would not be found able or willing to attend Lectures during the day, I would propose to hold these Classes in the Evening. I would mention that the advice of the Professors given to me in Melbourne was not to have a Matriculation Examination for the first year, but to admit all Students willing to enrol themselves for attendance on the Lectures. In carrying out these suggestions, or any modifications of them, it will be my desire to meet the wishes, and carry with effect the visions of the Council. I have the honor to be, Sir, yours respectfully and faithfully, Henry Read. [Letter] Forwarding Information regarding Mr. Hughes Deed

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] Mitcham Parsonage June 3 1873 George Young Esqre. Secy. To Ad: University Dear Sir, Since preparing suggestions for the opening of Classes, at the request of the Council, I have received by last mail (yesterday) a private communication from Mr. Hughes, of which I have thought it my duty through you to inform the Council, since it may possibly affect their course of action in the establishment of Classes, until they hear directly from Mr. Hughes. His words to me are: "If the University Association are not satisfied with what I have done, they can instruct Mr. Hay to give back the Deed, or rather to cancel the Deed signed by him and me. I never would have given £20,000, if I had thought there was any doubt about raising three or four times this amount, and the fact is, if subscriptions are not coming in, the sooner it comes [Page 3] to an end, the better". This is only written in a private letter to me, but I felt that I ought to let the Council know what had been written by Mr. Hughes; at the same time, I am prepared to discharge my duties in connection with the classes. I am, my dear Sir, faithfully yours Henry Read M.A. This item contains references to: Council, University of Adelaide; establishment, University of Adelaide; finance; University Association; benefactors; bequests, gifts & endowments; course delivery

[Copy] Letter Discussing Options for Classes

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] My dear Mr. Reid /Read The Committee are disposed in the main to adopt your suggestions in reference to classes - But they are inclined to think that anything like encouraging attendance on day classes for this first broken session is scarcely to be hoped for and that it might therefore be prudent to arrange now for evening classes only - and in view of that it occurred to them that you might find it more convenient to the students to take the two Senior classes in each branch Greek and Latin in the same evening, and the two junior ones another evening - But in these points they would be guided by your expectations in reference to attendance which they presume would be based on that of the Union College Class of last year. The Committee are now looking for suitable rooms. Would you kindly give me an idea of what extent of accommodation you think it would be needful to provide Yours very truly Geo. Young This item contains references to: curriculum development; Council, University of Adelaide; Union College; course delivery; establishment, University of Adelaide

[Letter] Organisation of Classes
Author - Reverend Henry Read, M.A. Addressee - George Young, Honorary Secretary of the University Association

|
TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] Geo. Young Esqe. Hon: Secy: Ad: Univ: Mitcham Parsonage, June 9. 1873. My dear Sir, With respect to accommodation likely to be required for Classes, I believe that some of the Classes held last year numbered as much as forty: my own Pupils in Latin never exceeded twelve: for the study of the Classics. I do not think a large number can be expected. The arrangement proposed by the Committee to have the two Junior and the two Senior Classes together. i.e. on the same Evenings will be undoubtedly most convenient: and if this plan be adopted I would suggest for their consideration the following idea. It is possible that some few students - perhaps very few, but still, one or two - who have time at their own disposal may object to night classes, as a departure from all appearances of University system: another, and probably a larger class of young men may wish for night classes only, as all they have time for, and can attend. I would propose to repeat the Lectures; to have on one forenoon the Senior Latin and Greek, one set of young men, and on an evening to repeat the same for another set: and [Page 2] similarly with the Junior Latin and Greek. It is possible that in the future, if the University be established, a Certificate to the effect that a Term's Day Lectures have been attended, may serve as a Term kept. I believe that in Melbourne they began with extremely small numbers; but, I think, that from the beginning, however small the numbers my be, everything should be as formal, and as much in order as possible. I merely offer my suggestion to the Committee, whose wishes I shall desire in every respect to carry out. I am, my dear Sir, faithfully yours, Henry Read, M.A. This item contains references to: academic matters; committees; establishment, University of Adelaide; universities, other; accreditation

[Letter with Reply] Concern with Timing of Classical Teaching Classes

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 23 Augt. 1873 G. H. Farr 3 Sept [Page 2] 23rd Aug 1873 Dear Mr. Young The Evening given by Mr. Read to Classical Teaching in connection with our association - is the same as has been long given by Mr. Field at the Institute ____. Hence those wishing to attend both classes cannot do so. I am aware of one instance in which this hinders a young man from joining the [Page 3] Latin Class - Can it not be altered. Believe me very truly yours Geo. H. Farr [Page 4] Adelaide 3 Sept. Dear Mr. Farr I did not reply to your note of 23 August until there had been opportunity for discussing its content fully with Mr. Read & also with Mr. Davidson. The hours for holding their classes were not fixed until after a meeting with the young men for the purpose of ascertaining what days and hours would be most convenient to the greater number of those who attended. Every day or hour named was found to be attended with more or less inconvenience to some and the ultimate choice was practically that of the young men themselves. The subject has been reconsidered with the desire to avoid anything that would clash in the least degree with the Institute Classes, and I may say that it will continue to receive consideration, but I fear that during the current course it will scarcely be possible to make any change of arrangements. I am Yours very truly G. Y. This item contains references to: academic matters; course delivery;

[Letter] Regret over Mr. Hughes not Modifying the Conditions of his Gift

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 10 October 1873 The Lord Bishop [Page 2] Bishops Court Oct 10/73 My dear Sir Having been absent in the Country on Monday Oct 6 I write l line to express my regret that Mr. Hughes has not thought fit to modify the conditions annexed to his donation. I think the Council decided rightly to retain the gift in spite of those conditions. It now remains, as it appears to me for the Government to frame a Bill for Incorporating the University. Until this is done and a Council of Management appointed, the relations of the Higher Professors to the Association are precarious, and few will be inclined to contribute to an Institution of which they know neither the organization nor Rules. [Letter, Transcription and Rough Notes] "Notes for Consideration on Points Desirable to be Laid Before Mr. W.W. Hughes"
Author - Albert James Hannan, Q.C. Addressee - Francis Sutherland Hambly B.Ec., Personal Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor

ABSTRACT This 1962 document includes a transcription which appears to provide points for discussion on contentious issues relating to Walter Watson Hughes' endowment and the conditions upon which it was to be used. There are also rough notes relating to the endowment which appear to have been made at this later time, but the reason for this research is not clear. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 20th Sept. 1962 Dear Mr. Hambly Herewith I enclose copy of "Notes for consideration on points desirable to be laid before Mr. W.W.Hughes". Sincerely Yours A.J.H. Mr. F.S. Hambly Esq. B.Ec. P.S. I have a draft letter which was proposed to send to Mr. Hughes, but parts of it are crossed out. The letter I want was dated the 31st May, 1873, & I think it likely that there is a copy among the Union College papers. A.J.H.
